BEIJING—Pharmacologist Tu Youyou has become the first scientist on the mainland to win America's respected Lasker Award for her discovery of a new approach to malaria (疟疾) treatment.

The 81-year-old was presented with the medica l prize by the Albert and Mary Lasker Foundation on September 23, 2018 in New York.

Tu, a scientist at the China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences in Beijing, was praised by the jury (评判委员会) for her “drug therapy (治疗) for malaria that has saved millions of lives across the globe, especially in the developing world,” according to a statement on the foundation's website.

In early 1969, Tu was appointed head of a government project that aimed to eradicate(消灭) malaria, and it was then that she began applying modern techniques with Chinese traditional medicine to find drug therapy for malaria.

After detecting (检测) 380 extracts (提取物) made from 2,000 candidate recipes, Tu and her colleagues obtained a pure substance called “Qinghaosu”, which became known as artemisinin in 1972.

An artemisinin-based drug combination is now the standard regimen (养生法) for malaria, and the World Health Organization lists artemisinin and related agents in its catalog of “Essential Medicines”, said a statement from the foundation.

The Lasker Awards are given annually to people who have made major advances in the understanding, diagnosis, treatment, cure and prevention of human diseases since 1945.

Lasker Awards are known as “America's Nobels” for their knack (熟练技术) of gaining future recognition by the Nobel committee. In the last two decades, 28 Lasker laureates (得奖者) have gone on to receive the Nobel Prize, and 80 since 1945.

Ask savvy investors(投资者) how they learned their first lessons about money, and they'll probably tell you lessons their parents taught them.

The money values we learn as children stay with us the rest of our lives. If you are a parent, teaching your children the value of saving and investing will benefit them the rest of their lives. Here's what you can do:

Help your child begin to save. Open savings accounts for your children, and teach them how the bank adds interest to their savings that makes their money grow. Encourage your children to save a little from every bit of money they receive, such as allowances, birthday gifts, etc. You may even want to set up a matching program, contributing fifty cents for each dollar your child saves.

Teach your child about stocks(股票). A child in elementary school can start learning about how businesses work. Once your child understands the basics, ask him or her to think about some of the businesses that might be good stock investments. Then use Morningstar Mutual Fund Guide(available at your library)to find a quality mutual fund that holds some of these companies, or a mutual fund that caters to children such as the Stein Roe Young Investor Fund. Many funds accept regular monthly investments as low as $50 a month, so these funds can be a good way to teach children about the stock market while saving for their college education.

Encourage early IRA(个人退休金账户)saving. The new Roth IRA is a great way for children who are working in summers or after school to begin saving for their future. Imagine how much money you'd have today if you had saved $3,000 a year since you were a teenager!

Let your kids handle their own money. We all learn by doing, so letting your kids manage a segment of their budget(预算)will let them earn valuable financial lessons. They may make mistakes, but they will be small mistakes that may help them avoid larger mistakes as adults.

40.Which would be the best title for this passage?

A.in the kindergarten B.in primary school

C.in middle school D.in college

Today, people all over the world are moving out of small villages in the country to go and live in big, noisy cities. They are moving from the peaceful hills, mountains, fields, rivers and streams of the countryside to the busy world of streets, buildings, traffic and crowds. This movement from rural(乡下的) areas to urban areas has been going on for over two hundred years.

In many countries, the main reason people come to live in towns and cities is work. After one or two large factories have been built in or near a town, people come to find work, and soon an industrial area begins to grow. There is usually a_residential_area nearby, too. The families of these workers need schools, hospitals and shops, so many people come to live in the area to provide these services and a city grows.

In every major city in the world, there is a business district where the big companies have their main offices. In the United States, this area is usually in the city center downtown. It is here that you can see many huge skyscrapers(摩天大楼)and office blocks. The people who work here often travel a long way to work each day. Many of them live in the suburbs of the city, far away from the industrial area and the city center. Some suburbs are very pleasant, with nice houses and big gardens. There are usually parks for children to play in and large department stores where you can buy all you need.

But what is the future of the big cities? Will they continue to get bigger and bigger? Perhaps not. Some major cities have actually become smaller in the last ten years, and it is quite possible that one day we will see people moving out of the major cities and back into smaller towns and villages.

第三部分:任务型阅读(共10小题;每小题1分,满分10分)

Wondering how many calories the banana cream pie on your plate has? Some Japanese have a novel way to find out: Photograph it with a cellphone and send the image to an expert. With cellphones becoming common in Japan and rising concern over expanding waistlines, health-care providers will allow the calorie-conscious people to send photos of their meals to nutritionists for advice.

Public health insurance offices in Osaka in Western Japan have launched the service on a trial basis. About 100 cardiac patients signed up in the first year, followed by diabetes and obesity patients in the second. “Japanese have been getting fatter, especially men in their 20s and 30s. There is concern over what they learned about nutrition when they were younger,” the Osaka official, Satomi Onishi said. “We’re hoping that this program can help us deal with the problem.”

Osaka is using a system developed by Asahi Kasei Corp. The system is operating among about 150 health-care providers and local governments around the country. Nutritionists can work with photos from one day’s meals to several weeks’ worth. Results come back in three days. People can also log on a website to get further information.

Dr Yutaka Kimura has developed a similar system at Kansai Medical University’s Hirakata Hospital, also in Osaka. Five patients have taken part in the programme, which costs $37 to join and $21 per month. Patients photograph meals over the course of t hree to seven days, and a nutritionist e-mails advice to them. “Patients used to fill in meal logs, but people tend to forget things or underestimate their portions,” Kimura said. “Photographing meals and e-mailing them can be easier and get more accurate results.”

As Japanese have turned to bigger portions and more meat and fried foods, obesity and related illnesses such as high blood pressure have become a rising concern. The Health Ministry estimated last year that more than half of Japanese men and about one in five women between 40 and 70 years old were at the increased risk of heart disease, type Ⅱ diabetes and other diseases because of obesity. With the Health Ministry hoping to see a 25% reduction in the number of people at the risk of these diseases by 2018, Osaka officials hope the cellphone program will help.

As a boy growing up in India,I had longed to travel abroad.I used to listen to the stories my father would tell me about his stay in Canada and tours to Europe in the 1970s,with great interest.

My big moment finally came in the summer of 1998 when I was able to accompany my parents to Europe, where my father was to attend a meeting. We planned to travel to Belgium,Netherlands and West Germany.

I have vivid memories even today of going to Mumbai airport at night all excited about finally going abroad.I had heard several great things about Lufthansa till then but now I finally got to experience them first hand, during the flight to Frankfurt. We flew business class and even today I can remember the excellent service by the Lufthansa crew. The flight was really smooth and thoroughly enjoyable, even for someone like me,who is otherwise scared of flying.

After spending almost two weeks in Europe,we took the Lufthansa airport express from Dusseldorf to Frankfurt airport, for our return flight. What a journey that was! All along the Rhine (莱茵河),it was simply an unforgettable experience.I was in a sombre mood on the flight back to Mumbai as it marked the end of a wonderful vacation, but the Lufthansa crew members were able to change it into a most enjoyable experience yet again, with the quality of their service.

Being the first airline to take me overseas,Lufthansa will always hold a special place in my heart.Even today,I continue to enjoy flights on Lufthansa and simply cannot dream of choosing any other airline.Flying,in general, for me,has always been an ordeal (terrible and painful experience).Flying on Lufthansa, however,is something I always have and always will look forward to.

The Beatles were the most influential band in pop history. In their 8-year, 12-album history, Paul McCar tney, John Lennon, George Harrison and Ringo Starr altered (改变) popular culture dramatically. And it wasn't just the suits and changing lengths of hair the four Liverpool boys wore that had such an impact, but what they seemed to stand for. The world saw them as the voice of a new generation, one with a very different attitude to life.

Their influence was at its height in the 1960s, but their music continues to stir listeners today. However, up until recently one aspect of the Beatles was struck in Yesterday: The music had never been remastered (重新灌录). But on September 9 that situation came to an end, with the release of the entire band's music in a digital makeover. It is probably the biggest reissue (重新发行) in pop music history, said British newspaper the Financial Times.

The albums were remastered at Abbey Road Studios in London, the location where the band produced much of their work. The cover of their last album, Abbey Road of 1969, featured the four young men striding (大步行走) across a zebra crossing on Abbey Road itself. It is one of the most famous of all Beatles images.

Recently, to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the album, hundreds of Beatles lovers gathered there to show their appreciation.

I had the meanest mother in the world. While other kids ate candy for breakfast, I had to have cereal (谷类食物), eggs or toast. While others had Cokes and candy for lunch, I had to eat a sandwich. As you can guess, my supper was different from other kids' too. But_at_least_I_wasn't_alone_in_my_sufferings. My sister and two brothers

had the same mean mother as I did.

My mother insisted upon knowing where we were at all times. She had to know who our friends were and where we were going. She insisted if we said we'd be gone an hour, then we be gone one hour or less—not one hour and one minute. And she always insisted upon us telling the truth. Now you can see how mean she was.

The worst is yet to come. We had to be in bed by nine each night and up at eight the next morning. We had to wash dishes, make beds, and learn to cook. We had to wear clean clothes and take a bath, while the other kids always wore their clothes for days. I believe she laid awake at night thinking up mean things to do to us.

Throug h the years, things didn't improve a bit. We could not lie in bed, “sick” like our friends did, and miss school. Our marks in school had to be up to par(达到正常水平). Our friends' report cards had beautiful colors on them, black for passing, red for failing. My mother, being as different as she was, would settle for nothing less than ugly black marks.

As the years rolled by, we were one by one put to shame. We were graduated from high school. With our mother behind us, talking, hitting and demanding respect, none of us was allowed the pleasure of being a drop-out.

My mother was a complete failure as a mother. Out of four children, a couple of us attained some higher education. And whom do we have to blame for the terrible way we turned out? You're right, our mean mother. She forced us to grow up into educated and honest adults.

Now I am trying to raise my three children. I am filled with pride when my children call me mean. Because, you see, I had the meanest mother in the world.

43.What does the sentence “But at least I wasn't alone in my sufferings.” mean?

A.The author's mother was only mean to her.

B.The author's mother suffered her.

C.The author's mother was mean to her sister, brothers and her.

D.The author wasn't alone because of suffering.

44.According to the passage, the author's mother will ask her children to do all the following EXCEPT ________.

A.learn to cook

B.wear clean clothes

C.go to bed and get up at fixed time

D.drink as much Cokes as they want

45.Why was the author's mother mean to her children?

A.Because she wanted her children to be top students in school.

B.Because she wanted her children to bring home colored report cards like her friends did.

C.Because she wanted her children to drop out.

D.Because she wanted her children to do their best at school and be educated and respected citizens.

You love Jay Chou's songs and you can sing some quite well. So you make a video of your performance and post it online for your friends to see. But what if this led to something beyond your wildest imagination—a career in music?

Canadian teenager Justin Bieber, 16, has just had the magical experience: He posted homemade videos of his versions of songs by American singer Chris Brown online for his relatives. He received a phone call from Brown, telling him how much he liked his performance. His singing eventually earned him a fan base and a record contract. After releasing a popular EP (extended play密纹唱片) record in November 2018, his album My world 2.0 came out last Tuesday.

Bieber sings ballads and songs about puppy love. But is he just another gooey (甜腻的) teen idol? David Malitz, a columnist with the Washington Post, doesn't think so. “If we truly want the best for American children, let us pause and give thanks for Justin Bieber,” he writes. “After years o f humdrum bubblegum (乏味的摇滚舞曲) from Miley Cyrus and the Jonas Brothers, the 16-year-old has thrown a candy-coated wrench (扭转) into Disney's heartthrob (甜心) assembly line (生产线) by giving young fans something worth screaming their lungs out for: lovable pop s ongs.”

From a boy who grew up below the poverty line with his divorced mom to a star who caused near-riots (近乎失控) in shopping malls, even Bieber himself can't believe his overnight fame, although his kind of success is becoming more and more common in the Internet era.

Interested in hockey (冰球), the national sport of Canada, the boy once put up pictures of players on the walls of his bedroom. He dreamed of being a hockey star and used to practice signing his autograph (签名). He doesn't need practice now. He signs autographs, if the girls can get close enough, as a music star.

46.What did Chris Brown think of Justin Bieber's singing?

A.He didn't like it.

B.He liked it very much.

C.He didn't say anything.

D.He supported Justin Bieber.

47.Who is a columnist?

A.Chris Brown. B.Jay Chou.

C.David Malitz. D.Miley Cyrus.

48.What can we learn from the fourth paragraph?

A.He had a happy family.

B.His family was very poor once.

C.His family was rich.

D.His family helped him a lot.

49.What's Justin Bieber's hobby?

A.Singing. B.Hockey.

C.Signing. D.Making records.

50.What's the best title of the passage?

A.Justin Bieber's overnight singing online.

B.Justin Bieber's common experience.

C.Justin Bieber's life.

D.Justin Bieber's records.

BEIJING, March 9—The central government will require an additional three years of use for official vehicles for ministers (部长) and governors (政府官员) to reduce the costs of purchasing new cars, media have reported.

The new rule has been applied among all Party and government departments nationwide, the Beijing News reported on Tuesday. The new rule has not yet been made public, said Li, a member of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference National Committe e. Under the old rules, the cars used by minister-level officials could be replaced as often as every five years, Li said. These officials will also continue to use the same cars when they take new posts, he added.

The new rule also reiterated (重申) that o fficials ranking below minister-or governor-levels should not be allocated cars. The cars possessed by their departments

should be used on demand.

“It violates the rules for lower-ranking—even county-level-officials to be allocated cars,” Li said.

Purchases of vehicles for official use have been heavily investigated, as they account for a large expenditure of public funds every year.

A survey on the Web news https://www.doczj.com/doc/2c9162531.html, found 59 percent of respondents believed the new rule will be difficult to obey bec ause it is related to officials’ interests.

Local government departments had stopped approvals for requests for such vehicles and had started to limit the number of such cars under the new rules, Li said. “The future reform of official vehicle use will introduce market systems”,Li said.

Premier Wen Jiabao said in the annual government work report on Saturday that expenditures on such vehicles will not increase in 2018 compared with a year ago.

Beijing’s standing deputy mayor Ji Lin last week said the mu nicipal government will release the number of vehicles for official use in the capital as early as at the end of this month.

Earlier this month, the Ministry of Finance had published a rule regulating the budgets for such vehicles.

It tells about the ups and downs of the Berglund family over many years. Mr. Franzen fills the book with sharp observations about American politics, culture and society.

Jennifer Egan's book A Visit from the Goon Squad takes place in 13 chapters over 40 years. The story moves back and forth in time, from different viewpoints. “Grandma, Grandma, t ell us a story!” Four darling children sat by my feet, looking up at me expectantly.

Suddenly, we were interrupted clapping. “Terrific,” the director said, stepping up the stage from the aisle(过道).“Except, could you kids face the audience a bit more?”

The kids shifted to face the empty seats, which would be filled in a few days for the church play.“Perfect,” the director said. “Now, Grandma, read to your grandchildren.” A pang of sadness hit me. If only I could read to my real grandchild!

I had a granddaughter, but I'd never met her. Sixteen years earlier my son was involved in a relationship that ended badly. But out of it came a blessing: a baby girl named Lena. I hoped to be a grandmother to her—but shortly after the birth, the mother moved without any address left. Over the years, I asked around town to try and find my son's ex-wife(前妻), but it seemed that she didn't want to be found.

I'd just joined this new church a week earlier, and was at once offered the part of Grandma in the play. At least now I could pretend to be a grandma. The rehearsals went well, and finally the day of the show arrived. The performance was great. “You all looked so natural up there,” one of my friends said.

Afterward, we went to the church basement for refreshments(茶点). I walked over to one of the girls in the play, Rehearsals had been such a whirlwind(一片忙乱) that we never really got to talk. “How's my granddaughter?” I joked.

“Fine!” she answered. Just then, someone else walked up and asked the girl her name.

I wasn't sure I heard the girl's answer correctly. But it made me ask her another question. “What's your mother's name?”

She told me, I was still in shock. “And what's your father's name?” I asked. She told me. It was my son.

She'd only started going to that church a week before I did. Since that day of the play, we've stayed close. Not long ago, she even made me a great grandma.

A.Telling a story. B.Playing a game.

B.The director's words hurt her so badly.

D.The director wasn't content with her performance.

42.We can infer that when writing the story, the author felt ________.

The World Health Organization says obesity rates are rising in Pacific island countries. So,too, are health problems linked to being overweight.

The WHO says a major reason for the rising obesity rates is an increase in imported foods. It says many Pacific islanders have replaced their traditional diets of vegetables and fruits with imported processed foods.

Dr.Temu Waqanivalu is with the World Health Organization's South Pacific office in Suva,Fiji. He says many of the imported products lack nutritional value.

Temu Waqanivalu said:“In some of the places, you'd be amazed to see how a bottle of Coke is cheaper than a bottle of water.I think that represents the kind of off-environment we've created that doesn't really encourage or make lifestyle choices an easy choice for the population.”

And a lack of physical activity among many Pacific islanders only adds to the obesity problem.

The WHO says more than 50 percent of the population is overweight in at least ten Pacific island countries. The rate is as high as 80 percent among women in the territory of American Samoa.Fiji had the lowest obesity rate at 30 percent.

In all, almost ten million people live in Pacific island countries. The WHO estimates that about 40 percent of them have health disorders related to diet and nutrition.

Diabetes rates are among the highest in the world.Forty-seven percent of the people in American Samoa have diabetes. So do 44 percent of the people in Tokelau,a territory of New Zealand.

By comparison, the diabetes rate is 13 percent in the United States,a country that has its own problems with rising obesity.

Officials also note an increase in nutritional problems like anemia and not enough vitamin A in the diets of Pacific islanders.Dr.Waqanivalu says treating conditions related to obesity and diet puts pressure on limited health resources and budgets.
