II. 阅读(共两节,满分50分)

第一节阅渎理解(共20小题;每小题2分,满分40分)

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C和D项中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。

A

When a dirty and untidy orange cat showed up in the prison yard,I was one of the first to go out there and pet it.I hadn’t tou ched a cat or a dog in over 20 years.I spent at least 20 minutes, knelt down behind the kitchen as the cat rolled around, relaxed. What he was expressing outwardly, I was feeling inwardly. It was an amazing bit of grace to feel him under my hand and note that I was reaching a life or another creature with something as simple as my care.

Over the next few days, there were other prisoners responding to the cat.Every yard period,a group of prisoners gathered there. They stood around talking and taking turns petting the cat. These were guys you wouldn’t usually find talking to each other.Several times I saw an officer in the group, not chasing people away, but just watching and seeming to enjoy along with the prisoners.Bowls of milk and water appeared along with bread, wisely placed under the edge of the dustbin to keep the birds from getting it.

The cat was obviously homeless and in pretty bad shape.People said that the cat came to the right place. He's getting treated like a king. This was true, but as I watched I was also thinking about what the cat was doing for us.There was a lot of talk about what's wrong with prisons in America. We need more programs. We need more psychologists or treatment of various kinds. Some may even talk about making prisons more kind. But I think what we really need is a chance to practise our own kindness. Not receive it,but give it.After more than two decades here,I know kindness is not a value that's encouraged. It's often seen as a weakness.Instead, the culture encourages keeping your head down, minding your own business, and never letting yourself be weak.

The cat did my heart good to see the effect he had on me and the men here.By simply saying,“I need some help here”,he did something important for us.He needed us.And we needed to be needed.I believe we all do.

One evening I went out and left my 17-year-old son in charge of his 8-year-old brother and 4-year-old sister. On this occasion, the work was made less troublesome by the presence of his girl friend. I left with complete confidence that the older children would do a wonderful job of babysitting the younger children. Later, I discovered that complete confidence was the last thing I should have left home with.

I had decided to return home earlier than planned so that my son and his girlfriend could go out. I called home with this happy news. But instead of hearing his cheerful, grateful voice on the other end of the line, all I heard was the sound of a telephone ringing.

It was, I should point out, after 10 p.m., when the two younger children should have been in bed. and when the two older children should have been answering the phone. “I’ll give him a lesson,”I said. I decided they must be outside. Why they might be outside at 10∶30 on a winter night I had no idea, but it was the only explanation I could come up with.

Finally, in desperation, I called his girlfriend’s house. After what seemed like countless rings, his girlfriend answered. “Yes,” she said brightly, “He’s right here.”

He came on the phone. I was not my usual calm, rational(理智的)self. After all, one of the rules of survival for modern parents is that you can’t trust modern teenagers. “Where are the children?” I said. He said they were with him. They had done nothing wrong. My son had taken the younger children over to his girlfriend’s house just f or ice cream and cake. This was too good to be believed. Well, it turns out that I shouldn’t have believed it. It was only part of the truth.

The following Saturday evening we were at my parents home, celebrating my birthday. My oldest son gave me the children’s gifts. Mounted and framed were a series of lovely color photographs of my children, dressed in their best clothes, and wearing their most wonderful expressions. They are pictures to treasure a lifetime, all taken by the father of my son’s girlfriend.

British physicist Stephen Hawking is possibly the world’s most famous scientist after Albert Einstein. Once he gave lectures in Zhejiang and Beijing in August 2002.He has left much for Chinese to think about.

An illness left him unable to move any part of his body except for three fingers. But his continuing efforts in the field of science have made many young people taking him as their idol.

His books such as A Brief History of Time, became best-sellers in Chinese bookstores at that time. “Hawking helps people expand their horizons and became interested in science,” said Pan Yunhe, President of Zhejiang University.

Indeed, experts don’t think it likely that Haw king’s lectures and profound ideas will be easily understood by the average person. But he has certainly sowed the seeds of science among many young people. And the “Hawking fever” caused by his visit has made people ask: How can China produce more top scientists like Hawking?

“Nurturing(培养) top scientists will take as much work to change society as to educate the scientists themselves.” Said Zhang fan, who has studied in the UK since 1999 and will be a sophomore(大二学生) at Trinity College in October. “In Britain, teachers inspire students to have a general understanding of the subjects they are interested in. And they encourage students to develop new ideas, which helps them to nature their creativity.”

In China, the Ministry of Education has encouraged schools to provide quality education to tap(开发) students’ potential.“I hope teachers will pay more attention to helping us use our imaginations and solve problems on our own,” said a middle school student in Beijing.

36. What does “profound” (in Paragraph4) mean?

A. Easy to understand.

B. Hard to understand

C. Happy to learn

D. Sad to learn.

37. What’s the main idea of the last two paragraphs?

A. What’s the education difference between the UK and China?

B. Hawking is the example of the UK and China

C. Zhang Fan wants to be a Hawking

D China is making efforts to produce top scientists like Hawking.

38. Many young people take Hawking as their idol because of .

A. his continuing efforts in the field of science

B. his disability in body

C. his book with the title of A Brief History of Time

D. his profound ideas

39. In Paragraph 3, what’s the meaning of “horizons” from the context?

A. Knowledge.

B. Sight.

C. The range of one’s knowledge.

D. Mind.

40. The main idea of the passage is about .

A. Haw king’s visit to China making people think about much

B. Haw king’s life and his research

C. A Brief History of Time

D. the comparison between English and Chinese education systems

My father’s r eaction to the bank building at 43rd Street and Fifth Avenue in New York City was immediate and definite: “You won’t catch me putting my money in there!” he declared, “Not in that glass box!”

Of course, my father is a gentleman of the old school, a member of the generation to whom a good deal of modern architecture is upsetting, but I am convinced that his negative response was not so much to the architecture as to a violation of his concept of the nature of money. In his generation money was thought of as a real commodity (实物) that could be carried, or stolen.

Consequently, to attract the custom of a sensible man, a bank had to have heavy walls, barred windows, and bronze doors, to affirm the fact, however untrue, that money would be safe inside. If a building’s design made it appear impenetrable ((难以渗透的), the institution was necessarily reliable, and the meaning of the heavy wall as an architecture symbol reflected people’s prevailing attitude toward money.

But the attitude toward money has, of course, changed. Excepting pocket money, cash of any kind is now rarely used; money as a tangible commodity has largely been replaced by credit.

A deficit(赤字) economy, accompanied by huge expansion, has led us to think of money as product of the creative imagination. The banker no longer offers us a safe: he offers us a service in which the most valuable element is the creativity for the invention of large numbers. It is in no way surprising, in view of this change in attitude, that we are witnessing the disappearance of the heavy-walled bank.

Just as the older bank emphasized its strength, this bank by its architecture boasts of imaginative powers. From this point of view it is hard to say where architecture ends and human assertion(人们的说法) begins.

41. The main idea of this passage is that .

A. money is not as valuable as it was in the past

B. changes have taken place in both the appearance and the concept of banks

C. the architectural style of the older bank is superior to that of the modern bank

D. prejudice makes the older generation think that the modern bank is unreliable

42. How do the older generation and the younger one think about money respectively?

A. The former thinks more of money than the latter.

B. The younger generation values money more than the older generation.

C. Both generations rely on the imaginative power of bankers to make money.

D. To the former money is a real commodity but to the latter be a means to produce more

money.

43. The words “tangible commodity” (Line 2, Pa ra. 4) refer to something .

A. that can be replaceable

B. that is usable

C. that can be touched

D. that can be reproduced

44. According to this passage, a modern banker should be .

A. ambitious and friendly

B. reliable and powerful

C. sensible and impenetrable

D. imaginative and creative

45. It can be inferred from the passage that the author's attitude towards the new trend in

banking is .

A. cautious

B. regretful

C. positive

D. hostile

Learning to study is not difficult. The first thing to remember is that you must be willing to learn. It doesn't mean that you must always like the subject. It does mean, however, that you must be willing to learn whatever is necessary. Try to understand why it is important and how it will help you now and later. Knowing mathematical facts will be useful in your whole life. Knowing how to spell words makes any kind of writing easier. Sometimes the subject that you think is going to be uninteresting will be attractive when you begin to work on it. Learning things can be fun if you can try your best.

Here's some advice for you. Have a certain time each day and a quiet place with good lighting for study, so that you can concentrate on your study without interruptions. Have everything ready before you sit down to study, a dictionary, paper, a pen and books. Be sure you understand what you should learn before you start. Read carefully and pay special attention to the most important things. When memorizing, find out the main parts and then recite the whole thing. Check your homework after you finish it.
