On Going a Journey

One of the pleasantest things in the world is going a journey:

but I like to go by myself. I can enjoy society in a room;

but out of doors, nature is company enough for me.

I am then never less alone than when alone.

"The fields his study, nature was his book."

I cannot see the wit of walking and talking at the same time.

When I am in the country I wish to vegetate like the country.

I am not for criticizing hedges and black cattle.

I go out for town in order to forget the town and all that is in it.

There are those who for this purpose go to watering places,矿泉疗养处

and carry the metropolis with them.

I like more space and fewer obstacles.

I like solitud e独居, when I give myself up to it, for the sake of solitude;

nor do I ask for "a friend in my retreat静养处,

whom I may whisper solitude is sweet."

The soul of journey is liberty自由, perfect liberty,

to think, feel, do, just as one pleases.

We go a journey chiefly to be free of all obstacles and all inconveniences不方便的;

to leave ourselves behind, much more to get rid of others.

It is because I want a little breathing space

to ponder on考虑indifferent matters,

where contemplation "May plume her feathers and let grow her wings, that in the various bustle of resort were all too ruffled,

and sometimes impaired."

I absent myself from the town for a while,

without feeling at a loss the moment I am left by myself.

Instead of a friend in a post chaise驿马车or in a carriage, to exchange good things with, and vary the same stale topics over again,

for once let me have a time free from manners.

Give me the clear blue sky over my head,

and the green turf草皮beneath my feet, a winding road before me, and the three hours' march to dinner — and then to thinking!

It is hard if I cannot start some game on these lone heaths.

I laugh, I run, I leap, I sing for joy!

From the point of yonder rolling cloud I plunge into my past being,

and revel there as the sun-burnt Indian plunges headlong into the wave

that wafts him to his native shore.

Then long-forgotten things like "sunken wrack and sumless treasuries",

burst upon my eager sight, and I begin to feel, think, and be myself again.

Instead of an awkward silence,

broken by attempts at wit or dull commonplaces,

mine is that undisturbed silence of the heart

which alone is perfect eloquence.

On Learning English

A correspondent记者 from the C zec h Republic捷克

as ks a powerful ques tion:“H ow would you encourage

E nglis h language learners at sec ondary

and pos tsec ondary schools;

what do they have to be c areful about

and what joys c an they expec t

when dealing with a language of

s ome 2 billion s peakers worldwide?”

I n a way, the ques tion ans wers its elf.

E nglis h enables you to c ommunic ate with

a third of the world's population,

and that has to be a plus on the agenda of anyone

with an international outlook. T hat third, moreover,

is hugely diverse. E nglish is present, as a first,

sec ond, or foreign language, in every c ountry in the world.

So, in us ing it as a tool,

you have an unparallelled不平行的 opportunity to

explore the individuality of nations and peoples.

T he metaphor of the tool is important.

E nglis h is not a pris m, through whic h you see others.

I t is a tool whic h enables you to

have a close enc ounter with others.

Culture is not wholly dependent on language,

but it does need language to explain its uniqueness—

an experienc e all travellers have had, as they watc h,

say, a local folk dance and wonder what it is all about.

H owever, the metaphor of the tool only goes s o far,

bec ause you can c hange the c haracter of the tool

to s uit your purpos es. I f you have adopted E nglis h

as one of your languages, then you are able to adapt it—

to take personal owners hip of it.

One of the great joys of making headway

in a new language is that you c an use it to talk about

what you want to talk about—and if

that means inventing new words,

to express your local experience,

then do not hes itate to invent them.

Jus t trans lating the c ulture of your sc hool

and town into E nglish—s uch as the names of localities

and pers onalities—will immediately add dozens of new express ions.

Don't restrict yourself to the words

that are already in the dic tionaries.

E nglis h is yours now. T he words and express ions

you and your fellows invent today might be

in the dictionaries of tomorrow, if they c atch on.

You're doing nothing that has n't already been done

thous ands of times before. N ew words were added to

E nglis h within days of the firs t settlers

arriving in America from Britain,

and the s ame pattern has been obs erved

in all countries where a community of us ers has evolved.

What you find yourselves doing you will s ee

being done els ewhere. So to adopt the motto of

the sc outing movement—be prepared.

Be prepared for linguis tic diversity, c hange,

playfulness, and c reativity wherever you lis ten

and look on radio and televis ion, in the press,

literature, film, pop mus ic, the internet...

Develop a sens e of the kind of E nglis h

that is appropriate to particular circ ums tanc es.

And make it your major aim to be s o

in control of your own E nglis h that you can vary it

to s uit the c irc umstances in whic h you find yourself.

Your goal is not to learn E nglis h, but E nglis hes.

T he s ame princ iple applies to any language, of c ourse,

but it is particularly important in the c ase of E nglish

bec ause of its global reach.

Storms Always Give Way to the Sun

What is the secret ingredient of tough people

that enables them to succeed?

Why do they survive the tough times

when others are ov ercome by them?

Why do they win w hen other sink?

The answer is very simple.

It's all in how they perceive their problems.

Yes, ev ery living person has problems.

A problem-f ree lif e is an illusion—a mirage in the desert.

Accept that f act. Every mountain has a peak.

Every valley has its low point. Lif e has its ups and dow ns,

its peaks and its valleys.

You may not be able to control the times,

but you can compose y our response.

You can turn y our pain into prof anity or into poetry.

The choice is up to y ou.

You may not have chosen your tough time,

but you can choose how you w ill react to it.

For instance, w hat is the positive reaction to

a terrible f inancial setback?

In this situation w ould it be the positive reaction to cop out and run away? Escape t hrough alcohol? No!

Such negative reactions only produce greater problems by promising a temporary “solution” to the pressing problem.

Your reaction to the problem is the last word!

What will you let this problem do to y ou?

It can make you tender or tough.

It can make you better or bitter. It all depends on y ou.

In the f inal analy sis, the tough people

who survive the tough times do so

because they'v e chosen to react positively to their predicament.

Tough times never last, but tough people do.

Tough people stick it out.

History teaches us that every problem has a lif espan.

No problem is permanent. Storms alway s give w ay to the sun.

Winter always thaws into springtime.

Your storm will pass. Your winter will thaw.

Your problem w ill be solv ed.

Relis h the Moment

T ucked away in our s ubconscious is an idyllic vis ion.

We s ee ourselves on a long trip that s pans the c ontinent.

We are traveling by train. O ut the window s,

we drink in the pass ing scene of c ars on nearby highways,

of c hildren waving at a c rossing, of cattle grazing on a dis tant hillside, of s moke pouring from a power plant, of row upon row of c orn and wheat, of flatlands and valleys, of mountains and rolling hills ides,

of c ity s kylines and village halls.

But uppermos t in our minds is the final destination.

O n a certain day at a certain hour, we will pull into the s tation.

Bands will be playing and flags waving.

Onc e we get there, s o many wonderful dreams will come true

and the pieces of our lives will fit together like a completed jigs aw puzzle.

H ow res tlessly we pace the ais les,

damning the minutes for loitering—waiting, waiting,

waiting for the s tation.

"When we reac h the s tation, that will be it!

"we c ry."When I'm 18. " "When I buy a new 450SL M ercedes Benz!"

"When I put the las t kid through c ollege."

"When I have paid off the mortgage!" "When I get a promotion."

"When I reach the age of retirement, I s hall live happily ever after!"

Sooner or later,

we mus t realize there is no station, no one place to arrive at once and for all.

T he true joy of life is the trip.

T he station is only a dream. I t c onstantly outdis tanc es us.

"Relis h the moment" is a good motto, es pecially when coupled with Ps alm 118∶24:"T his is the day whic h the Lord hath made;we will rejoic e and be glad in it."

I t is n't the burdens of today that drive men mad.

I t is the regrets over yesterday and the fear of tomorrow.

Regret and fear are twin thieves who rob us of today.

So s top pac ing the ais les and counting the miles.

I nstead, climb more mountains, eat more ice c ream, go barefoot more often,

s wim more rivers,

watc h more s uns ets, laugh more, c ry more.

Life must be lived as we go along.

T he s tation will c ome soon enough.

UNIT 1 Welcome to Insidermedicine In Depth. I'm Dr. Susan Sharma. Focusing time and energy on the most personally meaningful aspects of their work may help physicians avoid burnout, according to a survey published in the Archives of Internal Medicine. Here are some consequences of physician burnout, published in the Annals of Internal Medicine: ?Increased risk for substance abuse ?Damage to personal relationships, and ?Increased risk for developing inappropriate prescribing patterns Researchers from the Mayo Clinic in Rochester surveyed over 550 physicians in the department of internal medicine at a large academic medical center. The survey included questions about job satisfaction, emotional well-being, and the aspects of the jobs that were the most meaningful. As many as 34% of respondents met the criteria for burnout, including emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and a low sense of personal accomplishment. The 88% who said they spent at least 20% of their working time on activities they found to be the most meaningful had about half the burnout rate of those who did not. Today's research highlights the need to optimize career fit among physicians in order to reduce burnout rates. For Insidermedicine In Depth, I'm Dr. Susan Sharma.1 UNIT 2 So I work in marketing, which I love, but my first passion was physics, a passion brought to me by a wonderful school teacher, when I had a little less gray hair. So he taught me that physics is cool because it teaches us so much about the world around us. Tonight I'm going to spend the next few minutes trying to convince you that physics can teach us something about marketing. So, quick show of hands —Who studied some marketing in university? (Show of hands.) Who studied some physics in university? (Show of hands.) Ooh, pretty good. And at school? (Show of hands.) Okay, lots of you. So, hopefully this will bring back some happy, or possibly some slightly disturbing memories. (Laughter.) So, physics and marketing: We'll start with something very simple, Newton's law: "The force equals mass times acceleration." This is something that perhaps Turkish Airlines should have studied a bit more carefully (Laughter.) before they ran this campaign. (Laughter.) But if we rearrange this formula quickly, we can get to acceleration equals force over mass, which means that for a larger particle, a larger mass, it requires more force to change its direction. It's the same with brands. The more massive a brand, the more baggage it has, the more force is needed to change its positioning. And that's one of the reasons why Arthur Andersen chose to launch Accenture rather than try to persuade the world that Andersen's could stand for something other than accountancy. It explains why Hoover found it very difficult to persuade the world that it was more than vacuum cleaners, (Laughter.) and why companies like Unilever and P&G keep brands separate, like Oreo and Pringles and Dove, rather than having one giant parent brand. So the physics is (that) the bigger the mass of an object, the more force is needed to change its direction. The marketing is, the bigger a brand, the more difficult (it) is to reposition it. So think about a portfolio of brands or maybe new brands for new ventures. Now, who remembers Heisenberg's Uncertainty Principle? Getting a little more technical now. So this says that it's impossible, by definition, to measure exactly the state, i.e., the position, and the
