Human beings live in the realm of nature. They are not only dwellers in nature, but also transformers of it. With the development of society and its economy, people tend to become less dependent on nature directly, but indirectly their dependence grows.

Human beings are connected with natu re by “blood” ties. No one can live outside nature. However, the previous dynamic balance between man and nature has shown signs of breaking down. Problems such as the population explosion, ecological imbalance and the shortage of natural resources have become major factors keeping human society from being further developed.

Professor Spirkin holds that the only choice for human beings is the wise organization of production and care for Mother Nature.

Many people want to be famous because fame can bring them both honor and respect from the public. In most cases, fame can also help them gain wealth. But, after

all, very few people can really become famous while most people, including most artists, are unlikely to become famous.

It is true that some failure for some people at certain times in their lives does motivate them to strive even harder so as to achieve final success. For example, Thomas Edison, the famous American inventor, had tried hundreds of materials before he finally found the suitable fuse for the electric bulb. However, unfortunately, for most people failure is the end of their struggle.

Therefore, in my opinion, success is one thing and fame is another. As long as you have tried your best, you’re already successful whether you a re famous or not.

他们把两份全职工作换成了两份兼职工作,努力缩减消费。他们卖掉了他们原有的那幢富丽堂皇的房子,搬进了自己亲手设计的、既漂亮又节能的小住宅。他们减缩了家当,把那些昂贵但长期闲置的杂物都处理掉了。他们还卖掉了那艘大船,和另一家人共享一艘小船,照样能享受海上航行的乐趣。他们处理了一辆多余的汽车和职业装,也放弃了一些昂贵的嗜好;

Sara and Michael used to be a two-career couple with a home of their own, two cars and a large boat bought with a large loan. They were both busy with their respective work and sometimes they had to make business trips at weekend. The only time for their so-called home life was restricted to the few hours after work. Indeed, they had made a lot of money, but they got fed up with such a fast-paced lifestyle. So soon after their daughter was born, they decided to change their lifestyles.

They traded their two full-time careers for two part-time jobs, and tried hard to curtail their consumption. They sold their splendid house and moved into a smaller but pretty and energy-efficient home designed by themselves. They downsized their possessions and discarded all the expensive clutter. They also sold their big boat and shared a smaller one with another family so that they could still enjoy sailing on the sea. They gave up the extra car and their professional wardrobes. They also gave up expensive hobbies. They seldom ate out, thereby reducing a lot of expenses. Now they no longer purchase things on impulse and only spend money on the bare necessities.

One may think that they are too stingy toward themselves. But that is not the case. For them it is a voluntary act to have chosen this simple and frugal lifestyle. It is by no means deprivation. They believe that a frugal life is beneficial to both society and the individual.

Lin Yutang was a famous man of letters in modern China. In his The Art of Reading, he tells us that reading gives a man a certain charm and flavor and only those who read with this object in mind can understand what is meant by the art of reading. When one begins to think of improving his mind, all the pleasure of reading is gone.

Lin Yutang holds that there are no books that one absolutely must read. Even if there is a certain book that everyone must read, there is a given time for it. When

one’s thoughts and experience have not reached a certain point for reading a classic, the book will leave only a bad flavor on his palate if he forces himself to read it. He also believes that although there are no books in this world that everybody must read, there are books that a person must read at a certain time, in a given place, under given circumstances, and at a given period of his life.

To him, reading is an act consisting of two sides, the author and the reader. The net gain comes as much from th e reader’s contribution through his own insight and experience as from the author’s own. Therefore, Lin Yutang believes that the discovery of a reader’s favorite author is the most critical event in his intellectual development.

After a while the Dutchmen saw that the two Belgians only had one ticket between them and asked how they managed to achieve this. The Belgians explained that when they heard the conductor approaching from the other end of the carriage, the two of them left their seats, went into the toilet and locked the door. When the conductor knocked on the toilet door, saying, "Tickets, please!", they pushed one ticket under the door. It was then stamped and pushed back under the door again. The Dutchmen thought this was a very good idea and the following morning bought one ticket between them. When they got to their carriage there was only one Belgian. They told him what they had done and asked the Belgian if he had a ticket as he was traveling on his own. The Belgian said he did not have a ticket at all and when they asked how he proposed to manage to travel free of charge, he told them they would have to wait and see until the conductor arrived, but he had no doubt that he would manage it without difficulty. Life in the United States was much more difficult than I had ever imagined. It wasn't like the descriptions I had read in my textbooks. People often seemed tense and so I felt very alone. One of my hardest classes was physical education. We often played volleyball. All the other students were good at it, but I clearly wasn't. One afternoon, the teacher asked me to hit the ball to my classmates. For most people, this would be easy but I was terrified that I would make a fool of myself. When one of the boys on my team saw how nervous I was, he walked up to me and whispered, "Come on, you can do that." You can't imagine how those words of encouragement made me feel. I was so happy that I almost cried. I managed to hit the ball and I think I thanked the young man, but I'm not sure. I have never forgotten his kind words of encouragement. He probably doesn't even remember what he said to me or how much his kindness meant to me. Whenever things aren't going well, I think of those simple words of encouragement: Come on, you can do that.

Many people enjoy Chinese food. Directions: For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to translate a passage from Chinese into English. You should write your answer on Answer Sheet 2. Traditional Chinese holiday meals are indispensable on some festivals. For example, the Dragon Boat Festival is a day established in memory of the ancient poet Qu Yuan and people usually hold dragon boat races and eat zongzi, or rice dumpling on that day. The Mid-autumn Festival is an occasion for viewing the full moon. The round moon is a symbol for completeness and family reunion. The special food of the day is yuebing, a round cake known as the mooncake. The Spring Festival is the Chinese lunar New Year?s holiday. Besides the popular poultry and meat, people cook traditional food according to regional customs, for example, jiaozi, or boiled dumplings, and niangao, or the new year cake. 2.纪念:翻译为介词短语in memory of,修饰前面的a day。 ■ 3. 5.象征着家庭团聚:“象征”翻译为系表结构is a symbol for,也可以用动词symbolize表示,“家庭团聚”翻译:为family reunion 即可。

‖我们知道上了年纪的人往往耳背,因此会把Wembley(温布利)听成了Wednesday(星期三),把Thursday(星期四)听成了thirsty(渴了),这样一来就为第三位老人的妙语做好了铺垫。 V ocabulary 1. 1) A. entertaining B. entertainment C. entertained D. entertainer 2) A. recognizable B. recognized C. recognition 尔夫。
