A GRANDMOTHER, Michelle Riotton, 78, survived after falling down a mountain valley. She set off for a walk alone dressed only in a light jacket and trousers. "I slipped into a valley!" said Mrs. Riotton, who said the fall happened in a deep forest close to her home village.

It was warm and sunny when the accident happened, but temperatures dropped to v ery low when night fell, and it rained. "I wasn’t afraid," said Mrs Riotton. "But I was worried that my children and grandchildren would become too worried about me." Mrs Riotton said she covered herself in leaves when feeling cold, taking very small bites of two biscuits which she had in her pocket and drinking rainwater which fell down her face.

She spent six nights before she was found on Saturday. She was lying at the bottom of the valley, which was less than a mile from her home. The search had once been stopped, but Patrice Fossard, one of her neighbors, insisted that the search continue. "There was no way we could give up her, even if deep inside we felt we had little hope of finding her alive," said Mr Fossard. "It was a miracle that Michele was finally found."

Mrs Riotton said she would be taking life easier from now on. "Enough is enough!" she said. "No more forests--I don’t want to visit one again."

A mountain policeman said walking alone in the mountain was not recommended and that Mrs Riotton should have carried a mobile phone with her. Sleeping in a room with too much light has been linked to an increased risk of piling on the pounds, a study shows. A team at the Institute of Cancer Research in London found women had larger waistlines if their bedroom was "light enough to see across" at night. However, they caution there is not enough evidence to advise people to buy thicker curtains or turn off lights.

The women were asked to rate the amount of light in their bedrooms at night as:Light enough to read. Light enough to see across the room, but not read. Light enough to see your hand in front of you, but not across the room. Too dark to see your hand or you wear a mask.

Prof Anthony Swerdlow told the BBC:"In this very large group of people there is an association between reported light exposure at night and overweight and obesity. But there is not sufficient evidence to know if making your room darker would make any difference to your weight. There might be other explanations for the association, but the findings are intriguing enough to guarantee further scientific investigation."

The light is disrupting the body clock, which stems from our evolutionary past when we were active when it was light in the day and resting when it was dark at night. Light alters mood, physical strength and even the way we process food in a 24-hour cycle. Artificial light is known to disrupt the body clock by delaying the production of the sleep hormone melatonin.

Prof Derk-Jan Dijk said there would be no harm in trying to make bedrooms

darker. He told the BBC:"People in general are not aware of the light present in their bedroom. I think people should assess their bedroom and see how easy it would be to make it darker." Street lights, some alarm clocks and standby lights on electrical equipment such as televisions could light a room, he said. "Overall this study points to the importance of darkness," he concluded.

28. The passage mainly tells us_________.

A. bright bedrooms link to obesity

B. dark bedrooms link to obesity

C. people should turn off lights

D. people should buy thicker curtains

29.What does the underlined word “disrupt”(Para.4) mean?

A. stop

B. disturb

C. improve

D. recover

30. What might Paragraph 4 be used for?

A. One possible explanation on disrupting body clock.

B. One possible explanation on disrupting mood.

C. One possible explanation on disrupting physical strength.

D. One possible explanation on artificial light.

31.What’s Prof Derk-Jan Dijk’s attitude towards the dark room?

A. Unclear.

B. Doubtful.

C. Negative.

D. Favorable.

If you have an allergy to some food, even a very tiny bit of food can make you

sick. Lots of kids have food allergies---about 3 million in the United States alone.

The foods that cause the most food allergies include peanuts and other nuts:seafood, such as shrimp; milk; particularly cow’s milk; eggs; wheat.

What Is a Food Allergy?

Food allergies occur when your immune system makes a mistake. Usually, your immune system protects you from germs and disease. It does this by making antibodies that help you fight off bacteria, viruses, and other tiny organisms that can make you sick. But if you have a food allergy, your immune system mistakenly treats something in a certain food as if it’s really dangerous to you.

What’s a Reaction Like?

In the most serious cases, a food allergy can cause anaphylaxis(过敏症). This is a sudden, severe allergic reaction in which several problems occur all at once and can involve the skin, breathing, digestion, the heart and blood vessels. A person’s blood pressure can drop, breathing tubes can narrow and the tongue can swell. People at risk for this kind of a reaction have to be very careful and need a plan for handling emergencies, when they might need to get special medicine to stop these symptoms from getting worse.

What Will the Doctor Do?

If you think you may be allergic to a certain food, let your parents know. They will take you to the doctor to get it checked out. If your doctor thinks you might have a food allergy, he or she will probably send you to see a doctor who specializes in allergies. The allergy specialist will ask you about past reactions and

how long it takes between eating the food and getting the symptom, such as hives. The allergist also may ask about whether anyone else in your family has allergies or other allergy-related conditions. The allergist may also want to do a skin test. This is a way of seeing how your body reacts to a very small amount of the food that is giving your trouble.

32. According to the passage, you will have a food allergy when ___.

A. Your immune system recognizes tiny organisms in a certain food.

B. Your immune system mistakenly makes antibodies to help fight off something in a certain food.

C. Your immune system prevents something harmful in the food from entering your digestive system.

D. Your immune system releases chemicals to remove harmful things in acertain food.

33.In the sudden and severe allergic reaction, which of the following may happen?

A. Blood pressure rising

B. Lips swelling.

C. Breathing difficulty.

D. Heart beating becoming slow.

34. Which of the following suggestions is given to those at risk of severe allergic reaction?

A. T aking medicine as soon as an allergic reaction appears.

B. Avoiding eating any food when going outside

C. Always carrying with special medicine for possible symptoms.

D. Preparing a plan for dealing with emergencies ahead of time.

35. What will an allergist do to check your food allergy out?

A. Ask you about the allergy-associated information.

B. Give you some medicine right away.

C. Enquire about your present feeling towards the food.

D. Give you a shot of liquid extract of food.
