今天又要学两个在总统大选年里新闻界时常会用到的习惯用语，而且这两个习惯用语
还是从美国人最心爱的消遣活动：棒球赛中借用来的。
这两个习惯用语都和用牛皮制成的结结实实的棒球有关。第一个是：beanball。Beanball是由bean和ball合成的复合词，大家也许知道bean这个词的意思是豆子，但
是它在俚语中却指人的脑袋，不是豆子，而beanball在棒球运动中是指投手故意往击球
员脑袋上扔的棒球。
把硬梆梆的像飞弹一般的棒球往人脑袋上丢，不用说，这是充满敌意的动作。这样做
的投手很可能会被罚下场。
那么投手为什么要干这种缺德事儿呢?不外乎两种动机。第一，投手是想吓唬击球员，使他紧张不安，不敢靠近投手板，而躲躲闪闪的击球员很可能因此挥棒不力或者一棒打偏。这样他可不就处于劣势了吗?
投手有时也可能是出于报复心理而要拿球去砸对方的击球员。棒球砸人脑袋可以造成
严重伤害。在棒球史上确实发生过几次悲剧。棒球运动员由于头部遭到球击而受重伤并因
此断送棒球生涯甚至与世长辞。
如今棒球赛有一条规则规定击球员必须戴上硬塑料制成的头盔，主要原因就是防备beanball。
头盔固然能防止beanball造成严重的头部伤害，但是beanball引起的双方球员大打
出手的场面却防不胜防。要是击球员被投手一球打在头上，他往往甩下球棒就跳出本垒扑
向投手，一眨眼球场边的板凳都空了，因为所有的队员都冲进场内为本队球员助威，接下
来是一场混战，所以beanball杀伤力还是很大。
近一百年来，beanball被人们借用来指猝不及防的恶意中伤。政界侯选人必然会成为beanball的攻击目标。现在有一位侯选人要来告诉我们自己的经历。

今天要学的第二个习惯用语是：throw a curve。Curve在这里指棒球的曲线球，所以这个习惯用语也可以那样说，意思不变：throw a curve ball。棒球赛中，一名出色的投手不是单靠投掷飞快的好球才难倒击球员，使他跑垒不成的;他们的另一个拿手好戏是投曲线球，就是投a curve ball，其实曲线球也可以单用curve这一个词来表示，所以可以这样说“投曲线球。”
投手投出的有一种球会急速下斜，而正当击球员挥棒击球时，这球又会突然转向左方或者右方，使得击球员扑个空。这就是曲线球。当然这种令人捉摸不定的球一定让击球员头疼。人们逐渐把throw a curve借用到日常生活中，指出其不意地刁难人。例如一个学生刚考完试。他被出乎意料的考题难住了，于是这样埋怨教授：

例句-3：He said he'd just ask me about my proposal to cut taxes. But instead he threw me a real curve ball - he asked a lot of questions about where I got so much money for my campaign.
那主持人原本说自己只是想问侯选人的减税提议，但是他问的许多问题却都是关于侯选人从哪里得到了这么多的竞选经费。
可见这个主持人是想出其不备地刁难侯选人。所以throw somebody a curve ball含义是出其不备地刁难某人。其实throw a curve还可以解释为“欺骗。” 我们听一个人说自己买照相机上当的事儿：

我们要学的第一个习惯用语是：not have a prayer. Prayer是祷告，也就是人对所敬拜的上帝作出的呼求。要是某人not have a prayer，那就是说甚至求告上帝也帮不了他从面临的困境中解脱出来，可见形势相当糟糕，希望渺茫。

今天要学的第二个习惯用语也和宗教有关，只是比刚才not have a prayer这个习惯用语的构成更复杂一些。它是：Hail Mary pass。Hail是欢呼赞美的意思，而Mary是耶稣的母亲圣母马利亚的名字。
罗马天主教徒向圣母祈祷的传统祷告词都是以Hail Mary开端的，意思是万福，马利亚。这个习惯用语后面还有一个词：pass。这是什么意思呢?你一定想不到pass在这里是指美国人足球赛中的传球。
习惯用语Hail Mary pass大约四十来年前来自职业足球联合会甲级队，用来说比赛到了最后关头，某一方在落后几分的情况下不顾一切而作的传球，希望搏得反败为胜的机会。

Now in Grade 1, Brendan was faced with five hours of wondering what I was doing with my day. Brendan always came home for lunch, the only one of his class not to eat at his desk. But once home, fed and hugged, a far-away look of longing would crease his gentle brow--he wanted to go back to school to play! So I walked him back, waited with him until he spotted someone he knew, then left. He told me once that he watched me until he couldn't see me anymore, so I always walked fast and never looked back. One day when I took Brendan back after lunch, he spied a friend, kissed me goodbye, and scampered right off. I went, feeling pleased for him, celebrating his new independence, his entry into the first-grade social loop. And I felt pleased for myself, a sense of well-being and accomplishment that I, too, had entered the mystic circle of parents whose children separated easily. Then--I don't know why--I glanced back. And there he was. The playground buzzed all around him, kids everywhere, and he stood, his chin tucked close, his body held small, his face intent but not sad, blowing me kisses.
