“Privacy”is translated as“yin si”in Chinese.Traditionally,in the Chinese mind,“yin si”is associated with that which is closed or unfair. If someone is said to have“yin si”,meddlers(好事者)will be attracted to pry(打探)into his or her affairs. So people always state that they don't have“yin si”.

On the contrary,Americans often declare intention to protect their privacy.Their understanding of privacy is that others have no right to pry into things which belong to themselves alone and have nothing to do with others. One who is too curious and who spreads rumors is said to violate the right to privacy.

In the evening,Sonia and I went to a bar for dinner. In China, when people mention bars, something bad usually comes to mind. But here, the bar was a quiet and tastefully laid-out place.People spoke quite softly, afraid of interrupting their neighbors, and sat face to face as they drank, sometimes three or five persons sitting together.

This sort of atmosphere was totally different from my preconception(传统观念),so I wanted to take a picture.Sonia stopped me,“Don't you see these people are pouring out their hearts?Maybe they are colleagues, friends, secret lovers. They came here looking for a peaceful place free from interruption by others. They wouldn't want to leave any trace of their having come here.So taking their pictures would be a serious violation of their right to privacy.”

Is there privacy between husband and wife? One of Sonia's friends married a talented Chinese man,but recently she became so angry that she wanted a divorce(离婚).The reason was that her husband had opened one of her letters and looked through her purse. The husband didn't realize that this is not tolerated in the U.S.. He thought that being a couple was like being one person;why couldn't he see the letter or the contents of the purse?Truly, everyone, even those living as a couple, needs room—not only in three-dimensional(三维)space,but in the heart.

39.What is the main idea of the text?

A.The understanding of“privacy”is different in China and America.

B.There is privacy between husband and wife in America.

C.Everyone has the right to privacy.

D.Everyone in every country needs room for himself.

40.Sonia stopped me when I wanted to take a picture in the bar because________.

A.taking pictures in a bar was not allowed in America

B.taking pictures in a bar would interrupt the neighbors

C.people who came here are colleagues, friends or secret lovers

D.taking pictures in a bar would violate other people's right to privacy

41.One of Sonia's friends wanted a divorce because____.

A.she thought her husband was not clever enough

B.her husband always opened her letters

C.her husband always looked through her purse

D.her husband didn't respect her right to privacy

42.Which of the following statements is NOT the American's understanding of privacy?

A.Privacy is connected with something that is unfair and bad.

B.Other people have no right to pry into his or her affairs.

C.There is privacy even between couples.

D.The right to privacy shouldn't be violated by others.

C

Have you played it? It's a game for a person or for a carload.

Someone begins,“I'm grateful to God for...”And he or she shares something. Then the next person gives gratitude for something. This goes on for 5 minutes or more until you reach your destination. There's no loser. Everyone feels happy after expressing gratitude. And sometimes you discover amazing things.

My 5-year-old granddaughter and I played the gratitude game when she visited us. I found out she was grateful to her friend Josh...and“the other Josh”. She was grateful to go swimming at the pool. She was grateful to have a daddy who played with her and to a nice mommy.

She would begin the gratitude games as soon as we settled into the car to drive somewhere. Playing it with her, I tried to be honest and not just say something fast. I really stopped to think. What was I grateful for at the moment? That our country was not at war. That we had plenty to eat. Playing the game made me more aware of the good things in my life.

A friend of mine was having a tough time seeing that there wasn't any good in his life. I suggested to my friend that he take a few minutes before going to bed and write down all the good things he could think of that happened during the day.

Later he told me what happened. He couldn't think of anything good. But he persisted until he was able to write a few things down. The next morning he decided to look for signs of good during the day. He sat down on his front steps. A robin(知更鸟)landed on the grass. In his words, it began“doing a little dance”,preening(整理羽毛)and cleaning itself. He watched the entire show. It was delightful. He realized that if he hadn't been really looking for good, he would never have noticed the robin and would have missed what to him was a remarkable display.

That evening he filled several pages with recordings of good that had happened during the day and things he was grateful for. Gratitude had made a huge difference!

A.He saw nothing worth his appreciation.

B.He had lost his purpose of life.

46.In which way has the game helped the writer's friend?

A.It taught him the necessity of giving gratitude.

B.It opened his eyes to nothing good in life.

C.It made him interested in birds.

D.It inspired him to play the gratitude game every day.

根据最后一段最后一句“Gratitude had made a huge difference!”

47.The story of the writer's friend tells us that________.

A.life is meaningless to a person who doesn't know how to give gratitude

B.one can always find relief in nature when he is in depression

C.gratitude plays an important role in changing a person's character

D.it's not difficult to find good things in life if one starts looking for them

Sixty thousand new doctors will be specifically trained in the next ten years to identify and treat people who are drinking too much, Public Health Minister Dawn Primarolo will announce today.

Medical schools have been offered £650,000 to do a scoping exercise next financial year to see how alcohol misuse training can be added to the subject.

The findings will make some medical schools able to make the necessary changes and test them. Within three years, every medical school in the country will have alcohol training on the subject.

Alcohol misuse costs the NHS(英国国民健康保险制度)around £1.7 billion every year. For every £1 spent on specialist alcohol services for dependent drinkers, the public purse saves £5, including £1.65 saved for the NHS.

Speaking at the BMA's(英国医学会)Public Health conference, Dawn Primarolo said,“Doctors and nurses are our eyes and ears when it comes to identifying problem drinkers. It's absolutely necessary that we give them the training they need to give drinkers the help they need before they become a burden to themselves and to the NHS. There are around 10 million people drinking at levels which are, or could be, causing serious harm. It's those people that we must get to. This is something the BMA has been calling for. Within ten years we should have 60,000 newly qualified doctors who have been trained to deal with alcohol misuse.”

Doctors who are already qualified won't be missed out. All doctors will be offered new training in using an e-learning package which will be available later this year. And a new web-based teaching facility will be available to the whole of the NHS this autumn.

48.According to the passage, we can learn that________.

A.some new doctors will aim at helping problem drinkers

B.more money is needed to fight against drinkers

C.there're enough skilled doctors and nurses in Britain

D.a great number of problem drinkers die of heart disease

根据文章第一段中的“Sixty thousand new doctors will be specifically trained in the next ten years to identify and treat people who are drinking too much,”可知将被培训的大量的医生会给酗酒者提供帮助。

49.What's the purpose of a scoping exercise?

A.To see how an alcohol misuse training course can be spread.

B.To find ways to identify and treat alcohol drinkers.

C.To make medical schools able to make necessary changes.

D.To educate medical students not to drink alcohol.

根据文章第二段中的“to do a scoping exercise next financial year to see how alcohol misuse training can be added to the subject.”

50.How much will be saved for the NHS if £3 is spent on alcohol services?

A.£15. B.£3.

C.£4.95 D.£10.05

根据文章第四段的“For every £1 spent on specialist alcohol services for dependent drinkers, the public purse saves £5, including £1.65 saved for the NHS.”

51.Which is another effective way of alcohol misuse training?

A.Reading papers. B.Using the Internet.

C.Watching TV. D.Attending lectures.

根据文章最后一段中的“All doctors will be offered new training in using an e-learning package which will be available later this year. And a new web-based teaching facility will be available to the whole of the NHS this autumn.”

Feeling depressed? Try laughing more. Some researchers think laughter just might be the best medicine, helping you feel better and putting that spring back in your step.

“I believe that if people can get more laughter in their lives, they are a lot better off,”says Steve Wilson, MA, CSP, a psychologist and laugh therapist(临床医学家). “They might be healthier too.”

We change physiologically when we laugh. We stretch muscles throughout our face and body, our pulse and blood pressure go up, and we breathe faster, sending more oxygen to our tissues.

People who believe in the benefits of laughter say it can be like a mild workout—and may offer some of the same advantages as a workout. “The effects of laughter and exercise are very similar,”says Wilson. “Combining laughter and movement, like waving your arms, is a great way to promote(提升)your heart rate.”

And laughter appears to burn calories, too. Maciej Buchowski, a researcher from Vanderbilt University, conducted a small study. It turned out that 10-15 minutes of laughter burned 50 calories.

While the results are interesting, don't be too hurried in carrying them out. One piece of chocolate has about 50 calories; at the rate of 50 calories per hour, losing one pound would require about 12 hours of concentrated laughter!

Yet researchers aren't sure if it's actually the act of laughing that makes people feel better. A good sense of humor, a positive attitude, and the support of friends and family might play a role, too.

“The definitive research into the potential(潜在的)health benefits of laughter just hasn't been done yet,”says Robert R. Provine, professor of psychology and neuroscience at the University of Maryland.

But while we don't know for sure that laughter helps people feel better, it certainly isn't hurting.

52.The main idea of the passage is supported by________.

A.authoritative researchers' discoveries

B.the theory that has been proved

C.experiments that were carried out in the past

D.the careful day-to-day observation

53.Who doubts the idea that laughter is helpful to one's health?

A.Steve Wilson.

B.Maciej Buchowski.

C.Robert R. Provine.

D.Steve Wilson and Robert R. Provine.

文章前面提到的几个科学家认为笑能使人健康,而最后Robert R. Provine却说“The definitive research into the potential(潜在的)health benefits of laughter just hasn't been done yet”。

54.The underlined word“workout”in the passage means________.

A.job B.exercise

C.rest D.treatment

55.According to the passage, losing one pound means burning________calories.

A.50 B.150

C.600 D.2500

由“at the rate of 50 calories per hour, losing one pound would require about 12 hours of concentrated laughter”可以推算出减少一磅要消耗600卡路里的热量。

Community Service

During the winter vacation, the students in our class joined in a meaningful activity in which all of us did our bit for the community.

First we went to visit an old lady who lived all alone. While we were in her home, one of us chatted with her and the rest helped do a thorough cleaning. We swept the floor and dusted the table. When the work was done, the house looked really neat and tidy. Then we went to the sports center, where different sports facilities needed polishing. We set out to work at once. In no time everything was dust-free. To make the environment clean, we also picked up the litter on the grass and along the paths. As the Spring Festival was around the corner, we put up New Year decorations on the billboard and a poster with the characters Happy Chinese New Year on it.

Having done all these, we saw a more pleasant community. Tired as we were, we felt happy as all of our work paid off.

Unit 1 Living well-Reading MARTY’S STORY Hi, my name is Marry Fielding and I guess you could say that I am "one in a million". In other words, there are not many people like me. You see, I have a muscle disease which makes me very weak, so I can't run or climb stairs as quickly as other people. In addition, sometimes I am very clumsy and drop things or bump into furniture. Unfortunately, the doctors don't know how to make me better, but I am very outgoing and have learned to adapt to my disability. My motto is: live One day at a time. Until I was ten years old I was the same as everyone else. I used to climb trees, swim and play football. In fact, I used to dream about playing professional football and possibly representing my country in the World Cup. Then I started to get weaker and weaker, until I could only enjoy football from a bench at the stadium. In the end I went into hospital for medical tests. I stayed there for nearly three months. I think I had at least a billion tests, including one in which they cut out a piece of muscle from my leg and looked at it under a microscope. Even after all that, no one could give my disease a name and it is difficult to know what the future holds. One problem is that I don't look any different from other people. So sometimes some children in my primary school would laugh, when I got out of breath after running a short way or had to stop and rest halfway up the stairs. Sometimes, too, I was too weak to go to school so my education suffered. Every time I returned after an absence, I felt stupid because I was behind the others. My life is a lot easier at high school because my fellow students have accepted me. The few who cannot see the real person inside my body do not make me annoyed, and I just ignore them. All in all I have a good life. I am happy to have found many things I can do, like writing and computer programming. My ambition is to work for a firm that develops computer software when I grow up. Last year invented a computer football game and a big company has decided to buy it from me. I have a very busy life with no time to sit around feeling sorry for myself. As well as going to the movies and football matches with my friends, I spend a lot of time with my pets. I have two rabbits, a parrot, a tank full of fish and a tortoise. To look after my pets properly takes a lot of time but I find it worthwhile. I also have to do a lot of work, especially if I have been away for a while. In many ways my disability has helped me grow stronger psychologically and become more independent. I have to work hard to live a normal life but it has been worth it. If I had a chance to say one thing to healthy children, it would be this: having a disability does not mean your life is not satisfying. So don't feel sorry for the disabled or make fun of them, and don't ignore them either. Just accept them for who they are, and give them encouragement to live as
