Started in 1636, Harvard University is the oldest of all the colleges and universities in the United States. Yale, Princeton, Columbia and Dartmouth were opened soon after Harvard.

Little was known about science. And few people knew that one kind of school could teach everything that was known about the world. When the students graduated, most of them became ministers(牧师) or teachers.

In 1782, Harvard started a medical school for young men who wanted to become doctors. Later, lawyer could study in Harvard’s law school. In 1825, besides Latin and Greek, Harvard began to teach modern languages, such as French and German. Soon it began to teach American history.

As knowledge increased, Harvard and other colleges began to teach many new subjects. Students were allowed to choose the subjects that interested them.

Maybe you have seen this in schools: some students are studying nearly all the time but they just pass their exams, while some others may spend much less time on their books but do much better in exams. How could this happen? People used to think that hard work is the only way to success, but now they have understood that smart work can make them succeed, too.

Hard workers don’t mind working for long hours, while smart workers always think of several different answers to these questions, “Why should I suffer this?” “Isn’t there a better way to do this?” Thanks to these people, we can use computers instead of the abacus(算盘) now. Progress in every field is the direct result of “try t o find a better way” by smart workers.

There was a large soap factory in Japan. Once it received an unusual letter from someone who complained that there was no soap in the soapbox he bought.

How could empty soapboxes go out of the factory? The engineers checked the producing

and packing. The producing was fine, but in about one in ten thousand cases, the packing machine let an empty soapbox go. There was no need to spend a lot of money repairing the machine for such a small problem. The engineer put a huge X-ray machine and two large computers to find out the empty soapboxes. After teaching the workers how to use it, he sat down in his seat, exhausted(筋疲力尽).

“Sir, we could have solved the problems in a much simpler and cheaper way,” a worker said.

“Really?How?”

“We can put a huge fan near the packing machine. The wind coming from the fan will blow away the empty boxes, leaving the other boxes with soap. There would be no need for an X-ray machine, two computers, and operating by workers.”

See, this is smart work. In order to succeed, we should not only work hard like the engineer, but also think smartly like this worker.

48. Some students spend much less time on schoolwork but do much better in exams .

A. because of their hard work

B. because of different education

C. because they study for a much longer time

D. because they try to find a better way

49. The soap factory could only_______ near the packing machine to solve the

problems in a much simpler and cheaper way.

A. set some soapboxes

B. set an X-ray machine

C. put a huge fan

D. put two large computers

50. The underlined phrase“blow away” here in Chinese means“_______”.

A. 停止

B. 远离

C. 吹走

D. 逃脱

51.The article mainly tells us that we should _______ in order to succeed.

A.think of different answers to our questions

B. spend much less time on our school work

C. spend enough money repairing the machine for any problem

D. work hard like the engineer and think smartly like the worker

A. It is sometimes the only way to pay when you shop over the Int

B. You'd better borrow money from friends instead of using a cred

C. Using a credit card is a way of borrowing money to buy things.

D. Some people get themselves in trouble with credit cards.

E. If you pay the whole 45 dollars back right away, it won't cost yo

anything.

D

根据短文内容,从下列选项中选出能填入文中空白处的最佳选项。选项中有一项为多余选项。 You arrive at the mall, anxious to buy your favorite CD or the coolest computer

game. Nothing will stop you, not even the price — even if you don't

have enough money, Mom or Dad will use a credit card(信用卡) to

pay. But wait! Is using a credit card really that simple? There

are some things you should know about using credit cards before

you go shopping. 52. Credit card companies lend you money, which you are expected to pay back. They don’t lend you money just to be nice, however. In fact, they make billions of dollars this way.

You spend 45 dollars buying a pair of jeans on a credit card, then about a month later, the credit company sends you a bill for 45 dollars. 53. But what if you can’t pay the whole bill? Usually, you are allowed to pay part of it. Let’s say you pay $10 the first month. Now the credit card company begins to get money from you. They charge extra money, called interest(利息), on whatever part of the money you didn't pay.

Now the $35 you still have on your bill begins to grow. Even if you don’t buy anything more, by the time you get your bill the following month, you will have more than $35 to need paying back. And every day, interest keeps adding up. So actually those jeans will end up costing you more than $ 45. But the good news is that a credit card is convenient. 54. Besides, the credit card companies also offer extra services. For example, if something you bought online with your card stops working in a short time, the company may give your money back. 55. They spend more money than they can afford to pay back. Knowing how to use credit wisely will be necessary and help you to be a smart shopper.

六、阅读表达(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)

阅读下面短文,并根据短文后的要求答题。

The people who are more successful are not special people. They are just ordinary people like you and me, but the only difference is that they have the passion(热情) for their

ambitions. They often put themselves in an uncomfortable environment and work to reach a comfortable environment. This helps in increasing the self-confidence. We need to start challenging (挑战) ourselves to do something that we have never done before. Small little challenges to oneself will give confidence for bigger things in life.

This makes me think of a friend of mine. Because of some reason she lived in her own old house and had lost all her self-confidence. She tried to die but was saved by a doctor. The doctor helped her come out of the sadness. He told her, “God has given you intelligence and you are gifted with creativity. Why don’t you work in a mazine? I am sure you will do very well.” She took the challenge. She started looking for a job as an artist in magazines. She got a job soon as an artist in a local magazine. Her life has changed since then. She had challenged herself to do something, which she had never dreamt of being able to do, and never thought she could do it _______ she secretly wished in her heart.

We are all like my friend, but we are afraid to challenge ourselves. Challenge yourself day after day,and you will start believing in yourself.

A few weeks later, Joe went to the office and asked for a job there. A man took him into a small room and gave him a piece of paper with some questions. Joe answered the questions quickly and handed the paper to the man. The man read the paper for a few minutes and then asked, “Your birthday is on September 23rd, but what year?” Joe answered, “Oh, every year.”
