There are about fifteen hundred languages in the world. But

only a few of them are very important. English is one of these. Many, many people use it, not only in England and the U.S. A., but also in other parts of the world. About 200, 000,000 speak it as their own language. It is difficult to say how many people are learning it as a foreign language. Many millions are trying to do so.

Is it easy or difficult to learn English? Different people may have different answers. Have you ever noticed ads of this kind in the newspapers or magazines? “Learn English in six weeks, or your money back… ” “Easy and fun! Our records and tapes help you master your English in a month. From the first day your pronunciation will be excellent. Just send… ” Of course, it never happens quite like that.

The only language that seems easy to learn is the mother tongue. We should remember that we all learned our own language well when we were children. If we could learn English in the same way, it would not seem so difficult. Think of what a small child does. He listens to what people say. He tries what he hears. When he wants something, he has to ask for it. He is using the language, talking in it, thinking in it all the time. Just imagine how much practice that gets.

So it is hard to say that learning English is easy, because a good command of English depends upon a lot of practice. And practice needs great effort and takes much time. Good teachers, records,

tapes, books, and dictionaries will help. But they cannot do the student?s work for him.

1. Which of the following is not true about English?

A. About 2 million people in the world speak English.

B. People not only in England and the U.S.A. but also in other parts of the world use English.

C. It is difficult to say how many people in the world learn English as a foreign language.

D. English is one of the most important languages spoken in the world.

2. Why is learning English not easy?

A. Because it is difficult to say how many people are learning English.

B. Because ads in the newspapers or magazines do not offer the right records and tapes.

C. Because people do not practice enough in learning English.

D. Because it is too difficult for adults to learn English.

3. What advice does the writer give to English learners?

A. To attend the training class and master it in six weeks.

B. To look for a good teacher.

C. To spend a lot of time practicing it.

D. To buy many English books.

4. How does a child learn his own language?

A. He listens to what people say.

B. He tries what he hears.

C. When he wants something, he has to ask for it.

D. All of the above.

5. What is the main idea of the passage?

A. Learning English needs great effort and takes much time.

B. English is one of the most important languages in the world.

C. Good teachers, records, tapes, books, and dictionaries will help people learn English well.

D. Learning English is easy and fun.

If you have to miss one meal a day, which meal will cause you fewest health problem if you don?t eat it? If they have to make a decision of this type, most people, especially dieters or very busy people will choose to skip breakfast.

However, many experts in the field of health consider breakfast to be the most important meal of the day. If we eat a good breakfast, they say, we will have the energy and nutrients we need to begin our working day with vigor and hopefully with good humor. Nevertheless, many people skip breakfast or substitute a donut and a cup of coffee for a well-balanced meal. What happens if we ignore

the importance of breakfast?

One recent study conducted in the United States tested a large number of people. Participants included both males and females who ranged in age from 12 to 83. During the experiment, these people were given a variety of breakfasts, and sometimes, they had to skip breakfast completely. Special tests, including blood tests and endurance tests, were set up to analyze how well the participants? bodies functioned when they had eaten a certain kind of breakfast.

The results showed that if a person eats an adequate breakfast, he or she will work more efficiently and more productively. This fact appears to be especially true if a person?s work involves mental activity. The study showed that if schoolchildren eat fruit, eggs, bread, and milk before going to school, they will learn more quickly and will be able to concentrate on their lessons for a longer period of time than if their breakfast is inadequate.

The study also showed that, contrary to what many people believe, if you skip breakfast, you will not lose weight. This is because people become so hungry if they skip breakfast that they eat too much for lunch and end up gaining weight instead of losing. So remember, if you are on a diet, skipping breakfast will not help you. You will probably lose more weight if you reduce your other meals.

6. Many experts in the field of health think ________.

I found out one time that doing a favor for someone could get you into a lot of trouble.

One time when I was taking a final test, the girl next to me whispered somet hing, but I couldn?t understand. So I leaned over her way and found out that she was trying to ask me if I had an extra pen. She showed me that hers was out of ink and would not write. I happened to have an extra one, so I took it out of my pocket and put it on her desk.

Later, after we turned in all the test papers, the teacher asked me to stay in the room. As soon as we were alone she began to talk to me about what it meant to grow up; she mentioned how important it was to stand on your own feet and be responsible for my own acts. For a long time she talked about honesty and emphasized that when people do something dishonest, they are really cheating themselves. She made me promise that I wouldn?t think seriously about what she

said, and then she told me I could leave. I walked out of the room wondering why she chose to talk to me about all these things.

Later on, I found out that she thought I was cheating on the test.

I tried to explain about the pen, but what she said was that it seemed very strange to her that I didn?t mention anything about the pen the day she talked to me right after the test. To this day, I am sure she continues to believe that I had cheated on that test. Appearances can be deceiving and it is difficult to know how others will perceive our action.

B. She thought I was an honest person.

There was once a town in the heart of America. All life there seemed to live in peace with its surroundings. In spring, white clouds moved slowly above the green fields. In summer wheat waved in the wind, producing the song of a golden ocean. In autumn various fruits changed the color of the slopes. The foxes barked in the hills. The goats silently crossed the fields, half hidden in the fog of the autumn mornings.

Along the roads fresh wild flowers delighted the traveler?s eye

through much of the year. Even in winter the roadsides were places of beauty. Countless birds came to feed on the seed heads of the dried plants rising above the snow. The countryside was, in fact, famous for its rich and various kinds of bird life. When the flood of birds poured through in spring and autumn people traveled great distances to visit them. Others came to fish the streams, pools or ponds, which flowed clear and cold out of the hills.

Then a great misfortune crept over the town and everything began to change. Strange illnesses swept the chickens; the cattle grew sick and died. Everywhere was a shadow of death. In the hospital in the town, the doctors were troubled by the causes of the new kinds of illness appearing among their patients. There had been several sudden and unexplained deaths, not only among the grown-ups, but even among children.

There was a strange stillness. The birds — nobody knew where they had gone. The fruit trees — they were coming into flower but bore no fruits. The roadsides, once so beautiful, were lined with brown grass as though they had been swept by fire. Even the streams were now lifeless, for all the fish died.

This town does not actually exist, yet every one of these has actually happened somewhere, and many real towns or cities have already suffered a number of them. Great misfortunes have crept

over us without our notice, and this imagined town may easily become real.

During the 20th century there has been a great change in the lives of women. A woman marrying at the end of the 19th century would probably have been in her middle twenties, and would be likely to have seven or eight children, of whom four or five lived till they were five years old. By the time the youngest was fifteen, the mother would have been in her early fifties and would expect to live a further twenty years, during which chance and health made it unusual for her to get paid work. People in different countries have different standards for good manners. Before entering a house in some Asian countries it is necessary to take off one?s shoes. In European countries, even though shoes sometimes become very muddy, this is not done. A guest in a Chinese house never finishes a drink. He leaves a little to show that he has had enough. In a Malay(马来人) house, a guest always leaves a little food. In England, a guest always finishes a drink or eats up his food to show that he has enjoyed it.

Here are some examples of the things that a well-mannered

person does or does not do no matter whether he is an oriental(东方人) or a westerner.

He never laughs at people when they are in trouble. Instead, he tries to help them. He is always kind whether to people or to animals. When he is waiting for a bus, he takes his turn and never pushes to the front of the line. In the bus, he gives his seat to an old person or a disabled person, or a lady who is standing. When talking to people, he never tells heavy people they are fat, but says that they are losing weight for he knows everyone is diet conscious(注重日常饮食的) and wants to be thin. He never asks people, women in particular, their age. Everyone wants to be young. If he is invited to a dinner party at seven, he is sure to be there by seven, knowing how people respect time and expect everyone to be …on time?. If he smokes, he never lights his cigarette before getting the permission from people around him. He says …Please? when making a request and …Thank you? when he receives something. He stands up when speaking to a lady or an older person, and he does not sit down until the other person is seated.

26. What does a good-mannered Asian guest do when entering the house of his host?

三、英译汉

1. This story illustrates an important principle about managing time: No one can do it all. Each of us has to make choices and accept trade-offs. The problem is that many people choose in ways that put themselves and their health last. They take better care of their houses and cars than they do of themselves. They put everyone else?s needs ahead of their own. That?s fine if it?s occasional. It would even be okay if there was a balance. But most people living that way are wearing themselves out, feeling out of control. They stop exercising or start skipping meals; next they steal time from their sleep.(英语下册P17)

2.So what is the solution? In a word, prioritize. Decide what you want in your life, and put that first. On a daily basis, that should include regular meals, adequate sleep and time with your family. Exercise, leisure, friendships and hobbies should also be regular aspects of life. The point is to do something for yourself every day. The choice is yours: Whatever makes you feel good about yourself and your life. Take a nap. Take a walk. Take time to play the piano. Stop bringing your briefcase home from the office.(英语下册P17)那么,解决的办法是什么呢?

3.Successful language learning is active learning. Therefore, successful learners do not wait for a chance to use the language; they look for such a chance. They find people who speak the language and they ask these people to correct them when they make a mistake. They will try anything to communicate. They are not afraid to repeat what they hear or to say strange things; they are willing to make mistakes and try again. When communication is difficult, they can accept information that is inexact or incomplete. It is more important for them to learn to think in the language than to know the meaning
