(1)

Another critical factor that plays a part in susceptibility (proneness / vulnerability) to colds is age. A study done by the University of Michigan School of Public Health revealed particulars that seem to hold true for the general population. Infants are the most cold-ridden group, averaging more than six colds in their first year, Boys have more colds than girls up to age three. After the age of three, girls are more susceptible than boys, and teenage girls; average three colds a year to boys' two

The general incidence of colds continues to decline into maturity. Elderly people who are in good health have as few as one or two colds annually. One-exception is found among people in their twenties, especially women, who show a rise in cold infections, because people in this age group are most likely to have young children. Adults who delay having children until their thirties and forties experience the same sudden increase in cold infections.

The study also found that economics plays an important role. As income increases, the frequency at which colds are reported in the family decreases. Families with the lowest income suffer about a third more colds than families at the lower end. Lower income generally forces people to live in more cramped quarters than those typically occupied by wealthier people, and crowding increases the opportunities for the cold virus to travel from person to person. Low income may also adversely influence diet. The degree to which poor nutrition affects susceptibility to colds is not yet clearly established, but an inadequate diet is suspected of lowering resistance, generally.

51. The paragraph that precedes this passage most probably deals with

A. minor diseases other than colds.

B. the recommended treatment of colds.

C. a factor that affects susceptibility to colds.

D. methods of preventing colds among elderly peopled

52. What does the author claim-about the study discussed in the passage?

53. According to the passage, which of the following groups of people is most likely to catch

colds?

A. Infant boys

B. Young girls.

C. Teenage boys.

D. Elderly women.

54. There is information in the second paragraph of the passage to support which of the

following conclusions?

A. Men are more susceptible to colds than women.

B. Children infect their parents with colds.

C. People who live in a cold climate have more colds than those who live in a warm one.

D. People who don't have children are more susceptible to colds than those who do.

55. The phrase "in this age group" (Paragraph 2, sentence 3) refers to

A. infants. Boys.

B. people in their twenties.

A. explain how cold viruses are transmitted.

B. prove that a poor diet causes colds.

C. discuss the relationship between income and frequency of colds.

D. discuss the distribution of income among the people in the study.

(2)

Communication researchers have found that most of a message is carried in non-verbal ways. The importance of this is that awareness of non-verbal messages can significantly influence the effectiveness of any communication. For example, one study found that up to 55% of the impact comes through facial expressions and another 30% from tone of voice and inflection. The research shows that three basic emotions are conveyed non-verbally. First, it is the extent to which we like or dislike others. Eye contact is the major indication of liking. People communicating normally look at each other about 40-60% of the time, and more eye contact than this, indicates liking, while less indicates dislike. Second, it is the extent of submissiveness or dominance. This is conveyed by the environment as well as by the speaker. Third, it is responsiveness --- positive, negative, or mixed - that others arouse in us. Posture, for example, leaning toward or away from another, has a great deal to do with this. Showing, responsiveness by leaning forward, nodding, and increasing eye contact will likely stimulate the speaker to continue on his or her current line of thought, for example.

Thus, non-verbal communication, or what is often generally referred to today as "body language", is mostly unconscious communication that shows the actual emotions the speaker or listener feels, and is a reliable indicator of these feelings. It determines how the spoken words will be interpreted, and is difficult to manipulate or disguise in any communication. The listener, by monitoring both verbal and non-verbal communication can get a clearer picture of the message, especially where mixed signals are being sent. Here, the non-verbal messages are more reliable than the verbal ones. For speakers, on the other hand, non-verbal communication presents both problems and potential contributions. Public speakers sometimes talk of a "cough-meter" by which they measure audience reaction; And for an audience, darting eyes, palms not visible, shifting from one foot to another, hand covering mouth or fingers tugging at the ear are clues. Whenever there is a conflict between the words that someone says and their body signals and movements, we almost always believe their body!

57. What does the passage mainly discuss?

A. Communication styles.

B. The complexity of communication.

C. Non-verbal communication.

D. The way feelings affect speaking.

58. The author implies that only 15% of the impact of communication comes from

A. facial expressions.

D. words spoken

59. The word “this” in paragraph 1 re fers to

A. indication of liking.

B. communicating normally.

C. looking at each other.

D. about 40-60% of the time.

Misery may love company, but this was ridiculous. More than a million IBM stockholders last week took a nightmare ride on a stock they had long trusted. IBM had been sliding all year recently hitting 10-year lows. |But after the company announced last Tuesday that it would, among other things, slash another 25,000 jobs, the stock took a historic dive. In 48 hours, it lost 11 points, or almost 18 percent of its value, closing Wednesday at 51. On Friday it hit another new low. Big Board officials camped out on the exchange floor to prevent chaos, and brokers answered frantic calls from investors in various stages of disbelief and agony. "They're screaming and shouting," said Carol Komskis of York Securities. "They're saying. Things like this just don't happen in America."

Stock prices that rise and fall are nothing new; that's what makes a market. But Big Blue had always epitomized the blue-chip stock that Americans could count on to send the kids to colleges or help retiree in style. Some investors may be in blissful ignorance; pension funds across the country are heavily invested in IBM. (The New York state employee pension funds alone hold 3.6 million shares.) But the .charm of stocks like IBM, General Motors and Westinghouse was that you could feel secure in buying them even if you didn’t know "earnin gs". Such stock made generations of Americans faithful capitalists. "This was the kind of stock that created wealth for a lot of people in this country," says Jonathan Pond, a Boston-'' based financial counselor and author.

He likes to tell the story of a Pittsburgh broker who-'was called by a retired steelworker ii the mid 1980s. The man had left $40,000 worth of blue-chip-stock certificates in his safe-deposit box when his father died, more than 20 years earlier. Meanwhile, those neglected pieces of paper had quietly turned into a half-million-dollar portfolio. That's not going to happen any more, says Pond. "The-old standby stocks are turning into today's and tomorrow's dogs."

Employees hurt: IBM workers were hit hard by the crash IBM employees and directors hold almost 5 percent of the stock, or 27.8 million shares, according to IBM's latest available numbers. Like many companies, IBM encourages to buy its own stock by selling it to them at a discount. It's wise enough to buy such stock in many cases, but many employees fail to diversify later. "It's nice to be patriotic to your company," says James A. Miller, senior portfolio manager at Barllett & Co. in Cincinnati. "But it's double risk for employees who , could end up with a slashed retirement and pink slip.”

63. "Misery may love company" means that

A. misfortunes never come singly,

B. unhappiness may be found in a business.

C. the company's conditions are miserable.

D. employees in the company tend to be moody.

A. their value dropped to the lowest point ever.

B. the company met a new rival.

C. the brokers hit each other on the exchange floor.

D. the company slashed more jobs.

65."Some investors may be in blissful ignorance'' indicates that

A. they are extremely happy because they don't know what has happened.

B. they are blind to pension funds being at risk

C. they are so happy that they are blind to the risk

D. they have a blind confidence in IBM and the like.

66. Inference can be made from the passage that

money.

D. The stocks that are put into the safe-deposit box now will not turn into big money.

After more than two centuries of experience, control of the Missouri-Mississippi has been reduced to four methods. First, we have levees, the oldest of all. Second comes the enlargement of the discharge capacity by straightening, widening, and deepening natural channels. Third in importance are the spillways, which guide excess water into auxiliary channels or let it flood-fairly small areas. Fourth, we have reservoirs to store up excess water, which may be released when natural channels are again able to carry it. Of these four methods, the construction of levees is till the surest because flood elevations are well known. Reservoirs are good but limited in usefulness because their benefits decrease with distance .from the communities that are to be protected.

Despite the height that the water once reached at St. Louis, and despite the wandering, homeless people and the damage to property and crops, the engineers have reason to survey their efforts, at flood control with satisfaction. But, as has been frequently suggested, it is about time that a Missouri River Authonty be created to deal with the problems of flood control, navigation, and power development.

69. Which of the following statements best sums up the author's opinion on the solution of the

problem?

A. Each state watered by the Missouri-Mississippi must handle its own flood problems.

B. Losses in property and lives must simply continue to be regarded as acts of nature.

C. There is very little that has been done, and even less that can be done in the future.

D. An overall controlling agency must be organized to deal with the entire problem.

70. One of the techniques for controlling the river complex under discussion actually involves

A. permitting minor flooding.

B. cutting off the entire flow of the rivers.

C. diverting the flow to other river channels.

D. letting nature take its course

71. The overall conclusion of the author is indicated by which of the following statements?

A. The problem of flood control is an isolated phenomenon and must be treated as such.

B. The total problem involving the Missouri-Mississippi comprises control, power

development and navigation,

C. Individual groups affected by floods refuse to take a broad view of the problems involved.

D. Since this problem has been with us for almost two hundred years, there is little we can do

to solve it

72. One may infer from reading this selection that :

A. people are moving away from the area of the rivers in order to save their property and

themselves

B. life in the area of the rivers is difficult and dangerous, but the living conditions are good.

C. the government and its agencies are conducting ongoing efforts to control the rivers and

improve measures already in place.

D. the building of spillways, levees, and reservoirs is very expensive.

73. The inference is made that when using material already available to control the rivers,

engineers have developed methods that will utilize that material to

A. designate locations that need control.

B. predict floods and ware the people.

C. prepare a history of the rivers.

D. construct the most viable means of control.

74. Of the methods, of flood control now in place, the order of effectiveness (from most to least)

is

A. levees, enlarged discharge capacity, spillways, reservoirs.

B. enlarged discharge capacity, spillways, reservoirs, levees.

C. reservoirs, spillways, enlarged discharge capacity, levees.

D. levees, spillways, reservoirs, enlarged discharge capacity.

In 1923 the innovative Russian filmmaker Dziga Vertov described filmmaking as a process that leads viewers toward a "fresh perception of the world." Vertov's description of film making should apply to films on the subject of art. Yet films on art have not had a powerful and pervasive effect on the way we see.

Publications .on art flourish, but these books and articles do not necessarily succeed in teaching us to see more deeply or more clearly Much writing in art history advances the discourse in the field but is unlikely to inform -the eye of one unfamiliar with its polemics. ^Films, however, with their capacity to present material visually and to reach a broader audience, have the potential to enhance visual literacy the ability to identify the details that characterize a particular style more effectively than publication can. Unfortunately, few of the hundred or so films on art that are made each year in our country are broadcast nationally on prime-time television.

The fact that films on art are rarely seen on prime-time television may be due not only to limitations on distribution but also to the shortcomings of many such films, some of these shortcomings can be attributed to the failure of art historians and filmmakers to collaborate closely enough when making films on art. These professionals are able, within their respective disciplines, to increase our awareness of visual forms. For close collaboration to occur, professionals in each discipline need to recognize that films on art can be both educational and entertaining, but this will require compromise on both sides.

A filmmaker who is creating a film about the work of an artist should not follow the standards set by rock videos and advertising. Filmmakers need to resist the impulse to move the camera quickly .from detail to detail for fear of boring the viewer,/to frame the image for the sake of drama alone, to add music for fear of silence. Filmmakers are aware that an art object demands concentration and, at the same time, are concerned that it may not be compelling enough -- and so they hope to provide relief by interposing "real" scenes that bear only a tangential relationship to the subject. But a work of art needs to be explored on its own terms. On the other hand, art historian need to trust that one can indicate and analyze, not:solely with words, but also by directing the viewer's gaze. The specialized written language of art history needs to be relinquished or at least tempered for the screen. Only air effective collaboration between film makers and art historians can create films that will enhance viewers' perceptions of art.

75. The passage suggests that a filmmaker desiring to enhance viewers' perceptions of art should

do which of the following?

A. Rely on the precise language of art history when developing scripts for films of art.

B. Rely on dramatic narrative and music to set a film's tone and style.

C. Recognize that a work of art by itself can be compelling enough to hold a viewer's attention.

D. Depend more strongly on narration instead of camera movements to guide the viewer's

gaze.

76. The author of the passage refers to Vertov in the first paragraph most probably in order to

A. provide an example of how films can be used to influence perceptions.

B. present evidence to support the argument that films have been used successfully to

influence viewers 'perceptions.

C. introduce the notion that film can influence how viewers see.

D. contrast a traditional view of the uses of film with a-more modem view

77. Which of the following best describes the organization of the passage?

A. An observation about an unsatisfactory situation is offered, the reasons for the situation are

discussed, and then ways to change it are suggested.

B. Two opinions regarding a controversial phenomenon are contrasted, supporting evidence

for each is presented, and then the two opinions are reconciled

C. Criticism of a point of view is discussed, the criticism is answered, and then the criticism is

applied to another point of view.

D. A point of view is described, evidence supporting the view is provided, and then a

summary is presented.

78. The passage is primarily concerned with

A. discussing why film's potential as a medium for presenting art to the general public has

not been fully realized and how film might be made more effective in this regard.

B. discussing the shortcomings of films on art and the technological innovations required to

increase the impact of film on visual literacy.

C. discussing the advantages and the disadvantages of using films rather than publications to

present works of art to the general public,

D. presenting information to support the view that films on art must focus more on education

and less on entertainment in order to increase visual literacy.

79. The author would most likely agree with which of the following statements about film and

visual literacy?

A. Reading a publication about a work of art and then seeing a film about the same work is

the most effective way to develop visual literacy.

B. Film has a great but not yet fully exploited capacity to increase viewers' awareness of

visual forms.

C. An increase in a viewer's awareness of visual forms will also lead to an increased

attention span.

D. A film that focuses on the details of a work of art will hinder the development of visual

literacy.

80. According to the passage, art historians desiring to work with filmmakers to enhance the

public's appreciation of an need to acknowledge which of the following?

A. The art historian's role in the creation of a film on art is likely to be a relatively minor one.

B. Film provides an ideal opportunity to acquaint viewers with a wide range of issues that

relate incidentally to a work of art.

C. An in-depth analysis of a work of art is not an appropriate topic for a film on art.

D. Film can use nonverbal means to achieve some of the same results that a spoken or

written discourse can achieve.

Pollution is a problem because man, in an increasingly populated and industrialized world, is upsetting the environment in which he lives. Many scientists maintain that one of man's greatest errors has been to equate growth with advancement Now "growth" industries are being looked on with suspicion in case their side effects damage the'-environment and disrupt the relationship of different forms of life. The growing population makes increasing demands on the world's fixed supply of air, water and land. This rise in population is accompanied by the desire of more and more people for a better standard of living. Thus still greater demands for electricity; water and goods result in an ever increasing amount of waste material to be disposed of. The problem has been causing increasing concern to: living things and their environment.
