Say “Happy H olidays” with a Card

People seldom write letters these days, right? But they still send holiday cards.

Each year families decorate their living rooms with the cards. The family photos, tiny paper Christmas trees and “Season’s Greetings” fill mailboxes throughout December.

But with the economic crisis (危机), fewer people can afford to buy cards. It’s said that American people will send about 1.5 billion Christmas cards this year. In 2009, that number was 1.9 billion.

Today’s younger ge neration keeps in touch with friends and relatives through Facebook and Twitter. It would seem that they would prefer cheaper and faster e-cards to traditional cards. In fact, they don’t. Research group Mintel found that e-cards make up less than 1 percent of the greeting card market. The hand-written holiday card is still going strong, although there is competition from the Internet. Why? Because a holiday card is a more special, more personal way to communicate than an

e-mail. Unlike most other letters, holiday cards are works of art. People put them on the refrigerator, Christmas tree or wall.

Researcher Pamila Danziger said she doesn’t think cards are a dying art. “There

may very well be people who have given up Christmas cards and who are returning,”

sa id Danziger. “I think it’s just a challenge to the virtual world. Y ou may have 600 friends on Facebook, but really only 30 of them mean anything to you.” So, give

greeting cards some time to recover, they’re a holiday tradition that won’t die.

( )66. Traditional cards are _____________ than e-cards.

A. cheaper but slower

B. cheaper and faster

C. more expensive but faster

D. more expensive and slower

A. 无聊的
