Narcissus is a kind of beautiful and graceful flower. It’s said that its name came from a handsome youth. A fairy story tells about that.

There lived a handsome young man named Narcissus. His lovely face and graceful form were the admiration of all who looked upon him. And he knew it. He was so vain that he thought no one but he himself was worthy to see his youthful beauty. When he was delightfully wandering through the woods one day, a wood fairy maiden(仙女) called Echo caught sight of him. She was excited at once. Joyfully moving down down towards Narcissus, she stretched out her loving arms. To her disappointment, however, the young man roughly brushed her aside and went by without so much as a glance at her. Now Narcissus stopped to drink from a little stream. Kneeling down on the bank, he saw a lovely face in the clear water. H is heart gave a beat. He smiled and was smiled back to. Thinking that it must be a girl in love with him, he bent down to kiss her. And her lips also drew near his. But as soon a he touched the clear surface, the lovely face disappeared. Before long he died, never realizing that his loving girl was just his own image in the stream . The gods took pity on the beautiful dead body and turned it into a flower bearing his name, Narcissus.

In the computer age, a broadband Internet connection is very popular now. Whether cable or mobile broadband, today’s connections are many times faster than those i n the early days. V ideos play smoothly, complex websites load quickly, and files download much faster than ten years ago. And the files are much bigger, too.

But t here’s still a catch: Y ou have to live near enough to a major city to get broadband Internet. If you don’t, it’s slow dial-up access for you. And for those living really far out, there may be no Internet access at all.

Technology experts often talk about the “last mile” problem, which refers to the difficulty of bringing Internet access to remot e locations. In cities and suburbs, it’s relatively easy to provide access for everyone. It is much more difficult to deliver access to those living far from cities, especially in developing countries. Internet service providers, for their part, have been reluctant to provide access to sparsely (稀疏地) populated areas. The handful of Internet users they would reach wouldn’t cover the expense.

But every year, technological advancements allow of more and more Internet users. Most broadband connections today run over existing cable TV and telephone lines although these technologies aren’t available everywhere.

Some companies have delivered the Internet over standard power lines. Advancements in cheaper, more efficient fiber optics cables (光纤电缆) promise to bring extremely fast Internet connections to more users.

Still, the “last mile”problem remains hard to deal with. There will always be somewhere that doesn’t have an affordable broadband connection. But someday that might not matter. If the rapid progress in cell phone technology is any indication (迹象), it may not be too long before an Internet connection simply follows you wherever you go.

60.The underlined part “a catch” in Paragraph 2 probably means “_____”.A.a big task B.a wonderful plan

62.What may finally deal with the “last mile” problem?

A.The rapid progress in cell phone technology.

B.More and more Internet users.

C.More and more Internet connections.

D.The broadband connection’s getting faster.

63.Which of the following is true according to the passage?

A.Internet connections have been popular everywhere.

B.Internet service providers are willing to care about rural customers.

C.Computer can’t become popular in developing countries.

D.The problem of Internet access hasn’t been completely dealt with.

When I paid for my bicycle repair, the repairman told me, “No charge, Professor Pan! We’re friends.”

“I’d rather pay,” I replied. “If it’s free, I can’t afford it!”

Chinese often refuse payment for professional services, insisting, “We’re friends now!” But then they show up later to ask me to tutor them in English, or get them into an American university, and I wish I’d have just paid the 30 yuan I owed them in the first place!

According to the Americans, “There’s no free lunch,” meaning that there’s a price for everything, and I’m always looking around to figure out what this means.

Many of our neighbors have given us fruit or flowers or costly teas, never asking anything in return. For years, a bicycle repairman has repeatedly refused to let me pay him. “Wait until you have something major to fix!” he insists.

Chinese generosity (慷慨) is a real education for Americans like me, who would rather avoid social entanglements (纠纷) and just hand over the money. But cash can’t compensate (补偿) for the greatest gift –friendship.

When an American saw some of my friends sitting on bamboo stools under the trees, sipping tea, he said, “They must have nothing better to do.”“Actually,”I said, “they are professors, with plenty to do. But probably you’re right in saying that, at this moment, they have nothing better to do. And neither do I!”

And I joined the group. We chatted about tea and Chinese cooking and how much my boys have grown since we arrived. One man said, “They were pocket-sized when you came here. Now they’re taller than you. How time flies!”

How life flies. And Chinese are smart enough to share what they know they cannot keep. They freely give of their time, never too busy to help a friend. And they are teaching me, slowly, to both give and receive. So the next time someone says, “No charge. We’re friends!” I will thank them heartily. But if they show up later asking me to tutor them in English, I’ll make sure the y tutor my son in Chinese as well, because there’s still no free lunch.

68.Why did the author insist paying the repairman while he was offered free repairs?

A.Because he was an upright man.

B.Because he didn’t know the repairman.

C.Because he thought it natural to pay for other’s service.

D.Because he didn’t want to help others in return.

69.Generally, the author thinks that .

A.Chinese are generous and always ready to help their friends.

B.Chinese are good at exchange of equal values.

C.Chinese are free enough to drink and chat with their friends

D.Chinese are helpful but don’t treasure time

70.The best title for the passage should be “”.

A.Still No Free Lunch B.A Good Lesson from Chinese

C.True Help or Not D.Learn to Both Give and Receive 71.Which of the following is TRUE?

A.All the Chinese help foreigners on purpose.

B.Chinese like to ask for help.

C.The author thinks little of the Chinese way of life.

D.The author thinks that Chinese are wise enough to enjoy the limited life.

I’m so sorry to hear about your problem, but I’m glad you’re feeling better and are recovering. I’m amazed that in China someone’s liver matched yours. This is really a touching story –a stranger who donated part of his liver to a girl he doesn’t even know. You’re right. We shouldn’t be embarrassed about our weight. I think you look as great as you are, and you’re a wonderful person. I know that the pressure to stay slim is a problem, especially for an actress. However, your mother knows best: nothing is more important than health. It’s the same in China-many people, some of whom are not overweight at all, are always going on diets or taking weight-loss pills, which are often dangerous. I hope they can learn from your story. Questions: (1) Why couldn’t the speaker read the e-mails until today? (2) Who donated part of his liver to Amy? (3) What is Amy? (4) How do many people stay slim? (5) Why is the speaker glad? 17 Bill Gates was born in Seattle in 1955. Young Gates’ grades weren’t always great. Not until in the eighth grade did he find his passion. 英语口语考试试题及参考答案

1.How can we keep friendship alive. Friendship is absolutely crucial for us. We have to do hard work to build up and sustain friendship. Here are some important ways to keep friendship alive .First of all,let your friends know that you care about them. If you can't be there at the given moment, say something like, "I wish I could be with you. May I call you tomorrow? "Be sure your friend knows she's cared about.Second, try to be with your friends when they are in trouble. Remember troubled people are most in need of their friends to stay around. The last but not the least, keeping friendship alive is to say to your friends "I miss you and I love you ". Remember? 2.Is it right for college students to have tattoos? Nowadays many college students like to highlight their personalities, to be their own. They have taken special ways to show their personalities. For example, some college students who are tattooed think tattooing is cool and shows great personality. But teachers and parents do not think tattooing is right for students. They believe to be a student you should dress like a student--no tattoos, of cause. Some people even believe that those who are tattooed are not good students. As far as I am concerned, although many people can not accept students’ tattooing, nothing is wrong with tattooing. College students are grown-ups. They can tell right from wrong. If they want to be tattooed, just remember to tell them to select clean places, preferably with parental consents. 3.What do cultural difference mean ? Can you give some examples? Cultural differences mean differences among people in ways of thinking, life, aesthetic concepts, social practices, diet and etc. Let’s talk about, for example, eating habits in different areas. In China, people prefer vegetables and fruits, for the Chinese believe that such things are rich in vc, which are good to health. However, western people are more likely to eat meat. Known as having a good tradition of hospitality , Chinese people always greet their guests with warm hand. Chinese meal table normally is filled with delicious food, yet the host is used to saying " I am sorry. I don’t think the food is good enough today" and other courtesies. Host or hostess sometimes use their chopsticks to take food to the guest’s bowl, which is considered as a way to show hospitality in China. However, in western countries, people emphasize respect to individuality. At dinner, people eat whatever they like or we say they eat at their own will. 4.Do you consider your 18th birthday is one of the most important days in your life? Give reasons. Yes, 18th birthday is considered the most important. Each birthday means a new year. I am most concerned about my 18th birthday as it is a sign of adulthood, indicating that I am no longer a child, but one who can try to do things independently and should be reliable for his or her own actions as an adult. Since my eighteenth birthday, I am entitled to go shopping alone, to travel alone and to live independently. I still remembered my 18th birthday. After my birthday celebration, I suddenly felt grown up, both physically and mentally. Birthday to me is an important turning point, enabling me to learn and think independently. So far as I am concerned about each birthday, I usually feel better.

大学英语口语考试试题-10个口语话题(期末)

Topics for Oral test 1. Which great leader do you admire most? What qualities did/does he/she have? bill gates 2. Which do you cherish more, your friendship with a good friend or your romantic relationship? obviously, friend is easy to make, but lover is kind of hard to seek for. Since relationship between friends might be not that close compared to romantic relationship, I will probably take it serious and cherish this sweet relationship. Also, I believe that my friends will support me and our relationship won’t be tense and freezing because of this. As the Chinese saying goes, once you got a boyfriend or a girlfriend, you may leave your friends out of your mind. I partly agree this, and when I fall in love, especially at the very beginning, I think I will cherish it more than friendship. 3. What factors would you consider first if you were to find a job (even a part-time job)? I will first consider whether this company and the offered position is high potential. I think high potential is a quality that is vital for the company’s future development and its personnel’s self improvement. Every one need a room to promote and realize one’s self-value. Another factor I concern is—its location. I’d like to work and live in big cities because big cities offer so many opportunities and a higher salary while small cities can’t. 4. Whom do you usually turn to when in trouble, vour parents or your friends? They know me better than anyone else and their vision is wide, their thoughts are mature.
