When Nancy Flexer opened the door to her classroom near the end of her final school year, all 41 years of her career as a beloved first-grade teacher came to life right in front of her.

Cole Elementary School in Tennessee surprised Flexer with a memorable and emotional retirement party featuring former students of all ages, dating back to the first class she taught in the 1973-1974 school year. A video of the event shows an overwhelmed Flexer being moved to tears as she hears former students who are now adults tell her how much she affected their lives.

“I’m one of the luckiest people in this world,” Flexer said. “I remember I opened the door to the classroom thinking no one was in there, and it was wall-to-wall people and banners and everything. It was the coolest thing that could have ever happened in my life. How many times do we really realize the lives we’ve touched, the manner in which we’ve touched them, and that these are memories that stay with them for life?

Despite being young when they were taught by Flexer, students easily recalled the heartwarming notes she wrote them on report cards, the ways she helped them overcome shyness and awkwardness, and how she inspired them to future academic success to earn scholarships and advanced degrees.

Even though Flexer hadn’t seen some of the former students for decades, she instantly remembered the names of every single one there.

A scrapbook(剪贴簿) of her career was presented to her as one student after another recalled the effect Flexer had on his or her life.

“I’ve had many opportunities to move to a school closer to my home, but I said ‘Cole gave me so much in my life that when I retire, I will retire from Cole school and give back what’s

been given to me,’” Flexer said. “My career could have taken me nowhere that would have made me happier. I think of it as a blessing.”

19. We learn from the text that the retirement party ______________.

A. was beyond Flex er’s expectations

B. attracted many of Flexer’s friends

C. was full of appreciative parents

D. was organized by Flexer’s students

20. Flexer’s former students _________.

A. helped her overcome her shyness

B. presented her with cards full of heartwarming notes

C. made a video to express their appreciation

D. bore her help and inspiration in mind

21. What can we infer from the last paragraph?

A. Flexer missed many chances of further studies.

B. Flexer once studied in Cole Elementary School.

C. Flexer loved her teaching career in Cole.

D. Flexer refused many other schools’ invitations.

22. What would be the best title for the text?

A. A memorable moving retirement party

B. A teacher’s 41-year teaching career

C. Students’ memories of their beloved teacher

D. Students’ gifts to their beloved teacher

C

“Keep your eyes on the ball.” That is good advice when you are on the playing field, and good advice for everyday life. “Keep your mind on what’s important,” is the way I’d put it. But people are funny. They think too much about the details.

I had a secretary once. She was very hardworking. I ran a school and people used to call up to enroll (注册) for courses. Berry used to get angry at the phone. “If they keep on ringing, I’ll never get my typing done!” she’d shout.

People just don’t see the big picture. One evening, after leaving work, I was sitting next to a man on the train. I was feeling tired. My eyes fell on the paper he had spread out in front of him. You know how you feel to read over someone’s shoulder?

I read the page and leaned back. I guessed I was waiting for him to turn it. After a while, I realized—he wasn’t turning the page. He just kept on reading.

Now if you knew the page he was reading, you’d know that there weren’t many words on the page to read anyway. The layout (设计) was mostly pictures. So I turned to the man and said,” You know, you really read very slowly.”

“What do you mean?” he asked. “Well,” I told him, “I read the page in about a minute, and you have taken about ten. And you are still reading. You know,” I went on “If you learned to read faster, you could get more reading done.” He remained silent for a minute or two. “If I read too fast, my paper wouldn’t last me to my station.”

23. Why wasn’t the writer satisfied with his secretary?

A. She didn’t put first thing first.

B. She was too busy.

C. She was easy to get angry.

D. She couldn’t finish her work on time.

24. Why did the train rider read newspapers?

A. To take in information.

B. To enjoy pictures.

C. To save time.

D. To kill time.

25. The writer thinks that people seem to need a sense of _____________.

A. what to read first

B. how to read fast

C. what is important

D. what is funny

26. The passage is mainly about the writer’s opinion on people’s _____________.

A. judgment

B. work

C. life

D. habits

D

Have you ever considered all the English expressions that include words about clothes? Let’s have a look.

People wear pants to cover the lower part of their bodies. We sometimes say that people who are nervous have ants in their pants. Sometimes, people may get caught with their pants down. They are found doing something they should not be doing. And, in every family, one person takes control. Sometimes a wife tells her husband what to do. Then we say she wears the pants in the family.

Pants usually have pockets to hold things. Money that is likely to be spent quickly can burn a hole in your pocket. Sometimes you need a belt to hold up your pants. If you have less money than usual, you may have to tighten your belt.

I always praise People who can save their money and not spend too much. I really take my hat off to them. Yet, when it comes to my own money, I spend it at the drop of a hat, which means I instantly spend it.

Boots are a heavy or strong kind of shoes. People who are too big for their boots think they are more important than they really are. I dislike such people.

My father is an important person. He runs a big company. He wears a suit and tie, and a shirt with sleeves that cover his arms. Some people who do not know him well think he is too serious and never shows his feelings openly. But I know that my father wears his heart on his sleeve.

27. Which of the following expressions can show someone is nervous?

A. Get caught with one’s pants down.

B. Bum a h ole in one’s pocket.

C. Wear the pants in the family.

D. Have ants in one’s pants.

28. If we say someone has to tighten his belt, we probably mean he .

A. has done something wrong

B. is short of money

C. has put on the wrong pants

D. used to live a rich life

29. Someone who spends his money at the drop of a hat most probably .

A. never wastes his money

B. earns much money

C. doesn’t save money

D. spends more than he earns

30. We can use “wear one’s heart on one’s sleeve” to describe someone who .

A. shows his feelings openly

B. looks very serious

C. gets angry easily

D. often wears a suit and tie

Nowadays older people have more control over their lives and they play a full part in society. Moreover, better health care has left more people in their sixties and seventies feeling fit and active alter retirement. Mental activity, as well as physical exercise, can contribute to better health. Playing computer games is a very effective way of exercising the brain.

When personal computers were first introduced, most older people didn’t believe they would ever operate it. Now computers have been around for a few generations and retired people have gradually become more relaxed about using them for fun. Gamers over 65 prefer playing puzzle games and card games. Kate Stevens, aged 72, says: “I find it very relaxing. It’s not very challenging, but you still need to concentrate.”

Another development that has favored “grey games” is a change in the type of video games available on the market. There’s a greater variety of games to choose from, including more intellectual and complex strategy(策略)and simulation(模拟)games. Internet Chess and Train Simulator are among the most popular. Train Simulator is based on real-world rail activities. Players can choose from a variety of challenges, such as keeping to a strict-timetable and using

helper engines during a winter storm.

Some people argue that “grey gamers” simply don’t have the skills required for computer games, and that teenagers are better. This couldn’t be further from the truth. Most .computer games require the kind of analytical thinking that improves with practice, which means that the “grey gamers” may well be f ar better than gamers half a century younger than them. In games where speed is the main consideration, older people would be at a disadvantage because they may have slower reaction times. On the other hand, “grey gamers” have a preference for slower paced, mind challenging games.

I was an introvert(内向的人)by nature. For as long as I remember, putting on a sincere smile when meeting someone had never been easy. The key to a sincere smile however, is simple. It’s for someone to feel excited. But that’s the source of the problem. When meeting people, instead of being excited, I often felt upset.

But we all know friends are important. The more friends you have, the more opportunities you will get, whether it’s job opportunities, a romantic relationship, or business partners. So a smile is important to make others feel comfortable. Mother Teresa sa id, “Every time you smile at someone, it is an action of love, a gift to that person, a beautiful thing.”

The smile I’m now talking about is not to make a face to cashiers(收银员)or waiters. I’m talking about those wide smiles you make when meeting old friends. So I’ve discovered a trick. And I call this technique(技巧)“Oh, it’s Jamie!”When I meet someone, I imagine an old friend of mine called Jamie who was my first friend when we were still kids. It’s no secret why my smile is as wide as I can possibly make. And it’s not just the smile, but my tone and attitude that turn warm as well.

And the best part, whenever y ou’re friendly to others, they turn friendly in return. You’re not hearing this from me. Some research done by scientists actually backs this claim. So do remember to give it a try.

Three years ago at the age of 23, I took a long hard look at my life and decided that I was nothing. Tired of my life, I set about making dramatic changes and now I have become a popular writer. My success reflects(显示)that nothing is too difficult if you try bravely.

12. From Paragraph 1 we learn that the author .

A. found it difficult to show a sincere smile to people

B. felt excited but nervous when meeting people

C. became an introvert because of his surroundings

D. didn’t want to smile at others

13. What do we know from Mother Teresa’s words in Paragraph 2?

A. We ca n’t live without the help of our friends.

B. A smile is important to make others feel comfortable.

C. Many people don’t know the importance of a smile.

D. People who always smile are sure to have many friends.

14. Which of the following sayings can we infer from the passage?

A. A friend in need is a friend indeed.

B. Every road leads to Rome.

C A good beginning is half success. D. Try and try, never say die.

15. The author writes this passage mainly to .

A. tell us how to make friends

B. tell us how he achieves success

C. encourage us to perfect our smile

D. describe what a sincere smile is 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)

A Hug That Leads To A Miracle

We’ve all heard about the magical power of love in fairytales and stories like Harry Potter where Lily Potter’s love for her son Harry was so strong that it was able to save his life and defeat the most powerful dark wizard there ever was. 16

In reality, human touch as affection was actually used in medicine in the U.S. and saved the life of a premature (早产)baby in 1995, when the twins named Brielle and Kyrie were born in at Mass Memorial. They were 12 weeks premature and weighed just 2 pounds. The doctor told the parents the twins had to be separately put in the incubators(保温箱), and that the next 42 to 78 hours either of them could turn very quickly when it came to health condition. 17 Her oxygen levels dropped. Her heartbeat was racing and she began to turn blue. Her parents were completely lost and ready to give up hope.

Then the nurse Gayle Kasparaian asked the parents if she could try something new, something that would change the current medicine in the U.S. 18 The moment she placed the twins together, Kyrie put her tiny little arm over he r sister in what the press would appear to be the “Rescuing Hug”. Soon, Brielle began to calm down and her breathing almost became stable. At that time, this newly-created skin-to-skin contact, known as “Kangaroo Care” was referred to as effective in treat ing premature syndrome outside America. At first the doctors didn’t dare to try the method for the reason that these kids were thought to be so weak that they wouldn’t be able to make it. 19_ However, Kyrie and Brielle’s experience was considered to be “historical” and changed this policy.

20 They went to the same high school and college. Now they are also working for the same company and are even closer than ever speaking at the same time and sharing the same thoughts.

A. Finally, the twins are living in harmony.

B. But apparently, the power of love isn’t just a fairytale.

C. In their growth process, they have been sharing a lot in common.

D. Three days later, the younger sister, Brielle was struggling to breathe.

E. Therefore, the twins were previously(先前地)kept apart for fear of infection.

F. She decided to put the stronger twin, Kyrie in the same incubator with Brielle.

G. She never forgot why she started and accomplished the mission of saving the twin.
