Hercules served a king. The king was afraid of him. So again and again he sent him on difficult tasks. One morning the king sent for him and told him to fetch three golden apples for him from the garden of the Singing Maidens. But no one knew where the garden was.

So Hercules went away. He walked the whole day and the next day and the next. He walked for months before he saw mountains far in the distance one fine morning. One of the mountains was in the shape of a man, with long, long legs and arms and huge shoulders and a huge head. He was holding up the sky. Hercules knew it was Atlas, the Mountain God. So he asked him for help.

Atlas answered, “My head and arms and shoulders all ache. Could you hold up the sky while I fetch the golden apples for you?”

Hercules climbed the mountain and shouldered the sky. Soon the sky grew very heavy. When finally Atlas came back with three golden apples, he said, “Well, you are going to carry the mountain forever. I?m going to see the king with the apples.” Hercules knew that he couldn?t fight him because of the sky on his back. So he shouted: “Just one minute?s help. My shoulders are hurting. Passage Three

Under proper conditions, sound waves will be reflected from a hillside or other such obstruction. Sound travels at the rate of about one fifth of a mile per second. If the hill is eleven hundred feet away, it takes less than two seconds for the sound to travel to the hill and back. Thus by timing the interval between a sound and its echo, one can estimate the distance to an obstruction.

During World War II the British applied the principle to practice to detect German planes on their way to bomb London long before they were near the target. They used radio waves instead of sound waves, since radio waves can penetrate fog and clouds, which so very often filled the skies of the islands. On each of their missions the Germans were very much puzzled to find the outnumbered Royal Air Force lying in wait at the right time and right place. It was radio echoes more than anything else that won the Battle of Britain.

Since the radio waves were used to tell the direction in which to send the RAF planes and the distance to send them, the device was called radio detecting and ranging, and from the initials the word radar was coined.

Passage Four

Business action taken today must be based on yesterday?s plan and tomorrow?s expectations. Plans for the future can?t be made without forecasting events and their relationships. And not only may forecasting be made for a given type of activity independently, the forecast of one type of event may also be based on other forecasts. Thus, the estimate of population growth for the next decade is an element in the forecast of future demand for steel which, in turn, is the basis for plans for expanding plant capacities. Similarly, forecasts of national income are used by the Government to estimate its future revenue, and by industries to predict their national market demand. Of course, an individual firm can base its forecast of sales on the forecasts of sales for the whole industry.

While management has long recognized the importance of business forecasting in decisions and action, the activity itself has remained an inexact science, and those who recall the predictions of “prosperity just around the corner” in 1930, or the forecasts by Government for the spring of 1946, may dispute the assertion that it is a science at all. But despite such doubts, forecasting must be done. The question is not “Forecast or no forecast?”but rather, “What kind of forecast?”Moreover, for management the value of a forecast is not merely its relative accuracy, but the fact that making it requires a balanced consideration of all ascertainable factors influencing future developments.

The fact that the past can never be a perfect guide to the future warns us that forecasting should not be thought of as a routine application of some techniques or theoretical ideas to a list of unchanging variables. Successful forecasting requires expert mixing of economic theory and thorough familiarity with the relevant statistical data. It should use both quantitative and qualitative information. The forecaster must have the ability to distinguish between new facts that are important and those are not. He must be competent to judge under what conditions past relationships can be relied upon and when they can?t. He must be able to understand the effects of non-measurable socio-economic and political forces upon business activities.

86. According to the passage, which of the following is true?

A. Yesterday?s plan and tomorrow?s expectation both affect business action taken today.

B. There is no relationship between population and plant capacities in business forecasting.

C. One forecast can?t be served as a basis for other forecasts.

D. Forecasting must be made by experts.

87. The word “decade” in paragraph one can be substituted for ____ .

A. twenty years

B. ten years

88. The main idea of the second paragraph is that _____ .

A. business forecasting is an inexact science

B. forecasting is not a science at all

C. the influence of business forecasting can be neglected

D. business forecasting is very important

89. What does the phrase “around the corner” in the second paragraph mean?

A. “near to the corner”

B. “very near in distance”

C. “very near in time”

D. “at the corner”

90. According to the author, business forecasting _____ .

A. requires quantitative and qualitative information

B. can be made without taking into consideration business action taken today

C. is affected by the socio-economic and political force

D. both A and C

Part IV. Reading Comprehension

Directions: There are four passages in this part. Each passage is followed by five questions. For each question there are four choices marked A. B. C. and D. You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center.

Passage One

Every land has its own dining custom, and the United States is no exception. Americans feel that the first rule of being a polite guest is to be on time. If a person is invited to dinner at 6:30, the hostess expects him to be there at 6:30 or not more than a few minutes after. Because she usually does her own cooking, she times the meal so that the coffee and meat will be at their best at the time she asks the guest to come. If he is late, the food will not be so good, and the hostess will be disappointed. When the guest can not come on time, he calls his host or hostess on the telephone, gives the reason, and tells at what time he thinks he can come.

As guests continue to arrive, the men in the group stand when a woman enters and remain standing until she has found a chair. A man always rises when he is being introduced to a woman.

A woman does not rise when she is being introduced either to a man or a woman unless the woman is much older.

When the guests sit down at a dinner table, it is customary for the men to help the ladies by pushing their chairs under them.

Even an American may be confused by the number of knives, forks and spoons beside his plate when he sits down to a formal dinner. The rule is simple, however: Use them in the order in which they lie, beginning from the outside. Or watch the hostess and do what she does. The small fork on the outside on the left is for salad, which is often served with the soup. The spoon on the outside at the right is for soup, and so on. Sometimes there is a separate little knife, called a butter spreader, on a small bread-and-butter plate at the left. As the bread is passed, each guest puts his piece on the bread-and-butter plate.

71. The passage is mainly about _____ .

A. how to accept other people?s invitation to dinner

B. how to behave properly before and at dinner

C. how to be polite to ladies at dinner

D. how to use the right kinds of knives and forks

72. In order to be a polite guest, the first thing one has to do is _____ .

A. to arrive 30 minutes earlier

B. to phone the hostess before arrival

C. not to bring too many presents

D. not to be late for dinner

73. When both a man and a woman are introduced to another woman about their age, who

Passage Two

Before Odysseus left Circe?s island to continue his voyage home, Circe gave him the following advice: “You must be careful when you go past the Island of the Sirens. The Sirens are beautiful birds with girl?s face and birds?feet and feathers. They have such sweet voices that everyone who hears them has to sail nearest to see who is singing. Sailors who go to that coast are killed on the rocks.”

“When you go past their island, you must put wax in the ears of your sailors so that they will not hear the sweet songs of the Sirens. But if you yourself want to hear their beautiful songs, ask your men to tie you to the mast of the ship. Tell them not to set you free, even if you order them to do so.”

Odysseus said goodbye to Circe and sailed away with his men. When the ship came near the Island of the Sirens, he took Circe?s advice and put wax in the ears of his sailors, he asked them to tie him to the mast with strong ropes and made them promise that would not set him free, even if he ordered them to do so.

The ship came closer to the Island of the Sirens. The Sirens sang so sweetly that Odysseus shouted to his men and ordered them to untie him. The voices of the Sirens called him and he wanted to go to them. He was very angry with his sailors and said he would kill them if they did not untie him. But the sailors obeyed his earlier orders and did not listen to him. Passage Three

People think that all solicitors are rich and prosperous. In any town there are, of course, rich and prosperous solicitors, but there are also solicitors like me. I am neither rich nor prosperous. I have an office over a fish and chip shop, for which I pay an exorbitant rent, and two rather inefficient secretaries.

I suppose it is because my premises are in the less fashionable part of the town, but my clients always seem to have enormous problems and miserable incomes. Mr. Pollard was exactly that sort of client. He was a small, untidy little man, with a large head and round, old-fashioned spectacles.

“I have a problem,” he began nervously, “I bought this house, you see. I got a mortgage from the building society, but then I lost my job, so I got behind with the payments.” He gave me the details. It appeared that he owed eleven payments of $50, and had no job and no money. Not surprisingly the building society had written to say they intended to take possession of the house, sell it, and thus get back their money.

“What would happen if they sold it for less than I paid?” he asked. “Would I get back any money?”

“Probably not,” I replied.

“Would you mind telephoning the building society?”he pleaded, “and see if they could possibly give me a little more time?”

“If you?re not earning any money, how will more time help?”I asked. He looked at me hopelessly.

In the end the house was sold. The building society debt was paid off, and Mr. Pollard got $60.

A. He couldn?t afford the rent each month.

B. He lost his job in the building society.

C. He owed the building society some money.

D. The building society intended to sell the house to other people.

84. It can be inferred from this passage that _____ .

A. all the solicitors are very rich and prosperous.

B. Mr. Pollard is a rich person because he can afford a house

C. building society should take possession of Mr. Pollard?s house

D. the writer was not so successful because his clients are usually very poor.

At this stage nearly all the teachers are women, mostly married.
