Passage One

Questions 61 to 65 are based on the following passage:

Psychology and sociology both belong to social sciences, and both study human behavior. However, psychology is the study of individual behavior, whereas sociology is the study of group behavior. Psychology deals with the possible problems an individual might have in social interaction with other individuals, but the main concern of sociology is the ways that different societies with different cultures deal with each other.

Sociology asks and tries to answer questions like these: why does one society progress rapidly and another one remain primitive for centuries? What is the main reason for revolution in a society? What is the role of religion or art in a society?

Psychology asks and tries to answer questions like these: why does an individual adjust easily to a changing environment and another individual become mentally disturbed? What are the causes of antisocial behavior? What role does religion or art play in an individual's mental and emotional life?

Psychology and sociology often work together in their study of human behavior. It is assumed that by better understanding individual motivation and behavior, more will be learned about group motivation and behavior. Passage Two

Questions 66 to 70 are based on the following passage:

Life is difficult.

This is a great truth. It is a great truth because once we truly understand and accept it, then

life is no longer difficult.

Most people do not fully see this truth. Instead, they complain about their problems and difficulties as if life should be easy. It seems to them that their difficulties represent a special kind of

suffering especially forced upon them or else upon their families, their class, or even their nation.

Life is a series of problems. Do we want to complain about them or solve them?

What makes life difficult is that the process of facing and solving problems is a painful one. Problems, depending on their nature, cause in us sadness or loneliness or regret or anger or fear. These are uncomfortable feelings, often as painful as any kind of physical pain. Indeed, it is be- cause of the pain which we have experienced that we call them problems. And since life causes an endless series of problems, life is always difficult and is full of pain as well as joy.

Yet, it is in this whole process of solving problems that life has its meaning. Problems are

the serious test that distinguishes between success and failure. It is only because of problems that we grow mentally and spiritually. When we desire to encourage the growth of the human spirit, we challenge and encourage the human capacity to solve problems, just as in school we set problems for our children to solve. It is through the pain of meeting and working out problems that we learn. As Benjamin Franklin said, "Those things that hurt, instruct." It is for this reason that wise people learn not to fear but actually to welcome the pain of problems.

69. According to the passage, we give school children difficult problems to solve in order to____.

A) challenge them to learn B) teach them to avoid the pain of solving problems

C) help them learn to ignore pain D) teach them to have respect for authority

70. The quotation from Benjamin Franklin, "Those things that hurt, instruct" suggests that_____.

A) we do not learn from experience B) we do not learn when we are in pain

C) pain teaches us important lessons D) pain cannot be avoided

Passage Three

Questions 71 to 75 are based on the following passage:

America has long had the reputation of being a "land of opportunity", but homelessness among American families with children is an open secret. Not long ago, the miserable condition of children in homeless families was seen as a national shame by the general public, requiring urgent action. Major magazines contained cover stories about them; rock concerts devoted their proceeds (收益) to them. Politicians promised to deal with the matter as soon as possible. The attention has died down with the 1990s, even though there are no fewer homeless families in the country today. But now there are more shelters. If homeless families have shelters and hotels to stay in, the illusion is created that their problems are being taken care of. The reality, however, is to the contrary: their needs are not being met. Shelters and hotels can never take the place of a stable home, and they were never intended to. But, in the absence of a national effort to find solutions to homelessness, shelters and hotels have become housing, by another name, for America's poorest families.

It's hard to understand how such an affluent society could produce so many poor families in need of housing and so much else, and do so little to help them. Homelessness, after all, is an aspect of poverty, which affects not thousands, but millions of Americans. Its economic, political, and social causes have been under heated discussion for decades. One thing is certain: unless and until the fundamental problems are dealt with, the shelters will always have a fresh supply of poor families.

Part 1V Reading Comprehension

Passage One

Questions 61 to 65 are based on the following passage.

Although machines have been around for a long time and people have adapted easily to living with most of them, they haven't yet learned how to get along with the newest of these- the personal computer. This is so because the widespread use of the personal computer is a relatively new phenomenon.

There was the well-known case of a family man who became m attached to his computer that he spent long hours with it. Of course, if he was spending long hours with his computer, he was spending less time with his family. And if his wife needed to see him, he was unavailable. She became so upset that she declared that unless he spent fewer hours with the machine and more with her and the family, she was going to divorce( 与……离婚) him. This issue became so serious that the couple had to seek help from a specialist. Fortunately, the husband reduced the time he spent with the computer, and the marriage was saved.

Personal computers may cause people to become isolated from one another since work can be one at home alone. In this case, there may be no need for offices, or for that matter, for any other central gathering place. Universities, or even cities, would become unnecessary. Moreover, if what is now recorded on paper is recorded in the computer instead, people will have no reason to use any paper at all: no money, receipts, letters, newspapers, magazines, books, and so on. If this happens, there will be no need to go to the bank, the newsstand, the bookstore, or the library. Will people then be isolated in their separate homes'--alone with their computers and their families, apart from fellow workers, readers, or students?

Questions 66 to 70 are based on the following passage:

I was 10 years old that Saturday in 1963. There was a knock at the door, and after I opened it I was surprised to see a group of five strange men standing there. I quickly shut the door and ran to get my father. I had been told many times before not to answer the door unless one of my parents had told me to, and now I understood why: these five men were without a doubt the first fifth of that famous "25 robbers at my door" from the old hide-and-seek rhyme(童谣), and I had almost let them in!

In fear I said something to my father about a group of robbers at the door, and he said, "Good. They're right on time." Much to my shock, Dad not only let them in but also shook all of their hands.

The men all worked at Fisher Body Plant No. 1 with my father, and they sat where he told them to at our dining room table. Dad then passed out pencils and paper and, from a box he had brought home earlier that day, handed each of them a printed sheet of paper with a series of math questions on it.

" We' ll start with fractions," Dad said. "How to find the lowest common denominator(公分母)..." The men came for three hours every Saturday, Sunday, Wednesday and Friday for the next two months. Dad explained that they had taken a test at the factory to be promoted to skilled jobs and none had passed the math part. This test was said to be the reason why there was a very small percentage of African-Americans in any skilled job at Fisher Body. Dad said he knew they could do the job if they were given a chance. I understood what my father was doing, but it wasn't until many years later that I appreciated it.

I remember the great joy on my father' s face when he came home from work one day and told my mother, "They all passed! The managers even want John to take the test again. They think he cheated somehow. He scored perfect on the math!"

Questions 71 to 75 are based on the following passage:

Every artist knows in his heart that he is saying something to the public. Not only does he want to say it well, but he also wants it to be something that has not been said before. He hopes the public will listen and understand--he wants to teach them, and he wants them to learn from him.

What visual artists(视觉艺术家) like painters want to teach is easy to see but difficult to explain, because painters turn their experiences into shapes and colors, not words. They seem to feel that a certain selection of shapes and colors, out of the countless billions possible, is particularly interesting for them and worth showing to us. Without their work, we would never enjoy these particular shapes and colors, or feel the delight which they brought to the artist.

Most artists take their shapes and colors from nature and from human bodies in motion and rest; their choices indicate that these aspects of the world are worth looking at, and that they contain beautiful sights. Some present-day artists might say that they merely choose subjects that provide an interesting pattern, and that there is nothing more to it. Yet these artists do not completely ignore the character of their subjects.

If one painter chooses to paint a gangrenous(腐烂的) leg and another a lake in moonlight, each of them is directing our attention to a certain aspect of the world. Each painter is telling us something, showing us something, emphasizing something--all of which means that, consciously or unconsciously, he is trying to teach us.

C) subjects chosen partly for their meanings D) completely meaningless characters

Part 1V Reading Comprehension

Passage One

Questions 61 to 65 are based on the following passage:

Industrial pollution is not only a problem for the countries of Europe and North America. It is also an extremely serious problem in some developing countries. For these countries, economic growth is a very important goal. They want to attract new industries, and so they put few controls on industries which cause pollution.

Cubatao, an industrial town of 85,000 people in Brazil, is an example of the connection between industrial development and pollution. In 1954, Cubatao had no industry. Today it has more than twenty large factories, which produce many pollutants (法染物质). The people of the town are exposed to a large number of poisonous substances in their environment and the consequences of this exposure can be clearly seen. Birth defects are extremely common. Among children and adults, lung problems are sometimes twelve times more common in Cubatao than in other places.

It is true that Brazil, like many other countries, has laws against pollution, but these laws are not enforced strictly enough. It is cheaper for companies to ignore the laws and pay the fines than to buy the expensive' equipment that will reduce the pollution. It is clear, therefore, that economic growth is more important to the government than the health of the workers. However, the responsibility 'does not completely lie with the Brazilian government. The example of Cubatao shows that international companies are not acting in a responsible way, either. A number of the factories in the town are owned by large companies from France, Italy, and the U.S. They are doing things in Brazil that they would not be able to do at home. If they caused the same amount of pollution at home, they would be severely punished or even put out of business.

61. Why don't developing countries have strict pollution controls.'?

A) Because the new industries they want to attract do not cause much pollution.

B) Because pollution is not a serious problem for developing countries.

C) Because they fail to realize that the balance of nature will be disturbed by some pollutants.

D) Because if developing countries put stricter controls on industry, fewer companies would build new plants there.

62. What is the author's purpose in mentioning Cubatao?

A) To show that industrial development can progress very quickly in developing countries.

B) To show that the pollution problem in Brazil is extremely serious.

C) To show that industrial growth causes pollution problems for developing countries.

D) To show that pollution is threatening the lives of many people and the whole economy of Brazil.

63. Why do some foreign companies like to set up their plants in Brazil?

A) Because the investment environment in Brazil is suitable for them.

B) Because they will not be severely punished if they cause pollution in Brazil.

C) Because they can make a big profit as the labour cost in Brazil is relatively low.

D) Because they can act in an irresponsible way in Brazil because there are no pollution laws there.

64. The word "enforced"(L. 2, Para. 3) could best be replaced by which of the following?

A) Carried out B) drawn up C) looked over D) put out

65. What can we conclude from the passage?

A) In Brazil, companies which ignore pollution laws have to pay fines.

B) The Brazilian government pays great attention to the health of workers.

C) Many foreign companies are out of business in Brazil for their pollution.

D) Most international companies act responsibly in Brazil.

Passage Two

Questions 66 to 70 are based on the following passage:

In 1947 Angela Mortimer was captain of the team which won the Plymouth Interschools' Championship. From the moment she stepped forward to receive the silver cup, she was determined to become a Wimbledon Champion.

Encouraged by her school championship success, Angela decided that she should have proper coaching. She heard that there was a good tennis coach at Torquay, a Mr. Roberts, who was prepared to give free tennis lessons to promising youngsters under twelve years of age and living in the Torquay area. The fact that Angela was over fifteen did not stop her. One Saturday, she made the forty-mile journey from Plymouth to Torquay and introduced herself to Mr. Roberts. Arthur Roberts was not impressed. He played a few shots to Angela and then told her directly that she knew nothing about the game and was too old to learn. He also reminded her that she lived in Plymouth, which could hardly be considered in the Torquay area.

If Arthur Roberts thought he had got rid of Angela, he was very much mistaken. For her part Angela had been greatly impressed by Mr. Roberts. She made up her mind that she was not too old to learn tennis and that Arthur Robetts was the man to teach her. However, her school certificate examination was appearing ahead and she was determined to work hard . Although the headmaster wanted her to stay on at school for another year before taking her examination, Angela begged to be allowed to sit. She surprised everyone by passing with credit in five subjects.

Angela then had a stroke of luck. She managed to persuade her family to move nearer to Torquay. Despite what had taken place at their last meeting, Angela properly presented herself to Arthur Roberts and asked him for free coaching. Arthur's welcome was not a warm one. His time was fully occupied in coaching some promising young players. However, he had to admire Angela. Whatever else she lacked, she was obviously a girl of courage and determination. Arthur liked these qualities in a pupil. "You can play against the wall," he mid, "and if you improve I might help you."

Angela's heart leapt with joy. "I'11 show him," she said to herself. "I will certainly show him."

66. According to the passage, Arthur Roberts

69. Why did Angela's parents move away from Plymouth?

A) Because Plymouth was too far from Wimbledon.

B) Because Angela wanted to move closer to Mr. Roberts.

C) Because Angela was asked by Mr. Roberts to do so.

D) Because they would send Angela to a better school them.

70. What can we infer from this passage about Mr. Roberts?

A) He believed Angela could improve by playing against the wall.

B) He thought Angela lacked courage and determination.

C) He would possibly help Angela later. D) He was too busy to coach Angela.

Passage Three

Questions 71 to 75 are based on the following passage:

All over the world, telecommunications companies are thinking wireless. They are spending billions of dollars building transmission towers (发射塔), launching satellites and developing lowcost hand-held phones, all with the goal of ending the century and a half old dominance(主宰)of the wire.

Since telegraph service began in 1844, most two-way communications have been not person-to-person but place-to-place. If two people aren't in the spots that the wire links, they don' t connect.

Now, with advances in microelectronics and satellite technology, companies are producing systems that seek out people wherever they are, keeping them in touch. The services are coming into use rapidly in the United States, Europe and the growing economies of East Asia.

Mobile phones are the most dramatic example to date. The number in use in the United States passed the 25 million mark last month, with no end to the growth in sight. In little more than a decade, the mobile phone has developed from expensive business tool and status symbol to something used by roughly one in 10 Americans.

Not everyone welcomes the change, Wireless phones are showing up in churches, courtrooms and airplanes, places where the noise of the outside world was once shut out. Nevertheless, there is no stopping the technology' s advance.

It's coming down to the lower-income levels," said Tom Ross of MTA-EMCI, a Washing-ton-based telecommunications company. "It's slowly becoming a necessity of life."

Now authorities in many countries are clearing up new space on the radio spectrum ( 无线频谱) for a new collection of wireless services. They are known as personal communications services, or PCS. In its simplest form, PCS is just another name for pocket phones. But companies are preparing a wide variety of "smart networks" and data services that will do things that ordinary mobile phones can' t.

Part 1V Reading Comprehension

Passage One

Questions 61 to 65 are based on the following passage:

On May 29, 1973, Thomas Bradley, a black man, was elected mayor of Los Angeles. Los Angeles is the third largest city in the United States, with a population of three million. About sixteen percent of the city's population are black.

News of this election appeared on the front pages of newspapers everywhere in the United States. Here is how one major newspaper reported the event: Los Angeles Elects Bradley Mayor, Defeating Yorty--Black Win 56 % of V otes

Bradley called his victory "the fulfillment of a dream." During his childhood and youth, people had kept telling him, "You can' t do this, you can' t go there, because you' re a Negro." Nevertheless he had won a decisive victory over a man who had been the city' s mayor for three times. Bradley had won 56.3 percent of the votes; Yorty had won 43.7 percent.

Los Angeles voters had many opportunities to judge Thomas Bradley and to form an opinion of him. The son of a poor farmer from Texas, he joined the Los Angeles police force in 1940. During his twenty-one years on the police force he earned a law degree by attending school at night. He was elected to .the city council ten years ago. At the time of Los Angeles election three other American cities already had black mayors, but none of those cities had as large a population as Los Angeles. Besides, the percentage of blacks in those other cities was much larger. Cleveland, Ohio, was thirty-six percent black when Carl Stokes was elected mayor of Cleveland in 1967. In the same year Richard Hatcher was elected mayor of Gary, Indiana, which was fifty-five percent black. In Newark, New Jersey, sixty percent of the population were black when Kenneth Glibson was elected in 1970. Thus the election of a black mayor in those cities was not very surprising.

In Los Angeles thousands of white citizens voted for Thomas Bradley because they believe he would be a better mayor than the white candidate. Bradley had spent forty-eight of his fifty-five years in Los Angeles. Four years ago Bradley lost the mayoral election to Yorty. This time Bradley won.

61. Thomas Bradley was elected mayor of Los Angeles because_____.

A) Los Angeles. B) Cleveland. C) Gary. D) Newark.

64. We may infer from the third paragraph, that Los .Angeles voters _____.

B) Because they expected him to do a better job.

C) Because he held a law degree from a good university.

D) Because they simply wanted to give him a chance,

Passage Two

Questions 66 to 70 are based on the following passage.

The U. S generates about four billion tons of solid waste a year. More than 90 percent is composed of agricultural and mining wastes. About 3 percent is from industrial wastes. 250 million tons of garbage comes out from homes, schools, office buildings, stores and hospitals This mass of metals, paper, food. plastic, rubber and glass, which is all mixed together, seems of no earthly use to anyone.

or is it? Many efforts across the country indicate that new technology, properly applied. might some day turn these millions of tons of garbage into an excellent source of raw materials for new uses.

Several new projects are carried out to study the possibility of treating wastes through pyrolysis--a system of reducing garbage to basic chemicals, liquids and gases which have commercial value. In Florida, a special tube system provides automatic transport of garbage to a central collection building.

In short, many new ideas are being tested, and many will be needed, since no one method is likely to prove suitable everywhere.

however, many difficult economic and social questions must be answered before real progress can be made. Can recovered materials compete with new materials? What will be needed as encouragement to .lake resource recovery work? Will citizens pay the cost of changing our waste system?

66 The author suggests that garbage from home and public places _____.

B) The present systems have been widely used.

C) Different methods are required in different places.

D) No garbage has been proved useful everywhere.

70. It can be implied from the last paragraph that______.

A) great progress has already been made in resource recovery

B) recovered materials will be able to compete with new materials

C) working people in the U.S. have been encouraged to recover solid waste

D) citizens may be unwilling to pay the costs of changing the waste system

Passage Three

Questions 71 to 75 are based on the following passage:

Kate, a student in 8th grade, asked lots of questions in math class---until the teacher told her to stop. "He said I was confusing the other kids with my questions," she recalls. "When boys asked questions, he took them a lot more seriously."

You might have thought that such obvious forms of discrimination (歧视)had ended by now. But Esther Greenglass, a psychology professor at York University in Toronto, says many recent studies have found that girls may still be faced with mixed messages about self-confidence and success, which can lower their self-esteem and discourage them from achieving their potential.

The problem worsens at about age 11or 12 , when girls start hitting puberty (青春期)and discovering boys. Many girls' grades drop, and so does their self-esteem. "Girls get the message that, if you're going to be popular, you can't be too smart because the boys won't like you," says Greenglass, who has written extensively on sex roles and discrimination.

Often , girls also sense that boys are considered-more capable. In studies in the United States, researchers found that when teachers asked questions, they almost always made eye contact with boys, unless they had attended courses raising their level of awareness. Adding to the problem, according to Greenglass, is the lack of female role models in old textbooks still found in many Canadian schools.

How are girls' attitudes affected? Studies .have shown that boys usually attribute their success to their superior ability, while girls attribute their own success to luck. When boys fail at a task, they tend to blame it on external factors; when girls fail, they blame their own lack of ability. Boys are more likely to try a second time to succeed.:

71. The first paragraph intends to tell us that____.

A) girls usually ask more questions than boys in class

B) girls often confuse teachers with many questions

C) teachers tend to give much more attention to boys

D) teachers believe that boys ask more serious questions

A) discrimination in schools has disappeared in Canada

B) Canadian school girls are more self-confident than boys

C) school girls in Canada are confused about their roles

D) in Canada girls and boys achieve equal success at school
