Passage 3

Everybody knows that the favorite food in the United States is the hamburger. It seems impossible, but people eat 34,000,000,000 hamburgers a year. This is enough to make a line of hamburgers around the world four times.

The favorite place to buy a hamburger is a fast-food restaurant. In these restaurants, people order their food, wait just a few minutes and carry it to their tables themselves. They can eat it in the restaurant or take the food out and eat it at home, at work, or in a park. At some restaurants people can drive up beside a window. They order the food, and a worker hands it to them through the window. Then they eat in their car.

Hamburgers are not the only kind of food that fast-food restaurants serve. Some serve fish, chicken, beef, sandwiches, or Mexican food. They also serve fries (French fired potatoes), shakes (a drink made from milk and ice cream), soft drinks, and coffee.

Fast-food restaurants are very popular because the service is fast and the food is inexpensive. For many people, this is more important than the quality of the food. These restaurants are also popular because the food is always the same. People know that if they eat at a company’s restaurant in the north or south of the city, the food will be the same. Passage 1

Hotlines (热线)have become common in China. Some radio stations use hotlines to encourage the listeners to take part in the talk shows.

That's a good idea. Yet, the fact is, some people do nothing but break the whole program.

Some people know little about the topic(话题)under discussion. Sometimes they do not even know what the host(主持人)is talking about. So the host has to tell the caller what the show is about. Usually the caller will ask a few questions which express his hope and show his ignorance(无知).Then the host has to answer and explain —how silly this is ! It wastes a lot of time. It seems that some people phone the hotlines in fun. They just want to let the listeners hear them. They don't care what the topic is, whether they themselves are interested in or how silly they appear to be.

Passage 2

Stage plays(舞台剧), at first, seem a lot like films. Both use actors and dialogue and scenery. But if you try to make a film by setting up a camera in front of the stage, you will find it won’t work. A film made in this way will leave the audience(观众)cold. And even worse you’ll b e wasting a powerful tool --- the camera.

A stage is actually a box. One side of the box has been removed(挪开) so the audience can see what’s going on inside. The actors remain at a fixed audience. In the film, however, the camera can bring the audience up close and fix their attention on small but important things: a frightened look, a whisper, a trembling of hands.

The camera offers the film maker freedom allowing him to move easily across barriers(界限) of time and space. He can show his action in real cities and on real farms. He can also use the camera to change the scene dozens of times in one film. No expert of the stage can do this.

The phrase, to be led around by the nose, shows man’s weakness. A person who is led around by the nose lets other people control him.

Passage 1

Some of the notebooks George Washington kept as a young men are still in existence. They show that he was learning Latin, was very interested in the basics of good behavior in society, and in reading English literature.

At school he seems only to have been interested in mathematics. In fact his formal education was surprisingly brief for a gentleman, and incomplete. For unlike other young Virginian gentlemen of that day, he did not go to the college of William and Mary in the Virginian Capital of Williamburg. In terms of formal training then, Washington contrasted sharply with some other early American Presidents such as John Adams, Thomas Jefferson and James Madison. In later years, Washington probably regretted his lack of intellectual training. He never felt comfortable in a debate in Congress, or any subject that had not to do with everyday, practical matters. Passage 1

As more women in the United States move up the professional ladder, more are finding it necessary to make business trips alone. Since this is new for many, some trips are certainly in order. If you are married, it is a good idea to encourage your husband and children to learn to cook a few simple meals while you are away. They will be much happier and probably enjoy the experience. Passage 3

How often one hears children wishing they were grown up, and old people wishing they were young again. Each age has its pleasures and its pains, and the happiest person is the one who enjoys what each age gives him without wasting his time in useless regrets.

Childhood is a time when there are few responsibilities to make life difficult. If a child has good parents, he is fed, looked after and loved, whatever he may do. It is impossible that he will ever again in his life be given so much without having to do anything in return. In addition, life is always presenting new things to the child-things that have lost their interest for older people because they are too well-known. But a child has his parents, he is not so free to do what he wishes to do;he is continually being told not to do things or being punished for what he has done wrong.

When the young man starts to earn his own living, he can no longer expect others to pay for his food, his clothes, and his room, but has to work if he wants to live comfortably. If he spends most of his time playing about in the way that he used to as a child, he will go hungry. And if he breaks the laws of society as he used to break the laws of his parents, he may go to prison. If, however, he works hard, keeps out of trouble and has good health, he can have the great happiness of building up for himself his own position in society.

51. According to the second paragraph, the writer thinks that _______.

A. life for a child is comparatively easy

You get freedom and the chance to meet new people. You are living away from home, planning your own routine and even cooking your own meals——and that means looking after your own money. At university, it’s all about the cash. Fees, student loans, rent, bills, overdraft (银行透支款)——you name it, you might have to pay for it. An important aspect of being at university is managing your own time. It’s up to you to decide when you’ll study, when you’ll go shopping and when you’ll have a night out. Sounds fantastic, doesn’t it? Of course, it is a good idea to organize your time with a weekly or monthly schedule. Remember, you can be as flexible with your time as you like, but you’ll always need to make sure you get out of bed for lectures, meet essay and project deadlines, and schedule in plenty of revision days before exams. After a hard day’s study, going out and having fun is what student life is all about. You can get involved in voluntary work and student representation activities and you could contribute and learn new skills with student magazine and r adio station. It’s the perfect way to make friends and add a bit of sparkle to you CV(个人简历). University life is about learning. You’ll be expected to go to all your lectures and classes. Most courses are assessed through exams, essays, practical work an d projects. You’ll have anything from one to five hours of lectures, in a day. But on top of that, you are expected to do a number of hours of self-study. Every student has a personal tutor to help with any problems you might have or you can speak to your lecturers and other tutors if you have questions. If you plan you time and your workload, you’ll have plenty of free time to enjoy student life at university. Plus, getting a degree makes sense in the long run——graduates earn more and are more likely to get a job than people without a degree. 1. According to the author, which is not the advantage of being away from home? A. Freedom B. Being rich. C. The chance to meet new friends. D. Plan your own routine. 2. Being college students, you can____________. A. plan your time freely. B. borrow a lot of money from the bank. C. cook in your friends’ houses. D. spend money at your will. 3. In order to pass the exams, you are expected to do a lot expect_____________. A. surfing the net for information. B. going for lectures. C. reviewing what you have learnt. D. writing papers. 5. You can make effort to do many things in order to enrich your blank CV. Which of the following is not mentioned in the passage? A. You can involve in voluntary work. B. As President Clinton said that day, the possibility that life existed on Mars billions of years ago was potentially one of the great discoveries of our time. After the excitement wore down and initial papers were published, other researchers began looking at samples from the same meteorite. Today, doctors and scientists are in almost every country hypnotize people to help them with their problems. What is hypnotism, and how does it work? Many people think that a hypnotist puts people to sleep. Then he makes the hypnotized people do strange things. This is not what a hypnotist does. Hypnotism is really just a way to relax the mind and body. What are some of the uses of hypnotism? We go to a hypnotist because w e have a problem. The problem makes us unhappy. The police sometimes ask hypnotists to help them. For example, a man sees an accident. He forgets the license number of the car he sees. If he is hypnotized he may remember it. The police can then find the car and catch the driver. People who are hypnotized can also make mistakes or say something that isn't true. People remember what they think they saw. That may not be what really happened. The police don't hypnotize people who do something wrong. Why not? People who are hypnotized may say something that isn't true.
