Passage One

I made a pledge to myself on the way down to the vacation beach cottage. For two weeks I would try to be a loving husband and father. Totally loving. No ifs, ands or buts.

The idea had come to me as I listened to a talk on my car radio. The speaker was quoting a Biblical passage about husbands being thoughtful of their wives. Then he went on to say, "Love is an act of will. A person can choose to love." To myself, I had to admit that I had been a selfish husband. Well, for two weeks that would change.

And it did. Right from the moment I kissed Evelyn at the door and said, "That new yellow sweater looks great on you."

"Oh, Tom, you noticed," she said, surprised and pleased. Maybe a little puzzled.

After the long drive, I wanted to sit and read. Evelyn suggested a walk on the beach. I started to refuse, but then I thought, "Evelyn's been alone here with the kids all week and now she wants to be alone with me." We walked along the beach while the children flew their kites.

So it went. Two weeks of not calling the Wall Street firm where I am a director, a visit to the shell museum though I usually hate museums. Relaxed and happy, that's how the whole vacation passed. I made a new pledge to keep on remembering to choose to love.

There was one thing that went wrong with my experiment, however. Evelyn and I still laugh about it today. On the last night at our cottage, preparing for bed, Evelyn stared at me with the saddest expression.

"What's the matter?" I asked her.

"Tom," she said in a voice filled with distress. "Do you know something I don't?"

"What do you mean?"

"Well...that checkup I had several weeks ago...our doctor...did he tell you something about me? Tom, you've been so good to me...am I dying?"

It took a moment for it all to sink in. Then I burst out laughing.

"No, honey," I said, wrapping her in my arms. "You're not dying; I'm just starting to live."

Passage Two

Human needs seem endless. When a hungry man gets a meal, he begins to think about an overcoat; when a manager gets a new sports car, a big house and pleasure boats come into view.

Human needs can be divided into several levels. When one level of needs is satisfied, another level appears.

The first and most basic level of needs involves food. Once this need is satisfied, a second level of needs, clothing and some sort of shelter, appears. By the end of World War II, these needs had been satisfied for a great majority of Americans. Then a third level appeared. It included such items as automobiles and new houses.

By 1957 or 1958 this third level of needs was fairly well satisfied. Then, in the late 1950s, a fourth level of needs appeared: the "life-enriching" level. While the first three levels involve physical satisfaction that is feed, safety and transportation, this fourth level stresses mental needs for recognition, achievement and happiness. It includes a variety of goods and services which could be regarded as luxurious. Among them are vacation trips, the best medical and dental care, and recreation. Also included here are fancy goods and the latest styles in clothing.

On the fourth level, a lot of money is spent on services, while on the first three levels more is spent on goods. Will consumers raise their sights to a fifth level of needs as their income increases, or will they continue to demand luxuries and personal services on the fourth level?

A fifth level would probably involve needs that can be achieved best by community action. Consumers may be spending more on taxes to pay for government action against disease,

ignorance, crime, and prejudice. After filling our stomachs, our clothes closets, our garages, our teeth, and our minds, we now may seek to ensure the health, safety and leisure to fully enjoy the good things and services on the first four levels.

26. According to the passage, man will begin to think about such needs as housing and clothing only when __________.

Passage One

Many people have pondered the question: What is the meaning of life — why are we here? After much reflection, most conclude that this question is unanswerable. Tragically, some decide that life has little or no meaning. A fortunate few arrive at a place where they say "Yes! I understand. My life does have meaning." They realize that the answer isn't something outside of who they are. The answer is in the nature of their existence.

An individual must live for the sake of his own existence. Altruists deny this fundamental truth. They claim it is selfish and mean to be concerned with one's self-interest. They advocate sacrificing for others. Unfortunately, many unconditionally accept this faulty proposition. They are oblivious to the fact that this belief is illogical.

Is it really better to give than to receive? Most would say yes. What they don't understand is that somebody has to be on the receiving end. Using the "logic" of an altruist the person receiving would have to turn around and give what he received to another. They would pass around the object or value in question like a hot potato. Then it would arrive back at its starting point. So the saying "It is better to give than to receive" is an empty slogan with no basis in reality.

A rationally selfish individual trades value for value. He lives for his own sake. He helps another satisfy their most urgent desires when he treats them as a trader — not as someone he has to give something to — or take something from. An altruist expects people to live for others — sometimes the altruist himself. He demands that people give their lives away. No wonder so many people find little or no satisfaction in their existence. Since they are sacrificing values without receiving any in return, their lives become meaningless.

The rationally selfish individual finds meaning in his existence because he is obtaining values — and that includes spiritual values. He would never purposely sacrifice a higher value for a lower value. Since others benefit when involved in a relationship with him everyone gains values (whether they realize it or not). No wonder the rationally selfish person discovers his life is worthwhile. It is an experience filled with pleasure and ecstasy.

21. What do altruists believe?

A. They believe that people should live for themselves.

B. They believe that people should strive for their own interests.

C. They believe that people should sacrifice their own interests for others.

D. They believe that people emphasize on receiving rather than giving.

A. It is impossible to ask everyone to sacrifice his own interest to others.

B. It is impossible to expect people to live for others.

D. It is impossible to expect people to give up their own values for some higher ones.

B. A rationally selfish individual would merely obtain material values in his existence.

C. A rationally selfish individual would expect other people to live for him.

D. A rationally selfish individual would be concerned with his or her own life.

24. Why are so many people not satisfied with their life?

A. Because they can't benefit from sacrificing their values.

B. Because they can't find out the meaning of their life.

C. Because they don't want to sacrifice their values for others.

D. Because they have to give their lives away for some higher values.

B. Learn how to sacrifice for other people.

C. Learn how to live for yourself.

Passage Two

Adversities are a part of living, and we choose the way we react to each adversity in our lives. I would be the last to deny that adversities can be exceedingly difficult. Many times they will be senseless, unfair, painful, and beyond our control to prevent. However, they come into our lives for a reason. We can choose to learn valuable lessons from each adversity we encounter. Marvin J. Ashton said, "Adversity will surface in every life. How we meet it makes the difference."

Tough times, events, and circumstances can teach us much about ourselves and other people. They bring us face to face with our honesty, integrity, sense of personal responsibility, and ways of dealing with life's blows. Initially, we want to bury our hurt and grief deeply inside rather than experiencing painful emotions. However, before the pain and grief will subside, we must pick up the pieces. We must fully move through these feelings of discouragement, grief, and pain, allowing ourselves complete emotional expression before the pain will ease its hold.

In the process of allowing ourselves to feel our emotions completely, we learn valuable life lessons. We also discover how resilient and strong we are at any given point in our life. If we look closely at each adversity, we become wiser to life's ways, our ways, and people's ways. Each adversity we encounter can bring new insight into human nature.

As tough as life's lessons sometimes are, each holds the seed of an equal or greater blessing, a pathway to new growth as a human being. It is our responsibility to learn each lesson. Otherwise, we will be handed a more difficult scenario of the same lesson again. The lessons we are meant to learn will reappear until we learn them completely.

The more difficult the adversity is, the more valuable will be the lessons it offers to teach. By exercising faith in a power greater than ourselves, we discover we are not alone in any adversity. We learn to see blessings appear — sometimes years later — that we would not have received had we not been handed tough times.

26. What does Marvin J. Ashton mean according to the first paragraph?

A. Tough times and difficulties would appear everyday.

Passage One

Today, there are many avenues open to those who wish to continue their education. However, nearly all require some break in one's career in order to attend school full time.

Part-time education, that is, attending school at night or for one weekend a month, tends to drag the process out over time and puts the completion of a degree program out of reach of many people. Additionally, such programs require a fixed time commitment which can also impact negatively on one's career and family time.

Of the many approaches to teaching and learning, however, perhaps the most flexible and accommodating is that called distance learning. Distance learning is an educational method which allows a student the flexibility to study at his or her own pace to achieve the academic goals which are so necessary in today's world.

The time required to study may be set aside at the student's convenience with due regard

to the other requirements in his or her life. Additionally, the student may enroll in distance learning courses from virtually any place in the world, while continuing to pursue their chosen career. Tutorial assistance may be available via regular airmail, telephone, facsimile machine, teleconferencing and over the Internet.

Good distance learning programs are characterized by the inclusion of a subject evaluation tool with every subject. This precludes the requirement for a student to travel away from home to take a test. Another characteristic of a good distance learning program is the equivalence of the distance learning course with the same subject materials to the course on the home campus. The diploma or degree should also be the same whether distance learning or on-campus study is employed. The individuality of the professor-student relationship is another characteristic of a good distance learning program. In the final analysis, a good distance learning program has a place not only for the individual student but also the corporation or business that wants to work in partnership with their employees for the educational benefit, professional development, and business growth of the organization. Sponsoring distance learning programs for their employees gives the business the advantage of retaining career-minded people while contributing to their personal and professional growth through education.

21. According to the passage, which of the following is NOT a disadvantage of part-time education?

Passage Two

Consumers are being confused and misled by the hodge-podge (大杂烩) of environmental claims made by household products, according to a "Green Labeling" study published by Consumers International.

Among the report's more outrageous (令人无法容忍的) findings, a German fertilizer described itself as "earthworm friendly", a brand of flour said it was "non-polluting" and a British toilet paper claimed to be "environmentally friendlier".

The study was written and researched by Britain's National Consumer Council (NCC) for lobby group Consumer International. It was funded by the German and Dutch governments and the European Commission.

"While many good and useful claims are being made, it is clear there is a long way to go in ensuring shoppers are adequately informed about the environmental impact of products they buy," said Consumers International director Anna Fielder.

The 10-country study surveyed product packaging in Britain, Western Europe, Scandinavia and the United States. It found that products sold in Germany and the United Kingdom made the most environmental claims on average.

The report focused on claims made by specific products, such as detergent (洗涤剂), insect sprays and some garden products. It did not test the claims, but compared them to labeling guidelines set by the International Standards Organization (ISO) in September, 1999.

Researchers documented claims of environmental friendliness made by about 2,000 products and found many too vague or too misleading to meet ISO standards. "Many products had specially-designed labels to make them seem environmentally friendly, but in fact many of these symbols mean nothing," said report researcher Philip Page.

"Laundry detergents made the most number of claims with 158. Household cleaners were second with 145 separate claims, while paints were third on our list with 73. The high numbers show how very confusing it must be for consumers to sort the true from the misleading," he said.

The ISO labeling standards ban vague or misleading claims on product packaging, because terms such as "environmentally friendly" and "non-polluting" cannot be verified. "What we are now pushing for is to have multinational corporations meet the standards set by the ISO," said Page.

26. According to the passage, the NCC found it outrageous that ______.

A. all the products surveyed claim to meet ISO standards

B. the claims made by products are often unclear or deceiving

C. consumers would believe many of the manufactures' claim

D. few products actually prove to be environmentally friendly

1.整体感知文章内容,在_______________________上为文章你写一个简洁的标题。
