Part5

I guess it's not every 14-year-old that wakes up, stumbles out of bed, goes to the kitchen, and makes jam. Let's just say Fraser is special. Fraser Doherty now runs his own company, SuperJam. He was taught to make jam by his grandmother at the age of 14. He later began making jam at home, selling it to neighbours, at farmers' markets, and to local shops.

Fraser became the youngest ever supplier to Waitrose, a major U.K. supermarket chain in 2007. And SuperJam currently supplies over 2,000 supermarkets around the world.

Fraser's company is estimated to be worth over £1 million. I guess he's not done too badly for himself.

I got the chance to ask him a few questions about his life and work.

Question: It's not every 14-year-old that wants to start up their own business. What inspired you to do that at such a young age?

Fraser: I was inspired to start making jam by my grandmother. She was cooking jam in the kitchen one afternoon, and I got really excited about it and started cooking jam as a hobby in my spare time. The neighbours soon started buying my homemade jam, and then I began selling it at farmers' markets and to small shops.

Question: Were you exposed to entrepreneurship as a child? Did you have any family members who influenced you in that way?

Fraser: My parents and family weren't entrepreneurs, but they always let me try out new things and do whatever I wanted to do in my spare time. I was always interested in making a bit of extra pocket money and tried out all kinds of ideas. My favourite story of all is when I hatched out some chickens from eggs that I got from a local farm. I kept the eggs warm on top of the telly, and amazingly they hatched. I sold the chickens to the neighbours and that was my first ever little business.

Question: On those impossible days of starting up, what motivated you to keep going? Fraser: I was motivated by a feeling that I was doing something worthwhile with my life and by

the fact that I was enjoying what I was doing every step of the way.

Question: How do you manage the growth of your company?

Fraser: The business is growing very fast, and we're launching new products in new stores all the time. The most important things are that we have stayed focused on the idea of making 100% pure fruit jams, have focused on keeping the retailers happy, and have improved every aspect of the business as we're moving forwards.

Question: Excluding yours, what company or business do you admire most?

Fraser: I admire entrepreneurs like the late Anita Roddick and other entrepreneurs who have run businesses with not only an aim of making money, but an aim of making the world a better place. Inspired by companies like theirs, I set up a charitable project over a year ago, running tea parties for lonely elderly people. We have now run over 120 tea parties, with live music, dancing, and scones and tea; some parties attracted over 500 guests. It feels great to be able to put something positive like that into the world.

Traditionally, there is no equivalent term for “privacy” in Chinese. This is because the value of collectivism is praised highly in China. On the other hand, Chinese people enjoy living together with their family members because it is a way to show harmonious human relationship. It is not strange for us to find that even people from different families share a big courtyard in China. With such arrangements, privacy would be hardly possible. So, Chinese people feel that nothing should be concealed. China's primary and middle school students' imagination and creative ability are quite poor. In a survey of 21 countries, the counting ability of Chinese children ranked No.1, while imagination ranked at the bottom and creative ability ranked fifth from the bottom. Regarding this, experts suggest strengthening imagination-oriented education for China's primary and middle school students through legislation. The lack of imagination among Chinese children is a matter of concern for the scientific world. The examination system in China has severely restricted students’ imagination and creativity, and the reform of China's education system should start with the liberation of children's curiosity.

These managers were honest in all aspects of their work. They gave credit to their employees for ideas taken forward to senior executives and explained to them new rules, new strategies, and policy or procedural changes with candor. The business urban legends of politicking, networking, and climbing the ladder of succession on the backs of others were foreign to these managers. These managers understood not just being honest, but also the gospel principles of kindness and fairness are important. They were successful because of these qualities, not despite them. Their employment security resulted from a simple devotion to basic commandments of honesty. Some confrontations on the pitch are gladiatorial. In this respect, our sports heroes are our gladiators. A football match, especially between rival teams, isn’t some light-hearted display of athletic prowess. The self is emotionally involved in the outcome because whoever you’re rooting for represents YOU. So professional footballers seem to recreate the intense emotions in some fans that tribal warfare aroused in their forebears. It could even be that these emotions have fuelled the explosion in the popularity of sports over the past 20 years. Being an ardent fan could be simply the desire to belong to a group or a society — a need once answered by religion and politics. This explains why some fans remain loyal through thick and thin, and despite the repeated failure of their teams. Surrounding yourself at a match with people who so clearly espouse your own enthusiasm, and identifying your tribal membership with hats, scarves, Mexican waves3 and songs, makes you feel you belong as little else does. What’s more, you’re part of a group where no questions are asked, explanations are unnecessary and where you can always rely on support. With so many traditional institutions like religion and family beginning to break down, the football crowd is the perfect family.

1. No Pains, No Gains The height which great men reach and keep is not attained by a sudden flight. Most of us feel envious of the famous and successful people. We do not understand why they are so popular and honored while we are mere simple common folks. In our misconception, we think that people are prosperous because they are especially gifted or that they are “just lucky”. All these have taken root in our stubborn minds, and we refuse to believe that most great men have a mind which is the same as, or perhaps even simpler and duller than ours. Yet, their triumphs are great. Why? Because they are apt to fight difficulties with perseverance and without fatigue, undergo sufferings without minding the wounds; they realize that hardships form the road which they must pass through before reaching their destination. Their endurance is more powerful than that of ours for the simple reason that they submit without complaint to each storm in life. 2. Don’t Give Up If we would ever accomplish anything in life, let us not forget that we must persevere. If we would learn our lessons in school, we must be diligent and not give up whenever we come across anything difficult. We will find many of our lessons very hard, but let us consider that the harder they are the better they will be for us if we will persevere and learn them thoroughly. But there are some among us who are ready to give up when they come to a hard example in mathematics, and say, “I can’t do this.” They never will if they feel so. “I can’t” never does anything worthwhile; but “I’ll try” accomplishes wonders. Let us remember that we will meet with difficulties all through life. They are in the pathway of everyone. If we will only try and keep trying, we will be sure to conquer and overcome every difficulty we meet. If we have a hard lesson today, let us strive to learn it well and
