A

From the health point of view we are living in a marvelous age. We are immunized from birth against many of the most dangerous diseases. A large number of once fatal illnesses can now be cured by modern drugs and surgery. It is almost certain that one day remedies will be found for the most stubborn remaining diseases. The expectation of life has increased enormously. But though the possibility of living a long and happy life is greater than ever before, every day we witness the incredible slaughter of men, women and children on the roads. Man versus the motor car! It is a never-

ending battle which man is losing. Thousands of people over the world are killed or horribly killed each year and we are quietly sitting back and letting it happen.

It has been rightly said that when a man is sitting behind a steering wheel, his car becomes the extension of his personality. There is no doubt that the motor car often brings out a man's very worst qualities. People who are normally quiet and pleasant may become unrecognizable when they are behind a steering-wheel. They swear, they are ill-mannered and aggressive, willful as two-year-old and utterly selfish. Ai1 their hidden frustrations, disappointments and jealousies seem to be brought to the surface by the act of driving.

The surprising thing is that society smiles so benignly on the motorist and seems to condone his behaviour. Everything is done for his convenience. Cities are allowed to become almost uninhabitable because of heavy traffic; towns are made ugly by huge car parks; the countryside is desecrated by road networks; and the mass annual slaughter becomes nothing more than a statistic, to be conveniently forgotten.

It is high time a world code were created to reduce this senseless waste of human life. With regard to driving, the laws of some countries are notoriously lax and even the strictest are not strict enough. A code which was universally accepted could only have a dramatically beneficial effect on the accident rate. Here are a few examples of some of the things that might be done. The driving test should be standardized and made far more difficult than it is; all the drivers should be made to take a test every three years or so; the age at which young people are allowed to drive any vehicle should be raised to at least 21; all vehicles should be put through

stringent annual tests for safety. Even the smallest amount of alcohol in the blood can impair a person's driving ability. Present drinking and driving laws (where they exist) should be mad much stricter. Maximum and minimum speed limits should be imposed on all roads. Governments should lay down safety specifications for manufacturers, as has been done in the USA. All advertising stressing power and performance should be banned. These measures may sound inordinately harsh. But surely nothing should be considered as severe if it results in reducing the annual toll of human life. After all, the world is for human beings, not motor cars.

Ranch. It was near Los Angeles in California. A few years later Hollywood was one of the famous places in the world. At the beginning of the 20th century there was a big farm called Hollywood. From the 1910's to the 1950's, Hollywood was the film center of the world.

of the sun every year. As they made all the films by sunlight, the west coast was a much better place to work. Also near Hollywood you can find mountains and sea and desert. They did not have to travel

The law says that women should have the chance of doing the same jobs as men and earn the same as them.

The reality is very different. Women lose because, 25 years after the Equal Pay Act, many of them still get paid less than men.

They lose because they do lower-paid jobs which men just won't consider. And they lose because they are the ones who interrupt a career to have children.

All this is reported in an independent study ordered by the Government's Women's Unite.

The biggest problem isn't equal pay in workplaces such as factories. It is a sort of work women do.

Make a list of the low-paid jobs, then consider who does them.

Try nurses, secretaries, cleaners, clerks, teachers in primary schools, dinner ladies, and child care helpers. Not a lot of men among that group, are there?

Yet some of those jobs are really important. Surely no one would deny that about nurses and teachers, for a start.

So why do we reward the people who do them so poorly? There can be only one answer —— because they are women.

This is not going to be put right overnight. But the Government which employs a lot of them, and other bosses have to make a start.

It is disgraceful (可耻的) that we have gone into the 21st Century but still treat women as second-class citizens.

71. Women should have the chance of doing the same jobs and be paid equally as men ______.

A. after 25 years

B. according to the law

C. as a result of the Equal Pay Act

D. because women are as strong as men

A. that women interrupt a career to have children

B. what sort of work women do

A. Women should get equal pay for equal work to that of men.

B. Women should strengthen (加强) themselves.

C. The Government ought to protect women against getting paid less than men.

D. Some of the jobs that women do are of great importance.

74. When the writer says, "This is not going to be put right overnight", he means ______.

A. we must solve the problem very quickly

B. there is no completely fair thing all over the world

C. we need a long time to change the unfair reality

D. the problem that women lose will be solved soon

75. Which do you think would be the best title for this passage?

A. Work to give women a fair pay deal

B. Time to change the situation

C. Equal work, equal pay

D. Should women be treated as second-class citizens

D

Advertisers tend to think big and perhaps this is why they're always coming in for criticism. Their critics seem to resent them because they have a flair for self-promotion and because they have so much money to throw around. "It's iniquitous," they say, "that this entirely unproductive industry (if we can call it that) should absorb millions of pounds each year. It only goes to show how much profit the big companies are making. Why don't they stop advertising and reduce the price of their goods? After all, it's the consumer who pays... "

The poor old consumer! He'd have to pay a great deal more if advertising didn't create mass markets for products. It is precisely because of the heavy advertising that consumer goods are so cheap. But we get the wrong idea if we think the only purpose of advertising is to sell goods. Another equally important function is to inform. A great deal of the knowledge we have about household goods derives largely from the advertisements we read. Advertisements introduce us

to new products or remind us of the existence of the ones we already know about. Supposing you wanted to buy a washing machine, it is more than likely you would obtain details regarding performance, price, etc, from an advertisement.

Lots of people pretend that they never read advertisements, but this claim may be seriously doubted. It is hardly possible not to

read advertisements these days. And what fun they often are, too!

Just think what a railway station or a newspaper would be like

without advertisements. Would you enjoy gazing at a blank wall or reading railway by laws while waiting for a train? Would you like to read only closely printed columns of news in your daily paper? A cheerful, witty advertisement makes such a difference to a drab wall

or a newspaper full of the daily ration of calamities.

We must not forget, either, that advertising makes a positive contribution to our pockets. Newspapers, commercial radio and television companies could not subsist without this source of revenue. The fact that we pay so little for our daily paper, or can enjoy so many broadcast programs is due entirely to the money spent by advertisers. Just think what a newspaper would cost if we had to pay its full price!

Another thing we mustn't forget is the "small ads. " which are in virtually every newspaper and magazine. What a tremendously useful service they perform for the community! Just about anything can be accomplished through these columns. For instance, you can find a job, buy or sell a house, announce a birth, marriage or death in what used to be called the "hatch, match and dispatch" column but by far the most fascinating section is the personal or "agony" column. No other item in a newspaper provides such entertaining reading or offers such a deep insight into human nature. It's the best advertisement for advertising there is!

The establishment of the Third Reich influenced events in American history by starting a chain of events which culminated in

war between Germany and the United States. The complete destruction

of democracy, the persecution of Jews, the war on religion, the

cruelty and barbarism of the Nazis, and especially the plans of Germany and her allies, Italy and Japan, for world conquest caused great indignation in this country and brought on fear of another

world war. While speaking out against Hitler's atrocities, the American people generally favored isolationist policies and

neutrality. The Neutrality Acts of 1935 and 1936 prohibited trade

with any belligerents or loans to them. In 1937, the President was empowered to declare an arms embargo in wars between nations at his discretion.

American opinion began to change somewhat after President Roosevelt's "quarantine the aggressor" speech at Chicago (1937) in which he severely criticized Hitler's policies. Germany's seizure of Austria and the Munich Pact for the partition of Czechoslovakia (1938) also aroused the American people. The conquest of Czechoslovakia in March, 1939, was another rude awakening to the menace of the Third Reich. In August,1939, came the shock of the Nazi-Soviet Pact and in September the attack on Poland and the outbreak of European war. The United States attempted to maintain neutrality in spite of sympathy

for the democracies arrayed against the Third Reich. The Neutrality Act of 1939 repealed the arms embargo and permitted "cash and carry" exports of arms to belligerent nations. A strong national defense program was begun. A draft act was passed (1940) to strengthen the military services. A Lend Act (1941) authorized the President to sell, exchange, or lend materials to any country deemed necessary by him

for the defense of the United States. Help was given to Britain by exchanging certain overage destroyers for the right to establish American bases in British territory in the Western Hemisphere. In August, 1940, President Roosevelt and Prime Minister Churchill met

and issued the Atlantic Charter, which proclaimed the kind of a world which should be established after the war. In December, 1941, Japan

launched the unprovoked attack on the United States at Pearl Harbor. Immediately thereafter, Germany declared war on the United States.

When I opened the first "Body Shop" in 1976, what I wanted to do was to earn (挣) enough money to feed my children. Today the "Body Shop" is a great company growing fast all around the world. In the years since we began, I have learned a lot. Much of what I have learned will be found in this book, because I believe that we, as a company, have something worth saying about how to run a successful business without giving up what you really believe in.

It's not an ordinary business book. It is not just about my life, either. The message is that to succeed in business you have to be different. Business can be fun, and can be run with love and do good. In business, as in life, I need to enjoy myself, to have a feeling of my family and to feel excited by something unusual. I have always wanted the people who work for the "Body Shop" to feel the same way.

Now this book sends these ideas out into the world, and makes

them public. I'd like to think there are no limits (界限) to our "family", and no limits to what can be done. I find that an exciting thought. I hope you do, too.

President Arling has put his long-awaited economic restructuring program before the Congress. It provides a coordinated program of investment credits, research grants, educational reforms, and tax changes designed to make American industry more competitive. This is necessary to reverse the economic slide into unemployment, lack of growth, and trade deficits that have plagued the economy for the past six years.

The most liberal wing of the President's party has called for stronger and more direct action. They want an incomes policy to check inflation while Federal financing helps rebuild industry behind a

wall of protective tariffs.

The Republicans, however, decry even the modest, graduated tax increases in the President's program. They Want tax cuts and a more

open market. They say if Federal money has to be injected into the economy, let it through defence spending.

Both these alternatives ignore the unique nature of the economic problem before us. It is not simply a matter of markets or financing. The new technology allows vastly increased production for those able to master it. But it also threatens those who fail to adopt it with permanent second-class citizenship in the world economy. If an industry cannot lever itself up to the leading stage of technological advances, then it will not be able to compete effectively. I fit cannot do this, no amount of government protectionism or access to foreign markets can keep it profitable for long. Without the profits and experience of technological excellence to reinvest, that industry can only fall still further behind its foreign competitors.

So the crux is the technology and that is where the President's program focused. The danger is not that a plan will not be passed, it is that the ideologues of right and left will distort the bill with amendments that will blur its focus on technology. The economic restructuring plan should be passed intact. If we fail to restructure our economy now, we may not get a second chance.

C. technology

D. tax

92. What is the requirement of the most liberal wing of the Democratic Party?

The Norwegian Government is doing its best to keep the oil industry under control. A new law limits exploration to an area south of the southern end of the long coastline; production limits have

been laid down (though these have already been raised) ; and oil companies have not been allowed to employ more than a limited number

of foreign workers. But the oil industry has a way of getting over such problems, and few people believe that the Government will be

able to hold things back for long. As a Norwegian politician said

last week: "We will soon be changed beyond all recognition. "

Ever since the war, the Government has been carrying out a programme of development in the area north of the Arctic Circle. During the past few years this programme has had a great deal of success: Tromso has been built up into a local capital with a university, a large hospital and a healthy industry. But the oil industry has already started to draw people from the south, and

within a few years the whole northern policy could be in ruins.

The effects of the oil industry would not be limited to the north, however. With nearly 100 percent employment, everyone can see a situation developing in which the service industries and the tourist industry will lose more of their workers to the oil industry. Some smaller industries might even disappear altogether when it becomes cheaper to buy goods from abroad.

The real argument over oil is its threat to the Norwegian way of life. Farmers and fishermen do not make up most of the population,

but they are an important part of it, because the Norwegians see in them many of the qualities that they regard with pride as essentially Norwegian. And it is the farmers and the fishermen who are most

critical of the oil industry because of the damage that it might

cause to the countryside and to the sea.

96. The Norwegian Government would prefer the oil industry to

______.

A. provide more jobs for foreign workers

B. slow down the rate of its development

C. sell the oil it is producing abroad

D. develop more quickly than at present

97. The Norwegian Government has tried to ______.

A. encourage the oil companies to discover new oil sources

B. prevent oil companies employing people from northern Norway

C. help the oil companies solve many of their problems

D. keep the oil industry to something near its present size

98. According to the passage, the oil industry might lead

northern Norway to ______.

A. the development of industry

B. a growth in population

C. the failure of the development programme

D. the development of new towns

99. In the south, one effect to the development of the oil industry might be ______.

A. a large reduction on unemployment

B. a growth in the tourist industry

C. a reduction in the number of existing industries

D. the development of a number of service industries

100. Norwegian farmers and fishermen have an important influence because ______.

A. they form such a large part of the Norwegian ideal

B. their lives and values represent the Norwegian ideal

C. their work is so useful to the rest of Norwegian society

PART I: INCOMPLETE SENTENCES

1.A [解析] be subject to表示“接受,经受”;test有“检验,化验”的意思;tariff表示“关税,价目表”;souvenir表示“纪念品”;shipment表示“船运,货物”。

8.C [解析] “______ to use crutches for six months”作句子的主语,所以应该用动名词短语作主语。

9.D[解析] “an hour and a half”表示“一个半小时”。

so well as

13.C[解析] rise up表示“上升”;hold on表示“继续,坚持”;pick up表示“拾起,抬起”;take on表示“呈现,承担”。

make for sb. to (one's own) measure按(某人的)尺寸为其定做。

根据主句可知从句中的动词和从句中的主语是被动关系,且从句动词应该用一般过去时,因此从句是“the little girl was left in the darkroom”的省略形式,省略掉主语和be,则从句是“left alone in the dark room,”故

A great deal of,B应为A lot of或Lots of,C

22.B[解析] turn on打开;turn up调大(音量);turn down调小(音量);turn off关掉。

turn on不能跟a bit搭配,故正确答案为B。

Tom's mother always told him not to smoke again。

25.A[解析] 听说别人要去旅行,应该对其说“Have a nice time!”

27.D[解析] It's a deal意为“就这么办”,“一言为定”。

28.C [解析] I have to go是定语从句,先行词是the reason,因此引导词用why,表示原因,排除D项。my mother is ill in bed是表语从句,说明主语the reason是什么,表示一个事实而不是原因。

30.C[解析] 句首为否定或半否定的词语,如never,hardly,seldom,scarcely,little,at no time,not only,not once等,句子采用部分倒装的形式,即将谓语的一部分如助动词或情态动词倒装至主语之前。

36.C[解析] pay off还清(债务等);pay back偿还(借款),报答,报复;pay for偿还;pay down用现金支付。

more…than…

PART Ⅱ: ERROR RECOGNITION

42.B[解析] much→去。

43.B [解析] over→through。

45.D[解析] to→with。keep in touch with是固定词组,意思是“和……

47.D [解析] against→for。

48.D [解析] among→between。between…and…

49.B [解析] doing→to do。

would/had rather do sth. than do sth.

52.B[解析] stands→stand。

53.D [解析] their→his/her。

54.C [解析] and→but。

55.D[解析] call out→to call out。tell sb. to do sth.

56.D[解析] tiring→tired。

whom you want to see是定语从句,先行词是somebody,see的对象是whom,him多余。

59.B [解析] as→for。be famous for是固定搭配,表示“因……

60.D [解析] to→for。be useful for是固定搭配,表示“对……

PART Ⅲ: READING COMPRE HENSION

61.D[解析] 通过最后一段中的“With regard to driving, the laws of some countries are notoriously lax and even the strictest are not strict enough…These measures may sound inordinately h arsh. But surely nothing should be considered as severe if it results in

reducing the annual toll of human life.

62.D[解析] 由第三段中的“The surprising thing is that society smiles SO benignly on the motorist and seems to condone his behaviour. Everything is done for his convenience…” A、B、C

63.A[解析] 通过第二段中的“…his car becomes the extension of

his personality. There is no doubt that the motor car often brings

out a man's very worst quali ties…All their hidden frustrations, disappointments and jealousies seem to be brought to the surface by the act of driving.”

64.A [解析] 通过最后一段中的“The driving test should be standardized and made far more difficult than it is; all the drivers should be made to take a test every three years or so; the age at which young people are allowed to drive any vehicle should be raised

to at least 21…”

69.C[解析] 从第三段“The reason why people went to Hollywood to make films was the sun.

70.A[解析] 根据第四段“As they made all the films by sunlight, the west coast was a much better place to work.

71.B[解析] 根据the Equal Pay Act应该做到男女平等,而并不是因为the Equal Pay Act的结果。

72.B[解析] 根据第五段“The biggest problem isn't equal pay in workplaces such as factories. It is a sort of work women do.

A Tale of Scottish Rural Life Lewis Grassic Gibbon’s Sunset Song (1932) was voted “the best Scottish novel of all time”by Scottish’s reading public in 20051 Once considered shocking for its frank description of aspects of the lives of Scotland’s poor rural farmers,it has been adapted for stage, film,TV and radio in recent decades. The novel is set on the fictional estate of Kinraddie,in the farming country of the Scottish northwest in the years up to and beyond World War I.At its heart is the story of Chris, who is both part of the community and a little outside it. Grassic Gibbon gives us the most detailed and intimate account of the life of his heroine. We watch her grow through a childhood dominated by her cruel but hard-working father;experience tragedy (her mother’s suicide and murder of her twin children);and learn about her feelings as she grows into woman. We see her marry, lose her husband, then marry again.Chris has seemed so convincing a figure to some female readers that they cannot believe that she is the creation of a man2. But it would be misleading to suggest that this book is just about Chris. It is truly a novel of a place and its people. Its opening section t ells of Kinraddie’s long history,in a language that imitates the place’s changing patterns of speech and writing. The story itself is amazingly full of characters and incidents. It is told from Chris’ point of view but also from that of the gossiping com munity,a community where everybody knows everybody else’s business and nothing is ever forgotten. Sunset Song has a social theme too.It is concerned with what Grassic Gibbon perceives as the destruction of traditional Scottish rural life first by modernization and then by World War 1.Gibbon tried hard to show how certain characters resist the war.Despite this, the war takes the young men away,a number of them to their deaths. In particular,it takes away Chris’ husband,Ewan T avendale. The war finally kills Ewan, but not in the way his widow is told.In fact, the Germans aren’t responsible for his death, but his own side.He is shot because he is said to have run away from a battle. If the novel is about the end of one way of life it also looks ahead. It is a “Sun set

The three most popular reforms have been recruiting more outside directors in order to make boards more independent." 其中to feather their own nests意为"构筑自己的窝";at the expense of their shareholders意为"以股东的利益为代价"。 2.【答案】A。解析:A 细节推论题文章第二段最后一句"the consequences have differed from those intended"表明改革的结果是事与愿违,这是一个总的结论。 选项A(公司高层应拿高薪)文章未提及; 选项B(公司高层的收入与公司增长的利润成比例)也未提及; 选项D(公司高层的表现比那些股东更会影响其自身利益)文章同样未提及; 选项C(公司高层倾向于利用其地位肥己)与文章第五段最后一句所述之意相符。 5.【答案】A。 文中第二段提及“These included the use of federal student loans to pay off credit cards, effectively shifting the debt, appeals to parents for loans, cutting back on course work to increase time at paid jobs,or even dropping out altogether to work full time.”,因此,正确答案为C 项。 文中开篇提到“the consequences can be serious-ranging from higher drop- out rates to future employment probl ems and even suicide”,最后一段谈到“Card issuers were sponsoring school programs, funding activities and even entering into business partnerships with schools”,由此可以看出选项B是card issuers从事的活动,而不是美国学生,更不是使用credit card的后果。 3.【答案】A。 4.【答案】A。 本文首句即提到“U.S.college students are increasingly burdened with credit card debt”,第二段主旨是“growing numbers of students who are unable to cope with the stress of their debts and/or part time jobs for servicing their credit cards”。第三段讲“debts can haunt students”,最后一段主要讲述“who should answer for the negative consequences”。 Passage 3 1.【答案】A。 由第一段第一句“In the first year or so of Web business, most of the action has revolved around efforts to tap the consumer market.”
