The reunion

The car was pulling in. Minka’s heart was beating quickly, but her legs carried her forward.

Faces flashed through the car windows. She squinted (窥视) at the front passenger seat, but Betty was not there. Through the back window, she saw a blaze of white hair. Minka stepped forward, opened

the rear door and was met with a great spray of flowers.

From behind them, she saw her daughter’s face, the one she’d seen only in photographs, and heard

the voice she’d heard only over the phone.

Everything disappeared behind one longing --- to get her daughter into her arms. And then, she was.

Minka’s sight blurred (模糊). Her voice stuck in her throat. Her arms wrapped tightly around her girl, hands clenched against her b ack. She’d waited more than 28,000 days for this, her daughter safe in her

Finally Minka let go a little, pulling back to see that dear face again --- a face as lined as her own. But Minka believed she recognized those pale bule eyes. She looked into them, and then her daughter pressed in again and kissed her cheek. Minka managed to speak, her words pushing through a throat thickened by the weight of a million “I love you”s that had never been spoken.

For most people, graduation is an exciting day. My graduation day… was not.

I remember that weekend two years ago. Family and friends had flown in from across the country to watch our class walk across the stage. But like everyone else in my graduating class, I had watched the economy turn from bad to worse in my senior year. We graduates had degrees ( 学位), but very limited prospects (前景). Many applications (申请) had not panned out and I knew I had to find a job immediately because I had to pay my student loans (贷款).

I drove Southern California to find work. But what I thought would take a week dragged into two, and then four, and 100 job applications later, I found myself in the exact same spot as I was before.

I felt very sad. And the most frustrating part was no matter how hard I tried, I just couldn’t seem to make any progress.

So what did I do to maintain my sanity (心智健康)? I wrote. Something about putting words on a page made everything seem a little clearer --- a little brighter. Something about writing gave me hope. Sometimes a little hope is all you need!

I channeled my f rustration into a children’s book. Beyond the River is the story of an unlikely hero featuring (以……为主角) a little fish, who simply refuse to give up on his dream.

And then one day, I was offered a publishing contract for my first book! After that, things slowly began to fall into place. I was offered a second book deal.

The moral of this story is… don’t give up. If you work hard, give it time, and don’t give up. Things will always get better. Oftentimes our dreams lie in wait just a little further upstream… all we need is .

Eiffel Tower’s secret apartment

The Eiffel Tower is considered one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world. But most people wouldn’t even know that it contains a secret apartment at the top.

When the French engineer and architect Gustave Eiffel (古斯塔夫埃菲尔) designed the tower, he included a private apartment for himself. Located on the third level (almost 1,000 feet above the grond), the room was small but cozy with velvet chairs, wooden cabinets ( 橱柜), tasteful wallpaper and even a grand piano. It also held a small laboratory, which allowed the designer to conduct meteorological observations (气象观测) and enjoy the wonderful view of Paris.

It is said that many people a t that time were willing to pay a lot to rent Eiffel’s private space for a single night, but he refused them all. Instead, he used it to entertain respected guests like Thomas Edison (who gave him a phonograph machine (留声机) as a gift), or as a quiet space for thinking.

Today, after beging closed for many years, the apartment can now be visited by the public for the first time in history. The apartment remains almost the same and there are life-size wax figures of Eiffel and Edison inside the room.
