Johnny Appleseed was the name given to John Chapman. He planted large numbers of apple trees in what was the American wilderness two hundred years ago. Chapman grew trees and supplied apple seeds to settlers in the middle western Great Lakes area. Two centuries later, some of those trees still produce fruit.

Chapman planted with thoughts about future markets for his crops. His trees often grew in land near settlements. He often sold his apple seeds to settlers. Sometimes, he gave away trees to needy settlers.

Johnny Appleseed looked like someone who was poor and had no home. Y et he was a successful businessman. He used his money to improve his apple business and help other people. He was famous for his gentleness and bravery. Both settlers and native Americans liked him. Everywhere he traveled, he was welcomed.

During his travels, some families asked Johnny to join them for a meal. He would never sit down until he was sure that their children had enough to eat. He believed that it was wrong to kill and eat any creature for food. He believed that the soil produced everything necessary for humans.

Another time, he was trapped in the wilderness during a severe snowstorm. He found shelter in an old tree that had fallen to the ground. In the tree, he discovered a mother bear and her cubs. He did not interfere with the animals, and left before they knew he was there.

It is estimated that, during his lifetime, he planted enough trees to cover an area of about two hundred sixty thousand square kilometers. Over time, some adults said they remembered receiving presents from Johnny Appleseed when they were children.

In 1845, John Chapman became sick and developed pneumonia during a visit to Fort Wayne. He died

in the home of a friend, William Worth. Chapman was seventy years old. He was buried near Fort Wayne. The marker (碑文) over his burial place reads, “”

Before I tell you how many hours a day people spend watching content on tablets, TVs, phones and so forth, let?s talk quick about technology. The word, I mean, according to my dictionary?s primary definition, means “the application of scientific knowledge for practical purposes”.

These days, you say that word and I?d refer to most magic images of tablets, smartphones, digital cameras, satellites, cruise missiles, electric cars or glasses-free 3D handhelds. That?s all correct, of course—that stuff?s definitely technology, I mean. But so is a wheel, or a pencil, or if we?re going all the way back, it?s any tool, including something as simple as a stick snatched up and applied to some purpose, say, knocking something down for dinner or turning over a rock to get whatever?s und erneath.

The reason I raise the point is that the following poll (调查) implies that something different is happening when we pick up an electronic tablet instead of pencil and paper to compose an email, or an e-reader instead of a book to read something like the digital version of a magazine, or a novel by Stephen King. Those who view change as bad, or at least a little bit terrifying, may look at the numbers below and read ominous (不祥的) signs.

But okay, hold that thought, and let?s jump to the poll results.

The poll was conducted by Poll Position to determine “how many ho urs a day do you spend looking at

either a TV, computer screen, e-reader, PDA or cellphone?” The group asked that question of 1,220 registered voters, by phone, on November 19, 2011. Its generalized finding: 60% of Americans spend between one and six hours a day viewing content on electronic devices.

About a third spend one to three hours, another third spend four to six, and the remaining third spend between seven and more than 10 hours a day viewing content on electronic devices. Supposing most of us spend between 12 and 18 hours per 24-hour day awake, that?s a pretty high range of use, from one hour through 10 or more.

66. The purpose of the picture and the words below are to .

A. introduce a famous painting

B. show the popularity of electronic devices

C. recommend an exhibition on art

D. raise the topic to be discussed

67. What?s the main idea of the first paragraph?

A. There?s no hurry to announce the poll?s results.

B. What “technology” means in the writer?s dictionary.

C. The explanation to “technology” is more important than the poll?s results.

D. Technology has nothing to do with the poll?s results.

68. According to the text, what is the author?s opinion about the word “technology”?

A. It has changed the way of people?s everyday life.

B. It has brought great advantages and convenience to people.

C. It has different meanings in different times.

D. It includes more meanings than usually regarded.

69. According to the poll, the time people spend viewing content on electronic devices a day differs

from .

A. one to three hours

B. four to six hours

C. one to more than ten hours

D. seven to more than ten hours

70. What is the topic of this text?

A. How many hours a day people spend watching content on electronic devices.

B. The bad effects on people?s health caused by using electronic devices too often.

C. The proper time people take to use their electronic devices every day.

D. People waste too much time in watching content on electronic devices.

D

After moving to the United States, immigrant groups trying to fit in tend to choose high calorie fatty foods i n an attempt to appear more Ameri can, a new study finds. That?s one reason why immigrants approach US levels of obesity within 15 years of moving to America.

The researchers also did an experiment that measured whether or not the threat of appearing un-American influenced respondents?food choices. After being questioned about their ability to speak English, 75 percent of Asian-Americans identified a typical American food as their favorite. Only 25 percent of Asian-Americans who had not been asked if they spoke English did the same.

When their American identity was called into question during a follow-up study, Asian-American participants also tended to choose typical American dishes, such as hamburgers and cheese sandwiches. In that experiment, 55 Asian-Americans were asked to choose a meal from a local Asian or American restaurant. Some participants were toId that only Americans could participate in the study. Those who chose the more typical American fare ended up consuming an extra 182 calories, including 12 grams of fat and 7

grams of saturated fat

“People who feel like they need to prove they belong to a culture will change their habits in an attempt to fit in,” said Sauna Cheryan, an author of the study and assistant professor of psychology at the University of Washington. “If immigrants and their children choose unhealthy American foods over healthier traditional foods across their lives, this process of fittin g in could lead to poorer health.” Cheryan added.

Social pressures, the study concluded, are at the heart of the problem. “In American society today, being American is associated with being white. Americans, who don?t fit this image even if they were born here and speak English, feel that pressure to prove that they?re American,” said Cheryan.

71. The author wants to show that .

A. more and more Asians enjoy high-calorie snacks

B. immigrants tend to eat American junk food to fit in

C. most Americans are at the risk of heart disease

D. all the American people have a bad eating habit

72. According to the survey, .

A. Asian-Americans care less about their health

B. 25 percent of Americans like junk food

C. choosing food is related to Asian-Americans? situation

D. immigrants are forced to eat junk food

73. The underlined word “fare”in Paragraph 4 most probably means“”.

A. food offered as a meal

B. a person taking a taxi

C. money spent on food

D. an arranged thing to do

74. According to Sauna Cheryan, .

A. what immigrants have done is ridiculous

B. American traditional foods are healthier

C. immigrants risk their health in order to fit in

D. American culture affects immigrants deeply

75. Which of the following should take the blame for the bad eating habit?

A. The situation of employment.

B. The traditional culture.

C. The American government.

D. The pressures from society.

[1]Teachers and parents usually call attention to the pictures when they read storybooks to preschool children. But a new study suggests that calling attention to the words and letters on the page may lead to better readers. The two-year study compared children who were read to this way in class with children who were not. Those whose teachers most often discussed the print showed clearly higher skills in reading, spelling and understanding. These results were found one year and even two years later.

[2]If teachers get children to pay attention to letters and words, it makes sense that they will do better at word recognition and spelling. But research suggests that very few parents and teachers do this in a regular way.

[3]Now more than three hundred children aged four and five were read to the print in classrooms in Ohio and Virginia. The children came from poor families and were below average in their language skills. This put them at risk for later. For thirty weeks, the children took part in a program called Project STAR, for Sit Together and Read. The project is based at Ohio State. It tests the short-term and long-term results of reading regularly to preschool children in their classrooms.

[4] There are different ways in which adults can talk to children about print. They can point to a letter and discuss it, and even show the shape with a finger. They can point out a word: “This is …dog?”. They can discuss the meaning of the print or how the words tell the story. And they can talk about the organization of the print—for instance, showing how words are written left to right in English.

76. What benefits can children get if teachers call students? attention to the words and letters on the page?

(no more than 10 words)

77. When will the good results appear? (no more than 6 words)

78. Fill in the blank

80. Translate the underlined sentence in Paragraph 1 into Chinese.

Hello Peter! How are you going these days?

In order to provide us students with an opportunity to exchange books and make better use of used books, our Student Union held a campus book fair on the afternoon of Martch 15,2013.

At the book fair, students could sell unwanted books, buy needed books or simply trade books with each other. Like other fairs of this kind, prices were typically very low. Happily, I not only got rid of several books but also bought a few books I really wanted.

As far as I?m concerned, I like this activity, which is beneficial to us students. On the one hand, I felt my social skills had been well practiced and improved. On the other hand, this activity also gave us an excellent opportunity to feel a bit of the real world. I wish more events like this book fair would be held in our school. Looking forward to hearing from you!

Love,

Li Hua
