From preschool to high school we have been told to “be yourself” or “be who you are”. But what do those sayings even mean? Does it mean to say exactly what you are thinking, not to learn from someone else? Could it mean to act only according to your nature and not let anything else influence you?

I?ll be honest that I d on?t believe in “b eing yourself”. I believe in becoming a better person.

Before you make a decision to come after me, let me make it clear. I am not saying that we should try to become the person like our favorite pop star or sports athlete. What I am saying is that we should all be trying to become a better person, and there is nothing wrong with using a role model(楷模)to achieve this.

I know that I am not perfect. I have my faults (过错), just like anyone else, but doesn?t it make us better to try t o fix them? Let me give some examples. If your grades are getting worse because you?re getting a little lazy, you should try to become a little more hard-working. Or, if you find yourself accidentally hurting someone?s feelings because of what you said, you might want to be a little more careful of what you say. No one is perfect, but it doesn?t mean we can?t strive for perfection.

I also don?t see the problem with modeling some of your life after someone else.

I still have my role models, whom I try t o learn from, and I wouldn?t be the same if I didn?t model a bit of my life after them. For example, I have always admired the ideas

of Mahatma Gandhi in India; I have even taken some of his lessons to heart such as “An eye for an eye makes the world go blind.”

In my mind, the present happens too fast for us to “be who we are”. By the time we have even found out who we are, that person is really only who we have been. I believe that people show themselves by who they are trying to become, not by who they are or who they have been.

Let?s say you took violin lessons all through primary school, but you

haven?t got the instrument out of its case in years. Were all those lessons

a waste of your parents? money because you didn?t become a great

violinist?

Not at all. Even though it has been a long time since you played the

violin, a new study shows that as little as one year of music training can

have a positive influence on your brain that will last the rest of your life.

In an experiment comparing children who had taken music lessons to those who hadn?t, Laurel Trainor, a researcher of the Institute for Music and the Mind at Ontario?s McMaster University, discovered that the musically-trained kids had larger brain responses (反应) to the sound recognition (分辨) exams. Trainor?s findings tell the possibility that musical training can actually change the brain?s hearing cortex(皮层), leading to better overall learning skills.

The study?s results point out that “musical training (but not necessarily passive (被动)listening to music) influences attention and memory, which makes a possibility that musical training might lead to better learning across a number of fields,” Trainor said in a report.

The effects (效果) of music training are even more easily seen in children with difficulties on language. “A music training that can strengthen the hearing skills of children who have difficulty in reading may also help improve some of their language abilities,” said Gottfried Schlaug, who has also studied music training and learning.

So, whether or not you can play a Tchaikovsky symphony part, it?s likely that your years of music lessons prepared your brain for all the speeches, emails, and conversations that are part of your life today. The oil resources which are left will not last very long. This means that all vehicles such as cars, trains, buses, planes and ships that need oil to work will not be able to run. So it will be necessary to develop a new method of transport which doesn?t use oil. Electric vehicles are one possibility. In England, most families have at least one car and this car is used every day. It could be that only one person in the family drives the car to work or for shopping. The family car is a very useful form of transport but it is also a great waste of energy, especially if it is compared with buses or trains which use less petrol per person than a car. Clearly, it would be better if there were fewer cars on the road and more speed limits so that the oil which is left will last as long as possible.

About 25% of England?s total consumption (消耗) of energy is domestic — it is used only in the home. Just over 20% is used for transport. Most of the energy is used in industry. It is difficult to suggest any possible energy conservation (保护) in industry because many of the suggestions would mean that some people would lose their jobs. It is important that industry produces the same amount of products using the same amount of workers.

Clearly, conservation is not going to be the answer to the energy problem. The

most it can do is to give more time for a better method to be found. The more time we have to develop new sources of energy, the better it is because there is still a lot of work to be done in order to find suitable, safe methods of producing energy.
