Passage 2

There is another division in the British Press—that between national papers, covering national, foreign and political matters; and regional or local papers serving a particular community. Regional papers can cater for a large

area—The Scotsman, for example, is a regional paper for Scotland, and the Yorkshire Post is a regional for the country of Yorkshire in the north of England.

The nationals are more popular than the regional papers; the total readership of all the regional and local dailies only amounts to about half the total readership of all the national dailies.

Local papers cover a much smaller area and deal with community issues. For example, there are many papers in London, each serving a small section of the city. The Hampstead and Highgate Express (Ham and High) is only concerned with events relating to a part of north London. These are papers delivered free to houses in a particular area. Passage 3

Overhead bridges are found in many parts of Singapore, especially in places where traffic is very heavy and crossing the road is dangerous.

The purpose of these bridges is to enable pedestrians (行人) to cross roads safely. Overhead bridges are used in very much the same way as zebra crossing (人行横道) . They are more efficient although less convenient because people have to climb up a long flight of steps. This is inconvenient especially to older peop le. When pedestrians use an overhead bridge, they do not hold up traffic. However, when they cross a busy road using a zebra crossing, traffic is held up. This is why the government has built many overhead bridges to help pedestrians and to keep traffic moving at the same time.

The government of Singapore has spent large sums of money building these bridges. For their own safety pedestrians should be encouraged to use them instead of risking their lives by dashing across the road. Old people, however, find it a little difficult climbing up and down the steps, but it is still much safer than walking across the road with all the danger of moving traffic.

Overhead bridges serve a very useful purpose. Pedestrians, both old and young, should make it a habit to us e them. This will prevent unnecessary accidents and loss of life.

Ask three people to look out the same window at a busy street corner and tell you what they see. Chances are you will receive three different answers. Each person sees the same scene, but each perceive (观察到) something different about it.

Another may say that he sees a rush-hour traffic jam at the crossing. The third may tell you that he sees a woman trying to cross the street with four children. For perception is the mind’s explanation of what the senses —in this case our eyes—tell us.

Many psychologists (心理学家) today are working to try to decide just how a person experiences or perceives the world around him. Using a scientific method, these psychologists set up experiments in which they can control all of the factors. By measuring and charting the results of many experiments, they are trying to fin out what makes different people perceive totally different thing about the same scene.

中考英语二轮复习阅读任务型阅读完形填空精享新编(9)

2019中考英语阅读、任务型阅读、完形填空精享新编(12) 一、阅读理解。 A (2019中考选练) Everyone talks about the advantage of taking time out for “simple pleasures”. The idea is that we will be happier if we often do inexpensive, easy-to-do activities. However, the problem for many of us is t hat we don’t know what makes us happy. When I was in college, my mother gave me some wise advice. She said, “Before you get married and live with another person, you need to spend some time living by yourself. You need to get to know yourself.” So I did exactly that. For almost two years, I lived by myself. I found that I loved to spend hours looking around in bookstores. I also loved to spend an afternoon just walking around the city. And every so often, I needed the moments of pure silence. But, of course, we all don’t enjoy the same things. A simple pleasure for me would be to spend an hour reading a book in my backyard. However, that same activity would give my husband no pleasure. We are all so different. Sometimes, we already know what makes us happy. However, as life gets busier and we get older, we put aside our simple pleasures. For example, I had to give up playing the flute(长笛)when I started working and had family responsibilities. Playing my flute seemed selfish(自私的) when no one else in my family could join, but three years ago I returned to playing the flute. I regret having ever stopped. Simple pleasures are neither simple nor universal(普遍的).
