These two students were 45 something called test anxiety. When a student 46 , his or her mind does not work as well as it usually does. The student can’t write or think 47 because of the extreme nervousness. Although poor grades are often a result of poor study habits, sometimes they are caused by test anxiety. Recently, test anxiety had been recognized as a real 48 , not just an excuse by lazy students.

Special university counseling courses try to help students. In these courses, counselors teach students how to 49 test anxiety. At some universities, students take tests to 50 their anxiety. If the tests show their anxiety is high, the students can take short courses to help them deal with their tension. These courses teach students how to 51 their bodies. Students are trained to be 52 in very tense

situations. By controlling their nervousness, they can let their 53 work at ease. Learned information then 54 without difficulty.

四、阅读理解(共15小题,每题2分,共30分)

A

Sarah came running in saying, “Look what I found.” Over the top of the paper I was reading I saw a long object that made me jump. It was a piece of snakeskin that had been shed (脱皮) by one of our garden snakes.

“Isn’t it beautiful?” said my wide-eyed 7-year-old daughter.

I stared at the organic wrapper and thought to myself that it really was not that beautiful, but I did not want to disappoint Sarah. Everything children see for the first time is important to their sense of beauty and creativity. They see only merit (优点) and excellence in the world.

“Why does it do this?” Sarah asked.

I like to teach my children that there is something else going on besides what they see in front of them. “Snakes shed their skin because they need to renew themselves,” I explained.

“Why do they need to renew themselves?” Sarah asked.

“We often need to shed our skins, those coatings that we cover ourselves with,”

I said to my now absorbed daughter. “We outgrow some things and find other stuff unnecessary. This snake no longer needs this skin. It is probably too old, and the snake probably doesn’t think it looks as smart in the skin as it once did. It is

l ike buying a new suit.”

Of course, I’m sure this explanation will not sit well with naturalists. But Sarah was getting the point. As we talked, I knew that she began to understand, that renewal is part of progress; that we need to take a good look at ourselves, and our rooms and schoolwork and creativity, and see what we need to keep and what we need to cast off (丢弃). I was careful to point out that this is a natural process, not one to be forced.

“Snakes don’t peel off their skin when they feel like it,” I explained. “It happens as part of their growth.”

“I see, Dad,” said Sarah. She then jumped off my lap, grabbed the snakeskin, and ran off.

I hoped she would remember this. Often, in order to find our real selves underneath the layers of community and culture we are cloaked (掩饰) in year after year, we need to start examining these layers. We need to gently peel some away, as we recognize them to be worthless or unnecessary; or at best, remember the things we threw away to teach us how we can improve.

56. When Sarah asked the author whether the snakeskin was beautiful, ______.

A. he was shocked and jumped

B. he tried to understand her point of view

C. he decided that telling the truth was a merit

D. he decided to teach her something about nature

57. Which of the following would the writer agree with?

A. By reflecting on ourselves, we can better ourselves.

B. It is necessary to force others to get rid of certain things.

C. The community and culture we live in force us to change.

D. When you don’t like some clothes, it is natural to cast them off.

58. How did Sarah feel about the author’s explanation?

A. Confused.

B. Satisfied.

C. Relieved.

D. Bored.

59. Which of the following could be the best title for the article?

A. Renewal for snakes and us

B. A natural part of our growth

C. The things we should cast off

D. A shed snakeskin in Sarah’s eyes

B

You are walking along a lane (小巷) and never know what you will find. It might be a shop selling velvet ribbons or oil paintings, or a place where you can buy Dutch cheese. One thing is for sure – you will end up by a canal (运河).

Welcome to Amsterdam, the capital of the Netherlands.

The year 2013 will be a good time to explore Amsterdam as the city has a lot to celebrate: The famous canal ring will turn 400 years old. Amsterdam will also celebrate the 160th birthday of Dutch painter Vincent van Gogh and 40 years of the Van Gogh museum –home to the biggest collection of the artist’s colorful works.

The famous canal ring is a trademark (标志) of the city. With more than 100 kilometers of canals, it is no wonder that Amsterdam is called the “Venice of the

north”. But unlike the Italian town, where boats were originally used for transport, the canals in Amsterdam were mainly used as moats (护城河) for defense in the 17th century. Today, ferries on canals offer a different way to explore the city.

But to truly experience Amsterdam, you can’t miss the city’s historic museums and monuments.

There are over 50 museums in Amsterdam and the Van Gogh museum is the most famous one. It holds 200 paintings, 700 letters and 500 drawings by the artist. Van Gogh didn’t grow up in Amsterdam but he spent some time studying theology (神学) there when he was young.

Another famous museum is Anne Frank’s house. Anne Fr ank became famous around the world because of a diary she left explaining her and her family’s experience as a Jewish girl during World War II, hiding out in a house hoping that she would not be captured (抓捕) by German Nazis.

“Amsterdam is small enough to walk or cycle almost anywhere,” Rodney Bolt of The Telegraph describes the city. “Yet it is rarely dull. Best of all it combines its glorious past and lively today.

60. Which of the following is TRUE of the canals in Amsterdam?

D. They are the main theme of Van Gogh’s paintings.

61. In the article, Amsterdam is described as a city that _____.

A. is completely built on water

B. is famous for its modernization

C. has altogether 42 historic museums and monuments

D. can be explored by foot

62. We can infer from the article that ______.

A. people get lost easily in Amsterdam

B. Van Gogh spent most part of his life in Amsterdam

C. some Jewish people in Amsterdam were caught by the Germans in World War II

D. taking a ferry ride is the most popular tourist activity in Amsterdam

63. What is the main purpose of the article?

A. To inform about important Dutch anniversaries next year.

B. To introduce the trademark of Amsterdam.

C. To comment on popular museums in Amsterdam.

D. To recommend Amsterdam as a tourist destination.

You watch a sad film and get caught up in your emotions. You cry your eyes out at the dramatic plot – you feel sad for the characters if they suffer, or happy for them when they are successful. It is only when the movie is over that you realize that what you were watching is not real.

But why couldn’t you accept that when you were so absorbed in the movie? It was reported in Science Daily this week that scientists at Case Western Reserve University, US, discovered that people simply cannot think emotionally and logically

at the same time.

It has long been known that something different goes on in our brain when we use logic, rather than responding to something emotionally. Thinking logically is a step-by-step process, in which people make decisions through reasoning and find answers rationally (理性地). When we think emotionally, or empathize (移情,有同感), we look at things from someone else’s point of view and try to feel their pain.

Now scientists have found that thinking logically and emotionally are like the two ends of a seesaw (跷跷板) –when we’re b usy empathizing, the part of the brain used for cold, hard analysis is suppressed. And it’s also true the other way round.

To come to this conclusion, scientists gathered 45 people – men and women –to take brain scans as they solved different kinds of puzzles. Some of the puzzles were tough and involved math and physics and others were social problems that required participants to put themselves in other people’s shoes.

Scientists found that when participants were doing a math problem, the region (区域) in their brain that is associated with logical thinking lit up, and when asked to make emotional decisions, the region for emotional thinking lit up. But the most interesting part is that when asked to solve problems that required both logical and emotional responses, the participants always used one of the regions at a time while the other one went dark.

“Empathetic and analytic thinking are mutually (相互之间地) exclusive (排斥的) in the brain,” said Anthony Jack, leader of the study. “You don’t have to favo r one, but cycle efficiently between them, and employ the right network at the right time.”

However, people sometimes ended up using the wrong one. This explains why some people are good at solving complex math problems but have poor social skills. And why even the smartest people get taken in by fake (假的) but touching stories. 64. Scientists at Case Western Reserve University, US proved ______ through their recent tests.

A. logical thinking works differently from emotional thinking

B. logical thinking is much more efficient than emotional thinking

C. logical thinking and emotional thinking take turns to function independently

D. logical thinking and emotional thinking could work together

65. The underlined word “suppressed” in Paragraph 4 means ______.

A. to start to react actively

B. to be completely damaged

C. to prevent something from working effectively

D. to continue working independently

66. We can conclude from the last two paragraphs that ______.

A. people have to frequently switch between different types of thinking

B. adopting(采用)the wrong thinking pattern could have bad results

C. people could only either have excellent logical thinking or emotional thinking

D. people who think logically could easily be fooled

D

Oxford or Cambridge – which one is better? This is a tough question, as the

two are the most famous universities in the UK. But if you ask who’s the king of water, there might be an answer.

On March 31, 250,000 spectators (观众) lined the banks of the River Thames in London to watch the 159th University Boat Race. Millions more turned on their TVs to follow the annual event, which saw two eight-man crews from Oxford and Cambridge universities go head to head in a 6.8 km rowing race. This year, Oxford took the victory in an exciting battle of willpower and endurance (耐力).

The race is a tradition that started in 1829. A win brings great fame to the students’ university. But behind all the honor is a lot of hard work.

According to the event’s regulations, team members must be students at the university they are rowing for. They are admitted by the university on the basis of their academic performance rather than their rowing skills and are subject to the same requirements as all other students.

Recruitment (招募) into the university’s rowing team, however, is based entirely on the students’ athleti cism. They take physical tests to assess (评估) their fitness, and medical checks are carried out to analyze their bodies’ suitability to perform under such demanding conditions. Only eight students are selected for the race by each university.

In preparation for the race, rowers undergo an intensive (强化集中的) training program alongside their studies. They get up at 6 o’clock in the morning, row for two hours and then go to class. In the afternoon they do weight training before going home to finish their homework and sleep. This routine is followed every day for six months until the day of the race.

According to the Chicago Training Center, a US-based non-profit organization, rowing can help students achieve their academic potential: “The necessity to plan the d ay’s work and the commitment (义务) to the other members of the team helps students to succeed,” the organization’s website says.

67. Which of the following statements is TRUE of the rowing team members from Oxford and Cambridge universities?

A. They were admitted to the universities for their rowing skills.

B. They view it as a great honor to compete for their universities.

C. They get special training programs for their studies.

D. They have to complete intense rowing exercises and weight training every morning.

68. We can conclude from the article that ______.

A. Oxford has won most of the time since this tradition started

B. the sport of rowing doesn’t have a large fan base in the UK

C. rowing helps students better organize their life

D. the rowers have to spend less time on their studies to achieve victory for their team

69. What is the article mainly about?

A. What it takes to be on a rowing team at Oxford or Cambridge.

B. A history of the rowing battles between Oxford and Cambridge.

C. An introduction to the tradition of rowing races between Oxford and Cambridge.

D. Why the boat races between Oxford and Cambridge attract so many viewers.

六、书面表达

Persistence is the key to success, whether for a single person or an organization. The lack of it would mean failure in reaching a certain goal. Success always favors those who make good preparations and spare no effort to follow their dreams.

Take me for example. I was struggling with English in junior high school and frequently failed the exams. Instead of giving up and complaining, I was determined to go to great lengths to improve my English. I listened attentively in class, tried hard to read widely and learned the new words and phrases by heart. I seized every chance to practice using English. Day by day, I become confident to use English and the exam is now a piece of cake for me.

Success seldom comes easily on the first try. It takes persistence, which means working hard and constantly trying. So if something does go wrong, don’t let failures defeat you. Make necessary adjustments and try again. If you are persistent, you will definitely succeed.
