It's early June in the mountains of North Wales. Groups of fell runners are getting ready to start a 48 hour race. Although the weather isn't good, the runners do not seem to care. They begin the race in pairs. They carry a tent, sleeping bag and food. They also have a map and compass (指南针).

I stood there listening to the harsh words of my father. "Which one of you did this?" he asked with a sharp voice.

When someone drops some food on the floor and still wants to eat it, he or she may be reminded of the 5-second rule. This rule says food is OK to eat if you pick it up in 5 seconds or less. A clean-looking floor isn't necessarily clean. A floor that looks dirty is usually worse, but even dry floors that look clean can contain bacteria(细菌). Why? Some bacteria can survive on the floor for a long time. And unless you have a microscope (显微镜), you can't check to see how many bacteria there are. So chances are some bacteria are probably living on your kitchen floor.
Faster is better. The longer food stays on the floor, the more bacteria it will pick up. So food left there for 5 seconds or less will probably collect fewer bacteria than food staying there for a longer time. Bacteria can attach to your food as soon as it hits the floor. That means food left on the floor for an instant can get contaminated if conditions are right. And foods with wet surfaces, like ice cream, can pick up bacteria more easily.
When in doubt, throw it away. Some bacteria are not harmful, b ut others can make you ill. Y ou can't see bacteria and, even if you could, it doesn't take much to make you sick. So what are you to do with that delicious food that has just dropped from your plate? The safest choice is to throw it away.
