In the long discussion of water on the Moon, a new study contradicts (与……相矛盾) some recent reports that say the Moon had water at the time of its formation. A group of researchers reports in the journal Science that when the Moon was created, some 4. 5 billion years ago, there was not much hydrogen (氢气) on it, and therefore no water.

The researchers surveyed and evaluated this by analyzing chlorine isotopes found in lunar rock samples from Apollo missions. The range of chlorine (氯) isotopes in lunar samples was 25 times that found in samples from Earth.

“If the Moon had significant levels of hydrogen, as Earth did, t his range would have been far less,” said Zachary D. Sharp, a scientist in the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences and the study?s lead author.

“The chlorine would have stuck together with hydrogen, forming compounds like hydrogen chloride, and esc aped from the Moon?s surface,”he said. The abundance of chlorine indicates a lack of hydrogen and water.

“The a mount of water on the Moon was way too low for life to have ever have possibly have existed there,” he said.

Most scientists believe the Moon was formed when a large object struck Earth, breaking off a chunk (a vast piece) that has since orbited Earth.

On Earth, goes one theory, water was released as steam from molten basalts (玄武岩) over time, eventually forming bodies of water.

“An unde rstandin g of whether the Moon was dry or wet will help us understand how water appeared on Earth,” Dr. Sharp said.

The seventh game of any play-off is always special, win or lose, it always has an edge-of-your-seat,

heart-in-your-throat intensity unlike any other. One play, one shot, one save may make all the difference.

But there are other things that make our games and sports so special.

For example, where we play our sports is often one of the best things about the games.Thinks of it:What is as pergect as a fresh sheet of ice after the Zamboni machine (赞博尼磨冰机) has made its final pass and left the surface as smooth as glass? Or a swimming pool on a summer morning, clear and calm, before the ferst swimmer has broken the water?

To me a freshly mowed and lined soccer field is as beautiful as any painting. SO is a golf course in the early morning, or in the evening when the sun is setting.

The stuff we paly with is wonderfull, too. Is there anything that feels as good in your hand as a brand-new baseball? Or a nice leather football? Grab hold of either, and you just habe to play a game of catch.

The clothes are good too. Sports uniforms are much more colorful and comfortable than regular clothes . Maybe that?s why so many kids stay in their soorts uniforms long after their games are over.

No shoes feel better on my feet than my golf shoes. Maybe th at?s because I know I am going to have fun whenever

I put then on.

We talk so much about winning in sports. But if you are the kind of kid who is happy only when their team wins , then sports will let you down. After all, no team or player wins all the time.

But if you can learn to enjoy the parts of sports that have nothing to do with winning or losing---the feel of a favorite bat or stick in your hand, or how your heartbeats when you put on your uniform and run onto the field

---then sports will always be fun. Whether you win or lose.

1.Which of the follow ing words is close in meaning to the phrases “edge-of-your-seat,heart-in-your-throat”in para 1?

A. Uncertain

B. Scared

C. Nervous

D. Enthusiastic.

2. According to the writer, people are advised .

A. not to play a game of catch

B. to wear sports uniform long

C. not to talk about winning in spors

D. to have fun in spors

由文章最后一段“But if y ou can learn to enjoy the parts of sports that have nothing to do with winning or losing... then sports will always be fun. Whether you win or lose.”

3. Sports uniforms, as well as spors shoes, are mentioned in the text

A. as an example of the special feeling of sports

B. as comforbable wearingfor sports

C. as particular desire of children

D. as most favorite of sportsmen

4. Which would be the best title for the passage?

A. Whether You Win or lose

B. Many Joys of Sports

C. Winning in Sports

D. Games and Sports

Every year in America, high-school students who want to go on to college take a national examination called the Scholastic Aptitude Test, or SAT in a shortened way. Their score is an important factor in determining which colleges will admit them or whether any will be admitted at all. The Scholastic Aptitude Test muasures one?s mathematical ability and use of the English language. Traditionally, the English portion involved grammatical questions and paragraphs that test reading comprehension.

But the SAT folks have added a single question , to be answered in an essay, hand-written on the spot. That?s an interesting way to test writing ability, but conten t aside, have you ever seen young people?s handwriting lately? Or anyone?s for that matter, in this age of computer keyboards? Students write numbers and sign their names on bank checks. They scribble class notes in what can generously be described as the written word. And they hand-write, or more often print, a word or two of identification on luggage and lunch bags. Otherwise, penmanship(书法)-once taught so morally and carefully by second-grade teachers, has gone the way of the dodo bird which has died out. Yet to day?s kids are asked to write, thoughtfully and legibly, for several minutes on this SAT Test. Good luck to the test scorers who must work out difficultly the scrawl of young people who?ve been typing on computers since the age of three! Teachers i nsist that good handwriting can not only help one?s score on the SAT, but also, later on in life, impress potential employers and earn bigger tax refunds because the tax inspectors can actually read the computations. And don?t forget, we all have to resort to handwriting from rime to time, as computers go down when the power goes out.

1. The subjects to be tested in the SAT include .

A. math,English,reading and handwriting

B. math, grammar,reading and writing

C. math,foreign language and writing

D. math,English and handwriting

由第一段最后两句话“The Scholastic Aptitude Test muasures one?s mathematical ability and use of the English language. Traditionally, the English portion involved grammatical

questions and paragraphs that test read ing comprehension.”和第二段第一句话“But the SAT folks have added a single question , to be answered in an essay, hand-written on the spot.”

2.The author write this passage to introduce the fact that .

A. writing seems to be very important in the SAT

B. those who will go to colleges have to take the SAT

C. students should practice handwriting more often

D. at the computer age kids don?t know how to write.

3. What does the underlined word “scribble”probably mean?

A. write quickly and roughly

B. take notes difficultly

C. print penmanship carefully

D. describe written word generously

4. According to the passage good handwriting can .

A. help students get high scores in tests

B. make a student more popular

C. measure students?s ability

D. assist one to get a job

由文章最后一段“Teachers insist that good handwriting can not only help one?s score on the SAT, but also, later on in life, impress potential employers and earn bigger tax refunds because the tax inspectors can actually r ead the computations.”

C A new commodity brings about a highly profitable,fast-growing industry, urging antitrust(反垄断)regulators to step in to check those who control its flow. A century ago,the resource in question was oil. Now similar concerns are being raised by the giants(巨头)that deal in data, the oil of the digital age. The most valuable firms are Google,Amazon, Facebook and Microsoft. All look unstoppable. Such situations have led to calls for the tech giants to be broken up. But size alone is not a crime. The giants' success has benefited consumers. Few want to live without search engines or a quick delivery. Far from charging consumers high prices, many of these services are free (users pay, in effect, by handing over yet more data). And the appearance of new-born giants suggests that newcomers can make waves, too. But there is cause for concern. The internet has made data abundant, all-present and far more valuable, changing the nature of data and competition. Google initially used the data collected from users to target advertising better. But recently it has discovered that data can be turned into new services: translation and visual recognition, to be sold to other companies. Internet companies’ control of data gives them enormous power. So they have a “God’s eye view” of activities in their own markets and beyond. This nature of data makes the antitrust measures of the past less useful. Breaking up firms like Google into five small ones would not stop remaking

A To American visitors, Iceland is a very interesting country, partly because it is different in so many ways from what he or she is used to seeing at home. There are quite a few things that are not done, or that do not exist on the island —quite a few "No's". There is no pollution, for instance. No dogs are permitted in Reykjavik, the capital. There is no television on Thursdays or during the entire month of July, and only three hours of black-and-white TV the rest of the time. There is no hard liquor on Wednesdays and no beer at any time. There are no handguns; only one jail of thirty-five cells in the entire land —an admirable figure, even for a small country of 313,376 people. There is no army, air force or navy. There is no tipping for anything. There are no large stores open on Saturdays or Sundays. Since Iceland is situated just under the Arctic Circle, there is no darkness in summer and no daylight in winter. But thanks to Gulf Stream, the climate is rather mild, with temperatures ranging from 34 degrees Fahrenheit to 52 degrees in July. The rules on television, liquor, and guns are the result of governmental decision. But the absence of pollution is due in great part to the fact that Iceland gets its power from the enormous geyser(间歇泉and the thousands of hot springs that come out of the ground. They provide all the energy needed by the country. In fact, Iceland uses only 3 percent of all its available power. Iceland has been described as a democratic independent country where more fish are caught and more books published per person than anywhere else in the world. The Icelanders have always felt a particular love for literature. They composed their first works in the ninth and tenth centuries AD. These works were poems and tales about the kings, heroes, and heroines of Iceland and Norway. At first the stories were memorized

The accommodation wasn"t wonderful, but we had everything we needed (beds, blankets, food ), and we were pleased to be out of the city and in the fresh air. On Saturday morning we met the other ten members of our group. Cameron had come along with two friends, Kevin and Simon, while sisters Carole and Lynn had come with Amanda. There were some other members I didn"t know. We had come from different places and none of us knew the area. We knew we were going to spend the weekend outdoors, but none of us was sure exactly how. Half of us spent the morning caving while the others went rock-climbing and then we changed at lunchtime. Matt and I went to the caves (岩洞) first. Climbing out was harder than going in, but after a good deal of pushing, we were out at last. Though we were covered with mud, we were pleased and excited by what we"d done. This passage mainly talks about ______________. A. the writer"s friends at the Activity Center B. the writer"s experience at the Activity Center C. outdoor sports at the Activity Center D. how to go rock-climbing and caving

A Attending college can be expensive, and applying to college can be costly as well. With today’s college application fees averaging around $ 80, you can expect to spend hundreds of dollars on college before you are even accepted into a school. One of the easiest ways to save money on college application fees before you begin applying is to narrow down your list of schools. To save money, try to limit the schools to which you apply to about 2- reach schools and 2- safety schools. At some schools, being a relative of a graduate can secure you a free application. If you are applying to a school where one of your parents or grandparents is a former graduate, check to see if you’re qualified for it. Research the preferred method of applying for each school on your list. Some schools offer free online applications, yet charge a fee for paper submissions. This is because online applications save schools the cost of employing a staff member to physically enter the application information. Several states, such as Michigan and North Carolina, take part in College Application Week, where many schools in the participating states cancel their application fee for the week. Be sure to contact the schools to I j which you are applying to see if they participate in College Application Week and when the program takes place in that state. Apply for early admission. If you have already decided on which college is your top choice, consider applying under an Early Action or Early Decision admission program. If you are accepted, you won’t have to submit application fees to other schools. For more information regarding college applications and the fees associated with them, contact your high I school advisor or the admissions department at your school(s) of interest. 21.The passage is mainly written to______. A.introduce famous universities in the United Stales B.show some practical ways to apply an ideal college C.advertise for successful applications and advisors D.offer tips to save money on college application fees
