8. Practice: writing

Of all the theories concerned with the origin and evolution of the universe, the Big Bang model is the best known. This model originated from Hubble's Law, which was

formed by Edwin Hubble in 1929, holding that the universe is expanding in every direction. Therefore, it's reasonable to assume that, if the universe is currently growing, then the universe was smaller in the past. Along this line of reasoning, there must have been a time when the universe was an extremely small point. Out of this point the universe exploded into existence. The expansion of the universe lends strong support to the Big Bang theory. Another major line of evidence is the Cosmic Microwave Background radiation (CMB). The Big Bang model predicts that once the universe had reached 300,000 years old, photons could move about freely. The CMB, this "first light" in the universe, is a strong indication of the Big Bang. The third major evidence is that the amounts of elements observed all agree at least roughly with those predicted by the Big Bang theory. The last is that the Big Bang theory comprehensively lays down a framework for the eventual evolution of the universe.

During the American Civil War a young man in Virginia named Carter Druse joined a Union regiment, even though as a Southerner he would be considered a traitor to the South. However, his father, in spite of his different political viewpoint, told his son always to do what he thought was his duty. Several months later, Carter was sent as a guard hidden in the bushes a few miles from his father's house to make sure that no enemy soldier would spy on the valley, where the Union Army was hiding, waiting to attack by surprise an army of Southerners. At that moment, an enemy horseman appeared on the cliff that overlooked the valley. Carter was just going to shoot the horseman when he was shocked to discover that the horseman was his father! His entire body shaking, he couldn't bring himself to open fire. But seeing that his comrades were in danger of being exposed and wiped out, he remembered what his father had told him about his duty and shot his father's horse, sending it down into the valley with its rider

Thinking I could resort to other solutions, I called some twenty locksmith shops, but they all flatly refused me as I had been put on their blacklist. Then I called the janitor, my girlfriend, and my colleagues, who all turned me down for various reasons.

1. Why did the narrator want to buy an accident insurance ticket for the next day when he didn't plan to travel?

Because the narrator believed that it was relatively safer to go traveling by rail than to stay at home.

2. Why did the man in the ticket office look puzzled?

Normally, people would buy accident insurance tickets when they went traveling, and they would not need one when they stayed at home. But the narrator's behavior went contrary to common sense —he wanted an insurance ticket for lying in bed as opposed to traveling by rail, and that seemed something quite abnormal to the man in the ticket office.

3. What does "prize" in the sentence "There was never a prize in the lot" refer to?

The word "prize" in this sentence refers to profit or reward from the accident business, after spending a good deal of money in it.

4. Why did the narrator mention that the Erie road was set down as the most murderous in the list?

The Erie road was set down as the most murderous in the list, so it would serve as a representative example. Statistics showed that the Erie had killed forty-six or twenty-six in the preceding twelve months, that is, it killed 13 to 23 persons of New York's million in six months, while in the same time 13,000 of that million died in their beds.

5. What common causes of death are listed in this story?

Apart from dying in accidents while traveling and dying naturally in beds, some other causes of death were also mentioned in this story. People may die because they are

stabbed, shot, drowned, hanged, poisoned, or meet a similarly violent death in some other popular ways, such as perishing by kerosene-lamp and hoop-skirt conflagrations, getting buried in coal-mines, falling off house-tops, breaking through church or lecture-room floors, taking patent medicines, or committing suicide in other forms. 6. Would you take seriously the advice of buying a package of insurance tickets for staying at home, and sitting up nights? Why?

Normally, I would not take the advice seriously. The author was being humorous when he gave the advice. The home is regarded as the place for us to relax after a day's hard work. It is like a harbor protecting us from all the stress outside. It is not that risky to stay at home actually. Moreover, buying insurance to stay at home would surely cost a great deal of money, because most people spend a lot of time at home. As for the advice to sit up nights, it is even more ridiculous, because we human beings simply cannot live a normal life without enough sleep.

7.What does the author intend to reveal to us in the story?

The author intends to reveal to us that thoughtless people grumble more than is fair about railroad management in the United States, and that it is unwise to invest money in the insurance business.

4. Working with words and phrases

A. Find appropriate verbs or phrases (1—8) in the text which fit the items (a—h). abcdefgh(d)1. creep a. a man who is always blowing his own horn

abcdefgh(f)6. splinter f. a wood

abcdefgh(e)7. fall to g. at the low pay

B. Complete the following sentences with appropriate words in the box.

1. Some elder people enjoy Beijing opera (immensely).

2. This is a distasteful place, even the flowers seem to be (poisoned).

6. A newspaper (headline) caught his attention.

7. We should always keep (raw) meatseparate from cooked food.

8. The advertisement (aroused) the old lady's interest in buying the house.

10. They (invested) most of their time and much effort in the development of the new machine.

1. I could read of railway accidents every day —the newspaper atmosphere was foggy with them; but somehow they never came my way.

2. But the fact straightway suggested itself that the Erie was an immensely long road, and did more business than any other line in the country; so the double number of the killed ceased to be matter for surprise.

3. So we will let it stand as a fair presumption that this will hold good all over the country, and that consequently 25,000 out of every million of people we have must die every year.

4. And my advice to all people is: don't stay at home any more than you can help; but when you have got to stay at home a while, buy a package of those insurance tickets and sit up nights. You cannot be too cautious.

5. The moral of this composition is that thoughtless people grumble more than is fair about railroad management in the United States.

4. Not until the balance of the ecosystem is destroyed do human beings feel shocked. Therefore, [the importance of environmental protection can't be over-emphasized] (环保的重要性再怎么强调也不为过).

5. While traveling in the USA she took every chance to go shopping and soon found herself [buying more than necessary] (买了一些不需要的东西).

8. Practice: writing

In the story, the narrator wanted accident insurance not for traveling by rail, but for lying at home in bed, which went contrary to common sense —there always exists the likelihood of losing one's life in traveling by air, by train, or in any vehicle. This is because the narrator found that the peril lay not in traveling, but in staying at home. The narrator compares the danger of traveling in a vehicle, especially by train, with that of lying in bed. Availing himself of considerable hard statistics he shows the reader that chances are greatest for human beings to die in bed. Therefore, the narrator suggests it would be wise of us to stay away from home unless we have to, unless we have bought ourselves a package of insurance tickets and sit up nights without going

to bed.
