General and specific

Some words are specific and some general. In our actual writing we’d better choose the specific ones to make our writing clear, exact, vivid, and striking.

For example, if I say, “She is a good woman.”, you will just have a vague impression about her. She is not bad. But how good is she? You don’t know. But if I change the word “good” to other more specific words, such as “kind, brave, honorable, sympathetic, warm-hearted, selfless, just, generous”, her image will be much clearer in your mind. That is the advantage of the specific words.

Another example, when I say the food is good, you still don’t know what the food is like, but if I say the food is tasty ( or delicious, nourishing, wholesome, fresh, appetizing, rich), then the food seems to be much concrete to you.

If I say “She laughs often”. You don’t know the exact action of her laugh. But if I use such verbs as “smile, grin, beam, giggle, titter, snigger, chuckle, guffaw’, you can imagine her facial expressions.

In a sense, try to make your writing as specific as possible.
