第三部分:阅读理解(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)

A

Dear Daisy,

Phew! I?m so glad that da y is over. I was so worried all summer that my first day at my new school would be terrible.

I?m really tired, but my first day at school went well and I feel much better now.

First of all, we had to meet outside the school building. I was very nervous because my primary school only had 300 pupils but in the secondary school there are about 1,300. What a difference! The older pupils are really big. I felt so small waiting there in front of the school.

The other problem was that I didn?t know anyone. My fam ily moved over the summer holidays, because of Dad?s new job. So now I have to try to make some new friends. Standing in front of the school this morning, I wanted to be back at my old school with my old friends.

The head teacher came out and told us to go into the school hall. Then he called our names out to tell us which class we were in. My class teacher is called Mrs. Black. She took us to our classroom. It?s on the 5th floor and … guess what? ... We aren?t allowed to use the lift. I couldn?t

believe it.

When we were walking up all the stairs I started talking to another boy who didn?t know anyone. He said his family had moved from Hong Kong over the summer. He seemed really nice so we sat together when we got to our classroom, out of breath! He said his English was very poor but I thought it was really good.

We spent all morning with Mrs. Black looking at our timetables. Everyone in the school has a different timetable—can you believe it? Half of the school is learning Spanish as a second language and th e other half learns French. I?m in the Spanish group, which sounds like fun. I?m worried that I?ll forget my timetable and go to the wrong room! How will anyone help me if nobody else has the same timetable as me?

Lunchtime was OK. After lunch we started lessons. I had maths, which was complicated and difficult and then history, where we started to learn about ancient Greece. That looks interesting. I have to do some homework tonight to find out how the ancient Greek people lived.

So far so good. I?m quite looking forward to tomorrow, even though I?ve got science. I hate science!

Overweight seems to be a national trouble. Diets, books on dieting, dieting organizations, and advice from doctors and health professionals do not seem to be enough. Millions of people have turned to dangerous drugs or harmful diets to starve off their hunger.

The meat industry and the fast-food restaurants have more to do with America?s weight problem than anything else. Each day we are filled with powerful TV and radio ads promoting (推介) the idea that it?s perfectly OK to have bacon and eggs for breakfast, hamburgers and French fries for lunch, and fried chicken and French fries for supper.

Is there a healthy diet that people can use to lose weight and keep themselves slim and fit forever? There is indeed. But it requires removal of meat, fish, and milk products from the diet forever.

A healthy diet-and-exercise regimen (养生之道) is actually pretty simple. That is to cut meat, fish, and milk products out of the picture completely (and I do mean completely).

* Do not eat any meat, fish, eggs, or milk products. No cheese, no ice cream, no pizza, and no butter.

* Eat only low-fat, and low-sugar foods. Eat fruit (in reasonable amounts) for desserts.

* As much as possible, avoid drinks with caffeine, such as coffee, tea, or cola.

* Use soya drinks instead of milk. Soya drinks are high in protein and generally fairly low

in fat.

* Eat cereals, grains, bread, and pasta in reasonable amounts (with no cheese, but always with high-protein foods).

* Jog or fast-walk at least one mile per day. If you are unused to this level of exercise, start with smaller distances and build up to a mile.

It has been known for years that it is possible to get all the protein we need from high-protein vegetarian foods. Many restaurants now serve vegetable-protein meals, such as veggie-burgers or refried bean tacos and burritos; be sure to ask for them without cheese or sour cream!

59. The underlined words “starve off their hunger” in the first paragraph most probably mean ______.

A. satisfy their need of losing weight

B. wish for being slim

C. make themselves feel hungry

D. slow down the feeling of hunger

60. The meat industry and the fast-food restaurants have more to do with America?s weight

problem because ______.

A. they make powerful ads on TV and over radio

B. they convince people to eat more food rich in fat

C. they fill people with the idea to have bacon and eggs

D. they make people take dangerous drugs or harmful diets

61. To keep slim and fit, the author thinks it better ______.

A. to change the picture of meat, fish, eggs, or milk products

B. to eat cereals, grains, bread, and pasta as much as possible

C. not to eat any meat, fish, eggs, or milk products

D. not to take soya drinks high in protein

62. From the passage, we can infer that ______.

A. it?s healthy to jog or fa st-walk at least one mile every day

B. high-protein vegetarian foods don?t have all protein we need

C. it?s inappropriate to ask for veggie-burgers without cheese or sour cream

D. proper foods play a very important role in keeping healthy

What a Little Love Means to a Little One

For too many, the damage begins early in life. Four out of 10

infants(婴儿)born in the United States do not form a strong

bond(关系)with either parent, and they will pay for that the rest

of their lives.

New research from Princeton University confirms what other

researchers have already found: The number of babies born into

families that are too poorly equipped to give them a fair chance of having a successful life is extremely big.

That finding is supported by many other research projects, including a study from the University of Rochester showing that nearly one-third of U.S. parents don't know what to expect from their newborns, or how to help them grow and learn and get along with others. Babies, as others have pointed out, don't come with an owner's manual.

The basic problem, according to the Princeton study, is 40 percent of infants in the U.S. live in

fear or distrust of their parents, and that will turn into aggressiveness(侵犯), defiance(挑衅)and hyperactivity(多动)as they grow into adults.

Of that number, 25 percent don't bond with their parents because the parents aren't responding to their needs. And a tragic 15 percent find their parents so troubling that they will avoid them whenever possible.

That will not necessarily result in a lifetime of violence, but it will make living a successful life much more difficult.

“They can overcome it,” sociologist Sophie Moullin of Princeton, lead author of that study, said in a telephone interview. “It's not a make or break situation, but th ey might find it harder to control their behavior.”

Moullin, along with coauthors from Columbia University and the University of Bristol in England, analyzed more than 100 research projects, to reach their conclusions.

Many factors contribute to the problem, including poverty(贫穷), ignorance(无知), and stress among parents who are so busy with their own problems that a new child is sometimes more than they can handle.

Yet strong bonds, the researchers say, are amazingly simple to achieve.

The light from the campfire brightened the darkness, but it could not prevent the damp cold of Dennis?s Swamp (沼泽地) creeping into their bones. It was a strange place. Martin and Tom wished that they had not accepted Jack?s dare. They liked camping, but not near this swamp.

“So,” Martin asked as they sat watching the hot coals. “How did this place get its name?”

“Are you sure you want to hear it? It?s a scary story,” warned Jack.

“Of course!” cried out Tom. “If there were anything to be scared of, you wouldn?t have chosen this place!”

“Ok, but don?t say I didn?t warn you,” said Jack, and he began this tale.

“Way back in time, a man called Dennis tried to start a farm here. He built that cottage over there to live in. In those days, the area looked quite different ---- it was covered with tall trees and

the swamp was a crystal-clear river. After three hard years, Dennis had cleared several fields and planted crops. He was so proud of his success that he refused to listen to advice.

“You are clearing too much land,” warned one old man. “The land is a living thing. It will hit back at you if you abuse it.”

“Silly fool,” said Dennis to himself. “If I clear more land, I can grow more crops. I?ll become wealthier. He? s just jealous(妒忌的)!”

“Dennis continue d to chop down trees. Small animals that relied on them for food and shelter were destroyed. He was so eager to expand his farm that he did not notice the river flowing slowly towards his door. He did not notice salt seeping to the surface of the land. He did not notice swamp plants choking all the native plants.”

“What happened?” Martin asked. It was growing colder. He trembled, twisting his body closer to the fire.

“The land hit back ---- just as the old man warned,” Jack shrugged. “Dennis disappeared. Old folks around here believe that swamp plants moved up from the river and dragged him underwater. His body was never found.”

“What a stupid story,” laughed Tom. “Plants can?t…” Before he had finished speaking, he screamed and fainted (晕倒). The other two boys jumped up with fright, staring at Tom.

He’s tired, and so am I.(=I’ m also tired.) You can swim, and so can I.(=I can also swim.) She has had supper, and so can I.(=I’ve had lunch, too.) Tom speaks English, and so does his sister.(=His sister speaks English, too.) A: I went to the park yesterday. B: So did I.(=I also went to the park yesterday.) 2.“So +主语+be/have/助动词/情态动词”结构中的主谓是正常语序,so相当于indeed,certainly,表示说话人对前面或对方所说情况的肯定、赞同或证实,语气较强,意思是“确实如此”。 例如 A:It was cold yesterday.昨天很冷。B:So it was.的确如此。(=Yes,it was.) A:You seem to like sports.B:So I do.(=Yes,I do.) A:It will be fine tomorrow.B:So it will.(=Yes ,it will.) 3.“主语+do/does/did + so”结构指的是按上句的要求做了。此句型中do so代替上文中要求做的事,以免重复。 My Chinese teacher told me to hand in my composition on time and I did so.(=I han ded in my composition on time.) 语文老师叫我按时交作文, 我照办了。 4.So it is with…或 It is the same with…句型表示“……(的情况)也是如此。”当前面的句子中有几种不同形式的谓语时,要表示相同情况,必须使用本句型,不能使用so 引起的倒装句。 She doesn’t play the piano, but she likes singing. So it is with my sister. 5、There you are. 行了,好。 这是一句表示一种事情告一段落或有了最终结果的用语。如:

The fast day would be a busy one. I should call to me all my dear friends and look long into their faces, imprinting(刻上) upon my mind the outward evidences of the beauty that is within them, I should let my eyes rest, too, on the face of a baby, so that I could Catch a vision of the eager, innocent beauty which precedes the individual's consciousness of the conflicts which life develops. And I should like to look into the loyal, trusting eyes of my dogs--the serious, clever little Scottie, Darkie, and the strong, understanding Great Dane, Helga, whose warm, tender, and playful friendships are so comforting to me. On that busy first day I should also view the small simple things of my home. I want to see the warm colors in the carpets under my feet, the pictures on the walls, the lovely small furniture that transforms a house into home. My eyes would rest respectfully on the books in dot-raised type which I have read, but they would be more eagerly interested in the printed books which seeing people can read, for during the long night of my life the books I have read and those which have been read to me have built themselves into a great shining lighthouse, showing me the deepest channels of human life and the human spirit. In the afternoon of that first seeing day, I should take a long walk in the woods and intoxicate (使陶醉) my eyes on the beauties of the world of Nature trying desperately to absorb in a few hours the vast brilliance which is presenting itself to those who can see. On the way home from my woodland trip, my path would lie close to a farm so that I might see the patient horses ploughing in the field and the peaceful content of men living close to the soil. And I should pray for the glory of a colorful sunset. When dusk had fallen, I should experience the double delight of being able to see by artificial light which the genius of man has created to extend the power of his sight when Nature brings darkness. In the night of that first day of sight, I should not be able to sleep, so full would be my mind of the memories of the day!

高一第一学期牛津英语课文(学生版)

高一第一学期牛津英语课文 Unit one Reading Read this story in a school newspaper, Debby and Simon are college students. They have part-time jobs at a travel agency. They are sitting in the office. Student stories The City School Times Debby and Simon looked up as a well-dressed lady entered. The lady glanced at them both, then walked over to Debby. Debby greeted her cheerfully. The lady said, ‘I want to go by train to…’ Simon sighed and took some papers over to the fax machine. Mr. Young, a senior employee, was standing there. ‘What’s up, Simon? You don’t look very happy.’ ‘People always prefer Debby to me. I can’t understand it.’ ‘I can. It’s the way you communicate.’ ‘How can that be?’ Simon said. ‘I don’t even get a chance to speak to them.’ ‘Communicating is more than speaking and listening. Your body language is important, too.’ ‘Body language?’ ‘It’s the way you stand and sit. It’s your gestures and the expression on your face and in your eyes. Your whole appearance communicates things. The way you look at people doesn’t give them a good impression, Simon. You often rest your head on your hand. You look downwards. You never smile. You don’t turn your head or body towards people.’ ‘Look at Debby. She’s holding her head up, she looks at people’s eyes. She smiles. Your body language is telling people to go away. Debby’s body language is making them feel welcome. That’s why they go to her for assistance, and not to you.’ After that, Simon decided to improve his body language. He sat up and smiled at people. This seemed to work. Minutes later, a very beautiful girl entered. She looked at Debby and then Simon. Without hesitation she went to Simon and gave him a big smile. A few moments later, she left, still smiling. Mr. Young came over at once and remarked, ‘You made a good impression on her.’ ‘That was my sister’, said Simon, “She wanted to remind me that tomorrow is her birthday.’ More reading Eye contact Eye contact is a form of communication which can mean different things in different cultures. Read this article about eye contact on a website. Throughout the history of mankind, people have communicated with body language. In many situations, the way you say something is far more important than what you say. Eye contact is sometimes the key to communication. It can signal friendliness or hostility, interest or boredom, and understanding or confusion. In western cultures, maintaining eye contact in conversations is necessary. As a matter of fact, a
