A

In the tenth grade,I began volunteering at a veterinary hospital that was run by a family friend in order to get experience for what I thought would be my future job.As it turns out,the experience I gained at the hospital taught me the opposite:that my future was not in veterinary medicine. However, there is one particular Saturday morning that taught me something maybe more important.

The hospital was in the middle of one of the poorer sections of the city and we frequently had people come in who just could not pay for the most basic treatments. On this Saturday a man and his young son,who was probably about 7 years old, walked in with a small cat in a cardboard box.I remember the cat had an eye infection but the man could not afford to pay for the cost of the medicine in addition to the exam. When he asked where the nearest animal shelter was,his son cried and started to argue with his father.Out of the blue an older woman who was sitting in the waiting room stood up,walked up to the counter, and told the man that she would pay for anything that he could not afford. The man thanked her and the son got to keep a healthy cat.

I had always thought it was the right thing to help out a needy person, but only saw people perform acts of kindness on TV or in movies. The woman in the vet’s office taught me that these things do happen in real life, and should happen more often. When I am hesitant (犹豫的) to be the first person to help someone who is in need,I remember this woman, and have the courage to step up to the plate.Sometimes other people follow.

Southwest Florida International Airport has been using dogs to drive birds away from the airport since 1999.The airport is now served by its third generation of border collies ( 边境牧羊犬),which are part of a birddog training program.

About 20 airports around the US now use border collies to scare(使…害怕)birds, especially large birds, which once had many collisions (冲撞) with airplanes at those airports.According to a 2000 report on the use of border collies at six airports, the number of large birds was reduced by 99% after the use of the border collies.

Air crashes resulting from collisions with wildlife cause more than $600 million a year in damage and have cost several hundred lives.According to the US Bird Strike Committee,90% of the birds are protected species, but many of the measures that people used in the past to drive the birds away often killed the birds.

The border collies are seen as a positive, useful solution for preventing wildlife from getting in the way of aircraft. The border collies that have been trained to drive birds away will keep harassing (攻击) the birds until they leave.A border collie is dogged and he will harass and harass until the birds fly away.He doesn’t kill them.He just runs after them, driving them in the direction they should fly.Though birds get used to the sounds or lights used to scare them, they don’t get used to a border collie. He is always viewed as an enemy for them.

Early reports suggest that a bird strike caused a plane to crash in the Hudson River near Manhattan today.Perhaps today’s “crash on the Hudson” will encourage more airports to use trained bird dogs to protect their passengers, employees, planes and the surrounding wildlife.Additionally, they would be helping to give homeless dogs jobs they really love to do.

46.The first paragraph is written to lead into________.

It was once unheard-of to be a businessman in China. Nowadays, though, it’s quite common to become your own boss. L et’s say you have an idea. Maybe you want to open an English school or sell Japanese comics. First, you need a business plan. It sets out what you’ll sell and how much everything will cost. Most businesses that fail didn’t have this. If you need to borrow money at the start, banks will ask for a detailed plan.

The best starting place for a business plan is the 4Ps: product, place, price and promotion. All these must be strong to be successful.

□Product

Your product must have something unique. What makes it special compared to other similar products? If you want to start a noodle shop that has nothing new, don’t expect people to show much interest. You can research your product. For food, let people try it for free. For toys, let a few children play with them to see if they like them.

□Place

There’s no point having a product that people want to buy if your shop is in an empty mall. Think about which type of person is going to buy what you sell. Where do they usually go shopping? When looking at possible places, spend the day there. See how many people pass by. Also, are there other shops nearby selling similar products? If so, how can you be better than them?

□Price

Work out how much it costs to make or provide your product. As a general rule, your price will be double the cost. After all, you’re also paying for rent, staff and you need to eat too!

□Promotion

How can you attract people to your shop? Advertising in newspapers and on TV is expensive. Perhaps you can get free advertising by getting a newspaper to write about your business.

Jerry was a unique manager because he had several waiters who had followed him around from restaurant to restaurant. The reason the waiters followed Jerry was because of his attitude. He was a natural motivator. If an employee was having a bad day, Jerry was there telling the employee how to look on the positive side of the situation.

Seeing this style really made me curious, so one day I went up to Jerry and asked him, “I don’t get it! You can’t be a positive person all of the time. How do you do it?”Jerry replied, “Each morning I wake up and say to myself,‘Jerry, you have two choices today. You can choose to be in a good mood or you can choose to be in a bad mood.’ I choose to be in a good mood. Each time something bad happens, I can choose to be a victim or I can choose to learn from it. I choose to learn from it. Every time someone comes to me complaining, I can choose to accept their complaining or I can point out the positive side of life. I choose the positive side of life. The bottom line: It’s your choice how you live life.” I reflected on what Jerry said. Later, I left the restaurant industry to start my own business. We lost touch, but I often thought about him when I made a choice about life.

Several years later, I heard that Jerry did something you are never supposed to do in a restaurant business: he left the back door open one morning and was held up at gun point by three armed robbers. While trying to open the safe, he forgot the password, nervous. The robbers panicked and shot him.Luckily, Jerry was found relatively quickly and rushed to the local hospital. After 18 hours of surgery and weeks of intensive care, Jerry was released from the hospital with fragments(碎片)of the bullets still in his body.

I saw Jerry about six months after the accident. When I asked him how he was, he replied, “The first thing that went through my mind was that I should have locked the back door,” Jerry replied. “Then, as I lay on the floor, I remembered that I had two choices: I could choose to live, or I could choos e to die. I chose to live.” “Weren’t you scared? Did you lose consciousness?”(意识)I asked. Jerry continued, “The doctors and nurses were great. They kept telling me I was going to be fine. But when they wheeled me into the emergency room and I saw the expressions

on the faces of the doctors and nurses, I got really scared. I knew I needed to take action.”

“What did you do?” I asked. “Well, there was a big, strong nurse shouting questions at me,” said Jerry.“She asked if I was allergic (过敏的)to anything. “Yes,” I replied. The doctors and nurses stopped working as they waited for my reply. I took a deep breath and yelled, “Bullets!”Over their laughter, I told them. “I am choosing to live. Operate on me as if I am alive, not dead.”

Jerry lived thanks to the skill of his doctors, but also because of his amazing attitude. I learned from him that every day we have the choice to live fully.

D. He might not be saved by doctors and nurses.

59. From the passage we can learn that Jerry was _________.

A. no longer positive to his life after the operation

His art and talent were recognized by almost no one. He suffered from a mental illness that led him to cut off part of his left ear in 1888 and to shoot himself two years later. But after his death, he achieved world fame. Today, Dutch artist Vincent van Gogh is recognized as one of the leading artists of all time. Now, 150 years after his birth on March 30, 1853, Zundert, the town of his birth, has made 2003 “The van Gogh Year” in his honor. And the van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, home to the biggest collection of his masterpieces, is marking the anniversary with exhibitions throughout the year. The museum draws around 1.3 million visitors every year. Some people enjoy the art and then learn about his life. Others are first interested in his life, which then helps them understand his art. Van Gogh was the son of a pastor(牧师). He left school when he was just 15. By the age of 27, he had already tried many jobs including an art gallery salesman and a French teacher. Finally in 1880, he decided to begin his studies in art. Van Gogh is famed for his ability to put his own emotions into his paintings and show his feelings about a scene. His style is marked by short, broad brush strokes(笔画).“Instead of trying to reproduce exactly what I have before my eyes, I use color more freely, in order to express myself more forcibly,” he w rote in a letter to his brother in 1888. Van Gogh sold only one painting during his short life. He relied heavily on the support from his brother, an art dealer who lived in Paris. But now his works are sold for millions of dollars. His portrait of Dr. Gacher sold for $89.5 million in 1990. It is the highest price ever paid for a painting. “I think his paintings are powerful and the brilliant colors in them are attractive to people,” said a Van Gogh’s fan. 1. All through his life, Van Gogh . A. depended on his brother B. worked hard on art studies C. was not recognized by people D. expressed himself in paintings 2.Van Gogh killed himself because of .
