Paradise Lost?

A. Go on clearing them away for limited wood and land.

B. Protecting them for limited pleasure and benefits.

Background Information

Directions: The teacher introduces the background information of the text

1. Explain what are the rainforests?

A rainforest is a piece of tropical(热带的) woodland, characterized(表现...的特色) by lush(繁荣的) vegetation(植被) and great biological diversity(差异). There are more species(种类)of plants and animals in tropical rain forests than in all the rest of the world’s ecosystems(生态系统)combined(组合). About 70 percent of all plant species in these forests are trees.

2. Study the New words and expressions(用举例、派生、比较、解释、词性变化等方法讲解)

Christopher Columbus said that he had never seen anything so beautiful, trees “beautiful and green, different from ours, with flowers a nd fruits and little birds which sing very sweetly.”

Christopher Columbus was a great Italian – Spanish navigator, and he had sailed west across the Atlantic Ocean to search for a road to Asia, but found America instead.

Paragraph 2

The great navigator’s impression is the first known written description of a rainforest(最早的文字描述). It remains hard to beat. Rainforests are extraordinarily beautiful (异常美丽), but the beauty is fragile.
