该项涂黑。

A

It's the lunchtime break at Shanghai Xianxia Middle School.

No mobile phones can be heard ringing anywhere. The common sight of crowds of children

chatting on their phones or sending short messages has disappeared. A grade-2 student said: "I

couldn't concentrate during classes if the cell phone was with me. I couldn't help checking if

there were messages or missed phone calls. I even played games on the phone sometimes."

The school authorities say they feel the ban is necessary to keep order in class. They even gave out an open letter to remind parents not to let their children bring mobile phones to school. More than 96 percent of parents say they welcome the school decision. The school is also being flexible (灵活的) in implementing the ban. Those students who live far from school are allowed

to bring mobile phones to contact their parents. But they still have to switch them off in classrooms.

Medical experts have also welcomed the school decision. They say too much dependence on mobile phones can cause many psychological problems in teenage students.

56. The passage mainly tells us _________.

A. a story happening at Shanghai Xianxia Middle School

B. that the use of the mobile phone can cause mental problems

C. about a ban on the mobile phone in a middle school in Shanghai

D. that the mobile phone is a big trouble to teenage students

57. According to the grade-2 student, __________.

A. the mobile phone is helpful to her studies

B. it is good to play cell phone games sometimes

C. the mobile phone should be turned on during classes

D. it is no good to use the cell phone at school

58. Which of the following can replace the underlined word "implementing" in the 4th

paragraph?

Many people who work in London prefer to live outside it, and to go to work or school every day by train, car or bus, even though this means they have to get up early in the morning and

reach home late in the evening.

One advantage of living outside London is that houses are cheaper. Even a small flat in London without a garden costs quite a lot to rent. With the same money, one can get a little house in the country with a garden of one's own.

Then, in the country one can rest from the noise and hurry of the town. Even though one

has to get up earlier and spend more time in trains or buses, one can sleep better at night and during weekends. On summer evenings, one can enjoy the fresh, clean air of the country. If one likes gardens, one can spend one's free time digging, planting, watering and doing a lot of things that are needed in a garden. Then, when the flowers and vegetables come up, one enjoys the reward of his hard work.

Some people, however, take no interest in country things; for them, happiness lies in the town, with its cinema and theatres, beautiful shops and busy streets, dance halls and restaurants. Such people would feel that their life was not worth living if they had to live outside London. An occasional walk in one of the parks and two weeks' visit to the seaside every summer is all the country life they want. The rest they will leave to those who are glad to get away from London

every night.

59.Some people prefer to live in the country because_________.

A. they cannot afford to rent a flat in London

B. they can make more money in the country

C. they enjoy driving their own cars to work

D. they can get close to nature and live a cheaper life

60. Which of the following is NOT mentioned in the text?

A. Living in the country can avoid the noise and hurry of the city.

B. Digging and planting in a country garden is really enjoyable.

C. It is cheaper to buy a house with a garden in the country.

D. It is easier to know people and make friends in the country.

61. People who think happiness lies in the town would prefer to_________.

A. live in the country

B. plant in their garden

C. live a life of pleasure

D. go to bed early in the evening

My teenage son Karl became withdrawn(孤僻) after his father died. As a single parent, I tried to do my best to talk to him. But the more I tried, the more he pulled away. When his report

card arrived during his junior year, it said that he had been absent 95 times from classes and had

six falling grades for the year. In this way he would never graduate. I sent him to the school adviser, and I even begged him. Nothing worked.

One night I felt so powerless that I got down on my knees and asked God for help. "Please God, I can't do anything more for my son. I'm at the end of my rope. I'm giving the whole thing up

to you."

I was at work when I got a phone call. A man introduced himself as the headmaster. "I want

to talk to you about Karl's absences." Before he could say another word, I choked up (哽咽) and all my disappointment and sadness over Karl came pouring out into the ears of this stranger. "I

love my son, but I just don't know what to do. I've tried everything to get Karl to go back to school and nothing has worked. It's out of my hands." For a moment there was silence on the other end of the line. The headmaster seriously said, "Thank you for your time", and hung up.

Karl’s next report card showed a marked improvement in his grades. Finally, he was even on the list of the best students at school. In his fourth year, I attended a parent-teacher meeting with Karl. I noticed that his teachers were astonished at the way he had turned himself around. On our way home, he said, "Mum, remember that call from the headmaster last year?" I nodded. "That

was me. I thought I'd play a joke but when I heard what you said, it really hit me how much I was hurting you. That's when I knew I had to make you proud."

D. she would have to hang up

64. Who was it that telephoned Karl's mother that day?

Have you ever noticed what happens to an idea once you express it? Just talking about it or

writing it down causes you to make it clear in your own mind. How can you use this to increase

your brain power? Start writing.

By putting thoughts into words, you are telling yourself the logic (逻辑) behind what you

think, feel, or only partly understand. Often, explaining a thought is the process of understanding.

In other words, you increase your brain power by exercising your “explain power.”

brain power, even if you have no idea Try this experiment. Explain how you’ll increase your

or “I’ll

surprised how often t his becomes a workable plan, and if you actually do this, you’ll have a bette understanding of your brain from now.

Another benefit of writing is that it helps you remember. Many, if not most, highly

productive people are always taking notes. You can try keeping it all in your head, but if you keep

a journal of your ideas the next time you’re working on a big project, you’ll probably have m success.

Want to understand a topic? Write a book about it. That’s an extreme example, but if you

are learning something new, write a letter to a friend about it, and you will understand it better.

Want to invent something? Write an explanation of the problem, why you want to solve it, and

why it is worth solving, and you’re half-way there.

Writers don’t always write because they clearly understand something beforehand. Often,

they write about something because they want to understand it. You can do the same. Writing

will help bring you to an understanding. Give it a try.

66. What would be the best title for the text?

A. A Way on How to Write.

B. Increase Your Brain Power through Writing.

C. Brain Power Helps Improve Your Writing.

D. How to Start Your Writing.

67. According to the text, writing can help you a lot in the following ways EXCEPT ______.

A. the increase of your brain power

B. the ability to remember

C. the development of your interest in study

D. the better understanding of a topic

68. If a writer writes something, it means that he or she ______.

A. has understood it very well

B. needs to understand it better

This even was started by Jennifer Barlow of Midlothian, Virginia in 2003, and it is becoming more popular each year. It has been supported by the International Dark-Sky Association, the American Astronomical Society, and the Astronomical League. This even always occurs in April, during the week of the new moon so that the sky can be as dark as possible for the best viewing conditions. “It is my wish that people could see the night sky without other light in the sky as our ancestors (祖先) saw it hundreds of years ago,” explains Barlow. Since it only lasts a week and not everyone in the country will take part in it, how will the National Dark-Sky Week reduce light pollution? The main goal of NDSW is to increase awareness (意识) of the harmful effects of light pollution. It is not possible for all of the light pollution in this part of the world to disappear. However, it is possible to make a small difference in the quality of the night sky. Another goal of this even is to promote (促进) the use of better lighting systems that direct light toward the ground instead of up into the sky. Jennifer Barlow states, “The night sky is a gift of such beauty that it should not be polluted by wasted light. In this way, our children will not lose touch with the wonder of our universe.” 11.
