Jim was a young man who was honest and worthy of trust, so his boss was pleased with him. As he was easy to deal with, he was popular with his workmates, too. Though they made fun of him a great deal, he never got angry with them.

But Jim's one great shortcoming was that he could never tell a lie, no matter how hard he tried, not even a little one. In fact, he was so honest and shy that he would blush (脸红) even when he was telling the truth. He used to stand in front of the mirror and practice lying while looking himself in the eye at the same time. As soon as he told a lie he'd see his face starting to go red he had to look away.

One morning, however, he didn't feel like going to work. He had been to a party the night before that hadn't ended until the early hours of the morning. And so for the first time in his life he decided to take the day off. But in order to do this, he'd have to lie to his boss. He called his boss, pretending to be a woman. "I'm afraid Jim can't come to work today. He isn't feeling very well."

Poor Jim was thankful that his boss couldn't see him just at that moment because his face was bright red.

"Thank you for letting me know," said Mr. Woods, his boss, and then just as he was about to hang up, he said, "Just a moment, madam, who's speaking?"

Questions 41 to 45 are based on the same passage or dialog.

Friends play an important part in our lives. And while we may get along well with a number of people, we can only be friends with very few. The average student, for example, has about 6 friends.

Most people spend time with others they like, but still the degree of intimacy between them and the reasons for their shared interest vary enormously. As we get to know people, we take into account

things like age, race, economic condition, social position, and intelligence. Although these factors are not of prime importance, it is more difficult to get along with people when there is a marked difference in age and background.

Many friends avoid argument. It is usual for close friends to have similar ideas and beliefs. They have attitudes and interests in common that they often talk about and they might think of themselves being "on the same wavelength". It generally takes time to reach this point however. And the more intimately involved people become, the more they rely on one another for favors and to keep promises. Also, friends have to learn to put up with annoying habits and to tolerate differences of opinion.

In contrast with marriage, there are no friendship ceremonies to strengthen the association between two people. But the supporting and understanding of each other that results from shared experiences and emotions does seem to create a powerful bond, which can overcome differences in background, and break down barriers of age, class, or race.

41.What is True according to the first paragraph?

A. A person can only have a few real friends.

B. We should put things such as age, race, economic conditions, social positions, and

intelligence in the first place when making friends.

C. People whom we can get along well with are our friends.

D. A student has six friends at most.

42.In Paragraph 3, "being on the same wavelength" means ______.

A. talking as fast as others

B. having the same topic as others

C. having attitudes and interests in common

D. having the same experiences and emotions

43.The word " intimately" in Paragraph 3 perhaps means______.

A. far away

B. closely

C. well

D. in distance

44.Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?

A. Even friends may have difference of opinion.

B. Friends never argue with each other.

C. It takes time to become good friends.

D. Shared experiences can make for a strong friendship.

45.To strengthen friendly relationships, people______.

A. should have the same age, class, and race

B. should get rid of the annoying habits

C. should support and understand each other

D. should hold friendship ceremonies

Questions 66 to 70 are based on the same passage or dialog.

Time limit: 4 minutes and 44 seconds

Anna Whitney, a sophomore (大学二年级学生) at Colorado State University, first had difficulty taking tests when she began college. She observed, "I was always well-prepared for my tests, but I could not answer the questions correctly. I was always so nervous that my mind would go blank. I couldn't think of the answer." Another student in microbiology (微生物学) had similar experiences.

He said, "My first chemistry test was very difficult. Then, on the second test, I sat down to take it, and I was so nervous that I was shaking. I knew the answers, yet I couldn't write them down!"

These two young students were experiencing something called "test anxiety". Because a student worries about a test, his or her mind does not work as well as it usually does. The student cannot write or think clearly due to the extreme tension(紧张)and nervousness. Although poor grades are often a result of poor study habits, sometimes test anxiety causes the low grades. Recently, test anxiety has been recognized as a real problem, not just an excuse or a false explanation of lazy students.

Special university counseling (咨询服务) courses try to help students. In these courses, counselors try to help students by teaching them how to manage test anxiety. At some universities, students take tests to measure their anxiety. If the tests show their anxiety is high, the students can take a short course to help them deal with their tension. These courses teach students how to relax their bodies. Students are trained to become calm in very tense situations. By controlling their nervousness, they can let their minds work easily. Learned information then comes out without difficulty on a test.

Book One Unit One 10.Translate the following paragraph into Chinese. Socrates was a classical Greek philosopher who is credited with laying the fundamentals (基础) of modern Western philosophy. He is a mysterious figure known chiefly through the accounts of later classical writers, especially the writings of his most famous student Plato, Socrates has become well known for his contribution to the field of ethics. His method of teaching, known as the Socratic Method, by asking and answering questions to stimulate critical thinking and to explain ideas remains a commonly used tool in a wide range of discussions. He also made important and lasting contributions to the field of epistemology(认识论) and logic, and the influence of his ideas and approach remains a strong foundation for Western philosophy that followed. Socrates was the most colorful figure in the history of ancient philosophy. His fame was widespread in his own time, and his name soon became a household word although he constructed no philosophical system, established no school, and founded no sect(宗派). 译文: 苏格拉底是古希腊哲学家,被誉为现代西方哲学的奠基人。

大学英语读写译(1)期末测试题及答案1

大学英语读写译(1)期末测试题及 答案1 大学英语读写译(一) 期末测试题(1) Part L Reading Comprehension (50%) Section A< Skimming and Scanning (10%) Directions: In this party you will have 15 minutes to go over the passage quickly and answer the questions on Answer Sheet. For questions 1-7, mark Y (for YES) if the statement agrees with the information given in the passage; N (for NO) if statement contradicts the information given in the passage; NG (for NOT GIVEN) if the information is not given in the passage.

For question 8-10, complete the sentences with the information given in the passage. Spiders Spiders can be distinguished from other Arachnids because the prosoma (combined head and thorax) is only separated from the opisthosoma (abdomen) by a narrow waist, in other Arachnids the whole body appears to be much more of a single unit. All spiders produce silk, but only some construct webs to catch their homes and to protect their eggs. All spiders possess poison glands but very few of them are dangerous to humans, of the 600+species in Britain only 12 (at least one of these is a recent human assisted colonist) are strong enough to pierce the human skin, and apart from allergies, none are more dangerous than a common wasp. Most spiders have 8 eyes (though some have 6, 4, 2 or 0),as well as 8 legs. (By the way if you count the claws as separate leg section [which you shouldn9t really] then their legs have 8 parts as well [coxa, trochanter; femur, patella, tibia, tarsus, metatarus, and claws])
