论中国节日的英文翻译规律
语言是丰富多彩的,各个国家各个民族对同一文化的表达往往存在巨大差异,特别是节日文化。节日是人们丰富多彩生活的集中展现,是各地区、民族、国家政治、经济、文化、宗教等的总结和延伸。中国的主要节日有春节、清明节、端午节、中秋节、七夕、重阳节等,具有鲜明的民族特色和农业特色。2009年9月30日,联合国教科文组织正式批准中国申报的端午节列入《人类非物质文化遗产代表作名录》,北大教授王岳川曾做客央视畅谈中国节日文化。这些都对我国的文化保护作出了巨大贡献。
英语和汉语是两种不同的语言。每种语言都有各自独立和分明的系统,在形态和句法方面二者存在很大差异。然而,两种语言之间存在一些相似性,比如在主谓词序和动宾词序上是一致的。由于英汉两种语言既有共同点又有不同点,因此在翻译实践中,我们不能千篇一律地使用一种方法进行翻译或随意翻译。中国节日翻译成英语并不是杂乱无章的,而是遵循一定规律,笔者通过对中国节日英译的研究,总结出以下几种主要方法:
1.字面翻译
字面翻译指的是既保持原文内容又保持原文形式的翻译方法或翻译文字。现在文化翻译主要是运用这种方法。直译不仅能保持原作的特点,而且能使读者逐步接受原作的文学风格。中国的代表节日有:春节the Spring Festival、建军节the Army Day和中国青年节Chinese Youth Day等。从这些节日中读者可以明显看出,翻译时直接以英文春天spring代替“春”,名词替名词;“建军”译为army,名词替动词;中国青年Chinese youth后接day,既摆脱了僵硬的模式,又坚持翻译准则。
2.习俗翻译
习俗翻译指的是根据庆祝节日的活动方式,以其活动内容表达其英文翻译。每个节日都有其独特的庆祝方式和民族特色。以端午节和中秋节为例,端午节来源于伟大爱国诗人屈原,他投江之后国人为防止他尸体被鱼虾吃掉,因此划龙舟撒糯米。长久流传下来之后则演变成赛龙舟,吃粽子,所以将端午节译成the Dragon-Boat Festival。中秋节来源于嫦娥和后羿的动人爱情故事,国人在这一天都纷纷回家,赏月吃月饼,以圆月盼团圆,将中秋节译成the Moon Festival。对于不了解中国节日的其他国家人来说,可以从英文字面看中国节日的风俗,加深了解。
3.农历翻译
中国自古以来以农为本,男耕女织,节气对农民的生活生产有着重大影响,百姓乞求风调雨顺,农作物丰收,因此中国传统的庆祝节日大部分都是依据农历而产生的。以重阳节the Double Ninth Festival和七夕节the Double Seventh Festival为例,传说重阳节为农历九月初九,传说插茱萸可以驱赶瘟魔,身体健康;七夕为农历七月初七则是为了纪念牛郎织女,两者都体现了我国古代劳动人民对美好生活的向往和祝愿,具有传统的农业色彩。
4.拼音翻译
汉语拼音是由新中国成立之后,我国国家语言文字工作委员会研究制定的,方便人们对汉语的学习。随着中国改革开放以来,中外进一步交流,拼音作用愈来愈重要。如中国人习惯于将名字直接用拼音表示成英文。然而有些汉字的拼音在英国人看来格外绕口难说,因此在节日翻译中,更习惯用拼音+音译,以清明节为例,清明拼音为Qing Ming,英文将Qing浊化,从而译成the Ching Ming Festival,更加口语化。
有些节日也可以有多种翻译方式:如清明节可以译成the Qing Ming Festival或者Tomb-sweeping Day。中秋节可以译成the Mid Autumn Festival 或者the Moon Festival,翻译方法不拘一格,更加灵活,体现了不同的文化内涵。
综上所述,我们可以看到中国传统节日的英文翻译主要根据中国农业和习俗,文化之间的翻译并不拘泥于表面形式,而是体现了一个国家的文化背景。在翻译过程中,取其精华,去其糟粕,用灵活的翻译方法增强传统节日的清晰度和理解度,促进文化多元性,才能使我国文化在国际上立于不败之地。
