Passage One

Questions 36 to 40 are based on the following passage.

Women live longer than men because they are spoiled for choice. That is the startling conclusion of an international group of scientists who say they found the cause of female longevity.

They say females have two separate cell lines in their bodies, while men have only one. Women in old age can “choose” the more robust (强壮的) of these lines and survive for many more years.

Why there should be such a persistent cross-cultural gap between the life spans of the sexes has baffled scientists until now. In a paper in the journal Blood, and reported in the current issue of New Scientist, researchers at Odence University in Denmark and Ulleval University Hospital in Norway point to a key difference in the sex-determining chromosomes (染色体) found in the cells of men and women.

Every cell in a woman?s body has two X chromosomes, one inherited from her mother and the other from her father. In each cell, one of these two X chromosomes is switched off. This means that a woman is a mosatic (混合体) of two cell lines: one derived from h er father?s X chromosome, the other from her mother?s. By contrast,

every cell in a man?s body has an X and a Y chromosome, neither of which is turned off. He has only one line. This difference could be crucial in determining the

long-term health of men and women, scientists concluded, and so they decided to examine cells taken from young women.

They found an even division between their two different lines. However, when they looked at elderly females they found their bodies now favored one set of cells at the expense of the other line. “This suggests that one of the cell lines is …better? than the other,” say the researchers. In other words, women?s bodies may select the more vigorous of the two cell lines and allow it to predominate the twilight of their years, giving them a crucial advantage over men, who have no chance of choosing the healthier of two sets of cells.

36.Women enjoy a longer life than men because_____.

A. women are entitled to longevity

B. women are favored by God

C. women are born to be so

D. women are spoiled in the world

37. The difference in the sex-determining chromosomes is that_____.

A. a woman inherits X chromosomes from her mother while a man from his

father

B. a woman inherits Y chromosomes from her mother while a man from his

father

C. a woman has an X and a Y chromosome while a man has two of them

D. a woman has two X chromosomes while a man has an X and a Y

chromosome

38. A great difference between men and women is that_____.

A. women have two chromosomes but men have only one

B. women have two cell lines but men have only one

C. women can choose from two chromosomes but men cannot

D. women can choose from two cells but men cannot

39. The word “their” (Line 1, Para.5) refers to______.

A. the scientists?

B. men?s

C. women?s

D. young women?s

40. “The twilight of their years” (Line 5, Para.5) refer to______.

A. their old years

B. their young years

C. their good years

D. their bad years Passage Two

Questions 41 to 45 are based on the following passage.

People are making more and mor e demands on the world?s natural resources. If babies born in 1991 live for eighty years, the human population of the world may be anything from twice to three times the present total by 2070. In other words, they will have to share what is left of the ear th?s resources with 15

billion other people. But hopefully there will be an important decrease in the growth of population. What if this does not happen? The answer is that by the time before the babies born in 1991 reach the age of 40 they could be sharing resources with as many as 10 billion other people.

Limiting the pollution of water and the atmosphere, controlling the output of the chemicals that may be causing the global warming and climate change, and eating less meat may go some to help, but can anyone seriously imagine that these are going to solve the problems of the “baby class” of 1991?

There is no getting away from the fact that people are responsible for the present state of the world, and only people can solve the problems. Faced with the threat of water shortages, Beijing and Shanghai will take effective measures to save water and protect water resources.

Beijing will stick more strictly to water saving policies through the readjustment of industrial structures. Beijing is expected to be short of 1,185 billion cubic metres of water by 2020. Beijing will shut down factories with high water consumption and pollution including electric power, steel and paper manufacturing equipments. Advanced and water-saving technology will be introduced to new industrial projects.

It is said that water used in agriculture will drop to 35 percent of the city's water consumption in 2010 from 43 percent in 1998, and the figure will continue to drop to 28~30 percent in 2020. Beijing will increase the speed of renovation (革新,修复) of its urban water supply equipments. It is reported that more than 15 percent of water is lost during distribution. Water-saving equipment and efficient management can save Beijing more than 537 million cubic metres by 2010.

Consider Shanghai, it still faces key problems connected with its water resources and environments. Since 1998, the city has invested nearly US $169 million to treat its rivers, especially Suzhou Creek. The city's rivers have become noticeably clearer since putting it into action. The government will provide a further US $24 million for the treatment of rivers and US $12 million to treat sewag (下水道, 污水).

What does the author mean by …the problems of the …baby class? of 1991?

41. A. large number of babies will be born after 1991.

B. Babies born in 1991 will live a longer life.

C. The children of 1991 are not given good education.

D. The problems caused by babies born in 1991.

42. This short passage is probably taken from .

A. a news report

B. a guide to the world

C. an article by a medical worker

D. a government report

43. Beijing can save over 537 million cubic metres by 2010 by means of _____.

A. water-saving equipment

B. effective management

C. artificial rain fall

D. reducing water pollution

C. big cities like Beijing and Shanghai are trying their best to protect water

resources

D. water shortages have become one of the most important problems that China

Lessons from Jefferson

Thomas Jefferson, the third President of the United States, may be less famous than George Washington and Abraham Lincoln, but most people remember at least one fact about him: he wrote the Declaration of Independence.

Although Jefferson lived more than 200 years ago, there is much that we can learn from him today. Many of his ideas are especially interesting to modern youth. Here are some of the things he said and wrote:

Go and See.

Jefferson believed that a free man obtains knowledge from many sources besides books and that personal investigation is important. When still a young man, he was appointed to a committee to find out whether the South Branch of the James

River was deep enough to be used by large boats. While the other members of

the committee sat in the state capitol and studied papers on the subject, Jefferson got into a canoe and made on-the-spot observations.

You can Learn from Everyone.

By birth and by education Jefferson belonged to the highest social class. Yet, in a day when few noble persons ever spoke to those of humble origins except to give an order, Jefferson went out of his way to talk with gardeners, servants, and waiters. Jefferson once said to the French nobleman, Lafayette, "You must go into the people's homes as I have done, look into their cooking pots and eat their bread. If you will only do this, you may find out why people are dissatisfied and understand the revolution that is threatening France. "

Judge for Yourself.

Jefferson refused to accept other people's opinions without careful thought. "Neither believe nor reject anything," he wrote to his nephew, " because any

other person has rejected or believed it. Heaven has given you a mind for

judging truth and error. Use it. "

Jefferson felt that the people "may safely be trusted to hear everything true and false, and to form a correct judgment. Were it left to me to decide whether we should have a government without newspapers or newspapers without a government, I should not hesitate a moment to prefer the latter. "

Do What You Believe is Right.

In a free country there will always be conflicting ideas, and this is a source of strength. It is conflict and not unquestioning agreement that keeps freedom alive. Though Jefferson was for many years the object of strong criticism, he never answered his critics. He expressed his philosophy in letters to a friend, " There

are two sides to every question. If you take one side with decision and act on it with effect, those who take the other side will of course resent your actions."

Trust the Future; Trust the Young.

Jefferson felt that the present should never be chained to customs which have

lost their usefulness. “No society,” he said, “can make a perpetual constitution,

or even a perpetual law. The earth belongs to the living generation.” He did not fear new ideas, nor did he fear the future. “How much pain,” he remarked, “has been caused by evils which have never happened! I expect the best, not the worst.

I steer my ship with hope, leaving fear behind. "

Jefferson's courage and idealism were based on knowledge. He probably knew more than any other man of his age. He was an expert in agriculture, archeology; and medicine. He practiced crop rotation and soil conservation a century before these became standard practice, and he invented a plow superior to any other in

existence. He influenced architecture throughout America, and he was constantly producing devices for making the tasks of ordinary life easier to perform.

Of all Jefferson's many talents, one is central. He was above all a good and tireless writer. His complete works, now being published for the first time, will fill more than fifty volumes. His talent as an author was soon discovered, and when the time came to write the Declaration of Independence at Philadelphia in 1776, the task of writing it was his. Millions have thrilled to his words: “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal…”

When Jefferson died on July 4, 1826, the 50th anniversary of American independence, he left his countrymen a rich legacy of ideas and examples. American education owes a great debt to Thomas Jefferson, who believed that only a nation of educated people could remain free.

Youth of Today —No savings, no pension, huge debts — Leaving school or university means financial independence — but does it also mean debt? Some experts say the young should take some care. It is life, but not as we know it. As this year’s school leavers and graduate s in Britain move on to further education or work, tasting financial independence for the first time, they show signs of being entirely different to previous generations in their attitudes to money, according to information collected by Cash. Used to debt but more affluent than previous generations, the current crop of 16- to 24-year-olds is a complex sector of society. But if they can handle their debts, these 7.5 million young adults have the potential to become quite sophisticated on money matters. Cash looked for the financial hallmarks of this group. They are going to be big spenders and will be targeted heavily by retailers. “The market for products and services aimed at this group has continued to thrive,” concludes research organization Mintel in its recent report for retailers “Selling to and Profi ting from the Under 25s”. This is “partly because the period during which people are young, free and single, unencumbered (不受妨碍的)by parents and /or children has expanded to the late twenties and early thirties,”it says. While 13 percent of the population regularly pays their utility(公共设施), credit card and other bills late, this proportion rises to a remarkable 64 percent for 18- to 24-year-olds, according to research conducted among 1,000 adults by https://www.doczj.com/doc/5810560333.html,. In theory, this suggests that more than 4 million of them are heading for such poor credit ratings that they will find it difficult to borrow in the future. But lenders may become more flexible in their lending terms rather than lose out on this huge sector of the consumer market. Nearly one in three (28 percent) of people under 35 “do not consider their future financial position”, according to research from Accenture H R Services. Although half of 18- to 25-year-olds want to own their home some day, they see almost insurmountable hurdles, according to Mintel: “For those who had not yet bought their own property, the prospect of trying to do so seemed daunting — if not impossible —financially.” Or could it be that their future prosperity will depend on whether they inherit property from their parents? They regard as necessities many items which were seen as luxuries by their parents at the same age. More than nine out of 10 have their own mobile phone. “Some looked on their phone as a kind of security blanket, feeling lost without it,” says Mintel. A car is seen as “vital” by 64 percent
