Vienna—In spite of Iraq’s decision to stop oil deliveries, the 11 nation Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) will not increase production to make up the shortfall, ministers decided on Tuesday in V ienna.

The 11 oil ministers decided to meet again on July 3 to discuss the effects of the Iraq temporary stop. The organization’s president, Charkid Khelil of Algeria, said after the meeting that stocks were high and prices were stable, so quota (配额) increases were not necessary.

The EU Commission has expressed concern about Iraq’s output stop. A speaker said OPEC had to take all possible measures to keep or lower the oil price.

Suadi Arabia’s Oil Minister Ali Al-Nuaimi had earlier said there would not be any shortfall of oil in the market. The organization had already taken steps to fill the gap, he said. OPEC Secretary General Ali Rodriguez added that the period of Iraq’s output stop to exports was not known, so other exporters were not going to lift quotas yet. If the market was destabilized (动摇), a suitable response could be made.

Iraq on Monday stop shipments of crude oil to protest against the UN Security Council’s

decision to extend the oil-for-food programme by only a month, instead of the normal six-month renewal(延期).

Just before the Vienna meeting, oil prices had gone up, with a barrel of OPEC crude selling for 27.05 dollars, up from 26.81 dollars last Friday. North sea oil was at 29.26 dollars on Monday evening.

OPEC wants the oil price to stay within a margin of 22 to 28 dollars and achieved that with cuts in January and March that reduced 2.5 million barrels per day off quotas.

It was a cold, rainy and wholly miserable afternoon in Washington, and a hot muggy night in Miami. It was Sunday, and three games were played in the two cities. The people playing them and the people watching them tell us much about the ever-changing ethnic structure of the United States.

Professional football in the United States is almost wholly played by native-born American citizens, mostly very large and very strong, many of them black. It is a game of physical strength. Linemen routinely weigh more than 300 pounds. Players are valued for their weigh and muscles, for how fast they can run, and how hard they can hit each other. Football draws the biggest crowds, but the teams play only once a week, because they get so battered.

The 67,204 fans were in Miami for the final game of the baseball World Series. Baseball was once America"s favorite game, but has lost that claim to basketball.

Baseball is a game that requires strength, but not hugeness. Agility, quickness, perfect vision and quick reaction are more important than pure strength. Baseball was once a purely American game, but has spread around much of the New World. In that Sunday’s final, the final hit of the extra inning game was delivered by a native of Columbia. The Most V aluable Player in the game was a native of Columbia. The rosters of both teams were awash with Hispanic names, as is

Miami, which now claims the World Championship is a game that may be losing popularity in America, but has gained it in much of the rest of the world. Baseball in America has taken on a strong Hispanic flavor, with a dash of Japanese added for seasoning.

Soccer, which many countries just call football, is the most widely enjoyed sport in the world. In soccer, which many countries just call football, the ethnic tide has been the reverse of baseball. Until recently, professional soccer in the United States has largely been an import, played by South Americans and Europeans. Now, American citizens in large numbers are finally taking up the most popular game in the world.

Basketball, an American invention increasingly played around the world, these days draws large crowds back home. Likewise, hockey, a game largely imported to the United States from neighboring Canada. Lacrosse, a version of which was played by Native Americans before the Europeans arrived, is also gaining a keen national following.

Sports of all kinds are winning support from American armchair enthusiasts from a variety of ethnic backgrounds.

76. Which of the following can reflect the ever-changing ethnic structure of America?

A. Sportsman.

B. Audience.

C. Both of them.

D. None of them.

77. Who play professional football in the United States?

A. Native-born American citizens.

B. Europeans.

C. South Americans.

D. Both B and C.

78.What is the world’s favorite game?

A. Baseball.

B. Basketball.

C. Professional football.

D. Soccer.

79. Which of the following statements about soccer is true?

A. In soccer and basketball, the ethnic tide is different.

B. Until recently, soccer becomes an important game; so many native Americans play it.

C. It is the most popular game in the world; so many American citizens take up it.

D. Although soccer is the most popular game in the world, American citizens in large numbers do not like first.

80. The author of the passage wants to tell us that ____.

A. Americans like sports and sports reveal much about the changing ethnic structure of the United States

B. In Washington, several games are played in one day

C. Americans like all kinds of games

D. The American games are watched by native-Americans and played by people from different countries

Walk through a mall on a weekend and you get the impression teenagers save money to buy clothes, iPods, or video game systems, but a new survey shows their priority (优先考虑) is quite different – saving for college.

The survey by online brokerage (经纪公司) TD Ameritrade Holding Corp. suggests putting money away for higher education is the top savings goal for today's teens. The results showed 62 percent of teens aged 14 through 19 save their money for college, a much higher rate than the 40 percent of adults who said they saved when they were teens.

Educators didn't expect the results. They are pushing for financial (理财的) literacy (素养)

education in schools.

―It's a pleasant surprise that we're seeing young people paying that much attention to the importance of this issue,‖ said Joseph Peri, CEO of the nonprofit Council for Economic Education. ―Part of teaching the importance of investing is showing that the best i nvestment a young person can make i s an investment in themselves.‖

The survey suggests teens save more of their money than their elders did when they were young. About 87 percent of teens say they save.

The results also suggest 78 percent of teens said they want a plan that involves splitting the cost of education with their parents.

The willingness of teens to share the price of their education suggests that they are aware of rising college costs, Y oung said.

More than 80 percent of teens reported that they consider education to be important to future success, compared with 56 percent of adults surveyed who say they felt that way as teens.

―We've become more conscious of the opportunities that are out there for us and the compet ition that's out there,‖ said Megan Partridge, 17, a student at V oorhees High School in Glen Gardner, New Jersey. AP

Do you find that late at night, your homework done, you aren’t tired enough to sleep? In fact, you could get out of bed and go for a run, or play a quick game of basketball? It’s not a good feeling because, although you don’t feel sleepy, you certainly wil l in the morning.

It’s probably not coffee or tea or other stimulants (刺激物) that are the problem. Indeed, it may not be a problem at all, according to some researchers, just the way the teenage body works.

But not all schools seem to realize this.

It seems that some American schools are getting the message and giving teenagers more time to sleep in the morning. They’ve found that starting after 8 am makes students more likely to turn up on time to school, do better work, and generally feel happier.

But in most American schools after- school activities like sports and bus routes are given as reasons for a morning start time between 7am and 8am.

All this, the US National Sleep Foundation (协会) says, has serious consequences (后果) for teenagers. It means they don’t get the 8.5 to 9.5 hours of sleep a night they need. In fact some teens get just 7 hours or less under the covers. Researchers have come to the conclusion over the last 10 years that teens cannot easily fall asleep until about 11pm and need to sleep until about 8 the next morning.

Mary Carskadon of Brown University was in charge of (负责) a study of teen saliva (口水). Her team measured the amount of sleep-producing hormone (荷尔蒙) in the saliva.

She found teens have a higher hormone level late at night than either adults or young children. It also remains high the morning after. Why this is the case is not yet clear to scientists. But experts say they do know that the consequences to teenagers sleep deprivation are more serious than classrooms full of sleepy kids.

Falling asleep at roll call (点名) is just the beginning of the problem. In her book Snooze … or Lose Helen Emsellem says that sleep-deprived teens get sick more easily, are prone (易于) to headaches and get poorer grades.

86. According to the article, what contributes to many t eenagers’ late sleeping habits?

A. Coffee and tea.

B. Some stimulants.

C. Biological clock.

D. Activities before sleep.

87. According to researchers, starting schools later in the morning is likely to ______.

第四部分写作技能:

第一节简答题(共5小题, 每小题2分, 满分10分)阅读下面短文, 根据第91至第95小题的具体要求, 简要回答问题, 并将答案转写到答题卡上.

Airport security has been tightened after the terrorist attacks of September 11. When people fly,

their identity is carefully checked. This, at least, reduces known dangerous people but, of course, can not help with new recruits (新成员) or cases of forged documents. More important is the effort to keep passengers from bringing on board anything that could be used as a weapon. For this purpose, all passengers have to pass through a metal detector. These work by means of a series of very brief magnetic fields. Metal objects affect these fields as they disappear, and in fact make them last a few microseconds longer than normal. The machine can rec ognize this and then sends an audio signal to alert staff. When this happens, the passenger will be subject to a more detailed search to establish what is causing the detection to react.

Passengers’luggage passes on a conveyor belt through an X-ray machine. This sends out electro-magnetic waves. Since different materials absorb X-rays at different levels, with a little help from a computer, the operator can see distinct items in people’s bags. The display monitor usually shows different types of materials in different colors. Explosives usually appear orange. Operators also look for suspicious shapes and items. If they have any doubts, the passenger will be asked to open the bag for inspection.

Complex electronic equipment, such as laptop computers, offers a considerable challenge to detectors. It is almost impossible to know what is hidden in one just by looking. Some airports deals this with ―chemical sniffers ‖ that can detect traces of chemicals used in explosives.

91. Find a word in the passage similar in meaning to the word in bold ―distinct‖.

92. Why do all passengers have to get checked?(Within 9 words)

93. What is the greatest challenge to a detector according to the passage? (Within 6 words)

94. What will happen when the metal detector sends an audio signal to alert staff? (Within 10 words)

95..How do the machines work to recognize the explsives in passengers luggage?

第二节:阅读填空

阅读下列短文,根据所读内容在文后第96至第100小题的空格里填上适当的单词或短语。注意:每空不超过3个单词。(共10小题,每小题1分,满分10分)

Many animal and plant species have become extinct and many more are in great danger.

Dodo

The Dodo is a classic example of how human caused damage to the earth biology. The flightless Dodo was native to the Island of Mauritius in the Indian Ocean. The easily controlled bird became a source of food for sailors and was attacked by animals introduced to the island by human such as pigs, monkeys and rats. The population of Dodos rapidly decreased and the last one was killed in 1681.

Rhinos

The Rhino horn is a highly priced item for Asian medicine. This has led to the animal being hunted in its natural habitat. Once widespread in Africa and Eurasia, most Rhinos now live in protected natural parks and reserves. Their numbers have rapidly decreased in the last 50 years, and the animals remain under constant hunting from poachers.

The Giant Panda

The future of the Giant Panda is far from certain. As far as 1,000 remain in the wild. The Chinese government has set up 33 panda reserves to protect these beautiful animals. However, the panda’s black and white patched coat fetches a high price on the black market and determined poachers still perform one of the most serious threats to the animal’s continued existence.

Whales

Despite the fact that one-third of the world’s oceans have been declared whale reserves, 7 out

of 13 whale species remain endangered. Hunted for their rich supply of oil, their numbers have decreased to just 300. Striking against ships, poisonous pollution and being caught in fishing nets are other major causes of whale deaths.

Tigers

The last 100 years has seen a 95% reduction in the numbers of remaining tigers to between 5,000 and 7,000 and the Bali, Javan, and Caspian tigers are already extinct. The South China tiger is close to disappearing, with only 20 to 30 still alive. Like the Rhino horn, tiger’s bones and organs are sought after for traditional medic ines. These items are traded illegally along with tiger skins.

M: It sure does. Oh, it looks like Professor Brown is here. I’ll talk to you some more after class.

Happiness is for everyone. In fact, happiness is always around you if you put your heart into it. When you are in trouble at school, your friends will help you; when you study hard at your lessons, your parents are always taking good care of your life and your health; when you get success, your friend will congratulate you; when you do something wrong, people around you will help you to correct it. And when you do something good to others, you will fell happy, too. All these are your happiness. If you notice a bit of them, you can find that happiness is always around you.

Happiness is not the same as money; it’s a feeling of your heart. When you are poor, you can also be very happy, because you have something else that can’t be bought with money.

When you meet with difficulties, you can say loudly you are very happy, because you have more chances to challenge yourself. So you cannot always say you are poor and you have bad luck. If you take every chance you get, you can be a happy-and-lucky person.
