IN HIS big annual speech to Congress, Barack Obama made several promises: he pledged to raise the minimum wage for those contracted to the federal government, to create a new tax-free savings bond to encourage Americans to save, to work for the closure of the Guantánamo Bay prison, to push immigration reforms and to veto any sanctions that Congress might pass designed to derail his deal with Iran over its nuclear programme.

Barack Obama made several promises

IN HIS big annual speech to Congress 状语

he pledged to raise the minimum wage for those contracted to the federal government, to create a new tax-free savings bond to encourage Americans to save, to work for the closure of the Guantánamo Bay prison, to push immigration reforms and to veto any sanctions that Congress might pass designed to derail his deal with Iran over its nuclear programme.

Sb pledged to do

其中四个不定式并列:to raise...,to creat...,to work for...,to push...,to veto...

难点解析:其中sanctions被that Congress might pass 和designed to derail his deal

with Iran over its nuclear programme所修饰;其中over its programme又在修饰deal; over这个介词可以翻译为:关于也可以翻译为解决;

to veto any sanctions that Congress might pass designed to derail his deal with Iran over its nuclear programme.

Biotechnology

Feb 15th 2014 |

From the print edition

AS INVESTORS and executives crammed into a New York ballroom for a conference held this week by the Biotechnology Industry Organisation, the mood was jittery. The previous week eight biotech firms had launched initial public offerings in America, together raising more than $500m.In a discussion panel on whether the ind ustry’s latest boom will last, a prominent investor, Oleg Nodelman, joked that he still had suitcases of cash for any firm that wanted it.

Prominent

第一个句子:主干:the mood was jittery.

状语:AS INVESTORS and executives crammed into a New York ballroom for a conference held this week by the Biotechnology Industry Organisation,

第二个句子:主干:eight biotech firms had launched initial public offerings in America

状语:The previous week

状语:together raising more than $500m.

第三个句子:主干:a prominent investor,(同位语Oleg Nodelman),joked that...

状语:In a discussion panel on whether the industry’s latest boom will last, a prominent investor,宾语:he still had suitcases of cash for any firm that wanted it.

There are reasons to hope that the latest biotech boom will not be followed by another bust.

Of all the words a proud, ambitious man might use to describe himself, perhaps only Abraham Lincoln would choose strange. Yet there it is. In one of his earliest wisps of autobiography,Lincoln wrote that he was “a strange, friendless, uneducated, penniless boy when he emerged from the backwoods in his early 20s to make his way in the world.

2.Ambitious

3.Penniless

4.Backwoods

5.Make one’s way (前进,出人头地,打拼,谋生)

例句:That young man will make his way in the world.(那个年轻人是会有出息的) 6.there it is 情况就是这样

7.emerged from 本意是出现,崛起,when he emerged from the backwoods结合这个语境可以翻译为:从偏僻的地区走出来的时候

句子解析:第一句:perhaps only Abraham Lincoln would choose strange.

Of all the words/ a proud, ambitious man might use to describe himself,(状语:of all the words , /a proud, ambitious man might use to describe himself 定语从句)

第二句:Yet there it is. 近乎于固定用法;(但是,情况确实是这样的)提示:这里的yet从语境来看应该表示递进;

Lincoln wrote that he was “a strange, friendless, uneducated, penniless boy”

主干when he emerged from the backwoods in his early 20s to make his way in the world.

状语In one of his earliest wisps of autobiography 状语

Amazon is a global superstore, like Walmart. It’s also a hardware manufacturer, like Apple, and a utility(公共服务公司), like Con Edison(美国著名的电力公司), and a video distributor, like Netflix(世界最大的在线影片租赁服务商,现在开始拍电视了,纸牌屋就是他们拍的。

星星出来,就是他了), and a literary magazine, like The Paris Revi(著名的文学评论杂志,类似中国的文学评论杂志), and a grocery deliverer, like Fresh Direct(全美最大的冷鲜营养餐企业Fresh Direct,类似中国的双汇), and someday it might be a package service, like U.P.S.(联合快递,类似中国的顺丰快递)Its founder and chief executive, Jeff Bezos, also owns a major newspaper, the Washington Post.

For Bezos to have seen a bookstore as a means to world domination at the beginning of the Internet age, when

there was already a crisis of confidence in the publishing world, in a country not known for its book-crazy public, was a stroke of business genius.

1. Stroke of genius

an outstandingly brilliant and original idea非凡的创见

a stroke of business genius.(在商业上的非凡创见)

2. domination

句子主语是:to have seen a bookstore as a means to world domination(这是一个带完成时态的动词不定式短语)

主干就是:()was a stroke of business genius.

状语:at the beginning of the Internet age

状语:when there was already a crisis of confidence in the publishing world,状语:in a country not known for its book-crazy public

In both America and Britain, the unemployment rate has fallen far faster over the past year than the tepid recoveries in both countries seem to justify.

2.Tepid

3.Recovery

5.More…than…

He earns more money than he can spend.(他赚的钱多到他用不完)than后面的句子是需要翻译为中文的否定的。

1.In both America and Britain, the unemployment rate has fallen far faster over the past year

2. the tepid recoveries in both countries seem (not) to justify +(前面的句子) .(than:可以理解为一个代词,指代前面的句子做justify的宾语)

The Nature study, conducted by Sriram Sankararaman of Harvard Medical School and his colleagues, looked at the genomes of 1,004 living people of European and Asian descent and compared them with Neanderthal DNA from a

50,000-year-old toe bone found in a Siberian cave, and also with the genomes of 176 west Africans. This latter group, Dr Sankararaman assumed, could have little Neanderthal DNA in them because Neanderthals, as far as can be determined from the fossil record, lived only in Europe and western Asia.

3. genomes 基因组

4. descent 血统European and Asian descent 欧亚血统

5. fossil record

The Nature study, conducted by Sriram Sankararaman of Harvard Medical School and his colleagues, looked at the genomes of 1,004 living people of European and Asian descent and compared them with Neanderthal DNA from a 50,000-year-old toe bone found in a Siberian cave, and also with the genomes of 176 west Africans.

主干:The Nature study looked at the genomes …and compared them with …and with…

The Nature study, conducted by Sriram Sankararaman of

Harvard Medical School and his colleagues,可以单独成句翻译为:医学院的Sankararaman博士和他的同事共同完成这项发表在《自然》杂志上的研究。

This latter group, Dr Sankararaman assumed, could have little Neanderthal DNA in them because Neanderthals, as far as can be determined from the fossil record, lived only in Europe and western Asia.

This latter group could have little Neanderthal DNA in them 插入语:Dr Sankararaman assumed, 原因状语从句:because Neanderthals lived only in Europe and western Asia.(主干), as far as can be determined from the fossil record, (状语)

In both America and Britain, the unemployment rate has fallen far faster over the past year than the tepid recoveries in both countries seem to justify.(第五句)我讲到了:more…than.. 亲,more=faster, 没事!

Com bating the public’s skepticism and mistrust is made all the more difficult by the existence of a powerful counter-current in so me people’s attitude to brands: a loyalty that can sometimes verge on idolatry.

2.all the more =much more 很,更加(相当于副词)

3.counter-currentn.

4. loyalty n.

5. idolatry n.

The Apple products, to its fans, verge on perfection.

A is made difficult by B:C

A= Combating the public’s skepticism and mistrust(动名词短语)

B= the existence of a powerful counter-current in some people’s attitude to brands

C= a loyalty that can sometimes verge on idolatry

Since Edward Snowden’s leaks about the NSA’s activities, much ink has been spilled about the threat to

cyber-security from rogue employees. Yet most breaches are still caused by outsiders.

2.NSA(National Security Agency)

3. rogue

5. cyber-security

句子结构:much ink has been spilled about…(固定表达) 1.

While much ink has been spilled about her triumph over the illness, less has been said about the qualities of her works.

Since Edward Snowden’s leaks about the NSA’s activities,

这个部分中的leak 是名词但记得翻译为动词,这样中文更通顺;

Much ink has been spilled about the threat to cyber-security from rogue employees.

Yet most breaches are still caused by outsiders.

IN 1968 an American ecologist, Garrett Hardin, published an article entitled “The Tragedy of the Commons”. He argued that when a resource is held jointly, it is in individuals’ self-interest to deplete it, so people will tend to undermine their collective long-term interest by over-exploiting rather than protecting that asset. Such a tragedy is now unfolding, causing serious damage to a resource that covers almost half the surface of the Earth. The high seas are a commons.

The Tragedy of the Commons(https://www.doczj.com/doc/5a5038403.html,/wiki/Garrett_Hardin)加内特哈丁;《公地悲剧》这是这位教授非常有名的一篇文章;他还提出过救生艇伦理学(Lifeboat Ethics);他的很多理论甚是经典,能解释我们现在所很多的全球化的问题。

2. be in someone’s interest

3. deplete

4. undermine 破坏

5. unfold 展现

6. high seas

11. Commons (单数名词)[treated as sing.]land or resources belonging to or affecting the whole of a community (全世界也可以是个社区)(社区)共有土地(或资源);影响全社区的土地(或资源)

1. IN 1968 an American ecologist, Garrett Hardin, published an article entitled “The Tragedy of the Commons”.

2. He argued that when a resource is held jointly, it is in individuals’ self-interest to deplete it, so people will tend to undermine their collective long-term interest by over-exploiting rather than protecting that asset.

3. Such a tragedy is now unfolding, causing serious damage to a resource that covers almost half the surface of the Earth. The high seas are a commons.

(在新闻媒体中,经常为了强调而把开头的一个单词甚至是两个单词的每个字母大写)THIS newspaper was established in 1843 to take part in a severe contest between intelligence, which presses forward, and an unworthy, timid ignorance obstructing our progress.(背)

THIS newspaper was established in 1843

其他成分:to take part in a severe contest between intelligence and ignorance 目的状语

which presses forward;intelligence 的定语

an unworthy, timid;ignorance的前置定语

obstructing our progress ;ignorance的后置定语

But everybody knows Obama needs a liberal to stop the court from moving further to the right than it already has under John Roberts, the present chief justice, a man more stealth-bomber than aircraft-carrier, whose professions of judicial modesty during his own confirmation hearings in 2005 gave little inkling of the controversial decisions over which he has since presided.

Obama needs a liberal to stop the court

from moving further to the right (状语)

than it already has under John Roberts (比较状语从句修饰moving further to the right)(省略了has moved)the present chief justice 同位语(John Roberts)

a man more stealth-bomber than aircraft-carrier 同位语(John Roberts)

whose professions of judicial modesty during his own confirmation hearings in 2005 gave little inkling of the controversial decisions over which he has since presided. (John Roberts)

微观分析:定语从句的主干:whose professions of judicial modesty gave little inkling of the controversial decisions 定语从句中再给出了两个定语:

(1)during his own confirmation hearings in 2005

(2)over which he has since presided.

还原为一个句子的话就是:he has since preside over the ( controversial decisions).

TO GREENS, men like John Shimkus—the chairman of a congressional body that oversees work to curb air, soil and water pollution—represent a special sort of bogeyman(可怕的人). Mr Shimkus, a Republican from rural Illinois, is not just staunchly pro-industry, anti-regulation and skeptical of claims that man’s activities menace the planet. He also brings his Bible to work. At a hearing on greenhouse gases, he opened it and quoted God’s words to Noah after the Flood.

“Never again will I destroy all living creatures,” God promised. This, said Mr Shimkus, was “infallible” proof that neither m an’s actions nor rising flood waters will destroy the Earth. So let’s not worry too much about global warming.

be skeptical of claims that:(可以直接理解为:不认同…

1. TO GREENS, men like John Shimkus—the chairman of a congressional body that oversees work to curb air, soil and water pollution—represent a special sort of bogeyman(可怕的怪物).

句子主干:men represent a special sort of bogeyman(可怕的怪物)

定语:like John Shimkus—the chairman of a congressional body that oversees work to curb air, soil and water pollution—(破折号里面是John Shimkus的同位语)TO GREENS,(对于环保人士而言) 状语翻译:根据汉语的习惯可以先翻译定语,让定语部分单词成句:

John Shimkus,

2. 3. Mr Shimkus, a Republican from rural Illinois, is not just staunchly pro- industry, anti-regulation and skeptical of claims that man’s a ctivities menace the planet. He also brings his Bible to work.

4.5. At a hearing on greenhouse gases, he opened it and quoted God’s words to Noah after the Flood. “Never again will I destr oy all living creatures,” God promised.

6.7. This, said Mr Shimkus, was “infallible” proof that neither man’s actions nor rising flood waters will destroy the Eart h. So let’s not worry too much about global warming.

A girl was 6 and she was at the back, drawing, and the teacher said this little girl hardly paid attention, and in this drawing lesson she did. The teacher was fascinated and she went over to her and she said, "What are you drawing?" and the girl said, "I'm drawing a picture of God." And the teacher said, "But nobody knows what God looks like." And the girl said, "They will in a minute."

They will (know what God looks like)in a minute.(他们很快就知道上帝长什么样子了)(因为小女孩画出来了)will 后面的动词和前文中的动词一样的时候,常常会省略。

https://www.doczj.com/doc/5a5038403.html,/movie/2006/2/V/E/M7SP3QUET_M7SP3T0VE.html

I have discovered, as perhaps Kelsey will after her much-publicized resignation from the editorship of She(这是一个杂志的名字叫女友)after a build-up of stress, that abandoning the doctrine of "juggling your life", and making the alternative move into downshifting brings with it far greater rewards than financial success and social status.

【主干识别】I have discovered that 加宾语从句

【其他成分】as perhaps Kelsey will after her much-publicized resignation from the editorship of She(这是个杂志的名字叫:女友)after a build- up of stress

Kelsey will (discover)as ,

1: after her much-publicized resignation from the editorship of She定语从句中的状语

2:after a build-up of stress;

of "juggling your life", 修饰doctrine alternative; into downshifting 修饰move(在翻译making the alternative move into downshifting 的时候可以直接翻译为:转而选择比较悠闲的生活方式,也就是make和move其实没有实际的意义,不用翻译为:做,动作)with it 这是个很讨厌的状语,其中it指前面的making the move, 可以翻译为随之,也可以不翻译,完全不影响整个句子语义的表达,这就是老外写作的时候比较“作”的一个手法而已,以后阅读中见到动词+with it + 名词,直接把with it 给我删掉就好了!

I have discovered that...

As Kelsey will ( discover ) after...(括号中就是省略的部分)

(只不过这里为了让句式比较多变,就把As Kelsey will ( discover) after..放到了I have discovered和that之间。

I have discovered the beauty of the English, as you will after your trying with efforts.(这个句子还原就是:I have discovered the beauty of the English, you will discover the beauty of the English after your trying with efforts too. 所以英语发明了:as 作为代词=the beauty of the English而且还有too的意思;前后两个句子都有discover所以第二个句子就不用再写discover了。

前两天的句子有一定难度多消化一下,今天的句子就温柔多了!(天气变化,注意增减衣服,我还在回去的路上,窗外有雨,电脑没电了,用手机输入的,有格式上的问题我回去调整!)Social- media firms are investigating whether they can tap the micro transactions market— say, by offering virtual currencies or goods that users can use as barter—though forced partnerships with local telecoms firms threaten the profitability of such schemes.

Say

Social-media firms are investigating whether+宾语从句

其他成分:插入语:by offering virtual currencies or goods that users can use as barter that users can use as barter 定语从句修饰goods.

状语从句: though forced partnerships with local telecoms firms threaten the profitability of such schemes

再解释一下:forced partnerships with local telecoms firms threaten the

profitability of such schemes结构:A threaten B

主语A:forced partnerships with local telecoms firms(forced 强迫性的)(强迫性的同当地电信公司的合作关系)核心主语:partnerships;B: the profitability of such schemes

Most careers in conservative politics, where purity is highly valued, would not survive a public declaration of love for the president, let alone a professed willingness to raise taxes to plug the deficit.

词汇突破:1.politics政见,政治活动What are your politics?

2.purity

3. survive : continue to live or exist in spite of (an accident or ordeal)(事故或折磨后)存活,坚持,存在

4. let alone

5. a public declaration of love for 公开声称爱…

6. a professed willingness to 公开声称愿意…Professed :公开声称的;

7. plug the deficit

Most careers would not survive A ,let alone B.

A = a public declaration of love for the president

B= a professed willingness to raise taxes to plug the deficit.

Why human became naked apes is still a mystery. Explanations range from ease of heat loss to the selection of mates by the quality

of their skin. Dr Greaves's study, though, removes any doubt about why a change of skin color was essential.

range from…to …包括…和…

though: 两个, ,隔开的though=however

remove :1.Why human became naked apes is still a mystery.

2. Explanations range from ease of heat loss to the selection of mates by the quality of their skin.

主干:Explanations range from A to B.

A= ease of heat loss

B= the selection of mates by the quality of their skin.

Dr Greaves's study, though, removes any doubt about why a change of skin color was essential.

It is not obvious how the capacity to visualize objects and to figure out

numerical patterns suits one to answer questions that have eluded some of the best poets and philosophers.

How …is not obvious.

How capacity suits one to answer questions is not obvious.

questions that have eluded some of the best poets and philosophers.

翻译点拨:在翻译的过程中可以调整语序,让中文更通顺。这里可以最后翻译定语从句:that have eluded some of the best poets and philosophers.连最好的诗人和哲学家都无法回答这些问题;

上句子吧!COMPANIES do not like to be abandoned any more than lovers do. Workers who quit are sometimes escorted out by security guards, their smartphones confiscated and their e-mail accounts deactivated. But in the professional services, former employees are increasingly treated as assets, not turncoats.

Asset

Turncoat

If I don't get a pay rise I'll quit.

COMPANIES do not like to be abandoned any more than lovers do.先学一个句型:not …any more than……

Workers who quit are sometimes escorted out by security guards, their smartphones confiscated and their e-mail accounts deactivated.

workers who quit Who quit 定语从句修饰workers

(1).their smartphones confiscated

(2). their e-mail accounts deactivated

But in the

professional services, former employees are increasingly treated as assets, not turncoats.

A long-held view of the history of the English colonies that became the United States has been that England’s policy toward these colonies before 1763 was dictated by commercial interests and that a change to more imperial policy, dominated by expansionist militarist objective, generated the tensions that ultimately led to the American Revolution.

Imperial policy

A long-held view has been that…and that...

其他成分:of the history of the English colonies that became the United States (view 的修饰成分)

England’s policy toward these colonies before 1763 was dictated by commercial

a change to more imperial policy, dominated by expansionist militarist objective, generated the tensions that ultimately led to the American Revolution.

微观分析:of the history of the English colonies that became the United States后来变成美国的英国殖民地的历史(够饶的)

a change to more imperial policy, dominated by expansionist militarist objective, generated the tensions that ultimately led to the American Revolution.

主干:a change to more imperial policy generated the tensions that ultimately led to the American Revolution.

There is, as Robert Rubin, the treasury secretary, says, a “disjunction”

between the mass of business anecdote that points to a leap in productivity and the picture reflected by the statistics.

Anecdote

Statistics

Picture

Mass of business anecdote :

There is a disjunction.

其他成分:as Robert Rubin, the treasury secretary, says 插入语(定语从句充当的其中还多了一个同位语做的插入语the treasury secretary)between the mass of business anecdote that points to a leap in productivity and the picture reflected by the statistics.

微观解析:between the mass of business anecdote and the picture; 为定语的主体部分that points to a leap in productivity修饰anecdote;

reflected by the statistics修饰picture

The previous researches suggest that our dreams may have some role in emotional stability. That does not necessarily mean, most dream researchers believe, that dreams are random expressions of emotion or devoid of some intellectual meaning. While some scientists maintain that dream patterns are strictly the result of how different neurons in the brain are firing, Deirdre Barrett, a psychologist and dream researcher at Harvard Medical School, believes they represent something more.

词汇突破:1.devoid of = lack of 缺乏,没有

2.Random 随机的

3.Emotional 情感的

4.Intellectual 智力和思维的,理性的,理智的;

5.Necessarily 一定;not necessarily 未必

6.Neurons 神经元

7. strictly 可以表示强调,这里=only=purely= no more than

8.previous

1. The previous researches suggest that our dreams may have some role in emotional stability.

Have some role in… = play some role in …

2. That does not necessarily mean, most dream researchers believe, that dreams are random expressions of emotion or devoid of some intellectual meaning.

3. While some scientists maintain that dream patterns are strictly the result of how different neurons in the brain are firing, Deirdre Barrett, a psychologist and dream researcher at Harvard Medical School, believes they represent

something more.

While: 很多时候都是表示:虽然;

翻译难点:the result of how different neurons in the brain are firing.

“I think it’s a fallacy that knowing brain action negates a subjective,

psychological meaning any more than it does for waking thought. I think dreams are thinking in a different biochemical state.”

Not…any more than

A= knowing brain action negates a subjective, psychological meaning(for dream)根据前文补全为dream;

B= it negates a subjective, psychological meaning) for waking thought (其中it= knowing brain action;Does=negate) C= it’s a fallacy ( it 形式主语= A and B)(两个从句做主语也用单数哦)

I think it’s a fallacy that knowing brai n action negates a subjective, psychological meaning (for dreams) any more than knowing brain action negates (a subjective, psychological meaning) for waking thought.

参考译文:“在我看来,了解大脑活动从而否定(梦境的)主观性和心理性的意义,就如其否定清醒状态下思考的主观性和心理性一样是个谬误;

negate本身有否定的意思,所以确实不用加not:但句子的理解有的时候还需要考虑一个语境的问题。第一个和第二个句子观点应该是相反的;那也可以从第二个句子反推。所以这里我还是加上了not;

There is no reason they should limit how much vitamin you take any more than they can limit how much water you drink. A= There is no reason

B= they should limit how much vitamin you take遇到not…any more than结构,在than后面的句子中记得加上:not,这就是这个结构的特点;所以:C= they can(not)limit how much water you drink

A man cannot fly any more than a bird can speak.

A= A man cannot fly

B= A bird can not speak

PS:A= There is no reason (没有理由)这里:there is no reason (that可以省略)/why...

继续not... any more than

But his primary task is not to think about the moral code which governs his activity, any more than a businessman is expected to dedicate his energies to an exploration of rules of conduct in business.

句子解析:还是not…any more than 结构,还是把句子拆分:

A= But his primary task is not to think about the moral code which governs his activity

B= a businessman is (not) expected to dedicate his energies to an exploration of rules of conduct in business.

Not…any more than,

It is entirely reasonable for auditors to believe that scientists who know exactly where they are going and how they will get there should not be distracted by the necessity of keeping one eye on the cash register while the other eye is on the microscope.

It is entirely reasonable/ for auditors /to believe that /scientists who know exactly where they are going and how they will get there/ should not be distracted by the necessity of keeping one eye on the cash register while the other eye is on the microscope.

简化:it is entirely reasonable for auditors to believe that A should not

be distracted by B.

A= scientists who know exactly where they are going and how they will

get there

B= the necessity of keeping one eye on the cash register while the other eye is on the microscope.

微观解析:scientists should not be distracted 宾语从句主干

who know exactly where they are going and how they will get there 定语从句修饰scientist where they are going and how they will get there定语从句中know的宾语从句by the necessity of keeping one eye on the cash register while the other eye is on the microscope.状语

of keeping one eye on the cash register修饰the necessity 做定语;while the other eye is on the microscope状语(一个ing结构本质上就是一个句子,是可以带上一个状语从句的。

(By短语在句子中是充当状语,翻译为原; where they are going and how they will get there处理为知道做什么,知道怎么做,这样的表达符合中文的习惯。

今年奥斯卡《地心引力》“Gravity”是大赢家之一,这周的经济学人有这样的报道:“Gravity”, a thriller set in orbit but filmed in west London, won seven Oscar on March 2nd. Yet Pinewood Studios, in whose buildings the movie was shot, is running out of space.

Shoot 拍摄run out of space 空间不够用了

1.“Gravity”, a thriller set in orbit but filmed in west London, won seven Oscar on March 2nd.主干:“Gravity”won seven Oscar on March 2nd逗号之间是同位语;a thriller set in orbit but filmed in west London set in orbit(以星球轨道为背景)filmed in west London (在伦敦西部拍摄)

2. Yet Pinewood Studios, in whose buildings the movie was shot, is running out of space. Yet Pinewood Studios is running out of space.逗号之间是定语,但是完全可以单独成句:in whose buildings the movie was shot这个句子改写为:the movie was shot in Pinewood Studios’ buildings

Western firms have piled into emerging markets in the past 20 years.(piled into 大量进入) Now comes the reckoning;这么短的一个句子其实也是一个倒装:The reckoning comes now; (reckon 反思)参考译文:20年前西方公司大量进入新兴市场。

VODAFONE’S latest figures appear at first glance to vindicate the most powerful management idea of the past two decades: that firms should expand in fast-growing emerging economies. Look closer, however, and those figures contradict accepted wisdom. Rather than being the panacea envisioned by many Western firms during the boom, emerging markets are governed by the oldest business rule of all—survival of the fittest.

相矛盾(be in contradict with) Rather than 而不是

Panacea n.

Envision v. 想象

Boom 繁荣时期(名词)也可以做动词;

1. VODAFONE’S latest figures appear at first glance to vindicate the most powerful management idea of the past two decades: that firms should expand in fast-growing emerging economies.

A appear to vindicate B

A= VODAFONE’S latest figures

B = the most powerful management idea of the past two decades: that firms should expand in fast-growing emerging economies.

状语:at first glance

2. Look closer, however, and those figures contradict accepted wisdom.

3. Rather than being the panacea /envisioned by many Western firms/ during the boom, emerging markets are governed by the oldest business rule of all— survival of the fittest.

Rather than being…= not being…(非谓语动词的否定形式,主语就是句子的主语emerging markets )

Of all 表示强调,没有实际含义;
