The development of language
1.1 Why language appears?
Maybe there are a lot of reasons, history, technology or revolution. Of course history develops all the time, so language appears is sooner or later. And technology makes human beings?life take out, so languages may be seen as a result of the economic, scientific development in a specific area. Many people think that revolution is a key theme of the era. Maybe during the conflicts of different race languages emerge, as each gens had names for persons that were its special property and allowed no invasion.
However I think languages appear simply, which is all because of the desire of expression and communication.
Now we will give the introduction from three respects: the origins, the improvement and the mix of languages.
1.2 The origins of languages
At first, to understand the nature around, early people notice that when an object flew by making a caw-caw sound, a body runs by with a bow-wow sound. The early human tried to imitate the sound and used it to refer to the thing associated with the sound. And when another flying creature made a coo-coo sound, that natural sound was adopted to refer to that kind of object. Thus, languages begin. While it is true that a number of words in any language are echoing natural sounds, it is hard to see how most of the soundless as well as abstract things in our world could have been referred to in a language that simply echoed natural sounds. We might also be rather skeptical about a view that seems to assume that a language is only a set of words used as …names? for things.
Mac Neilage once said “Chewing, licking and sucking are extremely widespread mammalian activities, which, in terms of casual observation, have obvious similarities with speech.” That is a clue to study language's early formation. And it is also a powerful proof of what is the final destination to invent language, which is to learn about the world, and to reform the world.
Also, the original sounds of language may have come from natural cries of emotion such as pain, anger and joy. By this route, “Ouch!”came to have its painful connotations. But “Ouch!” and other interjections such as “Ah!”, “Ooh!”, “Wow!” or “Yuck!”, are usually produced with sudden intakes of breath, which is the opposite of ordinary talk. We normally produce spoken language on exhaled breath.
1.3 The improvement of languages
It?s sure that there are also some physical and mental reasons, but the languages development indeed. With the evolution of human and the improvement of living standard the languages became more and more advanced. When we talk about distinctions between human language and animal communication, we are considering both in terms of their potential as a means of intentional communication. Animal?s languages cannot effectively be used to relate events that are far removed in time and place. Displacement allows language users to talk about things and events not present in the immediate environment. Indeed, displacement allows us to talk about things and places as angels, fairies, Santa Claus, Superman, heaven, hell and so on whose existence we cannot even be sure of. Animal communication is generally considered to lack this property. That is to say that not only the teeth, lips, larynx and pharynx but also the brain, the gene, the desire and the intelligence play an important part in distinguishing human beings and animals.
While we may inherit physical features such as brown eyes and dark hair from our parents, we do not inherit their language. We acquire a language in a culture with other speakers and not from parental genes. So in a complicated environment or culture especially in a highly-developed society where it need to be use more frequently language improved rapidly than any moment in the old days.
1.4 The mix of languages
The mix of languages cannot be seen as to form in a decisive action in a few years. It is long process which continued hundreds of years. So, there is not any outbreak.
But, nowadays, world contact is continually strengthening. This is indeed an incomparable opportunity of language fusion.
Stalin has said “Language fusion usually is that one of a kind of language becomes a winner to preserve its own language, and continues developing according to its own internal regularity, while another language criterion gradually loses its own qualitative and die out." However, Stalin?s opinion is not correct exactly. He thought the result of languages?mix was either victory or defeat, one continued, the other disappeared. It is one-sided to affirm one thing or to negate one thing.
I think language fusion is the form of not just victory or defeat but unmistakable and mixed. For example, we now use English word like “hanbaobao”“minixx”“fashaoyou” and so on. And in some English speaking countries Chinese words are very popular as well. But our mother tongue is not replaced. That is a kind of development, too.
The study of the second language
2.1 The first language and the second language
Without question, the first language is the mother tongue. And the second language is a non native language that the native language country learns. It is clear that humans are born
with some kind of talent to acquire language in general surroundings. However, we are not born with the ability to use a specific language flexibly such as English.
The first language is the most easily acquisition in human knowledge skill system. Everybody can master the mother tongue, but learning the second languages can be a great headache to many students. Most people hold the view that the foreign language is one of the most time-consuming and difficult course.
Here we have three reasons to explain the language learning situation.
2.2 The amount of language stimulation
If we regard the study number as stimulation, the numbers and the length of time interval is one of the important indexes in language acquisition. Large quantity and great multiple of stimulation is one of the most important requirements to learn the first language for child.
All of the parents have the resemble but easily ignorance experience that when children shout out “Mum”and “Dad”, the parents have given the baby a lot of stimulation to teach them speak “Mum”and “Dad”. These “stimulations”not only have a great effect on children?s sense of hearing but also other sense organ.
But when we learn the second language the amount of stimulation not only in quantity but also in density is hard to compare with that of learning the first language. Even we can increase the quantity of stimulation by adding the class time. But it is also very limited.
As a result, to improve student?s ability of learning and speaking, more material and form of learning language should be provided.
2.3 The motivation of learning language
How people master their first language?
Is first language acquisition an obstacle to second language learning?
To many learners, the motivation of learning the first language is incomparable. Research findings that “people can understand, but never more than can say, and can read more than can write in the process of learning language”. As the fact that we appreciate novels and essays, but we may never write it. On the other hand, the more we read, the stronger our ability of expression will be.
The motivation to learn the first language begins with the baby?s “yiyiyaya”. Learning is natural and inherent and it is our basic need as existence. What is more, we start the first language with listening and speaking which make us more practical. Well the second language is right different from that. We learn the second language in a later age in primary school or junior high school. And also we learn it beginning with writing the word and reciting the grammar which always make us tired boredom and uninterested. That is to say we fall behind at the star point. We have fallen into a large mistake district that we learning the foreign language just because we have to do it, not we need it, we like it.
2.4 The cognitive and development level
Research has found that children?s intelligence develops mainly from the age of two to eleven when it can reach the 70% of adult. Also, they can adapt to the accurate memory and the dill as much as possible. So this period is the best time for child to learn language. In a manner of speaking, children's language learning and their cognitive development level is consistent.
When children have been into higher grades of the elementary school, cognitive function has started to logical initialization. They not only reality and representation, but also begin to logic reorganize and understanding reality and possible relationship. With the development of challenging simple mechanical memorize irreversible vocabulary and sentence patterns in the process of development of intelligence, has no longer concerned.
To be interested in learning the second language we must take effective measures maybe by encouraging students to listen music watching TV and movies or by warmly praising even the little success in language studying. In the next chapter we will give the specific declare.
The skill of learning the second language English
3.1 Interesting is the best teacher
Many people study English, just study, read and write and without any interest (maybe they are forced to learn), it won?t last long before they begin feeling that it is hard to focus on learning English, and by then it seems that learning English is the most sterile thing in the world. That is, interest is the best teacher. Interest gives us energy and makes us feel happy whenever we learn. So one who wants to learn English should firstly develop his interest and make it blossom. With interest, he will involuntarily read, listen, speak and write English with strong desire. With interest, he will drive himself to find someone to communicate in English, or try whatever he can to improve his English level. Also involuntarily, he will find himself has already mastered this very language. So having interest is important to learn English.
In fact, many of us admit interest is necessary, but rarely will there be anyone develop his interest painstakingly. Children don?t hate English when they just start studying English, but they will as time going by. It is because they haven?t found the right way, and then, learning becomes a tedious thing, of course, they will lose interest in learning, and of course, they won?t get an “A” in English. They become “patients”.
3.2 The reasons why they become “patients”
I already point it out that it is because that “they haven?t found the right way”. Usually, these “patients” have some same problems:
1. They throw too much light upon “the law of grammar”, but they hardly learn “the spirit of English”, so they become a prisoner of grammar.
2. They believe enough exams will work, so they take a large amount of difficult exams and hopes they can grow up in pain and setback.
3. They have no sense about pronunciation, and they give out many and many terrible pronunciation, things happen and sometime later they couldn?t gather courage to speak in English any more, it?s a vicious circle in learning English.
4. They study in a no-passion environment, nobody means to innovate it, and everyone is bored by everything associated with English courses.
5. They don?t know how to remember vocabularies. Without any skill, lifeless vocabularies are agony for them to remember.
6. They suppose English-learning is just for dealing with the final examination, just like math, biology, chemistry and so on.
So they forget English is a method of communication, their learning is not for using.
3.3 Low efficiency equals waste time
From junior high school to university, there are a lot of teenagers who work hard in learning English around. They spend many time, energy and money, but they get no harvest. Or some other things like their 4-hour-long studying just equals other?s 1-hour-long studying.
I couldn?t imagine what they are doing.
Also there are many people who always find themselves fail, finally they give up. I feel sorry about them, and about our basic education. New learners aren?t taught good method and have no interest in learning English.
Do what you don?t like to do. Of course you can?t do it well. Though maybe you do it well finally, it has already cost too much time and energy, which I think is a great waste.
3.4 Skills of learning English
Learning English requires action. You may know all the learning tips, but if you don't start doing things, you will achieve nothing. The fact is if you want to learn to speak English well, you must change your life. Here are some examples of things you will have to do:
1. Read a book in English for an hour every day, analyzing the grammar in sentences and looking up words in an English dictionary;
2. Listen to an audio book or other recording in English, stopping it frequently, trying to understand what is being said, and trying to imitate the speaker's pronunciation;
3. Spend your afternoon practicing the pronunc iation of the English “r” sound;
4. Carefully write an e-mail message in English, using a dictionary or a Web search every 20 seconds to make sure every word is correct, and taking 5 minutes to write one sentence;
5. Think about an English sentence you have r ead, wondering if it could say “a” instead of “the”in the sentence, and trying to find similar sentences on the Web to find out the answer;
6. Walk down the street and build simple English sentences in your head (talking to yourself in English about the things you see around you);
What kind of person would do all these crazy things? There is only one kind, the kind of person who enjoys doing them. If you want to learn to speak English well, you are going to have to become that person. You cannot hate doing these things. Have you ever heard of a person who became successful by doing something he hated?
The problem with learning and teaching English as a foreign language is that all English learners want to speak English w ell; however, most learners don?t want to spend time on learning English on their own. Which is probably why they sign up for English classes and hope their teacher will force knowledge into their heads?
This lack of motivation me ans that learners basically don?t spend their own time on learning En glish, and if they do, they don?t do it regularly. For example, a typical learner might study English phrasal verbs for 12 hours before an English exam. However, he will not read a book in English for 30 m inutes every day. He just doesn?t feel that learning English is pleasant enough, so he will only do it if he has to. The problem is that a huge one-time effort gives you nothing, while small, everyday activities will give you a lot.
