Immigration and Problems

Hundreds of thousands of people supporting immigration rights in the US filled streets all over America in early2006.Many held signs and American flags and asked to be treated as citizens-not criminals. Many of these supported legislation from Senator John McCain that would open a path to citizenship to immigrants who were already in the country illegally.Proposed legislation from other politicians called for stricter measures-including rounding up undocumented immigrants and sending them back to their home countries.

Canadian officials say that immigration applications continue to rise. Some want to keep the doors open. They need the labor.About400,000immigrants were allowed into the country in2005,according to the Canadian Government statistics. However, all this growth means that cities need to adapt.Newcomers don't always make a smooth transition into jobs for which they are skilled. So industries are using mentoring programs to help new immigrants find proper jobs.

With the large numbers of undocumented African immigrants arriving in the Canary Islands and showing no sign of abating, the Spanish Government has decided to get tough. There will be no more mass amnesties for illegals, and anyone coming to Spain

without permission will be sent back, the government has announced.About23,000 migrants landed on the islands in2006,and riots have erupted in some crowded reception centers. This has promoted local authorities to appeal to the United Nations for help.

France's new immigration and integration law gives the government new powers to encourage high-skilled migration. It takes effect in2007.The new law authorizes the government to identify particular professions where France has a talent shortage. Then the government will help these identified employers find immigrant workers with needed skills or qualifications. The selected foreign employees will be granted "skills and talents"visas, valid for three years. But some concern that it'll cause brain drain in developing countries.

The Cookie Thief

A woman was waiting at an airport one night, with several long hours before her flight. She hunted for a book in the airport shops, bought a bag of cookies and found a place to drop. She was engrossed in her book but happened to see that the man sitting beside her,as bold as could be,grabbed a cookie or two from the bag in between,

which she tried to ignore to avoid a scene. So she munched the cookies and watched the clock,as the gusty cookie thief diminished her stock.

She was getting more irritated as the minutes ticked by,thinking,"If I wasn't so nice,I would blacken his eye."With each cookie she took,he took one too. When only one was left, she wondered what he would do.With a smile on his face, and a nervous laugh,he took the last cookie and broke it in half.He offered her half, as he ate the other.

She snatched it from him and thought..,oooh,brother.This guy has some nerve and he's also rude. Why he didn't even show any gratitude! She had never known when she had been so galled and sighed with relief when her flight was called. She gathered her belongings and headed to the gate, refusing to look back at the ingrate thief.

She boarded the plane, and sank in her seat. Then she sought her book, which was almost complete. As she reached in her baggage, she gasped with surprise. There was her bag of cookies,in front of her eyes.If mine are here, she moaned in despair, the others were his,and he tried to share.Too late to apologize, she realized with grief, that she was the rude one,the ingrate, the thief.

Life Abroad

1At first thought, the task of preparing to begin life away from home can seem daunting,if not overwhelming.Being surrounded by an unfamiliar culture, environment and social norms, while being away from family and friends,is something which more and more Chinese students experience in the quest to gain a western education. The following five steps may prove useful in assisting the students in their preparations to study overseas.

2There is no substitute for good preparation.Arm yourself with background knowledge by researching information about the country you are going to.Thanks to the Internet, most of this can be found at the click of a button. If you are fortunate enough to make the acquaintance of a foreign native(from the country you wish to study in),be sure to ask them as many questions as possible on things such as good places to live, the cost of transport or important celebrations during the year. The information they provide would most likely not be published in any textbooks or tourist magazines.

3Don't underestimate the power of the mind in determining how events turn out. Decide how to approach any situation, before you are placed in it.Positive thoughts about your new circumstances and a positive attitude toward your new home and hosts

will bring positive results.Don't lose your chances at being happy and successful in your future study and new life before they have even started.

4It's not easy being practical when deciding what to pack and there is always that temptation to bring cherished personal belongings such as books, letters or fluffy(绒毛的)toys.Whatever you bring, make sure that it will be something that you think might help your chances of succeeding. This includes practical items such as study materials, old class notes, favorite textbooks or pens and even the contact details of previous teachers.

5Contact people you care about before and after. You are a person with feelings and relocating overseas is a big event.Talk to your close friends and family about your thoughts, dreams and fears for your new venture before you leave and make sure you keep in regular contact after you arrive and during your time away.Sharing the experience always halves any burdens and doubles the excitement of any achievements. Besides, with the ease and convenience of communicating via the Internet nowadays, there is no excuse not to keep in touch!

6Learn from all experiences.Value both your achievements and disappointments as learning experiences that can be applied to future situations in life.Value all positive outcomes and more importantly, don't take negative outcomes at face value(票面价值),Instead, try to see the lessons in mistakes and turn them into opportunities for future improvement.Opportunities are present all the time, but often they go by hundred.Recognizing opportunities is a skill which anyone can learn through practice and patience.

Seahorse Fathers

It’s true that male seahorses never play catch with their children or help them with their homework. But they do outdo human dads on one count.(1)The trait is unique in these strange and fascinating fish that inhabit tropical and temperate coastal waters worldwide.Seahorses, which range from less than an inch to a foot in length, have evolved a series of unusual adaptations.(2)

The male seahorse has a pouch(育儿袋)on its stomach in which to carry babies as many as2000at a time.A pregnancy lasts from10to25days depending on the species.(3)Eventually they engage in a true courtship dance, which can last as long as eight hours. It ends with the female depositing her eggs in the male's pouch.

The eggs hatch in the pouch.(4)When the tiny seahorses are ready to be born the male undergoes muscular contractions to expel the young known as“fly”from the pouch.

While seahorse dads go the extra mile to give birth the parents do not provide their tiny offspring with any care or protection after they are born.Infant seahorses are susceptible to death from predators(食肉动物)and being swept into ocean currents where they drift away from feeding grounds rich in microscopic organism.(5)

A.The father cares for the young as they grow regulating the water salinity(盐分)in the pouch to prepare them for life in the sea.

B.They are such an unusual looking fish that people sometimes don't realize they're real fish.

C.Male seahorses undergo pregnancy and give birth to their sons and daughters.

D.In spite of all our scientific research,we are only just beginning to understand how the seahorse fathers bear children.

E.The reproductive process begins when a male and a female seahorse do daily predawn dances their tails and swimming together.

2020年职称英语考试卫生类B级阅读判断练习及答案(3)

2020年职称英语考试卫生类B级阅读判断练习及答案 (3) “We hire talent. ” Those are the words of Rod Franz, a civil service computer technology director, responding to the question of opportunities for women who are interested in pursuing careers as computer technicians. On at least one of three shifts in his operation, the male-female ratio is 50-50. That is not surprising because government and educational institutes are required by the law to make every effort to open hiring opportunities to women and minority workers. What may be even more interesting to young women is that, according to Franz, private industry is hiring women and minorities away from us. And, since private industry pays more, it succeeds. Managers in the rapidly growing computer service field are quick to agree. They strongly encourage women to train for technician jobs, and they actively recruit female technicians across the country. They believe that this career field offers a wealth of possibility for women. A recent study by the Devry Institute of Technology that involved 100 employment managers in the Chicago area showed, too, that the number of women entering the field of computer science is on the rise, and that those already in the field are moving up. A significant increase in the number of women

This means that a Cancer Research UK team will keep a watching brief to ensure that patients are not subjected to rogue "cancer cures" or scientifically unsound information. Anyone can have access to the messages posted on Cancer Chat but if people wish to post a message they will need to register. And Rebekah Gibbs, cancer patient and star of TV's Casualty has pledged her support for the new project."I think Cancer Chat is a brilliant idea," she said."I have written a public diary about what I went through with breast cancer and I have had such a heart-warming response from other people going through the same thing. "The idea of a Cancer Chat forum means you can share information about treatment and side effects and you can really open up about your feelings online in a way that can be difficult when talking to close friends and family. And with Cancer Research UK monitoring the forum people can be reassured about the quality of information being exchanged."

2016年职称英语教材综合类新增文章 第二篇Common Questions about Dreams Does everyone dream? Yes. Research shows that we all dream. We have our most vivid dreams during a type of sleep called Rapid Eye Movement (REM) sleep. During REM sleep, the brain is very active. The eyes move quickly back and forth1 under the lids, and the large muscles of the body are relaxed. REM sleep occurs every 90-100 minutes, three to four times a night, and it lasts longer as the night goes on. ___1___ We dream at other times during the night, too, but those dreams are less vivid. Do people remember their dreams? A few people remember their dreams. However, most people forget nearly everything that happened during the night — dreams, thoughts, and the short periods of time when they were awake. ___2___ It seems that the memory of the dream is not totally lost, but for some reason it is very hard to bring it back2. If you want to remember your dream, the best thing to do is to write it down as soon as you wake up. Are dreams in color? Most dreams are in color. However, people may not be aware of it for two reasons :They don’t usually remember the details of their dreams, or they don’t notice the color because it is such a natural part of our lives. ___3___ Do dreams have meaning? Scientists continue to debate this issue.3 ___4___ Some people use dreams to help them learn more about their feelings, thoughts, behavior, motives, and values. Others find that dreams can help them solve problems. It’s also true that artists, writers, and scientists often ge t creative ideas from dreams. How can I learn to understand my dreams? The most important thing to remember is that your dreams are personal. The people, actions, and situations in your dreams reflect your experience, your thoughts, and your feelings. Some dream experts believe that there are certain types of dreams that many people have, even if they come from different cultures or time periods. Usually, however, the same dream will have different meanings for different people. For example, an elephant in a dream may mean one thing to a zookeeper and something very different to a child whose favorite toy is a stuffed elephant. ___5___ Then look for links between your dreams and what is happening in your daily life. If you think hard and you are patient, perhaps the meaning of your dreams will become clearer to you.
