A lot of earthquakes happen in the world every year. Why do earthquakes happen? Scientists tell us the outside of the earth is made of a number of different plates (板块). The plates move very slowly. Sometimes they stop and don’t move for a long time. When some of the earth’s plates move suddenly, an earthquake happens.

Many earthquakes happen under the sea. Sometimes they happen near mountains. In fact, earthquakes may happen anywhere on the earth.

During an earthquake, the shakings make rocks rise suddenly and even break open. Houses fall. People are killed or hurt. Sometimes whole villages or cities are destroyed.

Can we do something to keep ourselves safe from earthquakes? Scientists have studied earthquakes and made maps that show“earthquake belts”. In the areas in these belts, it’s possible for earthquakes to happen. In these areas we can make houses strong enough to stand against earthquakes.

In the future, scientists will be able to predict (预言) exactly when and where an earthquake will happen. They can tell us what to do and how to do it as well.

Computers don't forget information they are given, but humans often do. No one remembers everything, and luckily we don't usually have to. But everyone can improve their memory if they want to. Here are some suggestions.

Different weather makes people feel different. It influences health, intelligence(智力) and feelings.

In August, it is very hot and wet in the southern part of the United States. People there have heart trouble and other kinds of health problems during this month. In the Northeast and the Middle West, it is very hot at some times and very cold at other times. People in these states(州) have more heart trouble after the weather changes in February or March.

The weather can also influence intelligence. For example, in a 1983 report by scientists, IQ(智商) of a group of students was very high when a very strong wind came, but after the strong wind, their IQ was 10% lower. The wind can help people have more intelligence. Very hot weather, on the other hand, can make it lower. Students in many schools of the United States often get worse on exams in the hot months of the year (July and August).

Weather also has a strong influence on people’s feelings. Winter may be a bad time for thin people. They usually feel cold during these months. They might feel unhappy during cold weather. But fat people may have a hard time in hot summer. At about 18℃, people become stronger.

Low air pressure(气压) may make people forgetful(健忘). People leave more bags on buses and in shops on low-pressure days. People feel best at a temperature of about 18℃.

Lightning(闪电)is shocking, and it happens all over the world! Scientists think that there are more than three million lightning strikes(袭击)every day in the world-that’s thirty strikes every second. Lightning can also be very dangerous. Every year, lightning kills people because it can start big fires or because it reaches temperatures up to 28,000 degrees centigrade. American Roy Sullivan, who worked in a park, holds the record for surviving the most lightning strikes. Between 1942 and 1983, he was hit seven times!

So, why does lightning strike? Lightning strikes happen when ice and water in clouds rub(摩擦)together, and cause atmospheric(大气层的)changes. When this happens, it creates a static charge(静电电荷). Lightning can strike inside the cloud, between two clouds and between a cloud and Earth. It’s the last type of strike that is the most dangerous for humans. About 1,000 people get struck by lightning every year in the United States, and about 100 of them die as a result.

Lightning is certainly not something to toy with. When lightning strikes, it’s best to stay inside a large building. To stay safe, do not stand under trees, on hills or near water. Trees attract lightning. Also, do not lie down on the ground, otherwise the electricity may go through you and cause a heart disease.

It is true that people with better education are usually able to get better paying jobs. In other words, they have more chances to choose a good job while people with little or no education don’t. It seems that the purpose of education is to make people get jobs. But this isn’t accepted by all people.

Some people may think that a person should spend the best years of his life to get education only for a way of living. This was probably one of the earliest reasons of education. In fact, if education is just a way of making a living, people do n’t need to spend so much time in school. People can get education for a living in a short time. Subjects like history and geography need not be taught to everyone. Even language and mathematics need not be taught in detail (详细地),either. Here it is clear that education is much more than teaching a man to get a way of living.

Education is well-rounded and it is mainly for improving a man. It is not only to teach him to speak, read and write, but also to develop his creative thinking and other abilities. After that, it is to make him a wise man and thankfully enjoy the achievements of human. Education is to make a man lead a better life. Educated people are expected to be able to listen to good music, read good books, watch plays and most of all take an interest in the world.

I would agree that making a good living is an important reason for education, but certainly not the most important or the main reason.

Hold your head up high I was 15 months old, a happy and carefree kid, until the day I fell. It was a bad fall. I landed on a piece of glass that cut my eye badly. from then on, my injured, sightless, cloudy gray eye lived on with me.

Sometimes people asked me embarrassing(使人难堪的)questions. Whenever kids played games, I was the "monster". I was always imagining that everyone looked down on(瞧不起)me.

Let them see the beauty that is inside instead of your appearance(外貌).”

My mum's love was the sunshine that made me bright. I had faced hard times, and learned not only to be confident(自信的)but also to have deep compassion(同情)for others.

Dolphins (海豚) are not fish. They are mammals (哺乳动物). They live in groups and speak to each other in their own language. But they aren’t the same as almost all land animals. Their brains are as big as men's and they live a long life一at least 20 or 30 years.

Like some animals, dolphins use some sounds to help them find their ways around. They also use sounds to talk to each other and to help them find food. They don’t use their ears to receive sounds, but use the jaws (下颚).

It’s strange that dolphins are friendl y to men, and for thousands of years, there are many stories about dolphins and men. In the 19th century, in a dangerous part of the sea near New Zealand, there was a dolphin. The seamen liked him very much and gave him a very good name, Jack. From 1871 to 1903, Jack met every boat in the area and showed it the way. In 1903, a passenger on a boat with the name of “The Penguin” shot and hurt Jack. Luckily the dolphin didn’t die, and after a long time he was well again. He guided the ships through the area for nine more years, but he refused to help the boat “The Penguin”.

Today, some people still kill dolphins, but more people in the world protect them.

Almost every Chinese person can recite the two lines of the famous poem, “Every grain on the plate comes from hard work(谁知盘中餐,粒粒皆辛苦).”But sadly, many of us don’t actually get the real meaning of these lines: Don’t waste food.

A CCTV program,News One Plus One, reported that the food Chinese people throw away every year is enough to feed 200million people for a year.

What do see when you look at abstract(抽象) art?Does it make sense to you? Does it look like anything? Is it supposed to?

Abstract art became popular in the early 20th century. Artists did not want to paint, draw, or sculpt things exactly(确切地) like they looked. They didn’t want their art to be realistic. They were more interested in basic shapes and colours.

Picasso is probably the most famous of these artists. He painted and drew in many, many styles. Sometimes he used a lot of blue colours(his “blue period”). Later, he used more red and pink colours (his “rose period”). Many of his other paintings are ca lled “cubist(立体画派)”because they are made of painted squares.

After a long time, Picasso’s paintings became more and more abstract. He painted people and things using strange shapes. His work was so original; many of his fellow artists didn’t understand it.

Kandinsky, another famous artist, used lines, shapes, and patterns to paint his subjects. His paintings also used strong colours to express feelings.

Other artist like the surrealists(超现实主义者),were interested in subconscious(潜意识). Painters like Breton and Magritte used many symbol in their work. The meaning or subject of their work wasn't always clear. Dali, another surrealist artist, painted pictures that look like dreams.

Life is full of surprises and you never know how things will turn out.

Sir John Gurdon is a good example of this. As a boy, he was told he was hopeless at science and finished bottom of his class. Now, aged 79, the very same Gurdon shared the 2012 Nobel Prize in Medicine with Japanese stem cell(干细胞) researcher Shinya Yamanaka.

Like so many scientists, Gurdon shows us where the power of curiosity and perseverance(坚持不懈) can lead.

At the age of 15 in 1948, Gurdon ranked last out of the 250 boys at his high school in biology and every other science subject. Gurdon’s high school science teacher even said that his dream of becoming a scientist was “quite ridiculous”.

In spite of his teacher’s criticisms, Gurdon followed his curiosity and kept working hard. He went to the lab early and left later than anyone else. He experienced thousands of failures.

“My own belief is that we will, in the end , understand everything about how cells actually work., ” Gurdon said.

In 1962, Gurdon took a cell from an adult frog and moved its genetic(基因的) information into an egg cell. The egg cell then grew into a clone(克隆) of the adult frog. This technique later helped to create Dolly the sheep in 1996, the first cloned mammal(哺乳动物) in the world.

In 2006, Gurdon’s work was developed by Yamanaka to show that a sample (样本) of a person’s skin can be used to create stem cells. Using the technique, doctors can repair a patient’s heart after a heart attack.

2019年中考英语阅读理解专项训练及答案:勇气与坚持

2019年中考英语阅读理解专项训练及答案:勇气与坚持 各位读友大家好,此文档由网络收集而来,欢迎您下载,谢谢 In the 1950s, a female swimming athlete set a goal for herself. She decided to swim across the English Channel before she retired. If she could make it, she would be the first person in the world who did it. On that day, she jumped into the sea without any hesitation and swam towards the opposite bank. In the journey, she faced heavy fog, heavy rain and heavy waves. Though she was very tired, she carried on swimming. But in the end, she gave up. And what she didn’t know at the moment she gave up was that the opposite bank was only I mile away.

Later people asked her about the reason. And she said: “The reason why I gave up is that I could not see the destination which I was so close to.” Too many success stories have been lecturing us about courage and persistence. But they never told us where to find courage and persistence. You can have courage only when you know where your goal is. You can manage to persist only when you know where your goal is, and prepare yourself well mentally. Courage and persistence never fall from the sky. They come from weighing between input and output. A life without goals is like a ship without a compass. It goes nowhere. There is no courage or persistence in a life without goals.

【思路点拨】先求出一元二次方程x2-5x+6=0的两个根x1和x2,然后分情况讨论两个根与a,b 的对应关系,再根据新定义的运算:当a ≥b 时,a*b=a2-ab ,当a <b 时,a*b=ab -b2, 计算x1*x2的值. 22a ab,a b,ab b ,a b,?≥??
