A

In July 1994 Jupiter, the largest planet in our solar system, was struck by 21 pieces of a comet(彗星). When the fragments(碎片)landed in the southern part of the grand planet, the explosions were watched by scientists here on earth. But what if our own planet was hit by a comet?

The year is 2094. It had been announced that a comet is heading towards the earth. Most of it will miss our planet, but two fragments will probably hit the southern part of the earth. The news has caused panic.

On 17 July, a fragment four kilometers wide enters the Earth's atmosphere with a huge explosion. About half of the fragment is destroyed. But the major part survives and hits the South Atlantic at 200 times the spend of sound. The sea boils and an enormous wave is created and spreads. The wall of water rushes towards southern Africa at 800 kilometres an hour. Cities on the African coast are totally destroyed and million of people are drowned. The wave moves into the Indian Ocean and heads towards Asia.

Millions of people are already dead in the southern part of the earth, but the north won't escape for long. Tons of broken pieces are thrown into the atmosphere by the explosion. As the sun is hidden by clouds of dust, temperatures around the world fall to almost zero. Crops are ruined. Wars break out as countries fight for food. A year later civilization has collapsed. No more than 10 million people have survived.

Could it really happen? It has already happened more than once in the history of the earth. The dinosaur were on the Earth for over 160 million years. Then 65 million years ago they suddenly disappeared. Many scientists believe that the Earth was hit by a space fragment. The dinosaurs couldn't survive in the cold climate that followed and they became extinct. Will we meet the same end?

36.Which of the following is NOT true according to the author's description of the disaster in 2094?

A.The whole world becomes extremely cold.

B.All the coastal cities in Africa are destroyed.

C.The whole mankind becomes extinct.

D.The visit of the comet results in wars.

文中“No more than 10 million people have survived”一句意为“只有一千万人幸存下来”,而C项说全人类都灭绝了。

37.Why does the author mention dinosaurs at the end of the passage?

A.Because they could only live in the warm climate.

B.Because they once dominated the earth.

C.Because their extinction indicates future disasters.

D.Because dinosaurs and humans never live in the same age.

38.In writing the passage, the author intends to________.

A.give an accurate description of the possible disaster in the future

B.prove that humans will sooner or later be destroyed

C.tell the historical development of the earth

D.warn of a possible disaster in the future

39.It can be concluded that the passage is most probably part of a(n)________.

A.horror story

B.news report

C.research paper

D.article of popular science

B

(2014·山西省大同高一下学期期中) Satellites are an important part of our ordinary lives. For example, the information for weather forecasts is sent by satellite. Some satellites have cameras which take photographs of the Earth to show how clouds are moving. Satellites are also used to connect our international phone calls.

Computer connections of the World Wide Web and Internet also use satellites. Many of our TV programs come to us through satellites. Airplane pilots also sometimes use a satellite to help them find their exact location.

We use satellites to send television pictures from one part of the world to another. They are usually 35, 880 kilometers above the equator. Sometimes we can see a satellite in the sky and it seems to stay in the same place. This is because it is moving around the world at 11,000 kilometers an hour—exactly the same speed that the earth rotates. A satellite must orbit the Earth with its antennae (天线) facing the earth. Sometimes, it moves away from its orbit. So there are little rockets on it which are used to put the satellite back in the right position. This usually happens about every five or six days.

Space is not empty! Every week, more and more satellites are sent into space to orbit the Earth. A satellite usually works for about 10-12 years. Satellites which are broken are sometimes repaired by astronauts or sometimes brought back to Earth to be repaired. Often, very old or broken satellites are left in space to orbit the Earth for a very long time. This is very serious because some satellites use nuclear power and they can crash into each other.

40.Which of the following is NOT done by satellites according to the passage?

A.Sending information for weather forecast.

B.Taking photographs of the Earth.

C.Sending TV pictures.

D.Providing food for airplane pilots.

41.What's the speed the earth rotates at?

A.35,880 kilometers per hour.

B.335,880 kilometers per hour.

C.11,000 kilometers per hour.

D.110,000 kilometers per hour.

This is because it is moving around the world at 11,000 kilometers an hour—exactly the same speed that the earth rotates.

42.What does the underlined word “This” in the 3rd paragraph refer to?

A.A satellite.

B.A little rocket.

C.A satellite seems to stay in the same place in the sky.

D.The satellite puts the rockets in the right position.

43.Which is true of satellites?

A.A satellite usually works for about 10-12 years.

B.Every time a satellite gets broken, it is brought back to the Earth to be repaired.

C.A broken satellite is never left in space.

D.They often crash into each other.

C

Brian arrived at the San Francisco airport two hours before

the flight to Paris. He was wearing three shirts, a jacket, two

pairs of socks,a pair of shorts, and two pairs of jeans. He was carrying one

small backpack, which was very full, but he didn't have any other luggage.

Brian needed to meet a man named Tony before he checked in for his flight. He found Tony near the Air France counter. Tony gave him a round-trip ticket and a small package.

“Give this package to Jean Paul at the airport in Paris. He will have a sign with your name on it. I think you can find him easily,” Tony said,“You don't have any luggage, right?”

“Only this backpack,” Brian answered,“You said I could bring one carry-on bag.”

“That's right. One carry-on bag is fine. Have a good trip.”

“Thanks.”

Is Brian a criminal? Not at all. He is an air-courier. And he paid only $ 110 for the round-trip ticket to Paris. Air-couriers get cheap airline tickets because they take important packages and papers to foreign countries. Businesses sometimes need to get packages and papers to people in foreign countries by the next day. Often, the only way they can do this is to use an aircourier company. It is not cheap for a business to send a package with an air-courier,but it is quick.

Every year about 80,000 people worldwide travel as aircouriers. The number of tickets for courier travel is growing by about 10 percent a year. However, air-courier travel isn't for everyone. But if you have very little money, can be flexible about your travel plans, and don't mind wearing the same clothes for a week,it can be a great way to take a vacation!

44.Why was Brian wearing so many clothes for his travel?

A.Because they were the uniforms for air-couriers.

B.Because that made him easier to be recognized.

C.Because he would be charged for taking much luggage with him.

D.Because he was required not to have much luggage with him.

由第三段“Only this backpack,” Brian answered, “You said I could bring one carry-on bag.”

45.Who was Tony?

A.He might be an air-courier company clerk.

B.He might be a guard at the airport.

C.He might be Brian's friend.

D.He might be a customs official.

根据第一段中“Tony gave him a round-trip ticket and a small package.

46.Businesses choose the air-courier service because ________.

A.it costs less B.it is flexible

C.it grows fast D.it saves time

从倒数第二段最后一句“It is not cheap for a business to send a package with an air-courier,but it is quick.

47.Air-courier travel is a good choice for those who ______.

A.have much money

B.hate wearing the same clothes

C.have much personal luggage

D.are flexible about their travel plans

D

The journey to the moon has been the first step towards future exploration in space. The distance between the Moon and Earth is very short indeed when compared with the distances between Earth and the other planets. Mars, the nearest planet to Earth is millions of miles away! Traveling to the planets will be man's next aim. Such travels will be more challenging than the trip to the moon and certainly more adventurous.

Recently, two American spaceships, Vikings 1 and 2, landed on Mars trying to discover whether that planet has any life on it. So far the signs of life on Mars has neither confirmed(确认)nor ruled

out. Russians have discovered that the surface of Venus(金星)is so hot that it is almost certain that there is no life there. Also the atmosphere of Venus is extremely dense(稠)and the pressure is nearly a hundred times greater than that of the Earth's atmosphere.

Scientists believe man may find planets which have the same conditions as those we have on earth, but man should realize Earth will be his only home for a long time and begin to love and care for it.

48.According to the passage, traveling to the planets will be________.

A.much easier and even more interesting

B.far more exciting and dangerous

C.man's final aim

D.man's first step

49.From the passage, we can guess________.

A.there is life on Mars

B.there is no life on Mars

C.The atmosphere of Mars is not so dense as that of Venus

D.scientists will have little hope to find the answers

50.Scientists think we should take care of our earth because________.

A.no other planets are to take the place of the earth

B.everything needed is provided by the earth

C.the only home of man will be the earth for a long time

D.the dream to find another home for man will come true

(2013·天津) Last night's meteor(流星) shower left many people in the community dissatisfied and demanding answers. According to Gabe Rothschild, Emerald Valley's mayor, people gathered in the suburbs of the city, carrying heavy telescopes, expecting to watch the brightly burning meteors passing through the sky. What they found instead was a sky so brightened by the city's lights that it

darkened the light of the meteors passing overhead.

“My family was so frustrated,”admitted town resident Duane Cosby, “We wanted to make this an unforgettable family outing, but it turned out to b e a huge disappointment.”

Astronomers—scientists who study stars and planets—have been complaining about this problem for decades. They say that light pollution prevents them from seeing objects in the sky that they could see quite easily in the past. They call on people and the government to take measures to fight against it.

There is yet a population besides professional and amateur star observers that suffers even more from light pollution. This population consists of birds, bats, frogs, snakes, etc. For example, outdoor lighting severely affects migrating(迁徙的)birds. According to the International Dark-Sky Association. “100 million birds a year throughout North America die in crashes with lighted buildings and towers.”

Countless more animals casualties(伤亡)result from the use of artificial lighting. Clearly, people enjoy the benefits of lighting their evenings, but some scientists think it can be harmful for humans, too. They worry that exposure to light while sleeping can increase a person's chances of getting cancer.

Emerald Valley is only one community that is becoming aware of the negative effects of light pollution. For years, Flagstaff, Arizona, has enforced lighting regulations in its city in order to assist astronomers at the Lowell Observatory. Similar efforts have been made worldwide, and a movement is underway to remind us to turn off lights when we are not using them, so that other creatures can share the night.

A.the city's lights affected the meteor watching

B.the meteors flew past before being noticed

C.the city light show attracted many people

D.the meteor watching ended up a social outing

故选A 项。

52.What do the astronomers complain about?

A.Meteor showers occur less often than before.

B.Their observation equipment is in poor repair.

C.Light pollution has remained unsolved for years.

D.Their eyesight is failing due to artificial lighting.

53.What the author concerned about according to Paragraph 4?

A.Birds may take other migration paths.

B.Animal's living habits may change suddenly.

C.Varieties of animals will become sharply reduced.

D.Animals' survival is threatened by outdoor lighting.

54.Lighting regulations in Flagstaff, Arizona are put into effect to ________.

A.lessen the chance of getting cancer

B.create an ideal observation condition

C.ensure citizens a good sleep at night

D.enable all creatures to live in harmony

55.What message does the author most want to give us?

A.Saving wildlife is saving ourselves.

B.Great efforts should be made to save energy.

C.Human activities should be environmentally friendly.

D.New equipment should be introduced for space study.

Book 3 Unit 1 Festivals around the world B3U1P1-3 FESTIV ALS AND CELEBRATIONS Ancient Festivals Festivals and celebrations of all kinds are held everywhere. The most ancient festivals would celebrate the end of the cold weather, planting in spring and harvest in autumn. Other celebrations were held when hunters could catch animals. They would starve if food was difficult to find, so they celebrated when they had food. They lit fires and made music because they thought these festivals would bring a year of plenty. Festivals of the Dead Some festivals are held to honour the dead, or satisfy and please the ancestors, who could return either to help or to do harm. In Japan the festival is called Obon, when people should go to clean the graves and light incense in memory of their ancestors. They light lamps and play music because they think that this will lead the ancestors back to earth. In Mexico they have the Day of the Dead in early November. On this important feast day, people might eat food in shape of skulls, and cakes with “bones” on them. They offer food, flowers and gifts to the dead. The festival of Halloween had its origin as an event in memory of the dead. It is now a children’s festival, when they can go to their neighbours’ homes and ask for sweets. They dress up and try to frighten people. If they are not given anything, the children might play a trick. Festivals to Honour People Festivals can be held as an honour to famous people or to the gods. One of these is the Dragon Boat Festival in China, which honours the famous ancient poet, Qu Yuan. Another is Columbus Day in the USA, in memory of the arrival of Christopher Columbus in America. In India there is a national festival on October 2 to honour Mahatma Gandhi, the leader who helped gain India’s independence from Britain. Harvest Festivals Harvest and Thanksgiving festivals can be very happy events. People are grateful because their food is gathered for the winter ,and because a season of agricultural work is over. In European countries it is the custom to decorate churches and town halls with flowers and fruit, and people get together to have meals. Some people might win awards for their animals, flowers, fruits and vegetables, like the biggest watermelon or the most handsome rooster. In China and Japan there are mid-autumn festivals, when people admire the moon and give gift of mooncakes. Spring Festivals The most energetic and important festivals are the ones that look forward to the end of winter and to the coming of spring. At the Spring Festival in China, people eat dumplings, fish and meat, and may give children lucky money in the red paper. There are dragon dances and carnivals, and families celebrate the lunar New Year together. In some Western countries there are very exciting carnivals, which take place forty days before Easter, usually in February. They might include parades, dancing in the streets day and night, loud music and colourful clothing of all kinds. Easter is an important religious and social festival in Christian countries. It celebrates the return of Jesus for Christians and it also celebrates the coming of spring. In Japan, the Cherry Blossom Festival happens a little later. The country is covered with cherry tree flowers so that it looks as though it might be covered with pink snow. People love to get together to eat, drink and have fun with each others. Festivals let us enjoy life, be proud of our customs and forget our daily life for a little while.

(1) In the US, people prefer waiting for a table to sitting with people they don’t know. This means a hostess may not seat a small group until a small table is available, even if a large one is. If you are sitting at a table with people you don’t know, it is impolite to light up a cigarette without asking if it will disturb them. At American restaurants and coffee shops you are usually served tap water before you order. You may find the bread and butter is free, and if you order coffee, you may get a free refill. Most cities and towns have no rules about opening and closing time for stores or restaurants, though they usually do make rules for bars. Especially in large cities, stores may be open 24 hours a day. Serving in restaurants is often large; too large for many people. If you can’t finish your meal but would like to enjoy the food later, ask your waitress or waiter for a “doggie bag”. It may have a picture of a dog on it, but everybody knows you’re taking the food for yourself. Supper and dinner are both words for the evening meal. Some people have “Sunday dinner”. This is an especially big noon meal. Tips are not usually added to the check. They are not included in the price of the meal, either. A tip of about 15% is expected and you should leave it on the table when you leave. In some restaurants, a check is brought on a plate and you put your money there. Then the waiter or waitress brings you your change. 1. Which statement is true? A. American people like sitting with people they don’t know. B. A hostess always seats a small group at a large table.
