Students from Oceanside High School in Rockland will be able to sleep in a little longer from this autumn.

Regional School Unit 13 Superintendent (负责人) Lew Collins said during the school's Thursday night meeting that the schedule for the schools will be changed. Oceanside East and West will start a half hour later, at 8 a.m. for their new school year.

Research has shown that teenagers' brains are often not fully awake at 6:30 a.m. Collins said the schedule, which is used to get students to school for classes that begin at 7:30 a.m., calls for some to get on buses before 6 a.m. to get to school on time. Teachers are having meetings at 6:40 a.m., which is too early, he thinks.

Collins visited the high schools in Rockland and asked students when they would like classes to begin. Most of them said 8:00 a.m. “I was surprised. I thought they would have said 9:00 or 10:00,”he said.

The National Sleep Foundation says on its website that teenagers' biological clocks are designed to stay up later and get up later. The Foundation called for schools to change their schedules, which means a later start as well for elementary students (小学生).

We do not have enough buses to run, since all the high school and elementary school buses run almost at the same time, Collins said. He suggested, “We should buy six more buses and get six more drivers to keep the new schedule working.”

Elementary school classes in Rockland now start at 8:30 a.m., but will be moved to 8:45 a.m., starting in the autumn. “I know this is a problem for working parents, but we will see what we can come up with,”said Jane Brown, a teacher at Bardonia Elementary School. “Anyway, I believe if students get more sleep they'll be more ready to learn when classes start,” she added.

In addition to showing support for their school, high school students with school spirit perform better academically, are more engaged in social matters, and are happier in general than their less-spirited schoolmates. These findings were part of an online survey of high school students, parents and principals. The new survey conducted by Harris Poll involved about 1,500 individuals who were asked about school pride, academics, selfrespect and community involvement. The research attempted to discover how school spirit is connected to the way high school students learn, lead and grow.

School spirit involves a student's pride in his or her school, a student's tendency to get other students to be active in school events, and a student's plans to return to his or her school for special events after graduation. A student who completed the survey stated that “school spirit means to support your school no matter what, knowing your school has helped you to reach your goals.”

From academic achievement to general happiness, the survey indicated a positive relationship to school spirit. Nearly all of the principals believe that higher levels of school spirit are tied to higher student achievement.

“When students feel a sense of school spirit, they tend to be more involved in the great opportunities which exist in their school,”noted one female principal who responded to the survey.

“If they have a lower level of such spirit, they are not involved in athletics or many of the activities. Additionally, they do not take personal responsibility for not doing well and tend to blame the school. Students who are achieving strongly tend to be involved in all aspects of high school. They participate in different events, activities and athletics on site.”

The survey indicated that during the 2016-2017 school year, high school students were involved in an average of eight afterclass activities; and among those individuals involved in activity programs, 51 percent said the reason they were involved was so that they could be involved in their school, and 34 percent said getting involved was a way to show their school spirit.

My New Teachers

A

If I asked you to name your favorite teachers from kindergarten through graduate school, it would be easy to answer, wouldn't it? It would also be an enjoyable question to answer because it would bring back so many good memories of wonderful people who've touched both your personal life and your professional life. Y ou would be thinking about people who not only taught you things of value, but inspired you as well. Quite possibly they inspired you to become a teacher.

My classmates and I were asked this question on my first day in the teaching credential (证书) program at the University of San Francisco many years ago. I thought of Sister Mary Anne, who taught me in elementary school. I thought of Mrs. Padgett and Mrs. Kofford, English teachers, in high school. I thought of Dr. Lincoln and Dr. Campbell, history professors, who taught me in college. Then came this question. “What do they all have in common?”asked Dr. McSweeney. I stood up and said, “They all love what they are doing. They have great enthusiasm for teaching.” All of my classmates nodded their heads in agreement.

That was apparently the answer Dr. McSweeney expected. H e said, “I ask that question every year, and I always get the same answer.” He went on to explain that he opened with that question because it got future teachers to think about what separates the great teachers from the notsogreat. He said, “We all remember our favorite teachers — the ones who had passion (激情) and enthusiasm, the ones who loved and enjoyed what they were doing. We want each of you to become that kind of

teacher. Always remember those special teachers.”It's a statement I never forgot once during my thirtyfive years in the classroom.

Since he was nine, Babar Ali has been running his own school in Bhabta, a small village in West Bengal, India, passing on to the children of poor families the knowledge he has acquired at his school during the day.

It began when children in his village asked him questions about what he learned at the 1,000-rupeeayear school their parents could not afford.

“It started without much effort,”he says. “There were lots of children who had dropped out of school, or never been to school at all. They were always asking questions about my lessons and I would repeat everything for them.”

“There used to be just eight pupils, and my friends helped me with the teaching. We worked on the standard of teaching. The word spread to nearby villages, and gradually we took on more and more students.”

Five years later, the school has a total of 10 teachers, all of whom are students at school, and 650 pupils.

On a typical day, Babar will rise at 5 am, do housework, then take a bus to school in a village three miles away. From 10 am to 4 pm, he focuses on his own studies, then he races back to his village to welcome his students at 5 pm. He teaches until 8 pm. The teaching doesn't make him tired, he says, but gives him more strength to keep up his busy life.

His parents are filled with pride. His father, Nasiruddin, was shocked when he first discovered his son was teaching. “I couldn't believe it. He's always rushing from place to place and I was worried it might affect his studies. So I visited his school. Seeing his dedication (奉献) to teaching cleared my doubts,” he says.

A Social Survey — My Neighbourhood

A

It is not always a good thing to praise children because “empty” words may make them unhappy. Words such as “well done” may make them doubt their own abilities, a leading psychologist Stephen Grosz has warned. He says that words such as “you're so clever” or “you're such an artist” could also hinder (妨碍) their future development at school. He says that such empty praise causes children to be unhappy as they may say they can't live up to these expectations.

Instead he advises parents and teachers to praise children less frequently and use words like “trying really hard”. Mr. Grosz said, “Empty praise is as bad as thoughtless criticism. People often pay no attention to children's feelings and thoughts.” He also mentions research showing that children who are heavily praised probably perform worse at school.

Some psychologists from Columbia University asked 128 pupils aged 10 and 11 to work out a number of math problems. Afterwards, some were told, “Y ou did really well — you're so clever.” But he researchers told the other group, “Y ou did really well — you must have tried really hard.” Both groups of children were then given more difficult questions and those who had been told they were clever did not do as well as the others.

He says that when collecting his daughter from a school near their home in North London, he heard a teacher tell her, “You have drawn the most beautiful tree. Well done.” Later, af ter she had done another drawing, the same teacher said, “Wow, you are really an artist.” In his book, Mr. Grosz writes, “How could I explain to the teacher that I would prefer it if she did not praise my daughter?”

As a parent of two children, I strongly agree with Mr. Grosz. I praise them when praising is proven right. I want them to know if I praise them, they have done something beyond my expectation, beyond what they are able to do.

具体有:a. 某些常用动词的习惯用法的辨义, 如:ask, give, call, make, find, get, keep, want, see, hear, come, take, put, break, turn等; f.某些常用动词短语的辨义, 如:give in, give out, give away, give up; turn on, turn off, turn down, turn up等。 一致”;break down“失败;垮了”;break up“放假;断交”;come up“被提出”;come to“涉及;苏醒;总共”; fit in“相处融洽”;get up“站起来”;keep back“扣下”;look into“浏览”;make out“理解”;pick up“学会”;put aside“留出”;take up“从事于”;turn out“出现”;wear out“磨损;筋疲力尽”等。

如:suggest(建议), insist(坚持要求),demand(要求)、ask(请求)等后接的宾语从句中都 要用虚拟语气。善于归纳近义词、同义词,如:在复习join的用法时,能够联系join in,take part in,join sb in归纳复习之后,要做 对应练习。

1.From talking robots and video phones to rovers on Mars, technology has become so advanced that the previously impossible seems to occur on a daily basis. And yet – we still have no cure for the common cold. Why can’t we st op the common cold? According to Peter Barlow, a scientist at Edinburgh Napier University in the UK, the main challenge lies in the many different types of cold viruses that are produced by the rhinoviruses (鼻病毒). There are at least 160 types. They mutate (突变) so easily that they quickly become resistant to drugs, or learn to hide from our immune systems. In other words, a single cure isn’t likely to work on every type of cold. However, researchers from Stanford University and the University of California, San Francisco, have found a possible answer. They discovered a protein that the viruses need. Without it, they can’t spread inside your body. To identify the gene which produces the specific protein needed by the viruses, researchers used a gene-editing technique to test all genes in the human genome (基因组) one by one for thousands of cells. These modified (改变的) cells were then exposed to a range of enteroviruses(肠病毒), including the rhinoviruses which cause the common cold. All the viruses were unable to replicate (复制) inside cells without a gene that produces a specific protein, called methyltransferase SETD3. Then, they tested genetically modified mice, which were completely unable to produce the protein. The mice were able to live healthy, normal lives wit hout the protein. “Lacking that gene protected the mice completely from viral infection.” associate professor Jan Carette, from Stanford, told the BBC. “These mice would always die, but they survived and we saw a very strong reduction in viral replication and very strong protection.” Carette said the plan is to find a drug which can temporarily suppress (抑制) the protein, instead of producing genetically modified humans. “We have identified a fantastic target that all enteroviruses and rhinoviruses require and depend on. Take that away and the virus really has no chance.” said Carette. “This is a really good first step – the second step is to have a chemical that mimics (模拟) this genetic deletion.” he added.
