IV.Identify the methods of development used in the following paragraphs and write them on the answer sheet. (3×3)

1. The same qualities that make people good house guests make them good hospital patients. Good house guests can expect a reasonable amount of service and effort on their behalf, and hospital patients can also. Guests have to adjust to what is for them a change, and certainly hospital patients must do the same. No one appreciates a complaining, unpleasant, unappreciative house guest, and the hospital staff is no exception. Just as house guests must make adjustments to enjoy their visits, so patients must make adjustments to make their stays reasonably pleasant and satisfying under the circumstances.

2. One might wonder why, after the Norman Conquest, French did not become the national language, replacing English entirely. The reason is that the Conquest was not a national migration, as the earlier Anglo-Saxon invasion has been. Great numbers of Normans came to England, but they came as rulers and landlords. French became the

language of court, the nobility, the polite society. But it did not replace English as the language of the people. There must always have been hundreds of towns and villages in which French was never heard except when visitors of high station passed through.

3. There are three kinds of book owners. The first has all the standard sets and best-sellers—unread, untouched. The second has a great many books—a few of them read through. Most of them dipped into, but all of them as clean and shiny as the day they were bought. The third has a few books or many—every one of them dog-eared and dilapidated, shaken and loosened by continual use, marked and scribbled in from front to back.

V. Essay analysis: Read the following essay and answer the questions concerning it. Then put your answers on the answer shee t.(16 points)

Women’s Liberation

(Para 1) Since the middle of this century, women around the world have been seeking greater independence and recognition. No longer content with their traditional roles as housewives and mothers, women have joined together to create the so-called “women’s

liberation movement”. While the forces behind this international

movement vary from culture to culture and from individual to

individual, the basic causes in the United States can be traced to three

events: the development of effective birth-control methods, the invention of labor-saving devices for the home and the advent of World War II.

(Para 2)The first_ _①__of the liberation of women was the development of effective birth-control methods, freeing women from the endless cycle of childbearing and rearing. _ ②__of having a choice as to when and whether to bear children, women acquired the freedom and the time pursue interests outside of the home.__ ③__ the development of birth control, women could delay having children or avoid having them altogether; consequently, women had the opportunity to acquire an education or pursue a career.

(Para 3)___ _④__event was the development of mechanized labor-saving devices for the home, resulting in more leisure time and freedom for women.__⑤___, fifty years ago, a housewife spent an average of twelve to fourteen hours per day doing housework.___⑥__ the invention of machines such as vacuum cleaners, washing machines and dishwashers, a housewife can now take care of her daily housework in about five hours.

(Para 4)The__⑦___ event that, at least in the United States, gave impetus to the liberation of women was World War II. During the war, most men were serving in the military.___⑧____, women had to fill the vacancies in the labor force. Women by the thousands went to work in factories and then took over business for their absent husbands. This was a great change for the majority of American women; for they discovered that they could weld airplanes and manage business as well as change diapers and bake cookies.

(Para 5)These three events planted the seeds of great in society, and the effects of this change are being felt at all levels: in the family, in business and in government.

(Para 6)

The traditional husband-wife relationship is undergoing a radical transformation. Because so many women are working, men are learning to share the household tasks of cooking, cleaning and even caring for children. In some families, there has been a complete reversal of the traditional roles: the husband stays home, while the wife earns the family’s income.

(Para 7)The effects of women’s liberation are being felt not only in the home but also on the job. More and more women are working, and they are demanding equal salaries and equally responsible positions to those of men. It is not uncommon for a woman to be the president of a corporation these days. Many businesses encourage women to advance to high management positions, and every year, the nation’s schools produce an increasing number of women doctors, lawyers, and accountants.

(Para 8)Politics and government are still other areas that are feeling the effects of the women’s movement. Although the United States doesn’t appear ready to accept a woman president, as some countries of the world have, women are being elected to public office in increasing numbers. The United States currently has several women governors, which is the highest office in a state. A few years ago, this would have been unthinkable.

(Para 9) In conclusion, women in the United States are acquiring greater independence, which in causing sweeping changes in society—at home, at work, and in politics. While men may not be happy with these changes, they always remember that it was they, the men, who created the conditions leading to the liberation of women; men made war, male scientists developed birth control, and businessmen earned a lot of money selling vacuum cleaners and dishwashers

英语写作(一) 期末考试试题及参考答案

英语写作试题(一) I. Supply the missing paragraph (20 points) The following passage is incomplete with one body paragraph missing. Study the passage carefully and write the missing paragraph in about 100 words. Make sure that your tone and diction are in unity with the passage provided. Attaining Success in College Succeeding in college is not only important to getting and education, but also crucial in this day and age to success in the work place. To me, the three most important things for attaining a successful college experience are having smart classroom conduct, taking advantage of campus resources, and making college the first priority. _______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________ Making good use of campus resources is also of great importance to college success. The school library has many resources for the growth of the students’ mind. With computers and copy-machines for individual use, computer labs and writing labs are there not just for learning purposes but also for actual help with writing papers. The “office hours” will help the students build a close relationship with their professors and give them access to the professors’ mind. From the professors the students can acquire possible extra information that may put them ahead of their study. All these resources are free, since they are funded by student tuitions. So taking good advantage of the resources can only make the students’ education more attainable. Finally, any students who want to assure success must establish school as the top priority. Personally I have watched some students slowly loosen up; I have seen a pattern of partying and a lack of motivation. Many of the freshmen have no idea why they are in college, and their “eyes” often tell it all. This world is so rich in distractions that it is hard to keep a strong focus, especially if one is just starting his or her academic career. It is said that the first semester is often the most “unsuccessful” one. This certainly rings true for me. I made mistakes in this regard and eventually learned that, to achieve success, school must always be placed above other things. In my college experience, I have observed and learned how to achieve success. I wish someone had told me earlier the importance of having that smart classroom conduct, of fully utilizing the school resources, and of making college my top priority. Then, my college beginnings would not have been so rocky and tough. II. Write an outline (20 points) Read the following passage carefully and compose a “topic outline” for it. Smell Smell, as a means of nonverbal communication, is important. Odor communicates not only when we are face to face with another person, but also when the other personis not present. People from different cultures may have different attitudes toward body odors. Most people in the West respond negatively to what they consider bad odors such as body odor, breath odor, or

Study the passage carefully and write the missing paragraph in about 100 words.Make sure that your tone and diction are in unity with the passage provided. The Positive Effects of Owning a Dog on Children Dogs are the best friend of children. The dog and the child teach each other things and they look after each other. Owning a dog can have positive effects on a child’s development. Having a dog develops a child’s sense of responsibility, broadens his capacity for empathy, and teaches him the nature of friendship. The first advantage of owning a dog is that it’s helpful to develop a child’s sense of responsibility. Once you own a dog, you have to take care of it instead of only playing it: showering, feeding, walking, cleaning up, hair cutting and so on. Dogs are animals that have to spend time together with people or they get depressed. So you must take some time to stay with it. If they are sick, one can’t just leave it alone. All of these works are required to be carefully done which could make a child become more responsible. Another lesson that a child can learn from having a dog is how to be empathetic. A dog cannot express itself with speech, so its owner must learn to understand what the dog’s behavior means. Is the dog frightened, aggressive, or sick? The child needs to understand what is going on in the dog’s mind. The result of learning to read a dog’s behavior is that the child develops mpathy. By learning how to empathize with a dog, the child also learns how to empathize with other people. This leads to the child becoming a more considerate and caring person.
