If only I had known that was the last chance I could talk to her ! If so, I would have said to her,“Hi, my dearest sister! Do you know how much I love you and how much I feel proud of you?”

Every time when alone, I am always thinking how much happiness she once brought to the people who loved her, I can still remember her smile which was so bright and so beautiful, her voice which was so pleasing to the ear and her love so deep for people!

She was pretty, nice, pure, lively and …. Oh, she had many merits (优点),which always made many other girls envy (妒忌) her. She had also some bad habits. She liked to turn up radio so loudly that people often felt a bit unbearable about the noise. She carelessly threw her dirty stockings about, which used to make her parents angry. She sometimes let our strange laughter without any reason that often made people frightened. However, if you put her beautiful character on one side of a balance and her bad habits on the other, you would find the bad habits which you think unbearable are so unimportant.

I have no more chance to tell her what I am thinking about her now, though I wish she would know it in heaven. That day she phoned me, saying,“Hi, sister! I rang you just because I wanted to tell you that I love you and …and nothing more. Now I have something else to do. Bye !”And the next day came the news about her death. She left me the thing which I would cherish (珍爱) in my mind for ever.

I know that I will never have any chance to tell my sister that I love her very much. But I think I still have many chances to tell other people that I love them. And I think people may have many chances to tell the same thing to the people they love. Maybe you will have to leave them or maybe they will leave you for a place so far away that you will no longer see them again. So why not at this right moment tell them that you love them? Why don’t people want to let others know that they care so much for each other? Why do they always hesitate to do that?

Do it right now, or you will never have the chance!

For children with cancer, the facts of life include the facts of death. There is always the fear that they might not live to grow up, yet they realize that fighting cancer is the only way of beating it. So they fight. And sometimes, they win. It may take years. It certainly takes support from parents and doctors.

Unfortunately, many parents can’t deal with their child’s illness. And doctors, no matter how caring, have other patients to care for. At times like these, the Children’s Cancer Foundation (formerly the Children’s Cancer Fund) can help. We’re a group of Hong Kong doctors, nurses, psychologists(心理学家), parents of children with cancer and concerned persons. All of us are volunteers. We’re with the children every day, listening to and encouraging them. We also advise parents, educate the public and send doctors overseas to study new cancer treatments. Our funding has brought better equipment to the wards(病房), and paid for special flats where children can

recover in a clean, yet cheerful home setting.

We want to do even more. But to do it, we need your support. It will be money well spent. One like at our past achievements(成就)should prove that. To the children, your contribution will also be a show of support, a sigh that you’re behind them, which is just the sort of news that a six-year-old with cancer needs to hear.

It is true that times are changing for the old people in Britain. But not all the changes are bad ones. Modern medicine, for example, has made old people healthier than ever before. Another advantage is that there are many more old people than there used to be. This means that old people often have a good social life with their own clubs and organization. Old people, too, have more money than their own parents and grandparents had.

The biggest disadvantage of modern life is loneliness. The young leave home when they grow up, and many old people live alone. Fewer old people have brothers and sisters like their parents or grandparents. An old person’s one or two children may have moved to another part of the country. Even when they live nearly, the young people have their own work to do and their own children to look after. They have not much time for the old. Problems of loneliness often start when people stop work.. When people retire(退休), they find it difficult to start a new life without their jobs.

The world has changed so fast since 1900 that it is difficult for old people to understand the problems of the young. And the world is changing even faster these days than fifty years ago. It makes you think, doesn’t it? What will it be like when the today’s young people are old?

69.To the old people, the changes in society are ____.

A. better than expected

B. not as good as they wish

C. both good and bad

D. difficult to understand

70.Although some old people live near their sons or daughters, ____.

A.they still feel lonely

B.they want to move to other places

C.they have no time to look after their grandchildren

D.they like to live with their own brothers and sisters

71.In the 19th century old people didn’t have so many problems because ____.

A. they had their own clubs

B. the young were kind to the old

C. they had big families

D. the society didn’t change so rapidly

72. What is the main idea of this passage?

A.Modern society only belongs to the young

B.Today’s young people are happier than their parents

C.Modern life has brought new problems to the old

D.It is necessary to take better care of the old people

For years scientists have been worried about the effects of air pollution on the earth’s natural conditions. Some believe the air inside many houses may be more dangerous than the air outside. It may be one hundred time worse.

Indoor air pollution can cause a person to feel tired, to suffer eye pain, headache and other problems. Some pollutants(污染物)can cause breathing disorders, diseases of blood and even cancer. Most scientists agree that every modern house has some kind of indoor pollution.

People have paid more attention to the problem now. it is said that when builders began making houses and offices, they did not waste energy. To do this they built buildings that limited the flow of air between inside and outside. They also began using man-made building materials. These materials are now known to let out harmful gases.

As the problem became more serious, scientists began searching for a way to deal with it. They discovered a natural pollution control system for buildings –green plants. Scientists so not really know how plants control air pollution. They believe that a plant’s leaves absorb(吸收) or take in the pollutants. In exchange the plant lets out oxygen through its leaves and small organizations on its roots. Scientists suggest that all buildings should have one large plant or several small plants inside for every nine square meters of space. Studies of different plants show that each absorbs different chemicals. So the most effective way to clean the air is to use different kinds of plants. Having green plants inside your house can make it a prettier and more healthy place.

73.Generally speaking, indoor air pollution may be more harmful than that outside because ____.

A.indoor sir pollution can often make people seriously ill

B.man—made building materials give off dangerous gases

C.there may be more harmful gases outside the buildings

D.the flow of air indoors is limited, which is very harmful

74.Some kind of indoor pollution can be found in ____.

A. almost every modern house

B. every old house

C. all kinds of houses

D. all kinds of offices

75.The reason why we should use different kinds of plants to clean the air is that ____.

A.plants can let out all kinds of pollutants indoors

B.plants may take in more oxygen which people need

C.plants can take in all kinds of harmful indoor chemicals

D.plants can make our houses prettier and more healthy

for them to keep in touch with their parents and

classmates if they have a mobil phone. And

what’s more, it’s a fashion.

However most teacher think that middle school students are not old enough to control themselves. It’s a waste of time for students to play games and send messages to e ach other by mobil phone. And it’s easy to cause the students to vie with each other. If necessary they can make phone calls by using public phones on the campus.

In my opinion, following the fashion is understandable. But as middle school students, we should put all our heart into our studies.

Yours truly,

Li Hua
