Read Your Mind by the Internet

According to an investigation by The Wall Street Journal, all it takes is a tiny file in a computer-a single code consisting of a long series of numbers and letters-to record the computer user's age, gender, location, favorite movies and hobbies.

The newspaper reports that Lotame Solutions Inc.,a New York company, uses sophisticated software called a"beacon"to capture what people are typing on a website.

Lotame packages that data into profiles about individuals, only without their names, and sells the profiles to companies seeking customers.Batches of such data may be sold for a few dollars.

The Wall Street Journal probe discovered that spying on Internet users is one of the fastest-growing businesses on the World Wide Web.

Today, tracking consumers is far more intrusive than the public realizes. For example, the top50websites in the US on average installed64pieces of tracking technology onto the computers of visitors, usually with no warning.

The"cookie"-a tiny text file put on your PC by websites or marketing firms which might be used to remember your preferences for one site,or to track you across many sites-is already old news. There are new and more complex tools such as"beacons"which scan in real time what people are doing on a webpage. These beacons instantly assess the Internet user's location, income, shopping interests and even medical conditions.

Tracking files get onto websites and are downloaded to a computer,in several ways.Often, companies simply pay sites to distribute their tracking files. But tracking companies sometimes hide their files within free software offered to websites,or hide them within other tracking files or ads. When this happens, websites aren't always aware that they're installing the files on visitors'computers.

Tracking companies are often staffed by math gurus with expertise in quantitative analysis. Some use probability algorithms to try to pair what they know about a person's online behavior with data from offline sources about household income, geography and education, among other things.

Personal data gathered from such tracking is now bought and sold on stock market-like exchanges.

The new technology is now exerting a profound impact on the Internet industry, especially on how retailers locate and sell to their https://www.doczj.com/doc/1a14221393.html,lions of Internet users around the world also face unprecedented threats.Private, sensitive, personal and business information is being gathered and sold without their knowledge.

Companies insist the information they gather is anonymous and the data is used harmlessly. But the technology has grown so powerful and evasive that even some of the biggest websites in the US don't know that they were installing intrusive files on visitors'computers. These include https://www.doczj.com/doc/1a14221393.html, and https://www.doczj.com/doc/1a14221393.html,.

Next time you visit a webpage and find an ad banner advertising something you've been planning to buy, don`t be amazed that your computer can read your mind.

Network Security and the Hacker

I'm so tired of hackers.

That's what happens when you have bunch of computers

runing the same software.Because they share the same flaws,

if you can hack into one,you can hack into them all.

That appens in nature too.A virus exploits the same vulnerability in a genetically similar group and wipes everyone out.

Luckily, because of random mutations in our genes, most species exhibit enough genetic variation,or biodiversity, that a disease that kills one member won't necessarily kill the next. That's why computer scientists are trying to create a computerized version of biodiversity, which they’re calling cyber-diversity.

Computer Scientists are currently researching various ways to automatically and randomlymodify software in slightly different ways without changing the overall functionality. To users like us,the computers would seem the same, but hackers would have to treat computers on a case-by-case basis.

Even in nature, viruses mutate. That's why the flu keeps coming back year after year.Just like hackers.Still, the National Science Foundation is investing$750,000in cyber-diversity.Think of it as evolution in fast forward.

A survey of16to24year olds has found that75%of them feel they"couldn't live"without the internet.

The report, published by online charity YouthNet,also found that four out of five young people used the web to look for advice.

About one third added that they felt no need to talk to a person face to face about their problems because of the resources available online.

Despite high-profile examples of internet security breaches, such as the recent incident of phishing email scams,76%of the survey group thought the internet was a safe place"as long as you know what you're doing".

"Probably the middle-aged are the most vulnerable,"said Open University psychologist Graham Jones.

"I think children, teenagers and people under their mid-20s have grown up with technology and they understand it deeply,"he said.

Mr Jones thinks it is the parents who need to become more sophisticated.

"One of the biggest problems for children is not that they are vulnerable but that their parents don't know what they're doing,"he said.

"It's important that parents have full understanding of the internet and its risks--younger people need parental direction,"he said.

Its author,Professor Michael Hulme of Lancaster University, names this age group"digital natives"as they have grown up in an environment rich with computer and mobile technology.

"For young people the internet is part of the fabric of their world and does not exist in isolation from the physical world,"he said.

Youthnet runs websites offering advice, information and volunteering opportunities to young people. Youthnet

"The need for a safer, trusted[online]place has never been greater,"said Fiona Dawes,Youthnet's chief executive.

"Youthnet will be taking the insights of this report to heart as we plan the future of our services."“Youthnet网站在规划未来服务的时候,是会认真考虑这份调查报告中年轻一代的需求的。”

Netiquette

Are manners dead?Cellphones and social networking may

be killing off the old civilities and good graces, but a new

generation of etiquette gurus is rising to make

old-fashioned protocols relevant to a new generation.

Their goal:to help young people navigate thorny,tech-age minefields, like invites on social networking sites and online dating, not to mention actual face-to-face contact with people.

Perhaps the fastest growing area of social advice is what's been termed“netiquette”.There are online tutorials on using emoticons in business e-mails,being discreet when posting on social networks and re-posting too many micro blog messages.

Young people“are getting sick of the irony and rudeness that is so prevalent in their online lives”,said Jane Pratt, editor in chief of XoJane,a women's lifestyle website.“The return of etiquette is in part a response to the harshness of the interactions they are having in the digital sphere.”

“Nice is very cool right now,”she added.

The social quandaries seem to be endless. Are you obligated to respond to party invitations on Sina Weibo? Is it rude to listen to your iPod while sharing a ride with someone else?

When Daniel Post Senning, the great great grandson of Emily Post,a well-known etiquette writer in the US,was working on the18th edition of Emily Post's Etiquette,he found it impossible to cover technology in a single chapter.Instead,he devoted an entire book to it,Emily Post's Manners in a Digital World: Living Well Online.

The book tackles questions like whether one should announce a serious illness on a social networking site.(Yes,Senning said, but medical updates should be confined to close friends and family.)

Even the gurus who position themselves as the embodiment of Old World civility feel obliged to tackle 21st-century conundrums.

Charles MacPherson runs a school for butlers in Canada. In his new book The Butler Speaks,MacPherson talks about whether one may keep a cellphone on the table during a dinner party.

“It is never OK to leave your cellphone on the dinner table,”he said.“If you must go out and anticipate a call, first inform your hostess of the situation and keep your cellphone on vibrate and in your pocket or on your lap.In the event that it does ring, excuse yourself from the table—don’t explain why, just a

simple‘excuse me’—and leave the dining room before taking the call.”

Indeed, there is a retro allure to etiquette that appeals to20-somethings,said Pam Krauss,a publisher of several etiquette books.“There's a whole generation of young people for whom etiquette, much like cooking, sewing, and other‘home arts’,was not passed down from their parents or grandparents the way it would have been in years past,”Krauss told The New York Times.

Scorpio:Enthusiastic,Loyal and Vindictive

(1)THE BRIGHT SIDE

Although they often get a bad press astrologically,Scorpios

have very intense personalities with hidden depths of

perspicacity and a compassion which reaches out to

troubled people, even though this may not always show on

the surface.Being deeply emotional themselves,Scorpios

understand and accept the feelings and pain that other signs often find they cannot handle.

Magnetism

Scorpio is not afraid to go into darkness,so this sign makes an ideal therapist, and many doctors and surgeons are Scorpios, using their incisive skills in a constructive way.Scorpios also have incredible personal magnetism and can be very loyal and devoted friends or lovers.

Scorpios have a hidden and secretive side and are not averse to using their very deep understanding of other people for their own ends-usually directed towards gaining power.

Indeed,Scorpio has a fascination with power, how to use it,how to master it,and how to hold it over

people. At times, this can extend into extreme cruelty, for Scorpio is a vindictive, brooding sign which never forgets a grudge.Scorpio can also have an inner self-destruct button which is pushed compulsively from time to time.

Penetrator

The Scorpio personality has a habit of reaching the parts other signs would not wish to reach.Scorpio's steely gaze can penetrate to your very core. But their piercing intuitive powers are often hidden by an exterior that gives no clues as to their findings.
