Night travel of Wuhan on the Yangtze River

Good morning, ladies and gentlemen, Welcome to Wuhan.

My name is Zhangwei, and you can call me Vivien. I am from Wuhan travel service and I will be your local guide during your stay in Wuhan. This is our driver, Mr. Wang. His bus number is WH12345.On behalf of my travel agency; we hope you have a nice journey here. If you have any special interest, please tell your tour leader, and he will let us know. My job is to smooth your way, care for your welfare, try my best to answer your questions, and be your guide and interpreter. I will try to do my best to help you. We highly appreciate your understanding and cooperation.

Now we are on the cruise along the Yangtze River. At first, I would like to give you the itinerary route. Boarding the cruise ship at the quay of Wuhan harbor——going upstream——the temple of dragon king——Qing chuan bridge——the south bank peninsular——Qing chuan pavilion——the Wuhan Yangtze river bridge——the gate of Han yang——going downstream——the concessions and bund of Wuhan——debarking in the Wuhan harbor.

Now let me give you a description of the overview of Wuhan city. Wuhan is the provincial capital of Hubei province, its total area is 8467 square km and its population is 8.32 million. It is the largest city of central china and the sixth largest city all over the country too. It is located at the joint of Han River and the Yangtze River cross the city proper of Wuhan. Wuhan is a triple-city, on the north of the Yangtze River are Hankou and Hanyang, and on the south is Wuchang. Our Wuhan people were born and are living by the Yangtze River, relying on the golden waterway and convenient traffic formed by the Yangtze River and the Han River, out hard work and wisdom, we have built this beautiful city. If you have ever come to Wuhan before, I think tonight’s trip will make you and me remind of the past of Wuhan; if this is the first time for you to come to Wuhan, you will see the real presence and thriving future of Wuhan.

Now, ladies and gentlemen! This is the best position for us to enjoy the concessions and bund of Wuhan. The high towering building firstly coming into our eyes is the Jiali plaza, it was built by Wuhan and the Jiali group of Hong Kong jointly, and it’s 251 meters high and 61 stories with a construction area of 245,000 square meters, its gross investment is 1.75 billion RMB, it came into operation in 1997. From the first story to the eighth story are the Wangfujing department store and the Jiali department store; above the eighth floor are business offices.

Now please have a look at this old building with a great bell on its top, its original name is the Jianghanguan building which is located at the south end of the Yanjiang road of Hankou. This building belonged to Britain concession

in old times, it was designed by a famous British architect, began to be built in 1922 and completed in 1924. Originally it was under the jurisdiction of customs of the Britain’s general tax bureau, the building amounts to 8 stories; its total height is 46 meters. The main structure and the bell tower are both four stories respectively. The bell tower is equipped with a huge clock whose diameter is four meters with a hand of 1.5 meters, it plays music on time and its sound spreads the three towns of Wuhan. The whole European renaissance period, it was ever the landmark building of the present concessions area of Wuhan. Now it’s used the office building of the Wuhan customs.

Ladies and Gentlemen: as the ship keeps going downstream along the river, we can see over 100 western-style buildings on the north bank of the Yangtze river, they are the concessions ever occupied by some imperialist powers in 1861 after the second opium war. According to the unfair treaty, Hankou was opened up for foreign trading port. In the riverine area of 187 hectares are the concessions of five countries: Great Britain, Russia, France, Germany and Japan sequentially, the concessions had occupied 2/5 of the urban area in Hankou at that time. Until 1945 after anti-Japanese war, Wuhan people regained all concessions formally, and ended the disgraceful history of 85 years of imperialists’ setting up the concessions in Hankou. Nowadays, the remained ones are only the buildings of ancient Greece, baroque, Victoria and byzantine type of various countries; they have already become the cultural heritage of Wuhan in modern times. Wuhan bund has integrated with the riverine and historical landscape of Wuhan along the Yangtze River. It’s beautiful, flourishing and graceful.

Now, everyone look at your right side. This is Wuhan harbor. Its full name is the Passenger Station of Wuhan Harbor which was the key project of the Ministry of Communication and the 7th”Five-Year Plan” of Wuhan. It is the largest harbor of inland China and the biggest passenger station along the Yangtze River. Now Wuhan harbor has already become a new scenic spot of Wuhan city. Seen in distance, it’s just like a giant ship setting out to sail, and the five fully-covered passenger routes stretching into the river look like five huge dragons playing with water and crossing the river. This shows the unique and imposing manner of Wuhan standing proudly on the tide.

How time flies! Our night Yangtze River trip is over, after you disembark; please follow me to visit the Jianghan commercial walking street! Thank you very much!

Part I Reading Comprehension (2’×20 = 40 points) Directions:In this part of the test, there will be 5 passages for you to read. Each passage is followed by 4 questions or unfinished statements, and each question or unfinished statement is followed by four choices marked A, B, C and D. You are to decide on the best choice by blackening the corresponding letter on the ANSWER SHEET. Passage One Mr Gordon is right that the second industrial revolution involved never-to-be-repeated changes. But that does not mean that driverless cars count for nothing. Messrs Erixon and Weigel are also right to worry about the West’s dismal recent record in producing new companies. But many old firms are not run by bureaucrats and have reinvented themselves many times over: General Electric must be on at least its ninth life. And the impact of giant new firms born in the past 20 years such as Uber, Google and Facebook should not be underestimated: they have all the Schumpeterian characteristics the authors admire. On the pessimists’ side the strongest argument relies not on closely watching corporate and investor behavior but rather on macro-level statistics on productivity. The figures from recent years are truly dismal. Karim Foda, of the Brookings Institution, calculates that labor productivity in the rich world is growing at its slowest rate since 1950. Total factor productivity (which tries to measure innovation) has grown at just 0.1% in advanced economies since 2004, well below its historical average. Optimists have two retorts. The first is that there must be something wrong with the figures. One possibility is that they fail to count the huge consumer surplus given away free of charge on the internet. But this is unconvincing. The official figures may well be understating the impact of the internet revolution, just as they downplayed the impact of electricity and cars in the past, but they are not understating it enough to explain the recent decline in productivity growth. Another, second line of argument that the productivity revolution has only just begun is more persuasive. Over the past decade many IT companies may have focused on things that were more “fun than fundamental” in Paul Krugman’s phrase. But Silicon Valley’s best companies are certainly focusing on things that change the material world.

Unfortunately, not all these changes did good to the human society. Some of them have done serious damage to mankind and have been even predicted to destroy the whole world someday if out of control.

这篇课文的题目是Never, ever give up! 1.What's success? 2.What do you think are the secrets of success? What are the three steps mentioned in the talk to make one's dreams come true?
