第二部分阅读理解(共两节,满分40分)

第一节(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。

A

In Japan, hikikomori is a word used to describe the young people who hide away. ” They want to go out in the world, they want to make friends, but they can’t,” says Tamaki Saito, a doctor who has been studying the social problem since the early 1990s.

Although it’s hard to tell the exact number of today’s hikikomori, it actually remains very high.

A 2010 study for the Japanese Cabinet Office reported it was 700,000. Since sufferers are always hidden away, Saito himself places the number higher, at around one million. And the age of hikikomori seems to have risen over the last twenty years. Before it was twenty-one----now it is thirty-two.

What first caused a boy to hide away from society might be slight---poor grades or a broken heart, for example---but it can also become a source of suffering. And powerful social forces can strongly keep him staying in his bedroom.

One such force is sekentei, a person’s reputation in the neig hborhood and the difficulty he or

she has in impressing others. The longer hikikomori remain apart from society, the more they realize their social failure. They lose whatever confidence they had and the possibility of leaving home.

Andy Furlong, an expert at the University of Glasgow, connects the increase in the number of hikikomori with the rapid economic growth in the 1980s and the slowdown in the 1990s. It was at this point that the conveyor belt (传送带)of good school grades leading to good university places leading to jobs-for-life broke down. The Japanese youth at the time were faced with the reality of short-term and part-time work.

And it came with the loss of respect. Those who change their jobs frequently are called “freeters”---a mixture of t he word “freelance” and the German word for “worker”, arbeiter. In public discussion, freeters are often connected with “neets”--- a word made up from the first letters of “not in education, employment or training”. Neets, freeters and hikikomori are often used to describe the good-for-nothing young people.

Needless to say, what matters most is how to get those who hide away to return to society. Tamaki Saito’s approach is to begin with “reorganizing” the relationship between these patients and their parents.

21. What can we learn about hikikomori?

A. They are very popular in Japan.

B. Most young people are hikikomori.

C. There are 700,000 hikikomori in Japan.

D. They are cut off from the outside world.

22. What influence does sekentei have on hikikomori?

A. It opens up a wider world for them.

B. It stops them from leaving home.

C. It offers them social knowledge.

D. It helps them impress others.

23. According to Furlong, why did more Japanese youth hide away?

A. because they disliked social activities

B. because they didn’t perform well at school

C. because they had little interest in hard work

D. because they couldn’t find good, regular jobs

24. In Japan, freeters and neets .

A. don’t want to work at all

B. refer to full-time workers

C. are not accepted by society

D. dislike working with others

25. In the next part, what would the author most probably discuss?

A. how to help hikikomori out

B. why Saito studies hikikomori

C. why there are many hikikomori

D. how to get along with hikikomori

B

A man pulls into the parking lot, turns off the engine, and sits for a minute feeling anxious about the next two hours. An important client(客户) has invited him to an open house in celebration of their new downtown office. He hate s these things. He doesn’t know what to say. He doesn’t know anyone except the client, and he always feels like he’s trying not to look lost. He sinks deeper into the seat, making a tough decision about when to leave.

Casual conversation happens at least a dozen times a day. Yet for some of us, many occasions that involve small talk don’t ever get any easier, and may even increase anxiety and cause some people to feel on edge about social events, business lunches, and chance meetings with neighbors. Unfortunately, as we are suffering our own discomfort, our neighbors, friends, and workmates generally consider us distant, cold and proud.

If your conversations disappear almost as soon as they’ve begun, or if you’re an unwilling participant at social and business get-togethers, you’ll need some skills. Just get involved in a meaningful dialogue, try your best to introduce an interesting topic when there’s a silence, and develop business friendships whenever and wherever possible.

Small talk isn’t the lowly stepc hild of real conversation. Without it, you rarely get to the real conversation. Small talk is the icebreaker that clears the way for a deeper conversation. People who excel at small talk are experts at making others feel included, valued, and comfortable. And that goes a long way toward furthering a business relationship, or making a friend.

Don’t be fooled into thinking that all those other people you see who are smiling and happily chatting come by it naturally. Sure, some are natural-born talkers, but most have had to work at it. They’ve practiced, attended courses and read books. You don’t think so? Believe me, I know. I used to be a single-minded, unsociable engineer---no one has worse skills than I once did. I have become an expert by learning some ski lls and then practicing them. It’s that simple.

26. According to Paragraph 2, those who are poor at casual conversation .

A. are sometimes considered unfriendly

B. believe small talk is a waste of time

C. have few chances to meet strangers

D. feel comfortable when they are with neighbors

27. What does the author stress in Paragraph 4?

A. The important functions of small talk.

B. The difficulties of starting a deep conversation.

C. The advantages of small talk over real conversation.

D. The differences between small talk and real conversation.

28. In the last paragraph, the author mentions his own experience to .

A. show a good method of improving social skills

B. prove some people are born brilliant speakers

C. show his achievements in social activities

D. prove conversation skills can be acquired

The human population of Sri Lanka is now believed to be over 20 million. As a result, large areas of trees are being turned into farmland, highways are being built over centuries—old elephant migration(迁徙) routes, and elephants are being driven out of their habitats. This change causes turmoil, resulting in an increased number of uncontrollable events between elephants and humans.

The good news is that there is one place called the Elephant Transit Home(ETH) in Udawalawe National Park, the main purpose of which is to protect and care for baby elephants that are found injured or living without their mothers in the wild. A day at the ETH begins early in the morning when the baby elephants are given their first feeding of milk. During the course of the day, each baby will drink an average of 13 gallons of milk. Older elephant are fed mostly coconut leaves as well as other native plants. Then the elephants are set free to wander in the park, eating growing grass and forming a herd.

The ETH spends almost $125,000 each year on powdered milk for these baby animals. To help

pay for food and medical supplies, the ETH has a foster(领养)parent program. Anyone, even schoolchildren, can help a lot by giving money to care for a baby elephant. While some foster parents are too faraway to visit the baby elephant being cared for at the ETH, local schoolchildren play an important part in the program. Foster parents can name their elephants, take photographs

of them, and even help send them back into the wild.

Now visitors are not encouraged to get close to the elephants. The goal of the ETH is for the elephants to return to the wild in the end. It usually takes three years for a baby elephant to be sent back into its natural habitat. The elephants are often set free together with other animals with whom they have close relationships. This program helps them return to the wild as members of a herd that will communicate with each other and take care of each other.

32. What does the underlined word ”turmoil” most p robably refer to?

A. a lack of order

B. a sense of well-being

C. a condition of illness

D. a feeling of loneliness

33. As a foster parent in the ETH , you may .

A. give the elephant you care for a name

B. visit the baby elephants anytime you want

C. take photographs of elephants twice a month

D. visit Udawalawe National Park free of charge

34. The last paragraph mainly deals with .

A. the cost of raising a young elephant

B. the life of the baby elephants in the ETH

C. the future of the elephants in the ETH

D. the requirements of being a foster parent

35. What would be the best title for the text?

A. Migration Habits of Asian Elephants

B. V olunteer with Elephants in Sri Lanka

C. Traveling in Udawalawe National Park

D. The Elephant Transit Home in Sri Lanka

Everyone has seen plants growing, but have you ever thought 61. they get their food? In the seventeenth century, 62 European scientist called Van Helmot asked this question. Like most people, he thought plants get their food from soil. However, he decided to test the theory with 63 (experiment).

First, he dried some soil, put it into a pot and weighed it. Next, he weighed a small tree, planted in in the pot and added rain water. Then, he watered it 64 (regular) with rain water.

After five years, he removed the tree from the pot and weighed it again. He found that the tree had gained a huge amount of weight. When he weighed the soil, 65 , it was almost exactly the same as it had been five years ago . So he drew the conclusion that the tree grew by drinking water. Though it turned 66 to be wrong, he showed the importance of the use of 67 (science) evidence to support ideas.

We now know that plants and trees make their 68 food. Their leaves, when 69 (expose) to the air and sun, are like factories which can change the energy from the sun into chemical energy. where we found some paint in bright colors. We gathered all the brush we could find and moved all the materials to my yard. There on the road in the front of my house, we painted big stripes of colors. Stripe by stripe, our colors turned in a beautiful rainbow.

The sun was starting to sink. I saw a car in the distance and jumped down as I recognized it. It pulled slowly into the driveway and from the look on my mother face, I could tell how deep trouble I was in..

My mother walked towards me and ordered me clean my art up. Tears ran down my cheeks as I saw my beautiful rainbow turn into black cement. 参考范文

Dear Li Hua,

A lot of thanks for your inviting me to attend the Opening Ceremony of our school and make a speech there. Surely I’ll come and the following are what I will say.

In the first place, I appreciate the chance that I am offered the job by our school. I think I’ll do my be st to teach my students well and spare no efforts to help them. Secondly, to learn English well, one has to develop a good habit of study and try to use English as often as possible. As everybody knows, practice makes perfect. In addition, as English is more and more widely used in the world, the importance of it needs no explanation of mine. Therefore, everybody, including both the teachers and the students, needs to learn it. It is really worth our learning.

Now I feel I can’t wait to enjoy the chance to make the speech.

Looking forward to meeting you all soon. All the best wishes!

Daniel James
