The traditional Chinese lunar calendar divides the year into 24 solar terms. Cold Dew(寒露), the 17th solar term of the year, begins this year on Oct 8 and ends on Oct 23.

Here are some things you should know about Cold Dew.

Foggy autumn

Temperatures drop significantly in October. When the cold air meet autumn rain, the abundant water vapor in the air soon reaches saturation(饱和), and then it turns into misty rain or fog. When the humidity is high, there will be foggy regions formed in many areas of China. Season for fishing

People always say that fishing in shallow water in autumn does make sense. That’s because during the Cold Dew period, temperatures decrease quickly and sunshine cannot reach the deep water thoroughly. Fish all swim to shallow water areas where the water temperature is relatively high.

Season for eating pomegranates(石榴)and hawthorns(山楂).

Pomegranates are ripe during Cold Dew. Pomegranates have been cherished for their extreme beauty, flavor, color, and health benefits for centuries.Extracts of the hawthorns have long been used in herbal medicine. The antioxidants in hawthorn are thought to improve heart health by strengthening blood vessels and stimulating blood flow.

Season for drinking chrysanthemum(菊花)wine

Chrysanthemum is the iconic flower of Cold Dew. To prevent autumn dryness, many regions in China have the custom of drinking chrysanthemum wine. This is a tradition of the Double Ninth Festival , which often falls around Cold Dew.

A great time for hiking

During Cold Dew, North China takes on a look of late autumn with white clouds, red leaves and early frost. On the day of the Double Ninth Festival, people often climb hills with cornels, a

kind of plant. This custom aims to dispel evils(驱邪), and originated in the Eastern Han Dynasty (AD25-220).

I moved to the Spanish capital, Madrid, nearly two months ago. I am here for a year teaching English in a secondary school as a language assistant. Before I arrived I thought I would be able to adapt to Spanish culture very easily, but my previous expectations have been very different from the reality of Spanish life.

Firstly, I didn′t realize how difficult it would be to adapt to the Spanish day and the timings of meals. Spanish 'midday' is at 14:00, meaning lunch is never before then. My expectation was that I would be eating lunch at 12:00-13:00, but most days it′s 15:30 before I eat lunch. The same applies to dinner or tea. In the UK,dinner is between 18:00 and 19:00, but now that dinner time is 21:30.

course means that Spaniards go to bed so much later. It is such a British thing to go to bed at 22:00! Also, because everything happens later in Spain, the evening socializing time, especially at the weekend, is very late!

Queuing politely and being cautious around strangers is also something that is very British. I realizedthis when I arrived in Spain. I took it for granted that queuing patiently is the norm, but this definitely isn′t the case in Spain. If there′s a free table in a restaurant, you quickly take it, even if there′s other people who have been waiting longer than you. However, the lack of ′British

politeness′isn′t all bad, as it reflects how Spaniards aren′t timid in public; being friendly and talking to someone you′v never met before is considered normal and is encouraged.

Finally, the reality of the Spanish diet is very different from my expectations. Food products that are so normal in the UK aren′t nearly as popular here.

25. After arriving in Spain, the author thought________.

A. teaching English was very easy.

B. getting used to Spanish culture was easy

C. Spanish life was different from his expectation before.

D. getting used to Spanish culture was difficult.

26. According to Paragraph 2, British people in Spain will have lunch________.

A. at 12:00—13:00

B. after 15:30

C. before 15:30

D. at 15:30

27. The underlined word “this” in Paragraph 3 refers to________.

A. eating dinner so late.

B. going to bed so early.

C. eating dinner so early.

D. going to bed so late.

28.Waiting in line patiently is considered the normal thing in the following countriesexcept____.

A. Spain

B. British

C. America

D. China

Swiss premium writing tool company Maison Caran d’Ache and luxury watchmaker MB&F recently teamed up to create a limited-edition fountain pen that’s shaped like a rocket ship and comes in a launch pad box. Considering the theme, the price of $19,900 is actually not that much of a surprise.

The Astrograph fountain pen is reportedly the most complex writing tool ever designed in the Caran d’Ache workshops. The companies involved in the project said that it was a massive technical challenge that required four years to develop the concept, plus an extra 12 months to come up with a functional final version. It contains no less than 99 innovativecomponents created specifically for its design, and every unit requires over 500 manualoperations.

The unique fountain pen was inspired by MB&F founder Maximilian Büsser’s childhood dream of exploring space. The body of the Astrograph is shaped to resemble a rocket, and has a hidden arm disguisedas the entrance of the spacecraft. The luxury launch pad box of the Astrograph also includes a magnetic(磁性的)astronaut little statue that attaches to the ladder of the “rocket” to increase the space-age feel of this masterpiece.

In honor of the 99 components used to make the Astrograph, only 99 pieces will be released, for the not-so-modest price of $19,900. Before you are shocked at the price, you should know that it’s

dirt cheap compared to the most expensive fountain pen in the world – the $1.3 million Aurora Diamante.

29. From the passage,we know that the Astrograph fountain pen________.

A. is the most complex in the world.

B. needed about five years to be created.

C. was created by a Luxury watchmaker.

D. needed more than 500 human operations.

30. The creator attached a magnetic statue to the “rocket” in order to_______.

A. honor a great astronaut in history.

B. make the writing tool look more attractive.

C. make the fountain pen more like a rocket ship.

D. add more space-age atmosphere to the fountain pen.

31. What can we learn from the passage?

A. The Astrograph fountain pen seems too expensive.

B.The Aurora Diamante will be released only 99 pieces.

C.Maximilian Büsse’s childhood dream was to explore space.

D. the Astrograph fountain pen is the most expensive in the world.C

What's the problem? It's possible that we all have compromised conversational intelligence. It's more likely that none of us start a conversation because it's awkward and challenging, or we think it's annoying and unnecessary. But the next time you find yourself among strangers, consider that small talk is worth the trouble. Experts say it's an invaluable social practice that results in big benefits. Dismissing small talk as unimportant is easy, but we can't forget that deep relationships wouldn't even exist if it weren't for casual conversation. Small talk is the grease (润滑剂) for social communication, says Bernardo Carducci, director of the Shyness Research Institute at Indiana University Southeast. "Almost every great love story and each big business deal begins with small talk," he explains. "The key to successful small talk is learning how to connect with others, not just communicate with them." In a 2014 study, Elizabeth Dunn, associate professor of psychology at UBC, invited people on their way into a coffee shop. One group was asked to seek out an interaction(互动) with its waiter; the other, to speak only when necessary. The results showed that those who chatted with their server reported significantly higher positive feelings and a better coffee shop experience. "It's not that talking to the waiter is better than talking to your husband," says Dunn. "But interactions with peripheral(边缘的) members of our social network matter for our well-being also." Dunn believes that people who reach out to strangers feel a significantly greater sense of belonging, a bond with others. Carducci believes developing such a sense

第三部分:阅读理解(共25小题。A节每小题2分, B节每小题1分;满分45分) 阅读下列短文, 从每题所给的四个选项中, 选出一个最佳答案。 A Every year thousands of tourists visit Pompeii, Italy. They see the sights that Pompeii is famous for--its stadium(运动场)and theaters, its shops and restaurants. The tourists do not, however, see Pompeii's people. They do not see them because Pompeii has no people. No one has lived in Pompeii for almost 2000 years. Once, Pompeii was a busy city of 22000 people. It lay at the foot of Mount Vesuvius, a grass-covered volcano(火山).Mount Vesuvius had not erupted (喷发)for centuries, so the people of Pompeii felt safe. But they were not. In August of AD 79, Mount Vesuvius erupted. The entire top of the mountain exploded, and a huge black cloud rose into the air. Soon stones and hot ash began to fall on Pompeii. When the eruption ended two days later, Pompeii was buried under 20 feet of stones and ashes. Almost all of its people were dead. For centuries, Pompeii lay buried under stone and ash. Then, in the year 1861, an Italian scientist named Ginseppe began to uncover Pompeii. Slowly, carefully, Ginseppe and his men dug. The city looked almost the same as it had looked in AD 79. There were streets and fountains, houses and shops. There was a stadium with 20000 seats. Perhaps the most important of all, there were everyday objects, which tell us a great deal about the people who lived in Pompeii. Many glasses and jars had some dark blue colour in the bottom, so we know that the people of Pompeii liked wine. They liked bread, too; metal bread pans were in every bakery. In one bakery there were 81 round, flat loaves of bread- a type of bread that is still sold in Italy today. Tiny boxes filled with a dark, shiny powder tell us that women like to wear eye-makeup. Ginseppe has died, but his work continues. One-fourth has not been uncovered yet. Scientists are still digging, still making discoveries that draw the tourists to Pompeii. 51.Why do large numbers of people come to Pompeii each year? A.To visit the volcano B.To shop and eat there. C.To watch sports and plays D.To see how Pompeiians lived. 52.Why had so many Pompeiians remained by volcanic Mount Vesuvius?
