1.In the following year, a formal peace pact was signed. About a month later, Cixi left Xi’an at last. She was utterly fearful of foreigners just as she was extremely arrogant toward her own countrymen. She stopped far a long time in Henan and halted in Baoding for quite a few days before finally arriving in Beijing. According to unofficial accounts,an amusing episode took place during this long and drawn out journey. When a local official offered a monkey to her as a gift, she was so pleased that she ordered a yellow mandarin jacket to be conferred upon the monkey.later, a eunuch (太监) heard some officials complaining that people were considered less worthy than a monkey and went to inform Cixi, who realized that her order had been indeed a little too whimsical (古怪的). So she issued another edict granting each of the escorting officials a yellow mandarin jacket. Upon the receipt of such an unusual favor the officials did not know whether they should thank Cixi or rather the monkey for it.

Part III. Reading Comprehension (30 points)

Directions: Read the following passages and choose the best answer.

Passage 1 Array As the great low ebb of high tech sweeps through the world of online commerce, two kinds of sites are

weathering the storm. The first group is often referred to as "clicks and mortar" ─online extensions of

stores like Wal-Mart or Sears. They take an existing, traditional business and extend it into the online arena.

The second group provides a unique service made possible by the Internet's special characteristics. Job sites

and online auctioneer e-Bay are both good examples of the new breed of business that the Internet continues

to foster.

Cafepress. com is one of the latter group. It's a website that provides users with online stores where they

can sell shirts, mugs, and mouse pads customized with their own logos and / or slogans. By itself, this is a

fairly useful service, and an example of how the Internet has changed the art of marketing and customer

service.

Cafepress. com, however, is rather remarkable for another reason. Customers don't need to print large

lots of items. They don't need to worry about shipping the goods to their customers. And they don't need to

talk to another human being to get their store "built" in the first place. The site lets you upload an image and

choose what sort of item you'd like it to appear on. You can then choose how much to mark the item up─the

difference between the item's base cost and your mark-up price is your profit.

Base prices are high, but understandable when you consider what cafepress. com does for the initial

investment. An ll-ounce mug starts at $ 10. 99. 'For that, cafepress. com prints the mug on a piece-by-piece

basis, provides the ordering software, handles the money, packs it, and ships it for you. The mug's purchaser

pays shipping and handling costs; the store owner's effort is limited to uploading the original image for the

mug, setting the cost, and writing a brief description of the item.

It seems to be catching on. "More and more companies come to us, who want to do some kind of

merchandising, who want to offer a range of products to their users, but don't want the hassles associated

with it," says Maheesh Jain, Cafepress. com's co-founder and vice-president. "That's where we come in─

we're one of the few companies that offer this kind of full-service solution. "

But the most exciting aspect of cafepress. com is not its ability to help major corporations outsource and

customize their merchandising efforts. What's remarkable about the system is how simple it is to open a store.

An average individual with an idea that could sell 50 T-shirts or mugs can't justify a traditional

merchandising effort, but with cafepress. com, users can easily bring ideas to fruition with very little time

and no financial risk. Moreover, the quality of the merchandise is good; I've ordered a mug and a shirt from

cafepress. com, and both were shipped relatively promptly, and arrived exactly as promised.

Cafepress. com is an idea that's easy to get excited about. It's a small─but tangible ─example of how

the Internet can change the way we live.

1. The expression "weathering the storm" in the first sentence means

A. surviving a crisis.

B. coming into being.

D. the second kind offers untraditional jobs to people experienced in auctioning.

3. Which of the following about Cafepress. com is NOT true?

A. Its customers are those who want to sell things rather than buy things.

A. Those who sell a great variety of items.

B. Those who sell unconventional commodities.

C. Those who want to avoid the trouble of negotiating with clients.

5. What is the most outstanding aspect about Cafepress. com according to the author?

A. The help it offers major companies in marketing their commodities.

B. The conveniences it gives to companies in selling their commodities.

C. The high quality of the merchandise it offers to customers.

D. The speed and security it offers users to put their ideas into practice.

Passage 2

The prefix Mach is used to describe supersonic speed. It was named for Ernst Mach (1838--1916), a Czech-born Austrian physicist, who contributed to the study of sound. When twice the speed of sound, it is Mach 2. When it is near but below the speed of sound, its speed can be designated at less than Mach l, for example, Mach 90. Mach is defined as "the ratio of the velocity of a rocket or a jet to the velocity of sound in the medium being considered. "

When a plane passes the sound barrier - flying faster than sound travels, listeners in the area hear thunderclaps, but the pilot of the plane does not hear them.

Sound is produced by vibrations of an object and is transmitted by alternate increase and decrease in pressure that radiate outward through a material media of molecules—somewhat like waves spreading out on a pond after a rock has been tossed into it.

The frequency of sound is determined by the number of times the vibrating waves undulate per second and is measured in cycles per second. The slower the cycle of waves, the lower the frequency. As frequencies increase, the sound is higher in pitch.

Sound is audible to human beings only if the frequency falls within a certain range. The human ear is usually not sensitive to frequencies of fewer than 20 vibrations per second, or more than about 20,000 vibrations per second─although this range varies among individuals. Anything at a pitch higher than the human ear can hear is termed ultrasonic.

Intensity, or loudness, is the strength of the pressure of these radiating waves and is measured in decibels (分贝). The human ear responds to intensity in a range from zero to 120 decibels. Any sound with pressure over 120 decibels is painful to the human ear.

The speed of sound is generally placed at 1088 feet per second at sea level at 32 degrees Fahrenheit. It varies in other temperatures and in different media. Sound travels faster in water than in air, and even faster in iron and steel. It travels a mile in 5 seconds in air, it does a mile under water in l second, and it travels through iron in l/3 second. It travels through ice cold vapor at approximately 4,708 feet per second; ice-cold water, 4,938; granite, 12,960; hardwood, 12, 620; brick, 11,960, glass, 16,410 to 19,690; silver, 8,658; gold, 5,717.

6. According to this passage, "Mach" refers to

A. the ratio of the air speed of an aircraft to the speed of sound.

B. a machine.

C. a Czech-born Australian physicist.

D. the pilot of the plane.

7. Sound is produced by

A. vibrations of an object passing through the air.

B. spreading of waves after a rock being tossed into a pond.

C. thunders.

D. a flying plane.

8. At which frequency is the sound audible to human beings?

B. More than about 20,000 vibrations per second.

C. About in a range of 20 and 20,000 vibrations per second.

D. 120 vibrations per second.

9. Which of the following about decibel is correct?

A. It's a unit for measuring the intensity of sound.

B. It's the pressure of radiating waves.

C. It's the frequency of radiating waves.

D. It's the speed of sound.

10. Which of the following is true?

A. Sound travels fastest through the hardest things.

B. Sound travels at different speed in different temperatures and in different media.

C. Sound travels fastest in hottest temperature.

D. Sound travels fastest in coldest temperature.

Passage 3

Many small cultural groups live in places far away from modern cities. Some of these tribes have never

had any communication outside of their small geographical areas. When they do contact the outside world,

their lives usually change. Learning how to change without losing the best of their own cultures is a problem

for them. How can primitive cultures learn to live in a technological world? How can they do this without

becoming lost?

One native tribe in New Guinea has a difficult situation. The people of the tribe are being pulled in two

ways. First of all, copper, a bright orange-colored metal, has been discovered under the land where they have

lived for centuries. Developers want to take the copper out of the ground, to mine it. The tribe needs the

money that a copper mine would bring. The problem is that the copper is directly under the most important

buildings of their society. These buildings are a necessary part of their religion. How can the copper be

mined without changing the group's religion?

The answer to this question has not yet been found. However, a group of people is trying to help the

tribe to learn to communicate with the rest of the world. Cultural Survival, Inc. is the name of the group. The

people are anthropologists, scientists who study cultures. They want to help small, separate societies live

successfully within the larger society. Cultural Survival, Inc. wants to help these groups keep the idea of who

they are and to teach them how to live in the modern world.

There is another organization like this in London. It is called Survival International. One in Copenhagen

is called the International Workshop for Indigenous Affairs. These two groups have joined with Cultural

Survival, Inc. , to help people become used to modern culture.

These organizations work with another kind of problem, too. Sometimes a central government does not

consider the needs of local people. Often the rich people of a country will get more from a new project than

the working people. The poorer people sometimes suffer even more because of these projects. One

thoughtless government leader moved the people out of a very large area. He wanted to set up a special

vegetable business. He wanted something to sell to earn money from other countries. About 50,000 people

were forced off their native land. These people suffered a great loss because they had to leave their homes.

Cultural Survival, Inc. helped them.

Cultural Survival, Inc. and its sister organizations also give advice about tourism. The tourism business

can cause problems. Many small societies need to earn money, but a large group of visitors can hurt their

culture. The Sherpas of Nepal are a good example. The beauty 'of the Himalayan Mountains brings many

mountain climbers from all over the world. However, the tourists leave tin cans and other garbage. What the

tourists leave behind in this beautiful area is making a garbage dump. The mountain climbers are also cutting

down trees for their fires. This area has few trees, and the Sherpas need the wood for their uses. The Sherpas, it is clear, could use the help of Cultural Survival, Incorporated.

11. It can be inferred from paragraph 2 that

A. the economy of the native tribe develops rapidly.

B. the tribe is good at mining copper.

C. there is a problem that holds the tribe back from developing.

D. copper is a necessary part of the tribe's building.

12. What does Cultural Survival, Inc. want to do?

A. Teach isolated societies to live a modern life without losing their cultural identity.

B. Make small tribes become a necessary part of large societies.

C. Force backward tribes to accept the cultures of the modern world.

D. Help the isolated tribes hold onto their fixed ideas.

13. What is the aim of Cultural Survival, Inc. and its sister organizations?

A. To teach people how to communicate with the outside world.

B. To study the cultures of the modem world and some other societies.

C. To help small and isolated tribes adapt to the modern world.

D. To separate some societies from the modern world.

`14. According to paragraph 5, we can infer that

A. the local people have suffered a lot because of a new project.

B. the rich people have helped the local people set up a special business.

C. by leaving their homes, the local people can get much benefit.

D. to obtain profits, a thoughtless government made the local people suffer great loss.

15. Which of the following can serve as the best title for this passage?

A. Modern World and Small Cultural Groups

B. Native Tribes and Technological World

C. Cultural Survival, Inc. and Native Tribes

D. Environmental Protection and Tourism

Unit 6 I. Background to Text 1 Family is considered to be the “cell” of society. It is a group of people related to each other by blood or by marriage. There are extended families—a large group of relations living together or in close contact with each other. In such a family, usually several generations live under the same roof, including grandparents. On the other hand, there are “nuclear” families, consisting of parents and children. In some societies an extended family consists of a large group of people of different generations closely or distantly related, depending on each other for economic support and security. In others, even nuclear families can be very large with many children. In different countries, there are different policies for family size, and people take different attitude towards it. For instance, in some developed countries, people tend to marry late and have fewer children. Some governments have to give incentives to encourage births. However, in some developing countries, where people tend to have more children and population is growing so fast that it hinders the economic development and keeps the living standard low, governments are forced to formulate policies to limit family size. Of course, people still do not agree as to the matter of family size because there are a lot of factors involved such as economy, religion, cultural tradition, education and even politics. There are indeed advantages and disadvantages to have a number of brothers or sisters. This text is a narration of the experience by a young woman who was brought up with six other brothers or sisters. In her opinion, having a big family is a bad thing, for there is always competition among the brothers and sisters for things. They fight for better beds, for better places to watch TV, for own favourite TV programmes and for parents? care. They have no privacy, no peace and quiet because of too many friends (each has friends of their own) and pets and so on. For parents,
