A local grocery store here has been remodelled and not a single one of the changes is good for those of us who shop there. The grocery aisles(通道)have been rearranged with some going in one direction and others going in another. The aisles have been pushed closer together, making

it harder to get through them.It seems like all of these changes have been for the purpose of slowing the shoppers down so they will make more impulse(冲动)buys. As I walked through the store today,no one was smiling and everyone was unhappy about it.

The change that bothered me the most, however, was in the check-out aisles.Only a few cashiers were left working with huge sections changed into self-scanning check-outs.It saddened me to see this.I knew that people were probably going to lose their jobs because of this change.I got in a cashier aisle and patiently waited while I saw some other people struggling to figure out how the self-scanning machines worked.I swore at that moment never to use one myself even if I had to wait longer every time I shopped there.

When I finally arrived at the front of the aisle,I saw the cashier was someone I knew.I greeted her with a smile. She smiled back with warmth and kindness that touched my soul.We chatted happily while she scanned and bagged up my groceries.I felt a friendship and a connection with her that warmed my heart.I wished her well before I left.

Machines can do a lot for us,but there are many things they can’t do.They can’t smile or love.Only we can do that.It is time that we should realize that profits aren’t more important than people and that machines aren’t more important than us.It is time that we should learn that loving each other and this world is what life is all about.

24.What may account for the store’s changes?

A.To make more profits.

B.To satisfy the shoppers

C.To offer more products.

D.To make shopping easier.

25.What’s the result of the use of self-scanning machines according to the author?

A.It will attract more customers.

B.It has reduced the cashiers’burden.

C.It has brought shoppers more convenience.

D.It will make many people unemployed.

26.How did the author feel when he met the cashier?

A.Calm.

B.Glad.

C.Angry.

D.Surprised.

27.What’s the best title for the text?

A.Machines or Us?

B.Why Use Machines?

C.Are Changes Necessary?

D.How Does the World Change?

C

The Himalayas, which stretch some2,900kilometers between India,Pakistan,China, and Nepal, are the world’s tallest mountain range. In addition to Mount Everest, the world’s tallest mountain by peak elevation standing8,848meters tall, the range also features several other mountain peaks over8,000meters.It is the only mountain range to have mountains over8,000 meters—the runner-up is a mountain range in South America, whose tallest peak is just6,952 meters tall.

Millions of years ago, these mountain peaks didn’t exist. The Asian continent was mostly complete, but India was an island floating off the coast of Australia.Around220million years ago, around the time when Pangea was breaking apart,India started to move northwards. It travelled some6,000kilometers before it finally hit Asia around40to50million years ago. Then, part of the Indian landmass(陆块)began to go beneath the Asian one, moving the Asian landmass up,which resulted in the rise of the Himalayas. It’s thought that India’s coastline was denser and more firmly attached to the seabed, which is why Asia’s softer soil was pushed up rather than the other way around.

The mountain range grew very rapidly in comparison to most mountain ranges, and it’s

actually still growing today.Mount Everest and its fellows actually grow by approximately a net of about a centimeter or so every year. The Appalachian Mountains in North America, which developed some300million years ago or more,is actually decreasing in peak elevations as it erodes(侵蚀).

The continued growth in the Himalayas is likely due to the Indian tectonic(地壳构造上的)plate still moving slowly but surely northward. We know the plate is still moving in part because of the frequent earthquakes in the region.

28.What do the underlined words“the runner-up”in paragraph1probably mean?

A.The fastest.

B.The lowest.

C.The most popular.

D.The second tallest.

29.What led to the formation of the Himalayas?

A.The long coastline of India.

B.The fast movement of India.

C.The firm attachment of Asia to the seabed.

D.The meeting of India with the Asian continent.

30.What can we learn from paragraph3?

A.Most mountains in the world grow rapidly.

B.The Appalachian Mountains have soft soils.

C.Mount Everest will be about one meter taller in a century.

D.The Appalachian Mountains was once taller than the Himalayas.

31.What will happen to the Himalayas in the future?

A.It will continue to grow.

B.It will move southwards.

C.It will attract more tourists.

D.It will have fewer earthquakes.

A new study has found that getting adequate sleep is the key to improving academic performance.

Jeffrey Grossman, who led the research, wasn’t trying to find the association between sleep and grades when he handed out Fitbits to the100students in his class.Instead, the professor hoped the popular wrist-worn device, which tracks a person’s activity24/7,would show a correlation(关联)between physical exercise and academic achievement.

As part of the research,a quarter of the participants were enrolled in an intense fitness class specially created for the study. After the term ended,Grossman was surprised to find that there was no measurable difference in test performance between the group that had been physically active and the group that had not.

However, the study provided a surprising insight. As the researchers were analyzing the large amount of data, they noticed an interesting trend coming from the participants’sleep patterns. There was a straight-line relationship between the average amount of sleep a student got and his grades on exams.

Even more interestingly,it was also not sufficient for students to just head to bed early the night before a test.Grossman says,“It turns out that a good night’s sleep doesn’t correlate at all with test performance.Instead,it’s the sleep you get during the days when learning is happening that matters most.”

The time when students went to bed each night was similarly important. Those who went to bed in the early hours of the morning performed poorly, even if the total sleep time was the same as a higher-performing student.“When you go to bed matters,”Grossman says.“If you get seven hours of sleep,no matter when you get that sleep,as long as it’s before certain times, say you go to bed at10,or at12,or at1,your performance is the same. But if you go to bed after2,your

performance starts to go down even if you get the same seven hours. So,quantity isn’t everything.”

32.Why did Grossman do the research?

A.To call on students to have enough sleep.

B.To find the connection between physical exercise and grades.

C.To show lack of sleep increases a person’s risk of getting diseases.

D.To prove enough sleep is important to students’academic performance.

33.How did the researchers get the result of the experiment?

A.By analyzing data.

B.By researching online.

C.By referring to students’reports.

D.By asking students’parents.

34.What is the most important for students to get good grades?

A.Working out every day.

B.Staying up late to study.

C.Sleeping well during learning days.

D.Getting enough sleep the night before a test.

35.What does the author want to tell us in the last paragraph?

A.Going to bed early is important.

B.The total time of sleeping matters most.

C.The quality of sleeping determines everything.

D.Students perform well by going to bed at1am.

Any challenging activity—from computer programming to playing a musical instrument to athletics—requires _____42_____ practice. A perfect golf swing or faultless butterfly stroke (蝶泳) takes countless hours of practice and repetitions to perfect. Anyone who wants to have a good command a skill must go through the _____43_____ of practice, critical feedback, polish, and increasing improvement again, again, and again. Some people seem able to concentrate on practicing an activity like this for years and take _____44_____ in their gradual improvement. Yet others find this kind of focused, time-intensive work to be _____45_____ or boring. Why? The _____46_____ may depend on the ability to enter into a state of “flow,” the feeling of being completely involved in what you are doing. Flow states can happen in the course of any activity, and they are most common when a task has definite goals and where the individual is able to _____47_____ their performance to clear and immediate feedback. Csikszentmihalyi suggested that those who most _____48_____ entered into flow states had an “autotelic personality”—a tendency to seek out challenges and get into a state of flow. While those without such a personality see difficulties, autotelic individuals see opportunities to build skills and they have low levels of self-centeredness. Such people, with their ability to focus on tasks rather than rewards have a great _____49_____ over others in developing their innate(天生的) abilities. But how can we get into a flow state for an activity so that we enjoy both the process of improving skills and the _____50_____ of being a master? _____51_____ for those of us who don’t necessarily possess an autotelic personality, there is evidence that flow states can be _____52_____ by environmental factors. For instance, in Montessori schools, students do not study by following direct instruction. _____53_____, they are encouraged to develop and pursue personal interests. Competition is _____54_____ and grading is not emphasized. Students are grouped together according to shared interests, rather than separated by ability. While there isn’t yet a pill that can turn dull practice into an exciting activity for anyone, it is comforti ng that we seem to be able to advance into flow states. By giving ourselves unstructured, open-ended time, minimum distractions, and a task set at a moderate level of _____55_____, we may be able to love what we’re doing while we put in the hard work practicing the things we love doing. 41.
